Carriage Returns in output
Hi
I am trying to read an Excel file and display output but all I get is a load of carriage return characters (hollow squares) in the output.
It is ok reading .txt files.
Is there something I need to include when reading .csv files?
If so what would that be and where do I need to include it in my code?
Here is the code I am using:
import java.io.*;
public class FileRead {
public void file() {
try {
// Open the file that is the first
// command line parameter
FileInputStream fstream = new FileInputStream("C:/myFile.csv");
// Get the object of DataInputStream
DataInputStream in = new DataInputStream(fstream);
BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in));
String strLine;
//Read File Line By Line
while ((strLine = br.readLine()) != null) {
// Print the content on the console
System.out.println(strLine);
//Close the input stream
in.close();
} catch (Exception e) {//Catch exception if any
System.err.println("Error: " + e.getMessage());
}

Don't accuse me of not listening. None of the suggestions made sense and since I am new to Java I decided to put the discussion in the New to Java forums.
I did get a suggestion from jimbal about my file type being wrong, in this forum, which I never did in the last forum so maybe it is you that can't solve simple tasks?

Dynamic task description in sap inbox displaying carriage returns as an * ?
Hi All,
I have a method in my business object whereby I dynamically create the description of the task for the sap inbox, ie. the description the user sees for the task in their sap inbox .
At first I built this description into an internal table of type tline. I would have thought that each row of the table would begin on a new line but this did not happen. The rows ran into each other but were seperated by a semi colon.
Then I included a carriage return (cl_abap_char_utilities=>cr_lf) at the end of each row. This had the same output but instead of the semi colon, it output an asteriks.
Then I concatenated all the output into a string and passed this to a FM which splits the string at the carriage return and outputs the table. While this behaved as I wanted in a test program (i.e. new line for each row) , once I put the code in the business object, all the rows ran into each other again..
So is anyone aware of a way in which you can dynamcially build the task description and maintain the formatting you require?
I'd be very grateful if anyone could shed any light as I've been trying to get this going for a day and a half now and I'm about ready to give up!!
Many thanks,
Liz.I had same requirement of displaying mutiple lines of workitem description. I used the following method for achieving my functionality.
Suppose multilineline text to displayed in the workitem description is:-
Line 1-> This is the the test text method to display description in the user defined format
Line 2-> which i want to show on my workitem to person approving the workitem.
Line 3-> Hello ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,how are u .............................................test test hello test.
1> I stored the data in an internal table which has one field of type c length 200.
2> I appened the data line by line into the table so that data is not overlapped and my format is maintained.
i.e Data : t_text type table of ty_text,
w_text type ty_text.
w_text-line = Line1.
appen w_text to t_text.
clear w_text.
w_text-line = Line2.
appen w_text to t_text.
clear w_text.
w_text-line = Line3.
appen w_text to t_text.
clear w_text.
3> The internal table T_TEXT will have three lines of data.
4> Now pass this table as it is on the workitem Description.It will display text as per ur format on the workitem description dynamically -
I have a labview sub-VI reading the string being outputted by a pH meter. The meter outputs a 5 line string and labview is only reading up to each lines carriage return, there-by giving me 5 separate strings is there anyway to rectify this and have the 5 line read as one string?

Labview 2010Yes, LabVIEW will automatically update. What happens is that the old serial functions still exist in 7.1 and above but the code (the block diagram) has been modified to use VISA functions. Older versions of LabVIEW are fully supported in this manner. The only way you can avoid the automatic update is to have the old serial functions in an llb and your top level VI refer to these. Having any VI that was part of vi.lib in an llb is a very bad idea and the way to fix things is to remove any VIs in the llb that are part of the LabVIEW distribution.
I don't remember how the old serial config worked and what the new version does with the VISA Configure Serial Port. Your program should only have a single serial config and you might just be able to directly replace that with the VISA configure Serial Port. -
Outputting XML carriage return in HTML via XSLT
Hi,
I have a scenario where I execute a View Object query in ADF to retrieve results from a particular table in the Database. I then iterate through the results in my Java managed bean and manually construct an XML file with all the appropriate tags. I then pass the XML file through a Transformer class in the Java bean based on an XSLT I have created to produce an HTML page. However I have an issue when it comes to handling carriage returns. One of the database table columns can contain carriage returns within its value but in the final HTML page the carriage returns don't have any effect and the text just displays on one line.
In the database, the values are stored with the carriage return and in SQL Developer, Toad etc this can be seen e.g. Text1 Text2 Text3 Text4 will display on separate lines. In the XML, the carriage return seems to still be there as when I open the file my element which contains the carriage returns shows each part on a new line e.g. <textElement>Text1
Text2
Text3
Text4</textElement> (The Text2, Text3 and Text4 all start on a new line at the beginning and there's no prior white space as shown in this post)
The XML file in JDeveloper also shows carriage return arrow symbols where there is one.
The HTML page just shows them as Text1 Text2 Text3 Text4 all on one line. Inspecting the source of the HTML shows that the carriage return is in fact there as it also displays as per the XML with the values on separate lines.
Outputting the value from the View Object in Java to the log shows the value coming out like this - Text1 Text2Text3Text4, which is strange but I know the carriage returns are there so I'm not too fussed about this.
I have tried escaping the characters in the Java by doing str.replaceAll("[\\r\\n]", ""); (but replacing the "" with

 or &x0A;) so in the XML it replaces carriage returns and line feeds with these escaped characters. However, when the XSLT parses the XML it doesn't pick these up and instead actually outputs these actual characters as they are e.g. Text1&x0A;Text2&x0A;Text3&x0A;Text4
So I can confirm that the carriage return is carrying all the way through to the XSL but I can't help but think that maybe I need to do something in the XSL to process this somehow, e.g. doing the equivalent of the 'replace' in Java but I don't know what I need to search for in the XML and also what to actually replace it with..Do I just replace it with a </BR> in HTML?
We also parse the XML using PDF and Excel XSL Transformer class and see the same results.
Any help would be appreciated.
ThanksThat's a very commonly asked question.
HTML doesn't preserve linefeeds, except for the <pre> tag.
You'll have to replace those characters with <BR/> tags in the XSLT.
Search the Internet for terms like "XSLT HTML LF", you'll find some XSLT sample templates to handle the replacement. -
IDoc output is not showing blank fields before the carriage return
When we produce the Material Master IDoc (MATMAS), we send it to a ascii file, to a file port. That works fine when we execute BD10 to produce the IDoc and the file. But, the 3rd party mapping software wants to see every field, even if blank, in each segment it is fed. So, let's say the E1MARCM segment is 750 chars, when you add up all the field lengths in the structure, but the last 5 fields are blank. SAP does not include those trailing blanks at the end of the segment in the file. It just puts a carriage return. How can we configure it to output the trailing blanks?
Hi Mark Mathison
In IDoc ....if no value is passed in to that field then, the field wonu2019t be populated in Doc....
There is no chance of getting blank field in IDocs...

Carriage Returns in XSLT output
I need to output a text file with CRLF characters at the end of each line. I've explicitly put both characters into the XSLT file ( <xsl:text>&#xD;&#xA;</xsl:text> ) but the default oracle.xml.parser.v2 in JDeveloper keeps converting the CR to LF. How can I force the parser to output the CR?
This is incorrect. You can tell the processor to keep and output whitespace nodes if you use the character encodings (&#xA; &#xD; &#x20; &#x9;) and the output method is text. I am getting the correct output for space-only nodes (&#x20;) and the linefeed character (&#xA;). I am also getting a whitespace-only character for the carriage return (&#xD;) node, it is just the <em>wrong</em> character - the parser is converting it to &#xA;, so I am getting two linefeed characters where my stylesheet specifies &#xD;&#xA;.

How can i put three carriage returns (ENTERs) in this script's output?
I have a script like
begin
select tablename list;
dbms_output.put_line(q'[Altering selected tables' datalength]' );
for i in 1..x loop
execute immediate v_sql;
end;While executing this in SQL*Plus, the output currently looks like
Altering selected tables' datalength
ALTER TABLE EMP MODIFY (ENAME VARCHAR2(30 CHAR ))
ALTER TABLE DEPT MODIFY (DEPTNO VARCHAR2(30 CHAR ))
ALTER TABLE ARCHIVE_CNG MODIFY (TMAT_ENABLED CHAR(30 CHAR ))
.But i need three ENTERs (Carriage Returns) after the text Altering selected tables' datalength.
ie the output should look like
Altering selected tables' datalength
ALTER TABLE EMP MODIFY (ENAME VARCHAR2(30 CHAR ))
ALTER TABLE DEPT MODIFY (DEPTNO VARCHAR2(30 CHAR ))
ALTER TABLE ARCHIVE_CNG MODIFY (TRIGGER_ENABLED CHAR(30 CHAR ))
ALTER TABLE ARCHIVE_CONFIG MODIFY (USER_ID VARCHAR2(30 CHAR ))

What is the difference between a carriage return and a newline ? Aren't they both the same?
Edited by: user659394 on May 13, 2009 10:28 AMThey are different characters, one is chr(13) and the other is chr(10). Many editors will treat them the same but by default, when you hit the Enter key on your keyboard the character generated depends on your operating system
Mac chr(13), unix chr(10), windows chr(13)||chr(10)
That's basically the difference between an ascii and a binary transfer between machines with different operating systems. In a binary transfer nothing is changed in the transfer. In an ascii transfer carriage return/newline characters are converted to the default for the operating system. -
hi friends
using `n how can i add two empty line (two carriage return), between these two lines in the output file?
PS C:\> $env:COMPUTERNAME | add-content c:\file.txt
PS C:\> $Env:USERDOMAIN | add-content c:\file.txt
i tested "$env:computername`n`n`n$env:userdomain" | add-content c:\file.txt but it results in
myPCMyDomain
but i wanted the contents of the output file be like this:
MyPC
#empty line here
#empty line here
MyDomain
i tested many other forms but didn't work.
thanksI tried it, as well. The line breaks were respected in the PowerShell console, Programmer's Notepad, and Word; they weren't in Notepad.
You are using a Unicode file. Locale is what?
If you just want notepad compatible line breaks then do this:
del file.txt ; "$env:computername`r`n`r`n`r`n$env:userdomain" | add-content file.txt ;notepad file.txt
Look in hex to see that `n is ^L or 0xA and is only one character. CrLf is 0xD 0xA - two characters.
My programmers editors and VS all understand a single ^L as a line break so does PowerShell. Only DOS/Notepad and other utilitis don't understand this..

How do I add a carriage return to the output ?
I have a listBox with 15 values. That list box is connected to a textBox. The text box prints only the selected items from the listBox (thanks try67 for the help getting that set up). Now what I would like to do is have each of the items that are selected to appear seperately in lieu of having one lone continuous line. I think what I need to do is add a carriage returne (or two) between each item selected. Here is the code I have for custom calculation script
var v = this.getField("DiagnosisList").value;
if (typeof v=="string") event.value = v;
else event.value = v.join(", ");
I triend adding /r/n but I keep geting syntax error. Thanks for any assistane.I appreciate you assistance, but this is not going to work. The narrative on the listBox for each item is so large, that it either gets chopped off or if I set the text size to auto it is too small. Is there a way to display the list items in a format that 'wraps'? If not then I will neet to set it up with check boxes now, but here is how the format should work:
() item one
() item two
() item three
then allow certain ones to be checked,
(x) itme one
() item two
(x) item three
and based on the ones checked, those are the only ones that print
Item one.
Item two. -
Hello,
I have written some code which extracts data from a MySQL
database and stores it in a CSV file using CFFILE.
However, the database includes data inserted from an HTML
textarea form element which is stored in a MySQL text field. The
textarea data includes carriage returns which, when written to a
CSV file, force a new line which makes the data messy.
Is there a way of removing the carriage returns?
Many thanks,
SimonI recently had to deal with a similar situation. The
differences are:
1. My file is pipe delimited.
2. My source data comes from a vendor application, not an
html form.
The following code worked for me.
<cffile action="write" nameconflict="overwrite"
addnewline="no" output=""
file="d:\dw\dwweb\work\#CaseFileName#">
<cfoutput query="casedata">
<cffile action="append"
file="d:\dw\dwweb\work\#CaseFileName#"
output="#caseid#|strip a bunch of
fields|#theatre_mcase#|#Replace(pre_op_diag, chr(10), ' ',
'all')##chr(13)#">

Oracle Reports 6i Delimied Format and Carriage Returns
Hi
I'm using Oracle Reports 6i to generate a report to a text file using delimited format so I can read it in Excel. I've done some testing putting some information in the layout but it seems that all my data is generated in one line. It does not generate the carriage return for the multiple rows I need. Is this standard functionality?. If so, that means I have to generate the file using PL/SQL to get the control I want?Whew...lot's of questions...let's see if I can help (at least a little)...
1. Quite possibly, the user is/was pulling the image from the database? I do this in my environment, so it might be worth a look.
2. You should be able to print in any format from the web. You may need to adjust your destype/desname/desname parameters.
3. Only thing I can think of here is that maybe the original report was not written using a standard web-friendly font?
4. There's a couple of ways you can get data into an excel file:
A. Use DDE and poke the data right into it (messy when you need to print the regular Oracle report too).
B. Add an option to print to file and set the desformat to DELIMITEDDATA. Be sure to go through the data model and set Exclude from XML Output to 'Yes' for fields you don't need. Also, be aware that this may not come out in the same order as they do on the printed report. You can read about this on Metalink.
Hopefully that helps you a little bit. :)

How do we remove Carriage Return (line feed) inserted in FCC files
Hi Experts,
The file that we generate has a carriage return at the end.
Is there any way in which we can remove this carriage return (line feed) from the file?
The FCC parameters used at our end are as below:
structure.filedNames:
structure.fieldFixedLengths:
structure.fixedLengthTooShortHandling: Cut
Kindly tell us a solution ASAP.
Thanks & Regards
DhwaniDear All,
Let me elaborate on my query
Consider that the files output looks like below:
12 34 45 545 5454 UL
23 33 43 434 4545 FG
45 44 44 586 6535 GM
Now there is an extra line(Carriage Return) getting inserted after the last line 45 44 44 586 6535 GM which is not required at our end.
The cursor of the file instead of stopping on the last character M, points to the next line.
Can you please suggest how to remove this extra line from the files.
I dont understan how will remove context help in this case.

Carriage Return with the text in xdofx
Hi
I have to insert a carriage return with in a text I tried <?xdoxslt:chr(10)?>
e.g <?xdofx:if x>'0' then 'Approved. Thank you.' else 'Disapprov.Thank you. ' end if?>
so the output should be
Approved
Thank You
I need carriage return between Approved and Thank You
ThanksUse this:
<?xdoxslt:ifelse(x>0, concat('Approved', xdoxslt:chr(10), 'Thank you.'), concat('Disapprov. ', xdoxslt:chr(10), 'Thank You.'))?>
I tried this and it works
<?xdoxslt:ifelse(10>9, concat('Approved', xdoxslt:chr(10), 'Thank you.'), concat('Disapprov. ', xdoxslt:chr(10), 'Thank You.'))?>

I have a macro that copies data from a Target workbook then pastes the data into a destination workbook. I then wish to use lookups in the destination workbook to view specific data from the pasted range of data on a separate sheet.
The problem is, the cells that contain numbers from the pasted data have the green dogeared error flags associated with the cell. The only way I can make a lookup function work, is to go to each cell and manually enter a carriage return after each entry.
The code for the macro is given below. What can be done so that the pasted data contains no errors associated with the number cells? Or can a second macro be written to clean the data. If so can you help me out? Thanks in advance.

DAPulliam64Hi DAPAugust64,
The green "dogeared error flags" of the cells means that you paste numbers in these cells, but they're formated as Text.
So you need to change the cells back to the correct format so that the lookup function works fine. You can simply call this method after pasting:
ActiveSheet.Cells(1, 1).NumberFormat = "General"
ActiveSheet.Cells(1, 1) = ActiveSheet.Cells(1, 1).Text
Or use PasteSpecial method to paste the numbers as well as it's format:

Carriage Returns and Tabs in XML element
I have a number of carriage returns and tabs within an xml element. When I take that element I would like it to transform to html in which I am then displaying within a JEditorPane. However, when I do this it is one long string. I have tried the xml:space="preserve" within that element and this still is not working.
Here is part of the xml with the carriage return line feeds. The element that I am talking about is called pseudocode. You can see it is displayed correctly below.
Design Document XML : <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?><design-doc><title-page><title>Testing Document</title><class-prepared-for>Lloyd</class-prepared-for><authors>Ben Garbers</authors><date-created>September 23, 2004</date-created></title-page><introduction text="This is the introduction. if (player =null)
NullPlayerException;
if (NOT (isPlayerNameExist(player)))
throw PlayerNameNotExistException;
/* Ensure player name exist in the team already*/
i ? 1;
while (i <= length(mPlayers)) {
if (mPlayers.mPlayerName != playerName)
throw PlayerNameNotExistInTeamException;
this.mPlayers ? this.mPlayers - player;</pseudocode>
However, when I do the transformation I get the following with the pseudocode:
/* Ensure that player name exist in the system*/if (player =null) NullPlayerException; if (NOT (isPlayerNameExist(player))) throw PlayerNameNotExistException; /* Ensure player name exist in the team already*/ i ? 1; while (i <= length(mPlayers)) { if (mPlayers[i].mPlayerName != playerName) throw PlayerNameNotExistInTeamException;}this.mPlayers ? this.mPlayers - player;
It looks like it adds some spaces but no carriage returns or line feeds.
My transformation code is the following:
public ParseFile(String xmlString) {
try {
//Here we will load the correct style sheet for the message
//that will be formatted.
String urlString = "DesignDocument.xsl";
URL url = this.getClass().getResource(urlString);
System.out.println("URL to style sheet = " + url.toString());
String styleSheetName = url.getFile();
System.out.println("Style sheet name : " + styleSheetName);
InputStream styleSheetInputStream = this.getClass().getResourceAsStream(urlString);
//We will than load our SAXParerFactory and parse the message.
SAXParserFactory SPFactory = SAXParserFactory.newInstance();
SPFactory.setValidating(true);
SAXParser sp = SPFactory.newSAXParser();
XMLReader sax2parser = sp.getXMLReader();
//NO Validation done on for this because we do NOT have a DTD.
sax2parser.setFeature(

sax2parser.setContentHandler(new FileContentHandler());
//we create a character array of the length of the xml message String
char[] messageCharacterArray =
new char[xmlString.length()];
// we then put the xml string into the character array.
messageCharacterArray = xmlString.toCharArray();
// after this ew end up creating a CharArrayReader that will be used by the Sax
// parser to parse the xml.
CharArrayReader xmlCharArrayReader =
new CharArrayReader(messageCharacterArray);
// we put the xml character array within the Input Source which will then be parsed
// by the Sax2 parser.
InputSource in = new InputSource(xmlCharArrayReader);
// Use a Transformer for outputting the message into our formatted xml using
// the stylesheet defined up in a messages own sxl stylesheet file.
TransformerFactory tFactory = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
tFactory.setURIResolver(new BasicURIResolver());
StreamSource stylesource = new StreamSource(styleSheetInputStream);
Transformer transformer = tFactory.newTransformer(stylesource);
// transformer.setOutputProperty(OutputKeys.INDENT, "yes");
// transformer.setOutputProperty("{http://xml.apache.org/xslt}indent-amount", "2");
// Properties properties = new Properties();
// properties.setProperty("indent", "yes");
// properties.setProperty("{http://xml.apache.org/xslt}indent-amount", "2");
// transformer.setOutputProperties(properties);
// We will use a ByteArrayOutputStream to put our transformed xml.
ByteArrayOutputStream bos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
StreamResult result = new StreamResult(bos);
SAXSource source = new SAXSource(in);
transformer.transform(source, result);
String s = bos.toString();
StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
//This will make sure the Version Line is not shown.
BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new StringReader(s));
String line = "";
while ((line = br.readLine()) != null) {
sb.append(line);
bos.close();
br.close();
formattedXmlString = sb.toString();
System.out.println("--------------------------------");
System.out.println(formattedXmlString);
System.out.println("--------------------------------");
} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
I have been searching and trying to figure this out forever. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bottom line is that I want carriage returns and tabs to work when transferring from the xml to xsl.I get the following line when adding the <pre> tags.
/* Ensure that player name exist in the system*/if (player =null) NullPlayerException; if (NOT (isPlayerNameExist(player))) throw PlayerNameNotExistException; /* Ensure player name exist in the team already*/ i ? 1; while (i <= length(mPlayers)) { if (mPlayers[i].mPlayerName != playerName) throw PlayerNameNotExistInTeamException;}this.mPlayers ? this.mPlayers - player;
On the screen this is shown on 1 line. It looks like the tabs are working correctly. However, the carriage return, line feeds do not seem to be working. The xml that is pushed into the transformation has the carriage returns and line feeds and is formatted correctly. There has to be something happening when the xsl takes the xml String. When I add <BR></BR> within the xml that doesn't seem to work either.
I am really sumpted. If you could help DrClap I would really be appreciated.
