Captions for videos

Since I am almost deaf, in order to play any video in Windfows 7 (e.g., news how-to, etc.),  I need to have them captioned. If this is possible, how do I go about getting caqptions turned ON?

Hello jenniwren, welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you're looking for assistance with turning on captions/subtitles for videos. I will try to assist you with this.
Just so that you're aware, enabling captions or subtitles is specific to the program being used. There's no master command for the entire computer and there may be some web players that don't offer the feature.
Show captions or subtitles in Windows Media Player - Windows media player.
Turn captions on and off - This ones for you YouTube.
How do I enable subtitles, captions and alternate audio on my device? - This is for Netflix.
I've provided the above links to show what I mean by application based, also these are popular tools for movies ect.
I hope this is able to help you.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

  • Closed captioning for video no longer works for iPhone 4 since iOS 5.0 update. Is there a fix for this?

Closed captioning while video-playing is one of the coolest features of iOS devices. But for my iPhone (and an iPad user elsewhere from the Net), ever since I updated to iOS 5, the closed captioning icon no longer appear amongst the list of icons when you play a video WITH a closed caption capability.
I have played videos with closed captions before prior to iOS updates and been having no problems till I tried with iOS 5.
I tried turning the setting on/off in the Videos Settings, tried deleting and re-adding the video to the phone and also rebooted the phone.
Hoped someone could find a fix for this. The community can try it on iOS 5 and see if it is also an issue for them since I haven't seen but rarely people having this issue i'm having.

My son has a similar problem since updating to the latest software on his iphone 4. He can make calls but the other person can't hear him. Facetime and Skype work fine - so it must be the lower microphone that is the problem. He's had it checked at the Apple store in Chiang Mai but they won't fix it - he has to get it back to the UK for service. It's 2 months over the warranty period but having checked around it seems this problem is widespread and Apple need to sort it fast!
I've updated mine and it's fine - but I'm gonna take out applecare before the warranty runs out as I'm not risking having a £495 phone that I can't use as a phone.
I was thinking of buying one for my wife this Xmas but no way whilst they are having so many problems.
COME ON APPLE - GET THIS FIXED WITH A NEW RELEASE ASAP!

  • Can you generate a static caption for video in InDesign?

I set up my caption in the metadata description area in Bridge. I am trying to generate the static caption in InDesign and it goes through the motion but gives me a blank box. It works correctly for my images, but not for my video. Can this be done or does it just not work for videos?

Seems like this is not possible for videos. I tried static and dynamic captions with MOV and FLV. No chance.

The application you are using for watch the video will have to write that functionality into their application and the videos itself needs to support closed captioning.

  • How to create pages of text between video clips and as captions for stills

Can either of these things be done in an Imovie?
    Thank you.

Pages of text? No, iMovie 6 cannot do that, and you would probably find that a page of text would be largely unreadable.
What I tend to do when wanting to introduce a paragraph or two of explanatory text or introduction to a movie, is to use rolling credits. The software to that with is, remarkably enough, called Rolling Credits, and is available from:
    http://www.rqs.ca/
Captions for stills? Depends on exactly what you want to achieve. If you want to produce a still with a text box underneath it, you will have to use something like Photoshop or InDesign from Adobe, both of which cost an arm and half a leg.
What I prefer to do (sorry!) is to use an application called Photo to Movie, in which (among many other things) you can overlap text on a slide/still of any size, or even have a text box below it. Photo to Movie then converts that sequence to a DV file which can be imported into iMovie without any quality loss. It is also the best way to produce high quality slide shows. You can get it here:

  • Captions and video out of sync

How does someone let iTunes know that captions and video are out of sync for a specific TV show? Is this one of those things where they send you a new download link a couple of years later? (Specifically Game of Thrones, Season 4, episode 7 "Mockingbird".

If you haven't already done so, and if you are in a country where TV programmes can be redownloaded, then you could try deleting the episode and redownload it via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage
If you can't redownload it, or if you can but it has the same problem, then try the 'report a problem' page to contact iTunes Support : http://reportaproblem.apple.com
Or you can try contacting iTunes Support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • Is there an equivalent to Aperture for video files?

Between capturing video on my iPhone as well as my point and shoot camera, I now have hundreds of video files in Aperture side by side with my photos.
I'd really like to move these files out of Aperture, but I wonder if anyone can recommed a good program similar to Aperture, but just for video files? I would want it to have the capability to access files on an external drive, the same way that an Aperture library can be kept on an external drive.
    Any suggestions?

Have you considered iTunes as a movie organizer? That is where I am storing my finished movies.
Something mainly for cataloguing video as opposed to an application that is primarily for editing video.
See the iMovie help for organizing video in iMovie:
iMovie '11: Organize your videoiMovie can be used to create movie projects from your raw footage, and to store and organize video into a video library.
I use iMovie to keep all unedited clips tucked away in nested folders in iMovies "Event library; there is simply no use of having thousands of clips that badly need editing bloating up the Aperture library. And I use the "Projects" library to organize my editing projects.
The finished movies are, the ones that I want to use in slideshows and other presentations are stored in my iTunes library.
In iTunes I can tag them with Genres, titles, descriptions and other info.
iTunes lets my browse and earch them in many ways.
iTunes makes them available in the Media browser for other applications. If I need a movie for a slideshow in Aperture I add it from the Media Browser.
iTunes lets me sync the movies to my handheld devices and present them.
For my needs these tho applications together - iMovie for the clips and editing projects, plus iTunes for the finihed movies to shared are just perfect.
In iMovie: events (clips organized in folders by date and location and disk) and projects (organized in folders by topic),
In iTunes: Finished movies to be shared: properly tagged and captioned for searching and sharing
This workflow lets me keep the clips of current editing projects on my mac. Once the movie is finished, I use iMovie to relocate the events with original clips and the project to an external drive and keep only the edited and finished movie in iTunes. But the iMovie event library will till show me, which drives I need to connect to give me easy access to all older events and projects.

  • Captivate 5 freezing issue when trying to add closed captions to video

    Hi There --
I'm trying to add closed captions to a video (.f4v) I inserted as "Slide Video" on a slide in an Adobe Captivate 5 presentation.  I click on the video to select it, go to the properties panel, select "edit video timing" and then click on the closed captions panel to try and add captions and then Captivate completely freezes and locks up so not only can I not add captions to the video, but I have to use Windows task manager to shut it down.
I've seen this process demonstrated in a Lynda.com tutorial, and the instructor didn't seem to have this issue with Captivate 5.
Any thoughts?  Have other users found a work around at all?  I mean, I know I could strip the audio from the video, and then attach it to the slide and do closed captions that way, but it would be way easier (and make a lot more sense) to add it directly to the video, especially since that's what you are supposed to be able to do.
I'm using Captivate 5 on Windows 7.  I also have Captivate 5 on a personal Macintosh and haven't tried yet to see if the issue occurs on that platform as well.  Has anyone else run into this issue?  Sorry for the length -- this is my first forum posting, so I'm trying to provide as much info as possible.

    Hi Dan,
    Welcome to Adobe Captivate Forums.
You can try to add the closed captions to Video after deleting the preferences.
Follow these steps to delete the preferences
    1.  Close Captivate if its launched already
    2. Navigate to C:\Users\<userName>\AppData\Local\Adobe
    3. Locate a folder named "Captivate 5"
    4. Delete the folder
    5. Now Launch Captivate and try your workflow
Let us know if this solved the issue .

  • Will AppleTV be able to Captioned for Deaf/Hard-of-hearing under OS/X-10.5

*Will AppleTV be able to Captioned for Deaf/Hard-of-hearing under OS/X-10.5 Leopard*
AppleTV doesn't provide captioned under current OS/X - Tiger.. I wondered if Apple plan to have AppleTV to be able run with Captioned for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing users under OS/X- Leopard... I would like to have one if it does..
    Lloyd

Will AppleTV be able to Captioned for Deaf/Hard-of-hearing under OS/X-10.5 Leopard
The answer appears to be no. Apple TV uses QuickTIme to play videos, and QuickTime has very poor support for subtitles.
According to the Apple website about Leopard (see this page http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/features/accessibility.html ) Leopard will come with QuickTime 7.2 which happens to be also the current version for Tiger, in other words it will be same (i.e. equally useless).
There is a plugin for QuickTime called Perian which does a reasonably good job of adding subtitle support to QuickTime Player but this feature will not work for Apple TV or Front Row.
There is a program you can buy called SubMerge, which will burn subtitles in to the video image (so they can then never be turned off). Of course you also have to get hold of the subtitles.
Until (if) Apple dramatically improve the support for subtitles in QuickTime, things like Apple TV, iPhone, and Front Row will all be equally limited. Also there is no point Apple putting subtitles in videos on the iTunes Store since they cannot be played via QuickTime.
While it is not related to your question, QuickTime is equally pathetic at supporting surround sound, and multiple audio tracks (e.g. for different languages or directors commentary), again there is no point Apple providing this on the iTunes Store (for films) until QuickTime can support it.
VLC, and even gasp Windows Media Player (for Windows) can do all of this.

  • Purchased any closed-caption movie/video?

Have you purchased a video or movie that has closed-captions?
7.4 should support material that has it and I am interested to find out what movie or video has them to purchase one and use it as a sample to add captions for my videos (podcast) that are distributed through iTunes.
You can activate this function at the View menu item:
    View/Show Closed Captions

I just purchased an episode of "Bones" since someone just told me iTunes supports closed captions. On TV, the programs are all captioned, but I can't get captions up on either iTunes or QuickTime (yes, I followed all instructions and I have the most recent software updates). Only Quicktime Pro has "show movie properties" and I don't want to pay for Pro just to find out if it's captioned or not.
Did a search on the iTunes store for "closed captions" and "closed captioned" nothing came up. I don't see any CC symbol anywhere, and don't want to spend hours searching for things that are captioned. I want that to be a search feature... look for products that are captioned only (no hearies here).
Guess I'm not going to be watching (or buying) any more stuff from iTunes until they work this out.

  • Incorrect and Un-Changeable 'Video Kind' for Videos Purchased From iTMS

Since I can't seem to find any other way to contact Apple except through paid support channels, their suggestion is to post something here. Hopefully this re-wording of other posts I've read will shed more light on the problem.
    To Apple:
Some videos purchased from the iTunes music store have an incorrect 'Video Kind' which means they are sorted incorrectly in iTunes using Apple's new interface in version 7.
Old Battlestar Galactica episodes have a 'Video Kind' of 'Movie' instead of 'TV Show', so they don't appear in the iTunes smart category as TV shows. They appear in 'Movies', and they shouldn't.
The field for these files is locked/ghosted/unchangeable, I'm assuming because of ridiculous DRM requirements or an oversight. But you are enforcing rules which cause your program to incorrectly sort files, and not allowing your customers to fix the problem.
I want all my TV shows to list in your 'TV Shows' top category, but I can't change the 'Video Kind' for those files (bought via the iTunes music store). I have expected this problem to work itself out in the last few iTunes updates, but it hasn't yet. And there are many threads about this in your discussion forums.
Please unlock the 'Video Kind' field in iTunes for videos downloaded from the iTunes music store (Prison Break Season 1, Battlestar Galactica, The Office Season 1, Surface, etc), or give us some kind of utility that will allow us to correct the mis-categorization.
    Thank you!
    -Tony

I quite agree. I'm not sure how much attention, if any, the iTunes dev. team pay to these groups however. The formal feedback route is via iTunes Feedback, where sadly, I suspect, not much attention is paid either.

  • 'Best for video' greyed out in displays prefs

I finally got my macbook(blackbook running 10.5.8) hooked up to my lcd tv (i have been using my old eMac for this a while) & I'm fooling around with the settings to optimize performance & for some reason the 'Best for video' is greyed out in System prefs/Displays but the overscan function works(both in extended desktop mode & in video mirroring mode. I have always used this function on my eMac (OS X 10.3.9) without any problems. For now I'm using the apple mini dvi to video with an Svideo cable until i can afford to go either the hdmi or vga route, but I'd like to optimize this at least..anybody have a clue why 'Best for video' would be greyed out & how to fix this? could this be because of the Intel GMA 950 Gpu chipset in this generation of macbooks? I have posted to a few forums in the last few days with no answers so far...Anybody?

I wouldn't worry too much about that setting. I believe all it ever did was set up a difference between blanking and black level, sometimes called "pedestal" in TV/video terminology. It's no big deal. You are probably correct that the GMA950 doesn't support it, so it's grayed out.

  • Dual 17'' Displays and an NTSC Monitor for Video Editing

I am trying to hook up two 17'' apple monitors and an NTSC television monitor for video editing, but all I have on the back of my G5 tower is one ADC plug and one DVI plug. Any advice on how to make this work would be greatly appreciated.

If you run in anything other than the LCD's native resolution your graphics card will be resampling the image. This inevitably distorts the image as pixels must be discarded to create the display. Typically this softens the image.
