Cellular Data Off?

Simple dumb question: What is cellular data that you now easily have the ability to turn off and on? Is that Edge as opposed to 3G?

Prior to iOS4 with the 3G and 3GS, you could turn 3G network access off for internet access via the carrier's network to conserve battery. When doing so, internet access was still available via EDGE or GPRS - whichever was available. This did not disable internet access entirely via the carrier's cellular network.
Turning Cellular Data Off completely disables internet access via the carrier's cellular network - just as it has been possible to enable or disable wi-fi access for internet access.

I am out of the country. I turned my cellular data off and connected to wiFi . However, it is still showing that i am connected to a network.  How can i be sure that i am not being charged for roaming?

Make sure data roaming and cellular data is turned off.  If you don't want to receive calls or SMS then put your phone in airplane mode and reactivate WiFi

  • HT3529 I am confused about messaging. Shouldn't I be able to send and receive messages with cellular data off?  I can usually send the message, but often do not receive messages until I either have wifi or turn cellular on.

I am confused about messaging. Shouldn't I be able to send and receive messages with cellular data off and without wifi? I can send the message but often do not receive messages from others, iPhone or other, until  I turn on cellular or wifi.

Depends on the type of Message.
SMS messages will send and receive with data off.  and while you can guarantee you send using SMS you cannot guarantee that whoever replies to you does also. They may be replying thorugh iMessage if they are using iPhones.
However Android should be sending through SMS.
You can turn off iMessage if you want to, though people with limtied SMS text messaging in their plans may not appreciate it, and stop messaging you.

You only asked the question 4 times.  You have to repeat it at least 10 times to get an answer here, and then only if you supply useful info about your phone.

  • If I turn Cellular Data OFF on Iphone4S (and Enable3G too) should it still be connecting to my home Wi-Fi?

I know there's heaps on this topic overall, but just want straight answer please - so if I turn Cellular Data OFF and Enable 3G OFF on Iphone4S, should I still be receiving emails via my Home Wi-fi...curious that's all doesnt make sense to me!

Thanks for your reply...I am worried about connection issues overall I guess, and that one popped into my head as a result...I was recently charged $75 from phone provider when my son went on YouTube for a mere 20 minutes (after useage data had been already used) (this may not relate in any way, however being a new user I am just a bit freaked out about what can/cannot happen on this darn phone lol!

  • With cellular data off will I still receive voice calls on my iPhone 4s

WIth cellular data off will I still receive voice calls on my 4s?

Yes, cellular data is another way of saying internet access over the cellular network...separate function from cellular voice service.

  • IOS 6 Facetime Cellular Data Off Switch

I saw an iPhone running iOS 6 today that had a Settings Switch to turn off Facetime usage of cellular data.
It was in a cluster of on off switched below the Wi-Fi Plus Cellular on off switch reached by selecting General then Cellular.
I understand that this first appeared with Beta 4 that my iPhone 4 did not offer even though it did off Beta 3 at an earlier date.
Well now that iOS 6 is no longer Beta, my iPhone believes it is up-to-date, and the switch is not to be found on it.
My iPhone Settings say its version is 6.0 (10A5376e). Is this still on Beta 3 or on the release of 6? It thinks it is up-to-date.

Thanks for the clarification; perplexed as to why not though given that it works on 4S in 3G.
There might have been an argument that 4G was needed to keep up but, given that camera resolution is less on the 4 than the 4S, less bandwidth ought to be needed so why exclude the 4?

  • Cellular Data off, but unable to use services over wifi

I have turned off cellular data and followed suggestions posted on other threads to reduce data usage -- and am connected to wifi in my office, but cannot do anything on my iPhone5c.  Even when I am just wanting to surf on Safari -- the error "Cellular Data is turned off" "Turn on Cellular Data or use Wi-Fi to access data." pops up.  I am showing on my Settings > Wi-Fi that I'm connected.  Any idea what the problem is?

Are you actually getting a valid IP address on the WiFi network? What did your IT department say about it when you asked? Perhaps they have it configured so that unapproved devices can not access the Internet...

  • Needs daily reset when cellular data off

When I am using the ipone with cellular data turned off, the telephone function freezes every second day. I need to reset the iphone. Genius bar has told me that this is not an apple issue. The network provider (SoftBank Japan) has told me it is not their problem, but that if I switch on cellular data every day it will go away. Haha!!!!! Anyone elsewhere have the same issue? This is a major issue as I am paying an extra $7 a month for a variable tariff!

Yes, that is normal. The signal bars still show because the iPhone can make calls and send SMS, which still requires connectivity. iPad has neither of these, so once cellular data is turned off, it doesn't need the cellular network for anything.

  • Cellular Data Off & 3G Calls question

If I turn off Cellular Data and leave 3G enabled, the "3G" icon disappears on the status bar, so are my phone calls still over 3G?

When accessing the internet via your carrier's 3G network, your internet connection will be faster and more battery will be used when doing so.
If you don't need or want a faster internet connection when connected to your carrier's cellular network, you can turn 3G network access off which you aren't using for internet access via your carrier's network when Cellular Data is turned off. When cellular data is turned off, you can't access the internet via your carrier's network via your carrier's 3G, EDGE, or GPRS network, whichever is available at the time.
You will place and receive calls and exchange SMS/MMS via your carrier's 3G network when Cellular Data is turned off if 3G network access is available at the time, and if 3G network access is turned off in addition to having Cellular Data turned off, you will place and receive calls and exchange SMS/MMS via your carrier's EDGE or GPRS network whichever is available at the time.

  • Cellular data off warnings

I have a new iPhone 6 Plus. My plan with Verizon is for 250mb/ month as I use little data. I work in an area that has very bad cell phone service as well. If I leave cellular data turned on the battery of the phone drains at the rate of about 20% an hour. For those 2 reasons the vast majority of the time I keep cellular data turned off unless I need it at the time. If I am not on WiFi at the time anytime I try to open any app, even the settings app, or switch apps I get a warning that cellular data is turned off. I am very aware that cellular data is turned off as I have it turned off on purpose. I don’t need to be reminded every time I open every app or switch between apps that it is turned off. I often bounce between apps frequently and the alert messages are not wanted, not needed, and extremely annoying. How do I stop these pop up alerts once and for all without having to turn cellular data on which is not an option as it kills the battery at work and the operating system uses too much data that drains my small allotment of monthly data? This was bad enough on the iPhone 5 running iOS 7 but has escalated greatly on iOS 8.

I've had this as well, finally got frustrated enough to talk with Apple, here's the gist
First, it's not Apple, iOS, or the iPhone, it's the app.
The app wants data from the net, with no connection it's telling you it can't get the data...it's pi$$ed
There is no way around it, it's in the app. In most cases, like mine, the app wants to display an ad because it's free and the owner wants money. So, since they can't access the internet they can't get the ad to display. Whatever ad you're seeing, if any, is from the last time it had a connection. Since they don't get paid for an old ad they want to grab a new one to show you. It's all about money.
In some cases the request is legit, they do need data to run the app, or to give you the information you're asking for, or to check if there are any notifications or badges. Valid, but still annoying.

  • HT4203 when i turn my cellular data off,

my phone still seems to be constantly searching for a signal, killing the battery? is this the case and if so how do i disable it so i don't have a dead phone

Cellula telephone service and cellular data service are two different things. As long as you are using the cell telephone service the iPhone is going to search for service.

  • Iphone 5 "No service" when cellular data is switched off

Hi I've had my iphone 5 for about 3 weeks now.
I used to switch off cellular data on my iphone 4 because I'm always near
wifi at home or at work, because I don't want any nasty bills at the end of the month.
I switched cellular data off on my iphone 5 and noticed that I lose network service, and when cellular data is re-enabled I get service again!
I thought it was maybe just a bug so I Restored.
But same issue, then I waited for newer firmware hoping the issue would be fixed and updated to 6.1
but the issue has still not disappeared.
I then decided to ask another iphone 5 user to switch their cellular data off to see if it did the same thing.... It also lost network!!!
I am on Telecom and the other user on Vodafone. (Newzealand)
I don't have this issue with my old iphone 4, so what's going on?
Does any one else have this issue?

No, it's not a common issue with the iPhone 5.
    Replace the SIM.
    Reboot the router.
Confirm the router is running the latest version of firmware available.
If the problem continues, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

  • It's my understanding that when traveling overseas, all i have to do is turn off cellular data to avoid high data charges.

it's my understanding that when traveling overseas, all i have to do is turn off cellular data to avoid high data charges.

With Airplane Mode you will not receive phone calls.  If you are just worried about Data Charges then just go to Settings>Cellular>Data 'Off'  This may also turn your iMessage off such that all your iMessages even in a WiFi environment go out as Text Messages.  If you still want to use iMessage from Apple device to Apple device in a WiFi network then go to Settings>Messages> and turn it back on after you have set Cellular Data to Off.  Ckuan is correct though about having some per minute received or outgoing call and text charges.  For one example, if you were traveling in Canada but didn't have a Canada Plan you would pay about 89 cents per minute and 50 cents per send / receive Text.

  • HT4203 what is the difference between turning off "enable 3G" and "cellular data"

what is the difference between turning off "enable 3G" and "cellular data"?

Turning enable 3G off turns 3G network access off. This does not prevent the iPhone from internet access via your carrier's EDGE or GPRS network which is much slower.
Turning Cellular Data off turns cellular data off completely. No internet access via your carrier's cellular network.
