Hi Apple Community,
I'm wondering whether programmers at Apple read these posts. This is more of a suggestion than a discussion.
I am currently making a huge spreadsheet for my nano brewery business where I am creating Balance Sheets, P&L Statements, Cash Flow Statements, etc. Basically a financial model. I believe the spreadsheet is currently larger then the business itself in terms of value and scale.
The spreadsheet is set to a monthly cycle and the expenses are all tabbed out to other pages. This way I can enter daily expenses in a tab titled "Hops purchases" and it accumulates with the total appearing in the appropriate cell for "May" Hops expenses in the master sheet.
I would love to be able to then add a link to the "May Hops" cell in the master sheet so that whenever I want to add an expense I just click on the cell and it takes me directly to the "Hops Purchases" page.
Excel has this option.
Now that I've put in that jab, I want to say a quick couple of things.
I hope the programmers at apple can fix this. I suspect that it will eventually make me annoyed enough to buy the Excel program because it is just more useful even for my rather unadvanced financial layout. While it's big, it's not super complicated.
Please don't tell me I can just move my mouse arrow up to the tabs and slide along them. I know this. It still takes longer than clicking on a linked cell.
And please don't tell me I can buy a pre-made financial model of some sort that has a workaround. I like what I'm doing. I'm a creative guy. Apple products are supposed to be for creative, independent people.
I love this new Mac I bought and I like how intuitive the Numbers program in general is. It was very easy to use and I rarely ran into serious issues that ate up hours of my time. That's key, because it is a unique talent I posess.
But please fix this. I've heard that Apple is not very forthcoming about admitting mistakes and doesn't always bother to address issues when consumers raise them. Prove the public wrong, please. You don't need to reply to this missive, I'm really just venting (Unless the internet is incorrect and there IS a way to create a link in a cell so that it takes me to another tab). Just fix it. Please, Please, Pretty-Please.

Meanwhile, if don't want to wait for Apple to build in this functionality, you can quite easily add something similar yourself.
For example, you can have something like this pop up whenever you hit a keyboard shortcut (in my case shift-command-j):
This is done via a Jump to Sheet Automator Service (Dropbox download). To install just doubleclick the .workflow package and (if needed) click 'Download Anyway' in System Preferences > Privacy & Security.
This will cause a new item to appear in your Numbers > Services menu. Then, if you want a keyboard shortcut, go here in System Preferences and add one:
You can rename or remove the service by holding down the option key in Finder and choosing Go > Library > Services. You can also view the AppleScript contaned within the service by opening the .workflow package in Automator.
This particular service jumps to the first cell of the first table of the sheet you choose from an automatically generated list of all sheets in the current document. That is precise enough for most purposes, though it is not hard, using simple AppleScripts, to "jump" to any cell in the current document, to cells in other Numbers documents, or even to non-Numbers files on your Mac.

Dacf; gridcontrol cell; put edits

To put all those discussion into a practical example and question...
I have a dacf grid control. The user can edit a part number ( 1 of 350,000 possible.. no list boxes ) that is one of the columns. I want to make sure that part number is valid via a lookup in the database..immediately on entry into the cell and pressing tab and return... if bad, I want to blank the cell and leave him/her in it.. and put an error message (NOT a error dialog) at the bottom of the screen in the status line.
How does one go about this?
Some options I see:
1. If I were a Java pro.. probably do something with a custom cell editor attached to the underlying tablemodel?
2. If I were a beginning BC4J person.. maybe put it in the EO setr with a exception event handler that somehow does the work. ( HOW? Where? I'm missing the conceptual links to accomplish this task... or comprehensive yet simple code examples)
3. If I were a little more involved with BC4J.. set up a DOMAIN with the the validation, set up the EO attribute on the domain... and follow through with 2 above???
4. If I were a traditional Oracle developer with little Java experience. Uh. Well, I'm fairly lost until I've had about 6 months of experience, 5 training classes.. read through several Java manuals, read more class docs than I cared to... and disjoint Help pages ( making the linkages myself ).
This is a very simple, common and necessary task in any UI... validating the entered value in a dacf gridcontrol cell at time of entry.
What is the BEST way to approach this? Does anyone have code examples?

I will try to implement a domain, an EO attribute on the domain, and your rowsetInfo (?) attributeInfo validationListener to see if I can make it hang together and work.
grin We're getting to the crux of a lot of the issues I have!
I suppose I missed this concept completely in the classes ( I heard and can find the pieces, but not how to use them to create a total end to end solution )... AND missed it completely in the documentation as an end to end solution? ( Show a person a clutch, a brake pad, a piston rod and a gallon of gas... it doesn't mean they know how to build a car from scratch! )
But my belief is that just about everyone outside of Oracle and those having direct contact with Oracle, or discovering this through this board... well... they are just floundering when they need the solution.
And really, I'd want most of my validation back at the DOMAIN level ( since it something like an SSN format check, or a valid part number check... is related to the DOMAIN..and global to everything, even supra-application module? I.E. Rule 1: protect database data integrity. ) to be picked up by the EO, and used by the the component, right? And all of this will happen at data entry, not commit, of course ( unless as Steve says, there are cross-attribute within the same row or rowset constraints )
Confusion ( on my part? ) is that if I put a ValidationListener on the attributeInfo that is it at the "wrong level" ( way, way up the food chain ), again? Or will this cleanly trap rules placed in the EOImpl setr.. and the Domain rules, as well, at time of entry?
Yet you are correct in that if I don't want some generic ERROR dialog box to pop up... I'd need something like the ValidationListener to "take control" and do what I want... is that correct?
Also, the validation Listener fires even when I'm setting the value programmatically directly from another table's value... even if I know for sure that the value is valid?
( Remember that I may be checking in a before insert trigger anyway since I'm protecting data integrity no matter what the source ).
One of the interesting effects I'm encountering in building the App is items like this... that EventListeners Fire seem to fire indiscriminatly... and I have to code the critter REAL careful to put in global flags or prechecks to tell it "NO, don't do it" so as to keep up the response time... and also that the Listener would need special code and custom properties on the UI component set up ( like "allow wildcard" ) that will affect the listener validation code.... uh... which in a generic listener requires more and more specialized exception code.
I.E. generic is starting to == slow and cumbersome and hard to set up, specialized == fast and efficient and easy to code and debug. This would not matter ( generic and slow is MSFT's design approach in most cases ) if not for the fact that actual user response time is a reality, and the JVM running on a <800mhz cpu with lots of databse access really does start to bog down.

SSAS SSRS Report Action on Cell Value w/ Embedded Single Quote Not Executing

I have configured an SSAS 2008 R2 cube SSRS ReportAction. I'm having problems when the member value for a cell has an embedded single quote, e.g. abc's. The action displays on the context menu appropriately, but when I click on the action, nothing happens.
For member values that do not have the single quote, the action works as designed. I've added a calculated ember to escape the embedded single quote by adding another single quote, e.g. abc''s, with no luck. Is there a resolution or workaround for this?

According to your description, you create a reporting action in you cube, and it works fine except the members that have embedded single quote, right? In your scenario, it seems that you pass this value to the report as the parameter.
In SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), when pass values to a report, multi-select parameters have to be placed into IN statement and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) will do single-quote wrapping for string values automatically. In this case, the original
value that have embedded single quote will be damaged. So this action not work. You can submit a feedback at
http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/Feedback and hope it is resolved in the next release of service pack or product.

Macro to open and save as a value in a cell

How can I create a macro (I've named it Test) that will:
1.bring up the open dialogue box (to allow the user to choose a file)
2.save the file, with the file name determined by the text in cell A3 in .xlsx format
I have two pieces code that seem to work individually, but not together:

Is there any way to contact Verizon with a detailed cell phone technical support question? I prefer e-mail so as to provide details (like I am trying to provide here). I have tried in-store personnel (no help at all) and the web chat - they just want to see me more data instead of helping me with my basic problem!
I CAN NOT GET ANYONE FROM VERIZON TO GIVE ME ANY HELP NOR CAN I FIND A WAY TO FILE A COMPLAINT. AT THIS POINT I JUST WANT TO DROP MY VERIZON ACCOUNT BUT I'M SURE THAT IT WILL COST ME A SMALL FORTUNE TO GET OUT OF IT.

So last night my RAZR MAXX HD did something totally bewildering by spontaneously downloading 2.6 GB of data over the course of ~ 3 hours. Fortunately I was able to catch this problem before it ended up being really expensive, but I still exceeded my 2 GB data plan by 600MB.
The Culprits:
Reddit News Free: 160 MB foreground / 0.96 GB background
Android OS: 0 MB foreground / 1.18 GB background
Several unnamed applications: ~ 350 MB

5:12 PM: Incident begins according to VZW data usage website (2.60410 GB used). This is around the last time that I used my phone at the laundromat before getting dinner and watching Game of Thrones.
8:04 PM: 50% of data allowance used (txt msg)
8:31 PM: 75% of data allowance used (txt msg)
8:58 PM: 90% of data allowance used (txt msg)
9:13 PM: 100% of data allowance used (txt msg)
10:05 PM: Got the text messages and immediately put the phone into airplane mode
10:30 PM: Took screenshots
10:45 PM: Enabled wifi, installed Kaspersky premium. Scan returned no threats.
11:00 PM: Left phone in airplane mode, went to sleep.
The questions:
What was the root cause of this issue? Did Reddit News freak out as a result of an esoteric bug or was my phone hacked?
If this was a simple Reddit News bug, then why was the Android OS also trying to use such a massive amount of background data?
What the hell are these unnamed numeric applications? I've inspected my process history and this is the first time they have ever attempted to use data.
I'm pretty sure that I can explain this situation to Verizon and get out of having to pay additional data usage fees, but I would like to know more about the problem before I get in touch with them.

All I can think is your phone may have background downloaded an OTA update, and you'd then be prompted with something like, "As update to your Android system has been downloaded, would you like to install it now?"
I do find it very odd that the update would be 2.6GB. As a rough base, the CyanogenMod 10.1 firmware for your device is well under 200MB, so unless Verizon has a ****-ton of bloatware in the update, or it had to attempt to download multiple times for some reason, it may be a stretch.
But doing a little homework, it looks like the Verizon Razr Maxx was updated to 4.1 in late March. Maybe they're still rolling it out in waves? Have you gotten the update yet?
Edit: Aaaand I just noticed you appear to be running an AOSP-based ROM, which totally rules out a carrier update being sent out.
Edit2: If you want to live dangerously, you could try running:
#kill -9 12289
That 12289 is the PID listed in your screenshot. But don't run that without fulling understanding the kill command.
The ps command could also be of use, but probably not.

I can confirm that the phone is currently at 4.1.2 and that I wasn't prompted for an OTA update.The fact that both the Android OS and Reddit News processes were simultaneously using an extremely large amount of data is unlikely to be a coincidence...

That is very curious that the spikes happened at the same time.I'm curious. It may have put at least some of that 2.6GB somewhere. You could use a data visualizer tool to see if you can find it, which may lead to more clues.

The largest directories are:
DCIM: Normal looking photos (90,825 KB)
Android: Primarily map cache data (64,846 KB)
If it was downloading content then it did not significantly save content to storage. It's not like I have anything particularly sensitive on the phone, but the idea that it was uploading a snapshot of my data definitely makes me uncomfortable.

Yup, Digital Camera IMages and videos.Somewhere in /sdcard/Android would be my guess as to where a mysterious file would be downloaded, but if it's only 64MB, and mostly map data, I'd safely rule it out.I'm sorry, but I'm stumped here.Edit: I should mention I don't think this is malware, because unless a malicious app gained superuser access, any data it used would show under it's own apk in the data usage list, not Android OS.

Although I'm not really up to speed with the Android platform, I come from a UNIX background so I feel comfortable running commands. How do I pull up a bash terminal? Do I need to root the phone first?

There's a number of terminal emulators in the Play Store that work well. You don't need a rooted phone to get to the shell as your user, but any privileged command won't execute unless you can grant it permission from the Superuser app that is installed when you root the device. So you could probably do a ps -e, but not a kill -9.

Got it. I downloaded a terminal emulator but unfortunately those processes no longer exist.Does Android keep a generic log of system level events like /var/log/syslog?

I don't think so, and I know you'd need superuser permission to read most of the files in /var/log anyway. I'm not super familiar with how Android does its logging, but I do know that the two files of interest are the logcat and dmesg.

Want to mention here that using your settings to set your data cap (set it on your billing day), then you won't go over again.Those text messages are really unhelpful, as they send out well after the data has been used. Chances are good you hit close to the 2GB mark before you received the bulk of the messages.

That's definitely not the case here; both my PC and and Android phone are free from pirated apps.

You used the data. Verizon can not see what it was sued for. However your phone can see whats apps used the data. go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle. line the dates up with your cycle. then there will be a bar graph below that extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right. after those are extended below that will be a list of apps, there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

I'm trying to add multiple lines (in the form of a list) in a individual cell in Excel for MAC. I used ALT Enter on my PC but that doesn't work on the iMac. Does anyone know how to do this?

It's been a while but I think you hold SHIFT while typing a page break (RETURN) to make a new line without shifting to another cell.
However, as Excel isn't an Apple product, I am sure you will get a faster and more current answer by using Microsoft's Office:Mac forums here:

Concatenation of Data from 4 infoobjects into a single cell in Bex Report

I have loaded ODS with the description data. The source system for loading the ODS is the flat file. The ODS data should be a replica of the flat file.
In the flat file, there is a description field corresponding to a particular ID. This Description is greater than the standard 60 char length. So, I had to split the description while loading the flat file using single line routine in the Transfer Structure.
So, while loading different the data, I split the description field data from the flat file into 4 infoobjects and the flat file data was loaded into the ODS.
Now, from the reporting point of view, I need to display the entire description data from the 4 info-objects into a single cell in the Bex report.
Please suggest a solution for this.

How to disable a single cell in a table (and not the whole column)

I've got a webdynpro table with a few columns, rows can be created dynamically through a button in the table toolbar.
Depending on the value of a certain cell I have to disable another cell (in the same row).
I tried to manipulate the view in the modifyview but no joy. I also tried to manipulate the attribute property through the coding below:

but it disables the whole column!!!! I just need the cell to be disabled (I thought the code above, through the lead selection, would affect a certain cell only - but I was wrong).

Instead of binding the read only property of table as a whole , just bind the read only property of column group of table., You can do this bu drill down the table and select the required column and bind the read only column.,
then In onAction Event of button .,
loop the table, if condition satisfied set the read only property to true else false.,!!

Cell border selection problem

I have a spreadsheet that is a week at a glance schedule for a dance school. There are three columns per day, each representing a different studio location. Each row represents a 15 minute block time. I have been trying to create a border for each class (class times vary from 45 minutes to 2 hours) while leaving the in-between lines blank. For each 45 minute class, I select the three cells in a column, scroll down the border selection tool and select the outside border icon, next select the type of line, then the weight, finally the color, and so on. Once I get about 50% done working my way across the spreadsheet, buggy things start to happen. For example, a horizontal line will extend across several columns, sometimes intersecting previously defined class blocks. If I try removing the errand lines, then all the frames that do require a border at that position get their border errased. I them have to go back to those cells to re-assign a border segment, but then the unwanted horizontal line will reappear in the blank cells again. Very frustrating. Also, in my opinion, there are some cell frame options that are missing in this program. I t would be nice to have a button to select the top and bottom of a frame or group of frames at the same time. At present, you have to first select the top border, format it, then the bottom border and format it. Same goes for left and tight border sections. You can't select the two outside edges to apply the same style/thickness/color. Excel's border formatting commands are much better in this regard.

I played around with the border options today and although I didn't have the borders going where they were not wanted I understand your frustration having to set either all four or just one border at a time.
Just as an option, would filling the sets of cells with a light colour for each class work better for you?

Is it possible to easily view the actual (not displayed) value of a cell?

Is it possible to easily view the actual value of a cell calculated by a formula, not the displayed value after it has been rounded off?
For instance, if you enter the number 1.23456789 and display it rounded to 3 decimal places, you can still see the full, actual value in the formula bar:
The problem arises when you reference that number in a formula: you can't see the underlying value (even though it's obviously known to Numbers):
Is there a way to get the formula bar (or a tooltip) to show the full, unrounded value? Changing the display to more decimal places is not very convenient, especially on big spreadsheets. Maybe it could be done via AppleScript?
A related issue arises when you try to look at the sum or average of a number: if the numbers being summed have the same number of rounded decimals, the sum displayed is rounded too. I find this very annoying: I want to see the actual value, not how my spreadsheet may be displaying it in that cell.
Although, curiously, rounding to any number of decimals as long as they are not all the same displays the full, correct underlying values:

I did it with an AppleScript.
Now any time I have a cell or cell range selected, I do one click (AppleScript menu > Display Value at Full Precision), and it shows me a popup alert that simply reads:

Is there a way to auto fill cells with the exact number in mind?

I am trying to avoid this:
Column "A" is used as a "MATCH(" point for an "INDEX(" formula in another spreadsheet, and although cell A329 says 73.14, which is what the other sheet can identify to populate the particular row five columns over, its really
73.1399999999... thus, not giving me the correct reference and not populating properly.
Is there a solution?
I have about 1,500 rows to go through, I know I can do this manually, one at a time, but I'm pressed for time.

Re: too many numbers
In a helper column enter a rounding formula and fill down...
=ROUND(A2,2)
Copy the helper column and paste Values over column A.
