CATALINA_HOME error

Hi,
I've just started on Java, and therefore don't really know anything much. I've installed j2se and tomcat. I set the environment variables JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME as instructed in the installation guide as follows:
JAVA_HOME C:\j2sdk1.4.2_04
CATALINE_HOME C:\tomcat\jakarta-tomcat-4.0.30
I set these variables by going to Control Panel->System->Advanced Tab->System Variables
When I try to start Tomcat, I get this error message: The CATALINA_HOME environment variable is not defined correctly......
Could someone please help me how to fix this? Am I doing something wrong, or missing something?
Thanks

Do you start tomcat from a command line or as a service?
Try opening a command window and navigating to the %CATALINA_HOME%\bin directory. Enter the command 'echo %CATALINA_HOME%' and verify that the correct values appear.

    I ended up uninstalling every java this and that.. and tomcat.
    Then installing only the j2sdk1.4.0_03 SDK.
    Then set up JAVA_HOME for all users and modified the path with full path to the bin (c:\j2sdk1.4.0_03\bin)
    Lastly I reinstalled tomcat and, voila, everything was working.
    It can be quite maddening when you THINK you did everything by the boook and something doesn't work. When you replied and confirmed that I was on the right track.. uninstalling and trying yet again became les frustrating an option.
    Thanks.
    BTW- I needed this env to do the projects in what sems to be a very interesting book.. "macromedia Flash MC application design and development" by Jessica Speigel .. published by New Riders.
    Her flash help website is at www.were-here.com.. the projects in the book are for flash-based multiplayer games and multi-user formums and such.

  • Cast error in JSP page

    if this is not the right forum, please some one show where.
    I created a EJB pack and deployed at the server. Made a java program client to test it and all is Ok. But when I try to use a jsp page to use the service, I get a java.lang.ClassCastException message.
    I can get the context , the reference , but when I try to
    get a reference to the bean's Home interface the error happens.
    This is the line with the problem:
    ServiceHome1 home =(ServiceHome1) PortableRemoteObject.narrow (ref, ServiceHome1.class);
    the same line runs ok at a java program at the same machine.
    I use Tomcat/Jboss and the Jboss libs are in %CATALINA_HOME%/commom/lib

    Do you import the ServiceHome1 in your jsp page?

    Have you mapped the servlet class in Web.xml ?
    eg.
    <servlet>
              <servlet-name>SName</servlet-name>
              <servlet-class>com.package1.ServletClass</servlet-class>
         </servlet>
         <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>SName</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>/SName</url-pattern>
         </servlet-mapping>

    Thanks.

    Hi Dietmar,
    Thanks for your reply.
    There's no jasperreports-fonts-3.7.4.jar file in the webapps/JasperReportsIntegration/WEB-INF/lib folder. The only font file available is jasperreports-fonts-4.5.0.jar. I've downloaded the 3.7.40 jar file and saved it in the same folder without deleting the 4.5.0.jar. I tried to run the Test application again and still give me the same error.

    I also tried the suggestion from the link provided by Nick. However, the syntax is for SUN environment and we are using IBM so I searched the equivalent of that command in IBM. Our DBA added the Java system property in the startup script by adding these 2 lines. But it errored out on the first 2 lines. I'm not sure if I do have the right syntax.

  • Error when run a jsp page in tomcat

    I carefully follow all instruction to install and config j2sdk1.4.2 and Apache Tomcat/5.0.28. After completing, I can run all sample applications about JSP and Servlet in Tomcat manager. I also test my own servlet application and it also works.
    But I fail to run a very simple jsp page. Although I already set environment variables such as CATALINA_HOME, JAVA_HOME, CLASSPATH as directed but it seem to not be able to compile jsp page.
    ( I can compile other java classes in command line. )
    Below is the error i receive . This error takes me lots of time to consider.
    I look for your help ( please describe as clear as goog ). Thanks a lot.

  • Error on startup of Tomcat

    I am attempting to use the Tomcat servlet engine with Apache on Win 98. The versions I am using are Apache/1.3.20 and Tomcat 4.0.1. I have unzipped the tomcat binary to C:\jakarta-tomcat-4.0.1 and set CATALINA_HOME to C:\jakarta-tomcat-4.0.1.
    I am running the same versions of Apache and Tomcat at work on NT 4.0 and had no problems. But on my Win 98 machine when I try to start Tomcat with "startup" I am getting the following (at least I think it is the equivalent on startup with what I'm getting on shutdown--the startup console window is closing before I can capture the message):

    Roy

    Very simple. On the start up Jakarta is looking for server.xml file. Apparently, it can not read it.
    Check all your env. variables. Make sure you have
    JAVA_HOME, TOMCAT_HOME set correctly. If TOMCAT_HOME is not set up correctly, it would not be able to locate server.xml file.

  • Tomcat JDBC Realm Database Connection Error

    Hello all,
    I am trying to edit the server.xml file on Tomcat so I can use the JDBC Realm instead of the MemoryRealm. Hence, I will be able to read users, passwords and roles from a relational database instead of from the tomcat-users.xml.
    I have tried following all the guides on the net I can find, my server.xml looks as follows (after making changes to allow it to use JDBC realm). The only problem is, when I try to run the application the server outputs the following: (after all of these errors have been kicked up a pop-up box then appears titled "Tomcat Manager Application", it asks for a User Name and Password. I have tried the standard user name of "ide" and the password next to it in tomcat-users.xml but it won't accept it. (I am using the netbeans IDE)).
    Please could someone suggest any ideas of how I can get the server.xml to work with JDBC realm?

            associated "Container" (normally an Engine) for processing.
            By default, a non-SSL HTTP/1.1 Connector is established on port 8080.
            You can also enable an SSL HTTP/1.1 Connector on port 8443 by
            following the instructions below and uncommenting the second Connector
            entry.  SSL support requires the following steps (see the SSL Config
            HOWTO in the Tomcat 5 documentation bundle for more detailed
            instructions):
            * If your JDK version 1.3 or prior, download and install JSSE 1.0.2 or
            later, and put the JAR files into "$JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext".
            * Execute:
            %JAVA_HOME%\bin\keytool -genkey -alias tomcat -keyalg RSA (Windows)
            $JAVA_HOME/bin/keytool -genkey -alias tomcat -keyalg RSA  (Unix)
            with a password value of "changeit" for both the certificate and
            the keystore itself.
            By default, DNS lookups are enabled when a web application calls
            request.getRemoteHost().  This can have an adverse impact on
            performance, so you can disable it by setting the
            "enableLookups" attribute to "false".  When DNS lookups are disabled,
            request.getRemoteHost() will return the String version of the
            IP address of the remote client.

                    By defining this element, means that every manager will be changed.
                    So when running a cluster, only make sure that you have webapps in there
                    that need to be clustered and remove the other ones.
                    A cluster has the following parameters:
                    className = the fully qualified name of the cluster class
                    name = a descriptive name for your cluster, can be anything
                    mcastAddr = the multicast address, has to be the same for all the nodes
                    mcastPort = the multicast port, has to be the same for all the nodes
                    mcastBindAddr = bind the multicast socket to a specific address
                    mcastTTL = the multicast TTL if you want to limit your broadcast
                    mcastSoTimeout = the multicast readtimeout
                    mcastFrequency = the number of milliseconds in between sending a "I'm alive" heartbeat
                    mcastDropTime = the number a milliseconds before a node is considered "dead" if no heartbeat is received
                    tcpThreadCount = the number of threads to handle incoming replication requests, optimal would be the same amount of threads as nodes
                    tcpListenAddress = the listen address (bind address) for TCP cluster request on this host,
                    in case of multiple ethernet cards.
                    auto means that address becomes
                    InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostAddress()
                    tcpListenPort = the tcp listen port
                    tcpSelectorTimeout = the timeout (ms) for the Selector.select() method in case the OS
                    has a wakup bug in java.nio. Set to 0 for no timeout
                    printToScreen = true means that managers will also print to std.out
                    expireSessionsOnShutdown = true means that
                    useDirtyFlag = true means that we only replicate a session after setAttribute,removeAttribute has been called.
                    false means to replicate the session after each request.
                    false means that replication would work for the following piece of code: (only for SimpleTcpReplicationManager)
                    <%
                    HashMap map = (HashMap)session.getAttribute("map");
                    map.put("key","value");
                    %>
                    replicationMode = can be either 'pooled', 'synchronous' or 'asynchronous'.
                    * Pooled means that the replication happens using several sockets in a synchronous way. Ie, the data gets replicated, then the request return. This is the same as the 'synchronous' setting except it uses a pool of sockets, hence it is multithreaded. This is the fastest and safest configuration. To use this, also increase the nr of tcp threads that you have dealing with replication.
                    * Synchronous means that the thread that executes the request, is also the
                    thread the replicates the data to the other nodes, and will not return until all
                    nodes have received the information.
                    * Asynchronous means that there is a specific 'sender' thread for each cluster node,
                    so the request thread will queue the replication request into a "smart" queue,
                    and then return to the client.
                    The "smart" queue is a queue where when a session is added to the queue, and the same session
                    already exists in the queue from a previous request, that session will be replaced
                    in the queue instead of replicating two requests. This almost never happens, unless there is a
                    large network delay.
                    -->
                    <!--
                    When configuring for clustering, you also add in a valve to catch all the requests
                    coming in, at the end of the request, the session may or may not be replicated.
                    A session is replicated if and only if all the conditions are met:
                    1. useDirtyFlag is true or setAttribute or removeAttribute has been called AND
                    2. a session exists (has been created)
                    3. the request is not trapped by the "filter" attribute
                    The filter attribute is to filter out requests that could not modify the session,
                    hence we don't replicate the session after the end of this request.
                    The filter is negative, ie, anything you put in the filter, you mean to filter out,
                    ie, no replication will be done on requests that match one of the filters.
                    The filter attribute is delimited by ;, so you can't escape out ; even if you wanted to.
                    filter=".*\.gif;.*\.js;" means that we will not replicate the session after requests with the URI
                    ending with .gif and .js are intercepted.
                    The deployer element can be used to deploy apps cluster wide.
                    Currently the deployment only deploys/undeploys to working members in the cluster
                    so no WARs are copied upons startup of a broken node.
                    The deployer watches a directory (watchDir) for WAR files when watchEnabled="true"
                    When a new war file is added the war gets deployed to the local instance,
                    and then deployed to the other instances in the cluster.
                    When a war file is deleted from the watchDir the war is undeployed locally
                    and cluster wide

    So looking through the java api docs, I found that the tcUtilJDBCOperations has a connect string for the database. Below is the info it outlines. The questions I have it this. How do you specify the psdriver and URL along with do I need to do this as a persistent instance then add my selectstatement as a part of this or can I just specify this and the select statement will use this connection? Any help you can give would be appreciated.

    I am running Win Me;
    I have all the environment variables set in AUTOEXEC.BAT, including the PATH ; but after many tests I am convinced that autoexec.bat is not being run at all;
    I tried adding an auto batch command file to be run every time a dos box was opened but while that runs ok it still leaves the problem outstanding;

    2 - He now has it working (reply #3)
    3 - Just because it works for you doesn't mean it will
    work for him. You have made assumptions about where
    he has installed java and tomcat.
    4 - If you glance up at the first post, you will see
    his java and tomcat paths included in there - they
    look nothing like the stuff you gave him. Following
    your instructions to the letter will only cause it to
    break.
    Please try and take a bit more care.

    Hello,
    I have set the verbosity of Ant to Debug, and the resulting log after clicking on the Run Main Project button is here below. The same error happens in Debug Maing Project.
    It seems to be difficult to get it working, and i cant understand why. After all, i used it for 1 year without problems, and now i m struggling...
    See you,
    Luca

    After going throgh Google search i came to know that it problem with Tomcat CLASS PATH.
    I checked C:\Hyperion\HyperionPlanning\AppServer\InstalledApps\Tomcat\5.0.28\HyperionPlanning\bin\startHyperionPlanning.bat.
    It says
    " REM Hyperion Workspace startup script for tomcat server
    REM Check HYPERION_HOME
    if "%HYPERION_HOME%" == "" set HYPERION_HOME=C:\Hyperion
    SET CATALINA_HOME=%HYPERION_HOME%\common\appServers\Tomcat\5.0.28
    SET CATALINA_BASE=C:\Hyperion\HyperionPlanning\AppServer\InstalledApps\Tomcat\5.0.28\HyperionPlanning
    CALL %CATALINA_BASE%\bin\setSAPEnv.bat
    CALL %HYPERION_HOME%\common\config\setJAVA_HOME.bat
    REM Setting custom parameters
    SET SETPARAM_SCRIPTNAME="%CATALINA_BASE%\bin\setCustomParams.bat"
    if exist %SETPARAM_SCRIPTNAME% (
    call %SETPARAM_SCRIPTNAME%
    call "%HYPERION_HOME%\common\appServers\Tomcat\5.0.28\bin\startup.bat"
    I checked my environment variables every thing is fine.
    Where should i set the Tomcat class path to web client. or
    it is due to another reason, if so what could be the solution.
    Thanks in advacnce

    Hello,
    JohnGoodwin is correct you will need to create a Planning application and also generate your HspJSHome.properties and make sure it is in the right location to be picked up by the start up which should be something like:
    C:\Hyperion\HyperionPlanning\AppServer\InstalledApps\Tomcat\5.0.28\HyperionPlanning\webapps\HyperionPlanning\WEB-INF\classes
    Also if you are starting the JVM as a service it might not have all the correct CLASSPATH information and if you have not already you might try starting the JVM using the startHyperionPlanning.bat file from the command line. Many times you will get better output from that when troubleshooting.

    Whenever I start the tomcat server, Im getting an error in netbeans?
    Starting of Tomcat failed. '127.0.0.1' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
    Even I set the path & catalina_home in Environment variables. I start the startup.bat file and catalina.bat file also.
    I'm waiting for your quick response.

    Hi Ershad,
    I think this issue is more related to Apache Tomacat, I would suggest you ask in Apache Tomcat forum for a better support, it is appropriate and more experts will assist you.
