CD-RW is marked 'read only' by hard disk utility

I want to scratch the contents of a CD-RW or DVD-RW using tht hard disk utility. But this is impossible, the software indicates 'read only'. Even for a new CD the utility says 'read only'. But in the finder the information for the CD is 'read and write'.
What can be the reason? A specific parameter that I by accident set? Or a hardware problem?

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type dvd or cd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in *Disk Utility.* Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

  • ITunes Keeps Freezing, Music Folders Keep Being Marked Read-Only???  HELP!!

Recently I have been completely unable to access my iTunes for more than 15 seconds before it freezes up and I have to end the program. When I checked the properties for my My Music folder and my iTunes Music folder (and all the folders within these folders), I noticed that the Read-Only box is marked - not checked, but filled with another, smaller box.
When I uncheck the read-only box on all the folders and go back up to the My Music folder, I check the properties and notice that it is STILL marked as Read-Only. This is driving me completely insane, as I can do NOTHING with my iTunes without it freezing. Can someone please help me out???

It's normal for folders to be marked read only, what ever your problem is, it is not this.

  • Why can't iTunes play music from read-only external hard drive?

I have a write-protected external hard-drive which I keep all of my iTunes media on. iTunes recognizes all of the files, including the metadata on the id3 tags, and can find the files in Windows Explorer. However, it cannot play the files while the drive remains write-protected. Is there a work around for this as I would prefer to keep the hard-drive protected? Why does iTunes require write-access to play songs? Other media players have no problem playing from my read-only external hard-drive. Thanks for any help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
When you say you can't play through both devices at the same time, what happens when you try, are you able to select multiple speakers, do they deselect themselves, do you not get the option or does it just not work when you select multiple speakers.

  • How to Mark Read Only Checkboxes based on RadioButton Selections

I've spent the past hour looking through old discussions and can't find anything about this, so maybe it will help some others in the future as well.
I'm building a Dynamic PDF for people at work to use for troubleshooting.  It basically follows the same logic as the flowcharts I've already made, but by asking questions and telling the technicians what to do based on their answers.  At the top I have checkboxes that are kind of "top level questions" that I want to be read only and I want them to check off automatically as they make their way through the radio buttons.
My end goal is to incorporate this PDF into our ticketing system and the checkboxes at the top level will show the troubleshooting that has already been completed without the technician having to read through the entire PDF to find out what to do next.  If we have to send a technician to the site to repair anything it will also act as an escalation report, so he knows where we were able to get without him being on site.
I was thinking this might work, but apparently I don't understand the coding as well as I thought I did.  Hopefully I'm close lol.
    if (TestRadio.rawValue==1){
    Subform1.Check1.rawValue=1;
    else{
    Subform1.Check1.rawValue=0;
Any help is greatly appreciated.  If anyone has a PDF with an example of this working I'd love to see it.  Thanks a lot.

Actually, I just figured it out.  I was missing " " around the values.  Maybe this will still help someone else, so I'll leave it up.  Thanks all!

  • My Imac won't read an external hard disk. No icon in the finder. It's visible in the disk uitility. NTSF format

    Hi!
Every time I connect my hard disk, I get this message:
The hard disk is in NTFS format.
So far I've connected  3 different hard disks, and I always get the same message. I also have a mac laptop and I can see all of them in the finder and read and save stuf in them, too.
I've contacted Apple support and they've told me it's a problem from the hard disk and I should format it into the Exfat Format, and see if it works and the imac can read it.
I don't really want to delete all the stuff I have in the hard disk.
How can I find out if there's a problem with the computer or if it is a problem with the hard disk? Is there an app I can use that might help? Shall I format it into Exfat?
I'd be grateful if anybody can help,
    Thanks!!!

    Then you haven't removed it.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to reboot in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, the uninstallation may have no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • VM auto start in a single server pool with only local hard disk repository

I searched the forum but can't find anything similar.
Basically, part of the dev environment I have is just starting to use Oracle VM to have a nice centralized place to manage the VMs and managed server.
Those environment doesn't have shared storage and all VMs are stored under local hard disk. (as just having several VMs to share the resource in a single server)
So there is only one server in the server pool.
What should be the best way to set up VM auto-start when this single server is rebooting or start from boot up?
    Should I just set up a symlink of /OVS/running_pool/vm1/vm.cfg to /etc/xen/auto/vm1.cfg ?
(p.s. I can't set up HA mode in the single server pool since this is ocfs2.local, it will fail)
    Thx in advance.

After some testing, I'm now using a traditional way (for single server with local repository)
auto start VM in dom0 during server starts up:
    ln -s /OVS/running_pool/vmname/vm.cfg /etc/xen/auto/vmname
auto shutdown VM in dom0 during server shut down:
    - edit /etc/sysconfig/xendomains
    change the line:
    XENDOMAINS_SAVE=/var/lib/xen/save
    to
    XENDOMAINS_SAVE=
I also change XENDOMAINS_RESTORE from true to false
Now when I need to reboot/power down the server via OVM, I can just go ahead and do it without migrating..and xendomains will shutdown all my VMs and start them up next time.

Disk Utility in Applications > Utilities

  • My Late 2013 iMac with Yosemite 10.10.2 randomly shuts down and displays a grey screen with a flashing question mark folder. According to Disk Utility, my drive is OK. What should I do?

I've had this problem for a while and I thought it went away. I've looked at all of the other discussions and tried what they suggest, nothing. I preferably don't want to erase everything on here. Is there a way to fix it without having to do that? I also noticed that other people have the screen when they first boot their computer. Mine are in the middle of a college essay or browsing online. I would really like to fix this issue. I haven't even had my iMac for a year yet. Any suggestions?

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
    a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
    b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
    c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
    d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Mac-formatted external HD only access with Disk Utility

    Hello!
I read a lot about problems with Mavericks and WD harddrives. But i did not found anything about my problem:
    - bought a new HD and formatted with Disk Utility
    - copied all important data to it, all fine
    - next day for my surprise i couldn´t see this HD in Finder
    - looked in Disk Utility and the HD is there
    - if i click on the drive and "open" then i can see it in finder and have access to all data, but if i click on "reveal in finder" i can´t see it!
    - i started CarbonCopyCloner and did a complete backup to a new second backup HD, CCC recognized the HD and everything worked fine
    - now the backup HD has the same problem, i can see it only in Disk Utility
    - it seems that the error moved from one drive to the other, so my guess is it has nothing to do with brands or a hardware failure
    - i´m searching now for hours but i don´t find a solution
    - i now have one (very important) data HD and a backup HD as a clone with the same problem
    - all other HD´s i have are showing correctly in finder!
    Does anyone have any ideas?

After hours of searching this is the solution:
    Open Terminal, then
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    killall Finder
sudo chflags nohidden /Volumes/"Name Of Drive"
    killall Finder
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
    killall Finder

  • Burned DVDs won't mount/read but seen by Disk Utility as containing data

    Hi,
I've got a problem. I have about 200 burned DVDs which were created using my LG VHS/DVD recorder/player. I have used these same DVDs to burn from my external LaCie DVD buner with my PPC G5 running Tiger and my LG Blu-Ray burning with my MacBook running Leopard and those burns plays fine on all 3 devices. However, neither the LaCie DVD burner nor the LG Blu-Ray burner seem able to read/mount the DVDs created with the LG VHS/DVD recorder/player although the G5 and the MacBook, both using Disk Utility, can see that there is data and the size of it on each disk. I am also unable to create a disk image for some reason as it begins but halts saying there's an I/O error. I need to get the content of these disks onto Hard Drives to rip and encode. How do I get the computers to mount these disks which they clearly see are not blank?
    Thank you

    Try opening them with mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you may also need the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
You should be able to convert them to mpeg2 which is the standard format of a video DVD.

  • Cannot read hybrid ISOs in Disk Utility

I'm trying to burn Ubuntu 13.04 and Mint 15 to a DVD in Disk Utility but the images I've downloaded are not mountable.  Apparently this is because "Hybrid" images are all the rage now, which facilitate creating a bootable USB stick, or something.  I have a particular need to burn these images to DVD.
I've Googled for solutions, and found a recommendation to run the "dd" command to extract the relevant partition from the image, but this has not worked, e.g.
    1. Open the image in Disk Utility and note the disk address (e.g. disk3s1)
    2.  Run dd if=/dev/disk3s1 of=./ubuntu-13.04-desktop-amd64-extracted.iso bs=1m
    3.  Open up the new image and it should be readable
My problem is that the disk address in Disk Utility is always diskNs2, i.e. slice 2 rather than 1.  If I run dd on slice 1, I get a 4096Kb image, if I run it against slice 2, I get a 2.2M image.  Both are obviously nowhere near the 800MB image I'm expecting to get.
Can anyone suggest a workaround, besides booting up into Windows/Linux and trying there?

An Audio CD is likely a CD-R disk, as older players may not handle the CD-RW format. In this case, the disk cannot be reformatted once it has had data written to it, and you will need a new disk to burn your playlist.
