Catalyst black screen

I have installed the Catalyst and Catalyst-utils packages available in AUR.  I
configured with 'aticonfig -f' and ran startx, all I got was a black screen.
However, I'm still able to switch to other virtual terminals, and from the log
the server appears to be running. I can even execute programs fron .xinitrc.
I've also tried starting it through kdm, and get the same black screen.  Startx
and kdm both work fine if I use vesa.
Here's my Xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log from a typical run.

So I've googled, and read that both xrandr and aticonfig can dynamically enable
monitors, but not at the same time.  I tried enabling my monitor with "xrandr --output CRT2 --auto" (from .xinitrc, heh) and changed the resolution, but nothing happened.
So I wanted to try enabling it with the catalyst utils. I tried to disable xrand
r with 'aticonfig --set-pcs-str="DDX,EnableRandR12,FALSE"'.  This put the right
key in the right place, and the Xorg.0.log reports "RandR disabled". But when I
run X again, the xrandr client functions and aticonfig refuses to manage display
s.
So I'm kind of stumped.  I'd appreciate it if someone could go over the log and
see if there are any clues I missed.

Sorry, I post for the third time but I have something new.
The problem is not catalyst, because if I use the free driver on the HD 5xxx, I am the same problem (black screen)
I think it's my graphics card which was not detected or something else. But when I do : lspci. The HD5xxx was detected at the PCI 2:0:0.
This is my Xorg.log with catalyst
Xorg.log with free driver
And if you want  my xorg.conf
(I hope you can understand me :s)
Thanks !

Can you Ctrl-Alt-Backspace out of the X server?
Nothing jumps out at me in your X server log.  You can try paring your xorg.conf down to a minimum and try and let X figure it all out.  Here's mine, for example:
    Section "Device"
    # Identifier "VideoCard"
    # Driver "fglrx"
    # Option "monitor-PANEL" "InternalLCD"
    #EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "VideoCard"
    driver "radeonhd"
    Option "monitor-PANEL" "InternalLCD"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "VideoCard"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
    Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "Enable"
    EndSection
    Section "DRI"
    Group "video"
    Mode 0660
    EndSection
You can comment out (or delete) the "Device" section that has radeonhd in it, and uncomment the fglrx one (I haven't tried fglrx on Arch64 yet, but plan to to see if it resolves some issues I'm having).

  • Radeon HD 3870 + Catalyst 9.8 & fglrx drivers = Black Screen. (arch64)

I've installed Arch on my Alienware M17.
First off, ATI and RadeonHD drivers do work. I have KDE 4.3 installed, etc., etc.
I do know how bad ATI support is. I used to use Ubuntu 8.10, and upgrading to 9.04 had borked my video bad.
However, like the title says, installing the Catalyst drivers brings me to a black screen that requires a hard reset/poweroff.
I've been browsing forums and google for the past 12 hours trying to find a solution; here's what I have so far:

    X.Org Server 1.6.3.901 (1.6.4 RC 1)
Catalyst 9.8 x86_64 (including catalyst-utils) from AUR (using yaourt -S)
Before installing fglrx, I had installed ati and radeonhd drivers, got the display working, uninstalled them (libgl and vesa as well), installed fglrx (all from a fresh Arch install), tweaked xorg.conf, added fglrx to Modules in rc.conf, and viewed the Xorg.0.log file with no "(EE)" lines.
I noticed that there are a lot of warnings regarding AIGLX, and installing catalyst from AUR displays a message (warning?) saying something like "ati-dri" was a dependancy and/or is missing.
    modprobe -l | grep fglrx
    has the result of: "video/fglrx"
I even installed the lib32-catalyst-utils libraries and that had no effect that I could see.
Please help. This is all that is stopping me from giving into Arch.
    Thank you for your time.

  • Black Screen on switch to tty after install proprietary catalyst-hook

After Install the latest version of :
    catalyst-total 14.9-1
from AUR I can startx and login to x sessions, But I can'nt switch to tty right after that executing startx and entering into X Also after suspend.
When i pressing C+M+F2 or even logout from X Session Then i can'nt access to tty consoles and just a black screen appears and nothing work even my mouse.
I have followed wiki and some forum workarounds to this issue for example disabling KMS or put vga= kernel param on grub,...but none of them dose'nt solved the problem!
    I have a ATI 6470M card :
    # lspci -nn | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Seymour [Radeon HD 6400M/7400M Series] [1002:6760]
    also I have installed following:
    linux -> 3.16.4-1
    linux-headers -> 3.16.4-1
    xorg-server -> 1.15.2-1
    Any idea? please.
    Sorry for my english

I also use a Samsung N220 and found two ways to avoid this issue:
intel_idle.max_cstate=0 as a kernel boot parameter
disable CPU power saving in BIOS settings

  • Catalyst/fglrx startx freeze - blank/black screen

Sometimes, usually the second or third time I use startx after a reboot, video is not displaying.  I get a black screen (blank) with no cursor and no windows of any sort.  Ctrl+Alt+F[1-12] does not work at all.  The system is unresponsive.  I'm not sure whether the system is locking up or if video is just not displaying.
My graphics card is a "Mobility Radeon 9600 M10"
The Xorg doesn't appear to have any errors either.  Here's the log from when Xorg failed:
    http://www.lastholdout.com/foo/xorg/Xorg.fail
Also, here's my xorg.conf file.  I generated it using 'sudo aticonfig --initial':
    http://www.lastholdout.com/foo/xorg/xorg.conf
    Notice that I added:
       Option      "UseInternalAGPGART"         "no"
       Option      "KernelModuleParm"           "agplock=0"
around line 135 for good measure since Arch's Wiki says that those options may help prevent lockups.
I've had this problem at least since 2.6.22.  Back in December, I switched back to the open source ATI driver.  As of late, system performance has been a real drag, and other than this strange behavior, catalyst seems to do a better job.  Is anyone else having this problem?

    Sorry,
I'd pretty much given up on this - I know it sounds strange, but this only affects me at home, when I turn on the laptop at work, it works perfectly every time.  If I try using the work network profile at home it sometimes randomly works.
I did a bit more digging into this, and running a strace produced lots of ioctl messages:
    15692 open("/dev/dri/card0", O_RDWR)    = 10
    15692 write(0, "drmOpenDevice: open result is 10,"..., 39) = 39
    15692 write(0, "drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor retu"..., 40) = 40
    15692 ioctl(10, 0xc03064a6, 0x7fffc8705010) = 0
    15692 ioctl(10, 0xc03064a6, 0x7fffc8705010) = 0
    15692 ioctl(10, 0xc03064a6, 0x7fffc8705010) = 0
    15692 ioctl(10, 0xc03064a6, 0x7fffc8705010) = 0
    15692 ioctl(10, 0xc03064a6, 0x7fffc8705010) = 0
(about 2,000,000 or so before I managed to kill X)
i don't think this is a wireless issue any more, it is more than likely a fglrx problem, but I doubt we will get any luck trying to get support out of ATI, in the meantime I will just end up constantly rebooting my laptop until it decides to work.
BTW I have also seen this happen under Mandriva when network profiles were used, but never got a chance to dig into it very much.
As I type this I am looking at it a bit more closely and I can see that in the same strace I also get:
    15692 open("/dev/dri/card0", O_RDWR)    = 11
    15692 write(0, "drmOpenDevice: open result is 11,"..., 39) = 39
    15692 write(0, "drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor retu"..., 40) = 40
which makes me think that X has opened the DRI device twice and there may be some kind of race condition going on here, at which point I am in way too deep and if there is anyone here with clue, please help.
    Cheers

  • How to How to install ATI Radeon HD2600 driver on bootcamp 3.0 windows 7 partition w/black screen problem

Ok....so i've posted this question in a different way, and i gotten several "scratch the surface" answers from people just saying to install "Ati catalyst", or insert the os x dvd and run set up.exe, and update  to boot camp 3.1 or 3.2...while these all seem like great suggestions, I am finding myself needing more specific direction or "hand holding" so to speak.....here is the MAIN problem...
    The Background/history
I used boot camp (3.0, and i found updates for 3.1 for imac and for windows, but can't find for mac pro, AND they all are ".exe" files which run on windows..which as you'll see is the big part of my problem...So I recently updated my mac pro (with the ATI Radeon HD2600 graphic PCIe card with 10.6.7 from 10.5.8.  I created a single partitioned drive to install windows 7 professional 64 bit.  The download software function didn't work (Thanks, APPLE for that poor level of support) so have to select the option that i have already downloaded, or have other media with the drivers already on it....i restarted with the windows 7 disk in....
The installation of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
So the installation of windows 7 seemed to go flawlessly, was able to use my existing 23" hd apple cinema display (so somehow it has drivers that work with the graphics card, or maybe the motherboard's on board video components) and i select english, and install now, custom, blah, blah, blah...installation causes a few reboots, then restarts ultimately back in os x since that is the default boot os i use on this desk top and have to do the "opt" button to select booting in windows....so when i try restarting in windows, now using the actual boot drive on which i am installing it, it ran through another reboot or two, but then after that, my display goes black....  in the communities, the solution sounds super simple... "go download the ATI catalyst for the black screen problem....windows 7 doesn't have device drivers that work with the ATI radeon hd2600...no problem, just go download and install...."
The problem, re-emphasized :  I cannot even finish the install for windows, because of this driver problem....i cannot see anything....I have tried to reboot in safe mode, and that then seems to invoke whatever basic drivers that do work, likely through the motherboards onboard video vs the actual graphic card, and the screen works and says that it's wanting to complete the installation, so i'm thinking awesome this is gonna work....and then.. "windows installation was not completed and cannot be completed in SAFE MODE, need to restart, blah, blah, blah" pops up...and forces reboot...so Safe Mode allows me to see, but won't allow me to finish the install of windows 7...and without completing the install i can't run (ranther I DONT KNOW HOW TO) any of the various .exe files everyone is telling me are the solutions to my problem...like update 3.1 and 3.2 bootcamp...they're all .exe files?  not sure why, because bootcamp runs in 10.6.7 i thought, but whatever...it needs running Windows to execute...then the ATI radeon hd2600 driver for windows 7 that i downloaded from the site has an installation program that is an .exe file, which needs windows to run...  Does this make sense, why i can't just use these fixes, that seem to be the only fixes out there....so can someone school me step by step here (not just the highlights) of how to update bootcamp, and how to install the ati radeon driver  without having been able to complete the windows 7 installation because the monitor goes and stays black????
This is so very frustrating for the record...and any substantial help "not just go download this..." would be immensely appreciated.
Some other things i've been told to try that i've tried and nothing seems to happen as i'm told it will....
---I've been told to install the osx dvd and run "setup.exe"  - AGAIN...it's an exe file...and 2 - when i put in the os x file it just wants to re install 10.6...so need more help if this is even a real solution to understand how to make it work...
---I've been told to update boot camp to 3.1 and/or 3.2 from 3.0, using Apple Software Update....Well, my software update is saying everything is up to date and there is nothing new to download at all, and when i reverify the bootcamp version it is still only 3.0.2...and again downloading the updates from www.apple.com/support/  for 3.1 and 3.2...all of those are .exe files...need windows to run them...again, refer to the problem described in detail above...
---I've been referred to the black screen on imac early 2011 thread saying it should fix my problem...and reading it it SEEMED like the most promising resolution...it involves creating a boot flash drive for windows 7 and an xml file that sets the imac drivers to auto install during the windows installation..and it got me farther than anything else..but still ultimately ended up in the darned black screen...my assumption is that it's because it's for imac and not mac pro so not ati-radeon specific drivers....ok....that's enough..please...anyone who thinks they can help...your help is desperately needed...thanks so much in advance!

hey Hatter, thanks so much for getting back...so just to be super clear...is there no way to install the drivers using an exe file given my current state? no way to do it with command prompt or something?  if can make work with existing card, i'd prefer it...now when you say it's 'toast' how do you mean?  it works well with the os x partitions and always has...so i'm not sure i follow, just want to be clear...
Now to your point of starting with only the one drive installed...so i would put that bootcamp drive in bay 1 and disconnect the rest...i'm not totally sure what you're suggesting the effect should be of doing this?  just that i'm just installing windows without the bootcamp deal...but if windows 7 doesn't support the ati radeon hd2600, it still will go black screen no? or you're saying it will run video through the motherboard if it's the only bootdrive, and will run all the way through the windows install without trying to switch over to the hd2600?  (slrry flr these questions..just really want to make sure i understand what you're telling me..thanks so much for your patience and help by the way...it's very greatly appreciated...your support is priceless!
So now, assuming none of the above is possible...referring now to the ati 5770 that you referred to...you mention it works with 10.6 well, and that windows 7 supports it ...2 questions on that
         1) Windows 7 supports" meaning, out of the box windows 7 supports it? or will i have to install drivers still through some update, because again, if that's how i have to do it, then won't work, cuz can't start windows to see anything to install any drivers or run any thing at all...so it would have to just work with initial installation.
2)hardware wise for my Mac Pro 3,1...intel dual quad core xeon, blah blah....will this card work? it's a PCIe and should fit on my board no prob, etc?

  • Can't fix fglrx/Xorg black screen issue, no matter what I try!

I've tried everything that I can think of or find online to fix this. Please help.
I'm getting what seems to be an oft-recurring issue where Xorg simply won't start when using the fglrx driver. It boots fine with VESA or Xfree86-ati, but using fglrx I just get a black screen that won't accept any input, although ssh'ing into the box while this is happening still works.
I've been reading forum posts for *days* now trying to get this to work. I've tried every combination of 12.4/12.6 drivers, Xorg 1.11/1.12 and modeset/nomodeset kernel parameters. I definitely do not have any radeon or other DRI modules compiled into my kernel. I have an HD4200, SLiM/Xfce4, and I'm using the proper catalyst-hd234k package. The fglrx module has been compiled for my kernel and added to my initramfs, and it loads at boot. lsmod reveals its presence and does *not* show 'radeon'. I have uninstalled every video driver aside from fglrx and Xfree86-vesa. Output does not seem to be going to HDMI instead. Switching consoles/typing blindly does not work, and I need to hold the power button for 5 seconds to shutdown. I've run aticonfig --initial and tried aticonfig --acpi-services=off, too.
I've tried *all* the different tweaks that I've found to try to make a working xorg.conf, but here's what I'm trying to use now:

fglrxinfo while running Xorg without an xorg.conf gives me this:

And in a console it tells me that it can't open display(null)... all of which I suspect is expected behaviour when the driver is not actually in use. I just wish something would tell me what's actually *wrong*, here, instead of just expecting me to magically figure out exactly the right configuration that will actually let me use fglrx.
I... I just want to be able to play minecraft. :`(

    I'm sure you've tried reading https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57084
    and http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Configuring
    and I'm sure you've done
    aticonfig --initial
I had to use https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AT … leshooting, specifically the part about disabling EXAPixmaps to make my card work.
What model is your ATI card? that would help. A LOT of ATI cards were dropped from proprietary support with the Catalyst driver.

  • Creative Cloud is Black Screen

I just installed creative cloud on my new laptop. Windows 8,1 All I get is a black screen. The blue circle loads for a second but then it's just black see screen shot
I have CC on another pc on same network with no issues I know it's not a firewall issue.
    I have tried to
    reinstall
    adobe cleaner tool
deleting oobe file/ folder in both the app data folder and the common files folder
    rename oobe file/ folder

I had the same problem. HP Zbook 14 with fresh Windows 8.1 Update 1. This laptop has a switchable/hybrid graphics card with Intel HD 4400 and AMD Fire Pro M4100 chipsets. Tried latest drivers from HP as well as from Intel and AMD without sucess. The problem seems to be related to the switching/power management features. As a workaround, setting "Creative Cloud.exe" and "Adobe CEF Helper.exe" to use "Power Saving" graphics settings in the AMD CCC made the application work (no black/black window).
A post in another forum suggested using the modified drivers "Leshcat Catalyst UnifL" from leshcatlabs.net - Keeping it Simple. Ads free. After installing these drivers (Leshcat’s Catalyst 14.12 Omega UnifL) all Adobe applications are working flawlessly!
(Note: Delete any switchable graphics application settings and go with the defaults).
So to summarize this seems like a driver problem rather that an Adobe issue. Before updating I had problems with hardware accelerated gui in Spotify as well (also black screen). This issue was also solved with Leshcat

  • Windows 8 HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx Upgrade results in black screen after intallation finalizes.

I have a 2011 HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx with Windows 7 64 bit Home premium installed.  The notebook/laptop has a AMD Radeon HD 6300M series display adapter with driver version 9.2.2.0 dated 9/27/2012 and an ATI technologies Intel HD Graphics display adapter with driver version 8.7771.1.0.  The notebook/laptop has not had a hardware upgrade and contiains the orignal factory OS. BIOS is current to latest available.
The issue I had while upgrading to Windows 8 is after the install finalizes (settings and preferences are entered) and the system boots to the tiles screen, the display works fine.  Clicking to the desktop works only for a few moments before the screen goes dark. Pressing the power button and/or closing/opening the lid results in at times a black screen (no power to the screen) or black screen (power to the screen) or a black screen where only the mouse pointer is visible and moves around the screen.  Restarting the computer results in a repeat of the issue at times while other times it will boot directly to what appears to be the windows desktop. You can interact with the file folder icon on the task bar as well as internet explorer, and you can get the charms bar and tile screen. Any attempt to open computer management or any control panel or task manager will open the window as an icon on the task bar.  You can mouseover the icon to "preview" a small version of the window but you can not click on it to maximize.
    I attempted the following workarounds:
    1) Clean install of Windows 8: Installs but fails with same result as above
Refresh PC from windows 8 rescue media: Works slightly longer until AMD driver fails and then reverts to situation above.
    2) Uninstalling all display adapters (via computer management) and then upgrading to Windows 8: Results in microsoft drivers getting installed, works much as refresh above until AMD driver fails and then reverts to above situation.
    3) In Scenarios 1 and 2,  I also tried to use windows update within Win8 to update the drivers there are updated MS drivers available ,(dated as late as 10/27/2012) but intalling those drivers also resulted in a failure of the adapter within a short period of time as did NOT updating the drivers.
    4) Disabling display adapters and then restarting:  Results in a BSOD (Blue Screen) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Stop: 0x0000000A error during boot as the OS runs into trouble with the driver before Windows 7 boots.  This happens if one or both drivers are disabled.
    5) Disabling display adapters before in-place upgrade to Windows 8 results in the Windows 8 equivalent of a BSOD and results in the system shutting down and then reverting to Windows 7.
Through research, I determined some ppl had luck connecting another monitor/HD TV through VGA/HDMI and then using the function-screen button to switch, with my system this resulted in the same issue displayed on the TV/Monitor. There are also updates to ATI and Catalyst center available including drivers and installing these do not remedy the issue. Intel was checked and there are no drivers available as HP uses a "custom" driver for intel.  Attempting to install any of these Intel drivers will result in a fail with a compatiblity error.
Windows 8 has no safe mode ability from the windows 8 rescue media disk, you cannot F-8 as you could in the preview. Safe mode must be reached via charms, settings, startup and then selecting safe mode as a boot option, which is not available as the display adapter malfunctions.  In those scenarios where I was able to get a windows desktop to boot up as in the first paragaph I can get to the restart settings via charms, but clicking to bring up the restart menu requires another window to open which is only visible as a "preview" on the windows task bar.
if you are going to attempt to try any of these,
    1) Use a third party software to image your pre-win 8 upgrade system that you can boot into from USB or CD;
    2) Before starting the process, disable the UAC prompt and remove any passwords from logon, as those things will require you to interact with the OS and you will not be able to do this when the adapters fail.  The screen will shadow out as it usually does but the prompt will not be viewable.
    3) Create an ISO image of the Win8 install media and write down the product key. If you are able to get a successful boot, before the drivers fail, create a Windows 8 rescue media disk.
I spoke with HP tech support this morning (10/29/2012) they are aware of the issues and they lie with the display adapters.  They are working toward a solutuion but there are none available at this time and no date when they will be available.  They recommend checking the support website and having the web page autoscan your PC as the drivers will show there when they are posted and they will be installable from Windows 7 so there will be no issue with upgrading to Windows 8.  Bottom line, do not upgrade to Windows 8 at this time.
MS Tech support escalation tier reps also informed me there is no present workaround available.
Hope this helps and saves somebody some time!
    JJ

My laptop sat at BestBuy from Friday night until today (10-31-12)! They couldn't figure out how to fix the problem so I finally told them to revert my latop back to Windows 7! I hope HP reads these and will hurry up and make the updates needed so that I can run Windows 8 on my Laptop! I just bought mine in July of last year there is nothing wrong with it and after dropping about $1200.00 for my dv7-4285dx along with the Best Buy Geek Squad package I do not feel like having to drop more money into another laptop!! PLEASE HURRY AND FIX THIS I DIDN"T DROP $69.99 plus tx to not be able to use Windows 8! Even before I did the upgrade I had the GEEk Squad check to make sure I could make the upgrade and was told this laptop well surpasses the required minium to run Windows 8!!!!!!

  • Latest ATI + Xorg 1.6 + World of Warcraft = black screen

The title sums it up. I've managed to get my 4870 ATI card working with the latest drivers from yaourt (catalyst+catalyst utils, using the drivers released from ATI on the 17th). Since this is a clean install I have the latest kernel and latest xorg, both from the official repository. Everything works fine, normally, including native opengl gaming.
After having installed wine and World of Warcraft I can't seem to make it beyond the login screen, which is completely black. Black screen. Blank screen.
I've attempted to run it in opengl mode through wine AND through the flag 'wine WoW.exe -opengl' and both yield the same black screen.
If I run it as -d3d it'll work just fine if I make sure to uncheck pixelshaders from winecfg, although the fps is terrible, <5fps.
Thoughts on why opengl gives me just a black screen? I remember having to remove libgl before installing catalyst-utils, since it supposedly had it's own libgl built into it.. but I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it. Also, every so often the clinet window won't even open for the opengl mode, finishing with this:

So, I'm up for advise and tips. I've followed every wiki and Config.wtf that I've found. So throw it at me: What logs do you need to see, what ideas do you have, and what information do you need to know?

im bumping this cause im experiencing a very similar issue, with simcity 4, and arch 64.
i have all the 'proper' lib32 libs installed (afaik), and i still get that error. interestingly, i also experience opengl related issues using bin32-zsnes, but they are *very* different (in a nutshell, my whole system hangs when i try to change the resolution of an opengl "mode" to another, compositing enabled or not)..
i think ill read up on that whole chroot method that might be a better alternative .. see if it fixes anything, maybe thats the problem.
such errors about wine and glxbaddrawable errors are all over the internet but nothing is ever mentioned about whether its a 64 bit linux installation using 32 bit wine or not ..

  • MSI Notebook GX640, black screen with games

I own for two years MSI Notebook G series GX640 (Intel Core i5-460M, Ati Mobility RadeonHD 5850, 4GB RAM, 500 GB HDD). Recently I had to send it to the manufacturer because of a audiocard malfunction. It was the last call to do it on the warranty. It ended around a week ago (2 years warranty). The service guy filled an information for me (standard procedure). It stated: repair the audioboard and new ventilation installed. It seems they run some tests and updated the BIOS. After that I had some time (around 2 weeks) of cool work on the machine. Until recently... Here is a description of the problem.
During more demanding programs (games mostly) the PC runes smoothly for some minutes (10, 15, 20 or so) and without warning goes black screen. Sometimes you can still hear the sound from the game other times no. Also if I unplug the power cable and plug it back it sometimes goes to a very uneasy state with stripes on the monitor.
I tried to fix this by updating the CCC from ATI, also updated the video card drivers, today flashed the BIOS using the MSIHQ USB Bootable Tool and BIOS Helper. I used the 1656_031 archive from MSI. Searched the forum and the web for info and help... but no luck. So I post here with hope for help.
I suspect this is not an issue of hardware. If I turn off the PC and start it again works fine, I was also able to upload 2GB of video files to YouTube with no problems at all. As long as I run OS (Windows 7 64bit) or programs like text editors, browsers, video editors, audio editors, internet radio etc. It runes fine. But when I start games it just a no go. To give an example: Mass Effect 3, StarCraft II, Saint's Raw The Third, Borderlands.
My BIOS information; don't know if it will help:
    BIOS version: E1656IMS.10E
    BIOS build:     08/30/2010 15:58:14
    EC version:    1656 EMS1 ver.4.08
    EC build:        06/03/2010

Quote from: Fuzz Ball on 19-February-13, 10:53:50
I could assume (since you've started doing stuff to the bios) that you've done this already, but to make sure, have you checked the usage/temperature of your graphics card?
Actually I didn't do that... till now. For last 4 hours I have been running some games and programs to determine the usage and temperature on the graphics card. Here are the results:
    Temperature in house was 24ᵒC.
While normal Windows 7 running temp. is around 50ᵒ to 54ᵒC
Watching video in 720p from hard drive temp. -> 55ᵒ to 56ᵒC
    Games:
Book of Unwritten Tales (one game that is not going black screen on me), point and click adventure game -> 57ᵒC to 63ᵒC
Starcraft II -> 73ᵒC and black screen (5 to 7 minutes of play)
Mass Effect 3 -> 67ᵒC to 72ᵒC goes black screen
Borderlands -> 72ᵒC to 75ᵒC goes black screen
The Catalyst Control Center (CCC) from Ati I use is 13.1 the GPU is 625 MHz and the Memory of the GPU is 1000MHz. Fan goes around 30%.
Looks normal to me, no 90ᵒC.
Right after I end writing this post and publish it I will try to open the Notebook to at least try find any suspicious things inside. I will probably clean it, but there will be no real hardware intervention. I'm not that good with IT or electronics to try it by myself. So if any just cleaning from dust and a look inside.
P.S. There is one more test I might try tomorrow, run a game on a TV through HDMI to see if the problem will occur if it will that means it's not the display.
    UPDATE:
Seems playing games in window mode might eliminate the problem. All above test's were done if full screen.

  • [Xorg] Black screen with 2nd graphic card

    Hi !
I'm a french (Sorry for my English) and new on ArchLinux.
I have a problem with my laptop, he have 2 graphics cards, the first one is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD4200 series and the second it's an ATI Radeon HD 5650.
The problem is when I want to use the second card,  I have a black screen when I start X. It's the same problem with ATI driver and xf86-video-ati driver even if my card is detected with "lspci" and by "aticonfig --list-adapters" with catalyst driver.
If you need, this is my Xorg log :
    Xorg.log with catalyst
    Xorg.log with free driver
And if you want  my xorg.conf , very basic.
    Thanks for your help.

    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 6#p1133766 FGLRX Configuration
I use one card and found I needed catalyst-dkms pkg as well as catalyst & catalyst-utils
    Hope this helps.

  • Black screen on startup - Radeon graphics driver or EDID issue?

Having installed Arch, I am only able to boot into Linux (console mode) when I pass the option "nomodeset" in GRUB to disable KMS. If I try to boot with KMS enabled then the screen goes black almost immediately upon boot. There appears to be no further activity from the system: I can't even reboot using CTRL-ALT-DEL. Nor is there any log activity that I can find. The system appears to just hang.
My graphics card is a Radeon 9200. From a general websearch, other people have reported a similar issue with this card on other distros, but the "solution" they get is usually "it now works with the updated version of $(DISTRO)". My next move should probably be to try the Catalyst driver, but there's one other thing that suggests to me that the problem is more to do with the monitor (specifically, with the EDID provision) than the driver....
Running "vbeinfo" at the GRUB command line shows the default resolution as 1280x1024x32. When I run "vbetest" at the GRUB command line, I initially get the graphics test pattern displayed correctly. However, when I press enter to end that test pattern I don't return to the GRUB command line. Instead I get a black screen with a blinking white cursor. No input from the keyboard is displayed if I type, but pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot does work from here.
I've looked at the section on the Wiki about Forcing Modes and EDID, but this area's still very much a mystery to me, and the Wiki itself says that this secition is still "a WIP". I guess I'm just wondering if, from the behaviour above, if the problem with using KMS is due to an issue with the graphics card itself or if I should be trying to generate my own custom EDID file, which sounds painful . Passing the built-in resolution 1280x1024 via the drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware option, as suggested on the Wiki, made no difference in behaviour at all. Trying to pass 1024x768 in the same way did make snowy artefacts appear on the monitor, but didn't get me to a point where the system appeared any closer to actually booting up.
Any advice would be appreciated. I've currently got the X running fine using the VESA driver (no custom Xorg.conf file needed), but it's more than a little slow. I'd like to have 2D acceleration available at the very least.

If its a laptop, your screen brightness might be getting set to 0 on boot. If so, try attaching an external monitor to test the theory and set the brightness from a terminal.
    export DISPLAY=:0
    xbacklight -set 100
Unfortunately it's a desktop with a flat-screen monitor; VGA cable connection. The only information on model that I have is from the monitors' configuration menu:  "Dell E248WFP".
More detail on the graphics card: "lspci|grep VGA" gives "01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (rev 01)"

  • Black screen on startx with ati radeon HD4330 Mobility and fglrx

    Hi,
I managed to install Archlinux on my HP Butterfly laptop that's great !
However I am not able to get X running properly.
    lspci|grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M92 LP [Mobility Radeon HD 4300 Series]
Firstly I tried to use the xf86-video-ati open source driver but it made my kernel crash during the module init.
So I am now trying fglrx, and at least my kernel is unharmed.
But all I get is a black screen after running startx.
Here is my X log :
