Capture Now in-closed clip recovery?

I was recording using Capture Now via FireWire from my Panasonic HVX200, DVCPRO HD 1080/50i into FCP6. I was recording band sets at an all day festival. I successfully recordered 7, one hour clips with no reported dropped frames. The 8th clip reported dropped frames when I stopped recording using 'escape' but I was distracted and hit escape again which then didn't close the clip.
The footage, or at least the data is still on my hard drive its just not been saved as a clip. This must happen often so my question is, has anyone successfully recovered a clip like this?

Thanks so much. I just switched switched from transcoding to ProRes during capture to capturing native HDV, and, as a result, get to use the Log and Capture functions for the first time.
I think it would have taken me a while before I tried the description box. Thanks for keeping me on schedule!

Capture Now - Auto Divide Clips...

When importing HDV footage I usually use capture now and it breaks down the clips into smaller clips at the points where pause/record was hit when filming.
I have a project now where I'm importing SD 16x9 footage and I'm wondering if there is some sort of setting to get SD video to do the same thing?

Not automatically.
You'll want to spend some time with the manual reading up on "DV Start/Stop Detect", "Sub-clips" as well as "Media Manager".
It gets ugly. Better to simply Log the material then Batch capture.

Capture Clip Mono vs. Capture Now Stereo

I am baffled by the difference between the audio that results from Capture Clip vs. Capture Now. When I capture a clip using Capture Clip (setting the In and Out points), the resulting clip shows the audio as mono with two individual mono tracks. When I capture with Capture Now, the resulting clip shows the audio as Stereo, with the left and right stereo tracks. I cannot understand why this happens. I have tested this using the exact same footage from the camera. Any ideas? I've looked for a setting that can change this. I would prefer that the audio is captured as stereo, since I don't want to have to manually link all my audio tracks in the timeline.

This is way odd: I did a interview using both external mic and a wireless mic. Both tracks are being displayed in the camera (Sony PD 180), but there is no way I can pick up the wireless track in my FCE- of course, is the track I need . Only track that comes up in FCE is the monotrack of the external mic - which is useless

Capturing "Now" FCP automaticly making multiple clips

When capturing "Now" FCP is cutting a single clip into multiple clips during capture, on its own. Any suggestions?

Hi,
it does seem unlikely, but sometimes FCP breaks up continuous shots when working with HDV. Most of the time, this happens towards the end of a shot, so I end up with 3-4 seconds of the first shot.
Very rarely, that happens with MiniDV, too. The TC seems to be fine, but there may be minor problems, and FCP seems to be a bit picky when it comes to that, so you get a TC break when (at least on your deck) there seems to be a continuous TC. And HDV is even worse than DV. But that's just my own experience. Maybe its as simple as your playhead being clogged up?

Capture Now - Making New Master Clips ???

Now i really have a strange thing going on... I am using Capture Now to start an edit session with HDV Footage and it is making NEW Master Clips when there is a stopdown/startup recording on the tape... (a change in setup for a shot)...
I have gone in the User Settings and unclicked all of the stuff dealing with dropframe or timecode breaks with no luck...
Any Help ???

It will make life harder to keep the bin's organized... because i am going to have to view each clip separately -vs- scanning one clip that has all of my b-roll or my uppers / interviews to find the story...
yea i did restart the whole computer and had to reset the capture preferences and such...
I do know about the grief that is associated with timecode breaks in the middle of a shot... dealt with stuff like that in school 7 years ago...

Separate clips and Capture now

Is there a way in Final Cut 6 to capture an entire tape and have Final Cut break the tape up into individual clips up for you along the way? I've been using capture now and I'm getting a little tired of having hour long clips and having to pull my b roll cut by cut out of that. I don't have the time to set in an out points and batch capture. I've considered capturing in iMovie, converting those individual clips to ProRes and working with that but I'm sure there is a better workflow than that to get individual clips out of a miniDV tape. Am I missing something simple? Am I going about this the wrong way? Is this something Final Cut doesn't do?

Well, highlight your clips and in the MARK menu choose DV START/STOP DETECT. That will break the clips up into smaller clips...where every start/stop of the camera happens.

Getting Clip Segments Even With a Simple Capture Now

I am importing HDV video off of a JVC GY HD 100 into Final Cut and for whatever reason even when I do just a simple capture now it always seperates the captures into different cuts. Anyone know why it is doing this and if there is a way around that?

This is a "feature" with HDV capturing. No way around it. This all stems from the fact that HDV uses an Open GOP structure to help with compression.
Though the Knowledge Base Document mentions FCP 5, this has not changed in FCP 6.

FCP 7, 'Capture Now' suddenly stops working

I have been capturing footage from several tapes for many days now, with zero problems. I started doing some more today,
also with no problems, until about the 4th capture attempt. Suddenly, when I hit 'capture now' during playback, nothing at all
happens. I have more than 2TB of free space on my scratch disk, and no capture settings have been changed. I can control
the deck just fine, so communication between the deck and FCP is not an issue. But it literally went from being fine for one clip,
and completely non responsive for the next. I closed FCP, powered down the camera, re-seated the firewire cables, turned the
camera back on and re opened FCP. Same thing. 'Capture Now' doesn't do a thing. I have imported more than 15 tapes without
a single issue, now suddenly I am dead in the water. What am I missing?
I am using a Sony HC-1 with DV footage; Easy Setup set to DV NTSC, Device Control to Firewire NTSC. As I said, device
control works perfectly, but capture suddenly will not initiate. It's as if the 'capture now' button just went dead,
so to speak.

Trashing preferences did the trick, and that app was great. So I was able to get up and running again and get a few more tapes imported. But NOW...
I put in another tape this afternoon, and now when I hit 'capture now' it appears to start the capture, goes for approx. 1 second, then stops and says "searching for media". Nothing I have tried solves this problem. I have powered everything down, unplugged/replugged everything, no help. SO frustrating!

Capture "Preview Disabled" and unable to "Capture Now"

Okay so I don't think I'm the only one but figgured I'd post just to see what the status is.
Today I went to capture some plain ol' DV footage from my Panasonic PV-GS500 minidv camcorder and was unable to... sorta.
If I try to capture I get the message "preview disabled" and at the top it shows (AV)(Unknown).
If I try to capture now i get the message "Attempt to capture video without a video device selected. Please select a video device in your capture presets and try again".
I'm using that NTSC Anamorphic easy setup and had no troubles in the past. I beleive that it might have something to do with QT 7.3 as others have suggested.
What makes it so strange is that if I log clips (monitoring on the cameras LCD itself) and then batch capture it appears to work fine. I can also send video to the Camera.
Finally to top it all off it captures just fine using iMovie - but this is hardly a solution by any means.
So anyone know what the deal is?

You might rey first simply resetting everything to make sure nothing is interfering with the deck control. Power cycle the camera as well. Perhaps if iMovie had been communicating with the camera, FCP may not be able to work correctly with it until it was reset.
I have read of several instance of similar problems having to do with recent upgrades, however. Hope you are not one of the unlucky ones having issues with QT , FCP, OS versions etc.

Capture Now Freezing

I just got a Canopus ADVC 110. Everything connects fine and works well. I can moniter play and watch video in the capture windo. I have my VCR connected to the converter via RCA then to the computer with FireWire. When I try to capture "now" the window that shows what I'm capturing freezes. And I get a clip that show's a half second of action and sound and then a minute of still frame. I'm confused with what to do. I've check a lot of other discussions and help guides online and in books. The iMovie capture works great my Final Cut doesn't. I'm using Final Cut Express 2. Please help I would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using the DV Converter setting in FCE?

Capture Now Limits- Audio Video Sync Issues?

In a creative cow podcast the author mentions that if you capture in FCP for more than 30 minutes, your audio and video can go out of sync, and recommends limiting capture now to 10 minutes.
I was wondering what the communities thoughts or experiences were on this.....

I'm having similar problems although I never used to. But note:
I'm having sync drift problems with material shot with and capture from Sony DV Cam devices. Different clips have different degrees of drift from 1 to 12 frames.
For now, I think I shall resort to a 10min log and batch capture approach.

No sound captured during Capture Now

First time in many moons using FCP. I'm capturing from a mini DV (Canon Eulura 70) using the Capture Now function. The problem is that it appears that no sound is being captured. I've read other posts about not hearing sound during capture... at the moment I'm using headphones connected to the camera and the sound is fine. I'd prefer to use the computer to monitor the sound but I cannot locate a checkbox anywhere to turn this feature on.
When I drop the captured clips onto the canvas no corresponding audio file appears in the timeline, and no audio plays during playback. I've checked the clip setting in log/capture and it's set to capture both video and audio. I've checked System Settings, and under Scratch disks it's set to capture video and audio separately. Audio playback in FCP is set to built-in audio. Sound is working fine in all other applications.
I've tried trashing the preference files but no effect. Also I tried to just capture audio, and as soon as I hit esc, FCP crashes... this is totally repeatable. I also noticed that on the clip setting tab there is a section with a bunch of sliders (7 in all)... don't know what they do, but they are all greyed out.
Camera works fine in iMovie...

There are no check boxes on that tab, only a pull down list entitled "Capture". The choices are Video and Audio, Video only, Audio only. I have it set to Video and Audio. Perhaps there are checkboxes in another version?

Capture Now doesn't capture all

I just starting using HD. The Capture Now is not capturing the whole tape. Plus, it captures segments and numbers them. How do I get it to capture the whole tape?

If there are breaks in the recording, FCP makes new clips by default.
You can change this behavior in preferences:

In general, it's best not to use Capture Now, since you can lose frames.
It's best to set an in point and and an out point, and use Capture Clip.

Help - Capture is creating separate clips **

I'm using FCP 5 with a Sony HC-1
and it seems to find timecode breaks over all my tapes and even when i set the preference unchecked for "create new clip on timecode break"
it seems to do it anyway.

although i'm not sure i get it entirely. what are you referring to "stream" ? timecode?
the material breaks seemingly arbitrarily, not when the camera stopped, etc.
and it does this on various tapes. i have tried "capture now" and it still does it. timecode starts 2 frames later on the next clip, which i find strange. If this happens all the time for everyone using HDV footage, it seems like an incredibly f'ed up glitch in the program.
Is there a work around if you've got a bunch of clips - do you know of a way to "merge" them somehow?
my last thought is that could my settings be wrong for some reason? would it even allow me to control the deck and capture if they were wrong? i'm thinking about the difference between 30fps and 29.97 - and wondering if that's somehow related here.

Capture Now Doesn't work

I recently had audio dropout problems when shooting an event...it was my camcorder's fault....my brand new Sony PD170 ended up getting repaired. Now I'm trying to log and capture the tapes. I have batch captured some of the footage but have been having trouble capturing some clips...it's always the clips with glaring dropout issues. When I try to batch capture these clips they remain offline. I figured it might be a timecode issue, so I tried capturing the offline clips using "capture now." The first clip I tried to capture ran about 5 seconds with no problem and then stopped and I received the message "Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved."
For your information, I know how to do a "Capture Now"....am just experiencing problems for the first time now. Also, want to mention that under User Preferences, I UNchecked "Abort ETT/PTV on dropped frames" and I UNchecked "Abort capture on dropped frames." Under System Settings I checked "Limit Capture Now to 30 mins."
Am I doing something wrong or does it make sense that due to my camera problems I will never be able to capture some of the footage? Thanks so much for your help.
