Cause and effect in iPhoto

What would cause my photo library of several thousand images to suddenly go blank and become an unrecognizable format? When I highlight a blank "place-saver", the information block says it is a JPEG Image. I have several other libraries which have not gone blank. when I open them and highlight an image, the information block says it is a JPEG Image also. What would make the blank images produce a message that says "unrecognizable format" when in fact it is the same as images which did not go blank (JPEG image)? Please help me. I need the images.
Thanks

If when I put the curser to anyone of the dotted squares it identifies the photo by number, by date, by time, by format and by size, how does that happen if the images are not anywhere?
iPhoto is a database. What you're seeing there are the entries in the iPhoto database that correspond to the photos.
WHy do you assume that these drives are backing up your photos? Just plugging the the disks won't make a back up. Something is copying the Library to these disks.
File Recovery software - such as File Salvage- will scan the disks for recoverable files. Actual recovery requires a purchase.

  • SSM Cause and Effect diagram

    Hi
I have question about Cause and Effect diagram setup in SSM10.
Is it possible to set up cause and effect relationships only between objectives in "objectives" level?
I added two more levels to Scorecard and I can setup C&E diagram only to second scorecard hirerarhy level (Objective).
    For example:
    Level 1 -  Perspective
Level 2 - Objective <<<<< C&E digaram only covers this level?
Level 3 - Custom Objective level
Level 4 - Custom Objective level
            Level 5 - KPI
    Am I understanding correctly?
    Toomas

    Toomas,
You are correct. No matter how many levels you create for your hierarchy, cause and effect will only work with Objectives.

  • Cause and effect map, zoom = "fit to page" - default option

when opening cause and effect map, the default zoom option is : zoom = 100%.
how can I change the default to be : zoom = fit to page ?

    Sorry no workaround as yet...
I too am now sick of the amount of expensive paper I have wasted due to the Preview app default print setting of 'Scale to fit'.
    - No option to print at 100%, you have to manually input this information.
    - No way to change this default in preferences, you can change the opening viewing size of a doc to 100% though.
    - Doesn't remember the previous settings if you decide to reopen the doc and print another copy.
I also found that if I attempted to print an A4 doc with bleed and crop marks, it would set the default paper size to A4 and the annoying scale to fit would be set to 83%. If I then changed the scale by typing in 100% but don't hit enter for fear of the print starting and then simply use the drop down to change the paper to A3 and then change the orientation and then hit enter it ignores that you have changed the scale and prints your doc at 83% on A3 - Brilliant!
It's a shame to say that I will be going back to acrobat for pdfs!
If you can't put a 100% scale radio button on the print dialogue box either allow people to change the default in prefs or even better allow the presets to control paper size and scale of printing!

  • Can too large a folder cause issues and effect performace of my Mac Pro

Hi, I have a 180 gb folder filled with important data within my Home folder. This folder has a many subfolders as well. The folder is on my startup drive and where I have Snow Leopard installed. Can too large a folder cause issues with my mac and effect performance? Thanks

another way to ask, would you make better use of, and improve I/O and performance, if you used your other drive bays? yes.
Boot drives with even less than 50% free is probably not a good idea. All depends on whether 200GB is on 1TB or on 500GB drive. And how fragmented free space even.
Lifting, loading and writing or copying 4GB files of course does have an impact, so if you work with 2GB files in CS5....
Having a dedicated type boot drive, media drive (and isolate media and library files) as well as scratch drive is normally done with Mac Pro.
The biggest bang in performance: lean mean SSD boot drive.

  • Where and how does iPhoto store photos?

I have iPhoto 2009 and tens of gigabytes of photos, maybe 10,000 in all.
Currently, I have been dumping these photos into my Pictures folder, then importing them into iPhoto. My questions are:
    1) What's getting stored, and where?
    2) Is this the best strategy?
    3) What about duplicates? Do I just delete them from my iPhoto library, and leave them in my Picture folder? For example, I have hundreds of shots that I created as both RAW and JPEG. That's what I want to keep on disk, but I don't need duplicates in iPhoto.
    4) How do I go about organizing my photos? Should I have a maximum number of photos in a given folder? And how should I organize all this in iPhoto?
I know these seem like stupid questions. I'm not a stupid user; I have 25 years of experience. I'm just looking for best practice suggestions and a deeper understanding of what is stored and where, and where I will hit performance problems.

the pictures in my Pictures folder have been copied into iPhoto, (into an enormous invisible folder somewhere)
    Nothing enormous or invisible.
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to look inside? Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
How the files are stored: You have three core folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
    See? No secrets.
I can be confident that they'll be backed up with Time Machine,
Yes, or any other Back Upmutility you choose
and they will remain in their original format (unless I edit within iPhoto),
Yes, as you can see from your look inside iPhoto
and, if I later choose a different photo management program, photos in the iPhoto library are still discrete files that I can copy using the Finder?
Yes, though the more correct way would be to export via iPhoto. Why? Because this will allow you to write any metadata you add in iPhoto to the files.

  • Styles and Effects Effects

In the Styles and Effects palette, under Layer Effects, we seem to have lost
    the WOW NEON styles.
Short of a reinstall, does anyone have any suggestions how to get these Wow
    Neon effects back?
    Dave

I am going to hijack Beth Haney's answer to another question as she explained it so well, but I do want to credit her.
You don't say what platform you're using, so I'll give the instructions for both.
With Elements closed, click on the start up icon then make a QUICK grab for (Windows) Control, Alt, and Shift keys or (Mac) Command, Option, and Shift keys. Hold all three down until you get a screen asking if you want to delete Settings. Say Yes. If you don't get that screen, you didn't get the keys depressed fast enough, so keep trying. A new Preference folder will build as Elements continues to launch.
Since this is "new" behavior for an installation that's been working properly for a long time, it's possible that folder became corrupted. That's pretty common and can cause all kinds of mysterious things to happen. If this doesn't correct the problem, repost and add information about the kind of system you're using.

  • How does the crop-lock and "Effect" settings logic work?

The crop lock and Effect setting have in common the fact that they are unpredictable with a strange logic I have yet to figure out. Questions:
What decision process causes the crop lock to remain locked, and then suddenly decide to stay open from one use to the next  (Or the reverse).?
What makes the "Effects" decide to retain its last used settings, and sometimes not?  (Usually the last customized setting is NOT what I want for the next photo in line to be edited).
    Thanks!

    Thank you for the reply!
    richardplondon wrote:
There is no distinction betwen edited and un-edited. And the tools and controls do not have any defaults of their own aside from what the images possess. You can't put the crop tool on 3:2 and then move from image to image clicking "apply"; this is simply not how the LR interface works.
Understood, except that these settings are an exception.  The effects settings will be stuck in the last positions they where on before you created the edit button.  See attached photo for what I mean by edit buttons and associated settings.  This also applies to graduated filters.
This is difficult to describe.   I think I've figured out the logic but cant understand why anyone would want it to work this way:   If I choose a setting *before* making the first mark (i.e. new button) with the tool, those settings will persist forever until I change them (even if I change catalogs).  If I change the settings AFTER applying the tool, they are forgotten even if I want to keep them.  I never want a custom setting to persist into the next photo because the last tool/setting I used will not likely be the first tool used in the next photo.
And just to be clear, the effects I'm referring to are on the right. The timing of WHEN you adjust those settings determines whether or not they persist in what I consider an undesirable way.  In other words, in order to avoid messing up the presets, I must always start the tool before adjusting the effects. That is the only way to keep them from persisting into the next tool/button operation.

  • I have installed iphoto 9.5.1 and now my iphoto library is locked and it says I don't have permission to fix it. anybody  have this same issue

I have installed iphoto 9.5.1 and now my iphoto library is locked, anybody have a fix for this?

Have you tried to restart the system? Sometimes this is caused by a running application blocking the access.
If that does not help, look for a lock file in the iPhoto library package as described here by Terence Devlin:
Re: The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it. iPhoto can try to repair the permissions.

  • Multiple tracks and effects not bouncing to mp3???

    Hello,
This might be a tough problem to diagnose due to the many possibilities as to what might be causing this...
I have multiple tracks and effects missing on a project [32 tracks] after bouncing to mp3. This has never happened to me before and I've been running Logic consistently for about a year now. I've tried bouncing the same project about five times now and there doesn't seem to be any consistency with regards to which tracks and effects go missing.
I do not have any of the tracks or effects that are missing after bouncing muted and nothing in the project is soloed. No problems with automation prior to bouncing either.
    Please help.
    Thanks.

Just tried it and got the infamous "System Overload"!!
Any suggestions to get around this? I already froze my tracks. Btw, only working with 4 GB's of RAM...could that be the problem?
    Thanks.
Which is why you're missing tracks... too many plugins, are you using Reverbs and Delays on a bus where possible? RAM could be a problem but the fact is you're over-taxing your system. It could be virtual instruments, it could be not being able to pull data off a drive fast enough... it could be using too many Reverbs as inserts when using one on a bus for several tracks would be more economical.
Try giving your system more time to work.
Increase the I/O Buffer to 512 or 1024...... try the Process Buffer at Large

  • Duplicates and preview vs. iphoto

when i try to import my pictures from my camera. I can only do i through iphoto.
im really wondering what's the deference between iphoto and just putting in a folder and using the preview to open things. i noticed that iphoto creates a smaller copy of the picture (if you search in the "all images" folder). which i think its rediculous cuz it just wastes space. i found out how to delete the copies but its a pain. any way of importing without creating that copy. or without using iphoto?

Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
iPhoto is a photo management SQL database system that is very powerful and gives you many search and editing capabilities - if you think it is "rediculous cuz it just wastes space." then you should not be using it - and you certainly do not understand it.
To stop using iphoto launch iPhoto and in the iPhoto menu go to preferences and set the preference for "when a camera is connected:" to do nothing or to open image capture - which ever you prefer.
With image capture you can download photos and do what you want with them - or if you choose do nothng and your camera will mount ot the desktop as a removable disk you can just move your photos from the camera to where ever you want and do what ever you want with them
Not that since iPhoto is a database it is very important that you do not modify the iPhoto library in any way at any time via the finder - doing so will corrupt your iPhoto library and cause youto lose data

  • Replicate Picasa's glow effect in iPhoto or Aperture?

I've been using Picasa when I'm traveling with a PC. One really nice feature on Picasa is the glow effect. It adds a dream-world like effect to photos.
Is there a way to replicate this effect in iPhoto or Aperture? Any sort of plugin?
    Thanks.
    MBP C2D 2.16 | 2Gb | 160Gb   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I see some slight blurring similar to a Gaussian blur and maybe a slight shift in the levels towards the 0/white side as viewed in Photoshop. You can work on the sharpness in the Adjust pane using the sharpness slider. A little shift in temperature seemed to bring the unglowed photo close to the glowed version. But there's no single effect to do the entire job at once.

  • Replacing material while keeping old cuts and effects

I went through the entire process of capturing, editing, and authoring video with Premiere Pro CS4 only to realize that the first half of my hour-long project was captured with the wrong aspect ratio. The aspect ratio of the footage is 16:9, whereas the capture settings were set for 4:3. The discrepancy causes flickering and other unwanted effects to the video, but I'm not compelled to redo the entire business with all the cuts and effects that I so carefully worked on. Is there a way to recapture the footage off the DV tape, this time with the correct aspect ratio, and to import it to the project so that it would replace the respective, pre-existing while keeping all the editing decisions of the old footage intact?
Thanks a million for any help!

Just make a new sequence with the right aspect ratio.
