Capturing from non-controllable device doesn't give a signal in FCE

I have the same problem as in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9458819 but I only have Final Cut Express. If I use the DV Pal setting, there is no problem, I can capture the video (from VHS connected with a Canopus ADVC-55), but it keeps stopping to look for timecodes (which it won't find, as it's a VHS player). During this searching, the video doesn't get captured, but the tape keeps playing (it's what VHS players do). I seems I have to capture using the DV Pal Converter setting, but when i do this, FCE doesn't get a signal, no preview, no nothing. What am I doing wrong?

The device is connected properly, like I said, with the other option it gets the signal,... but skips parts due to the Search for the Timecode (sounds like a Hollywood blockbuster doesn't it?).

  • Fc express and live capture with non-controllable devices

final cut pro allows live capture from non-controllable devices, by selecting this option in the capture window (as i understand). in my case that would be a sony dvc trv900e which i want to use without a tape loaded, and that means no timecode is transmitted.
is it possible to do this in fc express? when i try to capture, i just get the window up saying waiting for timecode...

great - thanks! i've read in numerous places that it is not possible in fc express, which i found hard to believe. i found the preset in the easy setup options. hallelujah!

  • Capturing 720x486 from non-controllable device?

    Hi All,
I am using a widemouth betacamsp deck routed through a sony dsr-11 connected by firewire to a G5 using FCP crossgrade. Capture is set to DVNTSC 48kHz, non-controllable device. This works fine when digitizing non-closed captioned tapes.
I want to preserve the line 21 data, so I need to capture at 720x486...When I set the capture preset to 8-bit uncompressed, the setting for the device preset changes to generic capture template. When I want to capture, I get an error message...something about an audio/video digitizer.
What am I missing? Is there another way to capture at 720x486? Is there another way to route the decks? I've heard that there is a way to do this w/o setting to non-controllable device, but I can't remember what that was.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, if you need more specs I will be happy to provide them.
    Thanks!

  • 'Audio to Video' problem when trying to import from non-controllable device

    Hello,
I am trying to import media from a VHS into FCP, using a 'Dazzle', (DAC from Data Video). In my Capture Settings, under Device Control, I selected 'Non-controllable device', and under the Capture/Input setting, I chose the default, 'DV STSC 48 khz', then did 'Capture Now'. It seemed to work fine, until about half-way through the project, I noticed that the sound did not match up to the people speaking/singing on the video. Should I change the Capture/Input setting to something else? Or, is there another setting I need to make, so that audio/video will match up? Also, should I maybe try a Batch Capture, instead of Capture Now? I just thought of that when writing this - any help would be most appreciated, thank you!
    Kristina

Ooooo.... Hate to say... Dazzle just has bad memories for me. Hollywood Bridge... made by Dazzle...
Nothing but problems. Not sure if yours is the same.
Anyway to use your camera as a passthru for the VCR instead?
Still -- no guarantees sync will line up. For that you need to capture in 15 minute or less segments. Hard to do with VHS that will run for 2 hours... but it's your best bet. Join them up in post if you have to.

  • Importing from Non controllable device via dsr 11 not working

I am importing segments from a dvd (yes, I am allowed to) and for some reason the dsr 11 is not sending the info out via the firewire cable into my G5. I have been getting around this by recording onto a tape, and then importing from the tape, but that is doubling all the work I have to do. I did limit capture now, and read a lot of posts regarding this problem but I haven't been able to solve it. Clearly all my cables are working as I can go from the dvd player to the deck, and from the deck to the computer, though not from the dvd player to the computer via my deck. Anyone have any idea what the problem might be?
    Thanks!

You probably won't get better image quality that MPEG Streamclip which does a file conversion. You should take this question to the Final Cut Pro forum as they will have more experience with the many more setting options available in that application.
If the device is not be recognized no capture process will work, and it has noting to do with the DVD. You need to sort that problem first. Try trashing prefs, rebooting and making sure the device is turned on and in the correct mode before you launch the application.

  • Capture Now with Non-Controllable Device and Timecode from deck

    Hi,
Trying to replace a windows laptop using premiere during our events.
The mentioned system will allow me to get audio/video/timecode all through firewire from the deck AND allow me to "capture now" as a non-controllable device.
I have not been able to find out how to do this with FCP6. I am able to get the timecode I need, but only with the "controllable" device settings I have thus far tried, at which point a "capture now" gives me an error message stating that the tape has ran out (or something of the sort)
With "Non-Controllable Device" selected, I can "capture now" but the slot where the deck's timecode had been located is completely gone and no timecode was recorded on any of the test clips I tried.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hi -
    I'm confused.
The DSR 45A only has one firewire port, if you are plugging your computer into that to source the video, where is the video and timecode source feeding the DSR-45A coming from?
Within the DSR 45A there are internal menu selections that specify the timecode behavior of the DSR-45A, are these menu settings correct?
If you load a pre-recorded tape into the DSR-45A can you control the deck, and successfully capture from it as a controlled device from your FCP computer?
    You said:
we have main deck, a backup deck and a dvr deck recording the primary feed. the capture now stuff is extra bonus!
What are the formats of these decks? Is the timecode feeding the DSR-45A coming from one of them?
    Thanks

  • Naming files when capturing as a non-controllable device in FCP Express

Hey, we've got an iMac here capturing a live feed into Final Cut Express 4.0, coming in as a non-controllable device.. it all works fine however I cant seem to name the files, they all capture as 'Untitled'.. any ideas on how I can name the files? At the moment the usual text areas where you can enter file names is grayed out, and I dont know why!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Here's what we can see in user manual, page 189:
    "Automatic Filenaming During Capture
If you want, you can deselect the checkboxes next to the logging fields in the
Capture window. In this case, the Name field remains empty, so Final Cut Express
names your media file for you. Final Cut Express automatically names media files and
their corresponding clips using the following convention: Untitled, Untitled1,
    Untitled2, and so on."
So may be you have to select some checkboxes to get a custom name instead of untitled.
You can always rename clip in Browser.

  • Non controllable device lost

    hello everybody there,
I am trying to capture analog vhs-footage via a canon mvx350i (the camera serving as a analog-dv converter) but with or without the device connected, the setting for dv-converter does not work. it displays that the device profile for a "non controllable device" is missing.
if I trash prefs, the initial setup dialog ends up with an error -34, and I can not select the basic config for a dv-converter.
It makes no difference if I first connect the camera and then start fce, or vice versa. the configuration is just not available.
capturing does work with iMovie or quicktime, so I can use it as a workaround.
    I recently updated to OS 10.5.2, quicktime 7.4.1, fce is 4.0 .
re-installed FCE and QT. repaired permissions several times.
allthough I can use the iMovie or Quicktime workaround, I like to know where that "non-controllable-device profile" got lost?
    thank you for you help,
    michael

    I found it:
its a problem with the german localisation:
just for trying (and for looking up the correct english menu-items for better communication in the forum)
I switched to english as first language, then startet FCE, everything went fine and easy.
I had then 2 possible options to choose from in easy setup:
DV-Converter and DV-Konverter (the latter beeing German)
if I Choose the english "Converter", it works.
seems the german localisation can not connect to the proper config or something.
I think this is maybe something apple should know. What would be the best way to give them a note?

  • Audio syncing problems w/ non-controllable device

I have some old 8mm camcorder tapes that I'm trying to capture in FCP. I have a digital 8 camcorder that's able to play back my old 8mm tapes and convert the analog video to DV within the camera, and send it via FireWire, just like with standard digital 8 tapes. The difference is that there's no timecode with the old analog 8mm tapes, so I have to change my device settings to "non controllable device." So the problem is that the audio doesn't seem to be sinking properly. When I play back the captured video, the audio is so glitchy, it's completely unintelligible.
The only solution I've come up with would be to first copy the old 8mm tapes  to digital 8 tapes, and then capture the digital 8 tapes in FCP. But I would need my old analog 8mm camcorder for that, and I don't have it anymore.
I'm using FCP 5.1.4. Your suggestions are much appreciated.

iMovie uses a straight transfer of the muxed audio/video stream - the DV format.
This muxed version is a non-native format to FCP and requires rendering as you edit.
Converting to DV/NTSC (DV/PAL) Quicktime de-muxes the audio and video into separate streams. FCP is optimized to edit this Quicktime format without rendering.
Using DV is like trying to edit H.264 files. You can bring these non-native formats into FCP and the program will try to work with the material. However, they will cause problems. It is better to have the material in a FCP native format.

  • Setting FCP X to "Non-Controllable Device"

When importing video into Final Cut Pro X, is it possible to set Device Control to Non-Controllable Device, like you could with FCP 7?
We want to record video into FCP X, and are using a DV camera as a video capture device (through FireWire with the DV cam set to VTR/VCR mode). This works fine in iMovie, but since there is no timestamp, it we can't get it to work in Final Cut Express or FCP X. Our input is video collected from a small camera through a wireless transmitter box. We have been streaming the video from the transmitter, through the DV cam/firewire, to the computer so we can save it.
Do you have any suggestions for making this work? If we were to get an external video capture device like Elgato, would that "add" a timecode/function with FCP X?
    Thanks!
    Ally

    Hi Tom
I tried an experience using an old Samsung 8mm Video Camcorder with the video output through a Canopus ADVC 100. I then tried to capure the video in FCPX.  Well guess what? FCPX captured the video just fine. No video/audio drift. In the capture window on the upper right corner where the time code is displayed, the counter kept rolling even when I stopped the video import.  But the time counter in the top left did keep track of the time. The events browser did break the clips into imported sections. I assume this happened when the camera was stopped and started during the original recording.
When I have more time I'll have to put together a short video from this material to see how it edits.
I'm currently using the trial version of FCPX.  So far, I've completed a couple of short videos from my Sony HDV/DV tape camera, and FCPX uses the time codes from it just fine.  Looks like I'll be dumping FCE in favor of FCPX. Although my regret will be that the plug-ins I've bought can't be used anymore.

  • Non-Controllable Device Reel Logging problem

Why doesn't FCP register the Reel designation I give to clips that were captured from an uncontrollable device? It only records the reel names of clips coming from devices that produce timecodes. Is there a way around this that does not involve me adjusting the logging info for each clip after it's been captured?

Try repairing your permissions as well...then be sure to re-boot

  • Non-controllable device settings

    Hi folks,
I'm having a dickens of a time getting Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 (with Quicktime Pro 7.3) to recognize video, and would appreciate any help. I've set up a DSR-11 DV deck, connected through Firewire 400, to digitize tapes. That is all working fine - device control is working, digitizing goes smoothly. However, when I need to digitize some old VHS tapes, Final Cut isn't recognizing any signal. I have the Device Control set to non-controllable device, the capture/input at DV NTSC 48 Khz (same as the rest of the media). But there is no preview of the VHS tape, and if I attempt to Capture Now, I get a message "The operation could not be completed as there is no video".
This isn't completely true, since iMovie 6.0.3 will recognize and capture the VHS material. I've quit out of Final Cut repeatedly. I've turned the DV deck on and off. Any suggestions? Possible Final Cut 6/QuickTime conflicts? Thanks for your time.

The only thing that comes to mind at the moment.
Go to Easy Setup and refresh your NTSC DV setting - click it to something else, then back again.
Make sure the setup matches in Sequence > Settings. In Log and Capture switch on your Uncontrollable Device setting and give it another shot and hope for some random good luck.
Given that iMovie sees the signal your connections must be good. I'm baffled -hopefully someone else has an idea.

  • Non-Controllable Device Sound Drift

My wife is a dance teacher who recorded some of her choreography using our Sony DVR-PC100. Unfortunately for me she "needs" to rewind the tape and review each take to make sure it is good before proceeding to the next dance. Since the tape I'm given to capture is a mess of broken timecode, I decided to use capture settings for a non-controllable device. The problem that I'm running into is the sound on the captured clip has drifted. I had run into a similar problem in the past when I was capturing and Hi-8 tape using a Sony DCR-TRV480 Digital 8 camera. Since the solution in that case was to set the camera output to 16-bit, I checked the audio settings on the PC100 and found that it is set to 12-bit (which doesn't seem to be a problem when device control is set to Firewire NTSC). I changed the audio setting on the PC100 and recaptured the footage but the sound was still drifting. Why this was still happening didn't make sense to me until I realized that changing the audio setting on the PC100 wasn't going to change the fact that the audio was originally recorded in and still was 12-bit audio. I believe the TRV480 is different because with the analog tapes I was capturing it was digitizing the video on the fly. My question (I apologize for my long-winded explanation) is there a way to capture the broken timecode footage shot with 12-bit audio without getting audio drift. The only solution that I can think of is put the original tape in another camera and output analog footage into the PC100 with the audio set to 16-bit. I should end up with a DV tape with continuous timecode and 16-bit audio. I think I would be OK with 12-bit audio at this point because I would have continuous timecode. Thanks in advance

The camera output is not relevant, only that the tape was actually recorded at. Was this material recorded at 32k or 48k, that is was it 12-bit or 16-bit? Whichever it is that's the setting you have to use in FCP.

  • Has Anyone Else Got A "Non-Controllable Device" Easy Setup In FCE 4 ?

Well has anyone got a PAL "Non-Controllable Device" Easy Setup in FCE 4 ?
I am completely confused as over the past few months I have been fiddling with FCP and FCE.
I am sure I created this Easy Setup in FCP 6 and saved it to default position of HD>Library>Application Support>FCP System Support>Custom Settings.
Strangely it has appeared in FCE 4 ......... I'm sure it is mine because it has the wording, "... capturing via A/D Converter", which I am sure is my phrasing and not Apple's.
Other FCP Easy Setups I have made have not appeared in FCE - just this one.
Now here's something stranger ........ I have deleted the file from the Custom Settings folder but it still appears in both FCE and FCP !
Below are a couple of screenshots from FCE 4 :-
Can anyone explain this weird behaviour please ?

Ian, heres my take on the way it works ...
When FCP/FCE loads up then any Custom Settings are loaded (and held in memory along with everything else) ... when you quit, those settings are written to the prefs file. From that point on they are there for good ie you can trash the Custom Setting but it will still be loaded from the prefs file at launch. Only when you delete the prefs file will the setting go (along with everything else). I'd file it under bug.
By the way, this is not new, its been like this since forever.
    Cheers
    Andy

  • Non-Controllable device load crash

I am loading into my system under the Capture Settings with Non-Controllable Device. I have been able to capture video successfully through this setting before, but the clips were only 1-2 minutes. I am trying to capture a clip that is 8-10 minutes. So after I have finished the live load and the clip is finished I press Escape to end the load. When I do that the preview screen continues to stay up and the rainbow wheel starts to spin. That is when the crash occurs. I do a force shut down and when I restart my media drive is full. It seems that the video file that was being created is now as big as the how much free space was available when I began the load.
I have been able to capture files up to 30 minutes in the past in non-controllable device mode, but now every time i try to capture it crashes. And I have a deadline friday. Please help.

Make sure you have set a Capture Time Limit. Here's why....
When you use Capture Now, the disk system is being asked by FCP to essentially "keep capturing until we tell you to stop ... and no, we don't know HOW much that will be either." It is stressful on the system to be continually wandering around looking for space to stuff those ones and zeros with out any sense of how many they have to accommodate. One solution available to the system is to allocate the ENTIRE empty space on the disk as the potential capture file. This essentially locks the machine as there is no headroom for basic disk operations.
However if you set a limit on capture now, say 60 minutes, the disk system can allocate the space and may seem to be less confused by the process. It still does not know EXACTLY how much you want, but it knows you will not want MORE THAN the limit and therefor can reduce some of the uncertainty.
Better yet is to record to a timecode addressable tape. This allows you to log the tape, then use batch capture. When you do this, the system knows EXACTLY how much space to allocate for each file and is very efficient.
    Good luck.
