Certified Refurb out of the box today...Eternal Startup time after upgrades

Updated OSX to 10.4.8 along with various other suggested (iTunes,etc)...there was connection interruption before the beginning of OSX upgrade during download. ReInstalled upgrades. Restarted...haven't been able to get to desktop ever since. Only the apple menu and beach ball spinning in the OS X initializing screen with no activity. Waited up to 30 minutes. No activity. Very ****** and disappointed. I spent a lot of time researching Dells and Macs. I was sold on a "stable" operating system. Apple Care opens tomorrow and luckily theres an apple store in town. Just wish this hadn't happened so quickly. I stalked the Fed Ex man all week. Any suggestions from anyone? Help?

This most likely affected your system and not just the updates - Apple will prob. get you to do a reinstall.

If it is just out of the box, I would take it straight back to Apple and ask them to fix it.
Why should you have to mess around with fixing a device?

  • Trouble with log in after my brand new, out of the box computer, sleeps.

I'm having trouble logging in after my computer sleeps, I cannot directly do so even though my user account option is displayed.  I have to "choose another user" and re-choose my user account.  Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know if it can be fixed?
Info: Computer is brand new, out of the box today.  There are 4 other accounts set up on the computer.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • 12GB already used on out-of-the-box refurb MBP?

    Hi-
    Just a quick question--
My refurbished 15-inch MBP (2.2 Ghz, 120 GB hard disk) just arrived. I took it out of the box, started up and registered, and was planning to shift things from my old Powerbook G4 in Target disk mode, etc, but haven't done ANYTHING else yet. Out of curiosity I clicked on About this Mac, and saw that my HD has a capacity of 111.47 GB (I understand that "120 GB" probably means about 111 GB in reality), but that there is only 99.05 GB available, and 12.42 GB already used. Is that how much is needed for the basic Tiger (10.4.10) and applications that came preloaded on my MBP? If not, any ideas why 12.42 already used? Should I do an erase-and-install with Tiger OS? Do you think Apple didn't fully clean or erase the disk?
    Thanks,
    Samantha

When Apple says "120 GB hard drive" they mean 120 billion bytes. But strictly speaking, 1 GB is 10243 bytes, not 10003 bytes.
So when Finder says "111.47 GB capacity", it means 111.47 gigabytes, which is 111.47×10243=119.69 billion bytes. So your question is actually what happened to the missing 296 MB (or 0.31 billion bytes), and the answer is one of rounding error, disk overhead, or an extra partition on the hard drive used for booting. (The Boot camp forum has comments about an "extra" 300MB partition on the hard drive.)
Unfortunately, the misleading "x GB hard drive" label for what is really an x÷1.0243 GB drive has become an industry standard, and is always stated in the fine print.

  • X4100 LOM problems out of the box

Straight out of the box I am having trouble connecting to lom. Using a serial cable I can connect and see the lom service start after power is connected, when the login line appears i loose control of the session. Any ideas? I don't know what the IP address is set to so I can't setup via browser.

Well, I took my 16GB iPhone 3g (white) back to the Apple Store today and the Genius looked it over -- said that's the first keyboard problem he's seen come in and mentioned that it was strange the "dead zone" on the touch screen was vertical since, according to him, most "dead zones" tend to be horizontal areas. He said the touch screen matrix is laid out in three horizontal bands on the screens.
Bottom line: he gave me a new working iPhone 3g.
He did mention that all returned iPhone 3g's are being sent directly back to the iPhone 3g engineering team for full "autopsies", not just sent back to factory for refurb. He said they want to fully diagnose and understand what defects are out there so as to solve the root cause moving forward.

  • IPod Nano 7th Generation - Bad out of the box?

I just purchased the iPod Nano 7th generation today and came home to sync it with iTunes.  iTunes recognizes the device for a second then I receive a "Disk was not ejected properly.  If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off." message.  I can see the iPod in iTunes for a second then it disappears.  As I keep it plugged in it will recognize, disappear, reapear then disappear again.
I purchased an iPod Touch 5th generation today and that is working just fine (as well as synching my other iDevices). Is this nano bad out of the box?

Same thing happened to me. It did download the playlists I wanted, but the next time I plugged it in it acted as though it was being plugged in for the very first time, (regsitration and set up etc.)
But the really bad news is the BATTERY LIFE. maybe get one hour of play time before it drains to zero.
    Anyone else have this issue?

  • HP Pavillion Does NOT work Straight Out of the Box after Purchase

My daughter bought a new HP Pavillion from Office Depot before starting computer classes at the university.  The first one would not work at all and after the tech folks tried all that they could and it would not work, the Office Depot staff exchanged it for another one.  Straight out of the box, it does not work. It crashes constantly.  My daughter has spent HOURS that she needs for assignments on the phone with HP tech support.  Here is where she stands with the situation now:  She bought the extended warranty, but apparently that does not cover computers that don't work.  The HP warranty....does not apparently assure that you get a working computer either, even when it's just days old and won't function.  So....after spending from about 1p to nearly 6p today on the phone with HP tech support, she is not assured that it will work.
They are calling back on Friday to see.
So if it is NOT working, are we just out of luck with a piece of junk that does not function except as a word processor?  That won't connect to the internet without crashing?  We have been given no options or assurances.
( Post edited by Moderator)  When you buy a computer, it should work when it's brand new.  If you have a warranty, does that mean that HP stands behind their product and refund the consumer's money when it doesn't?  The new HP Envy printer did not work, due to a defective ink cartridge enclosed with it.  Does any HP product work at all?

    @Mariellynne
I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post ( serial numbers and case details).

  • Just got a new IPAD3, straight out of the box, but I cant charge it, I have tried with the power plug and cable out of the box but no joy, i have tried resetting the iPad but still no joy, have tried different plug sockets, different plugs/cables, help

Just got a new IPAD3, straight out of the box, but I cant charge it, I have tried with the power plug and cable out of the box that came with it but no joy, i have tried resetting the iPad but still no joy, have tried different mains plug sockets around the house with no joy, I have tried different USB mains plugs but again no joy, I tried using my new iPad cable into the USB port of my MacBook Pro laptop but still no joy, then, I tried using my old iPod classic cable into my MacBook Pro and that worked, so I have a way of charging my new iPad3 but its not practical as i have to take my MacBook Pro everywhere if I want to charge it which kind of defeats the object of having an iPad, has anybody experienced anything similar and how was it fixed? can anybody help me please...

    Grumpy Gator,
Please note it did say at the store's discretion, but people have actually been able to return it to the on-line store. (I only saw a couple who tried.)
And given the outcry, I would think Apple might have other Apple stores join in. Just in case, though, if you can, you might bring it in today.
If it's an ARS, my guess is they can stick to their 14 day return. Apple cannot force them to do it. SO if it's not bought directly from Apple, and it's past the 14 day deal, I'd bring it in to the store today if you have one. When I gave people the cnet.com site, I gave it so people could read it and know only Apple had made the decision for Apple. And I suggested to some that an Apple reseller would probably stick with their own return policy.
Because Arnie had just bought his, he should be able to return it to Apple or an ARS because an ARS has to have some kind of full refund or at least return for credit within 7 or 14 days of purchase.
    Hope this helps.

  • Works out of the box... my ***

So I'm on my second macbook. The first was determined to be DOA because of the adapter sizzle/heat/seperating casing.
So now my second ones keyboard and trackpad randomly stop working. It usually happens when the machine is running hot, usually about 30 minutes of use. Reboots don't help. Resetting PRAM didn't help. Working in a new user account doesn't help. Still freezes while working in windows. Did an archive and install, and yep still freezes. The only thing that makes it better is to shut it down and letting it cool off. So what does this lead me to believe?? Its a hardware problem. I ran the hardware test from the CD, everything is "normal".
So i take it into the "genius" bar, tell them my issues, he says that its probably the logic board, so he orders in the logic board and a new top case (why, i have no idea). Says they'll run a 24 hour test on it to see whats causing it.
So I get a call today (a day later) saying they ran the machine straight for 3 hours, and it didn't happen once. So they told me theres nothing they can do about it, and that if it happens again, to call apple care (already did that before, told me to reset pram and use a different account) and to bring the case number into the store. What good does this do? The problem is still there, and they've done nothing to fix it.
So my question is to the people who have had a similar keyboard/track pad freezing problem... has anything worked for you? When you took it in for repair what did they fix or replace??
Second, how can apple market their products as "just working, out of the box" when so many people have had problems with them?? I was worried before I bought the macbook because of all the complaints/issues, but felt reassured when people told me that the chance of getting a faulty machine were slim... now i'm on my second macbook that still isn't working.
Don't get me wrong, i love the mac os, and the mac software, but I'm extremely dissapointed with the quality of the mac machines... my hp laptop was much more reliable than the macbook, too bad I sold it to buy one.

"...these guys aren't going to give you a break."
Not sure what you mean by that Nick. All I advised was to allow Apple to take care of it.
Beth, it does seem like you have had a run of bad luck. I don't know what to say other than call either the store and ask for the manager or call AppleCare and ask that your case be escalated to a second tier rep. Whatever you do, be calm, be firm, and be polite and I am sure that things will get taken care of.
Do let us know how it works out. I for one am interested in how this plays out for you. Honestly.
BTW, as an aside, it is possible that your thread is getting less views and less of a response because of the filtered language in your title. While I certainly do understand your frustration, there really is no need to be like that on a peer support forum. We are not Apple employees and your frustration with Apple is misdirected here.
Just a thought and take it in the friendly spirit in which it is honestly intended.
    Peace.

  • G580 can't backup right out of the box. Not enough space

I recently aquired a G580 with the i5 processer, 500gb hard drive and  Win8. I see the lenovo center is telling me to do a backup and since I just set it all up the way I wanted I figured it's a good idea anyway. I follow the instructions and it automatically makes a path to the D drive. I click backup and it say's there isn't enough space?
Seems my hard drive was partitioned from the factory with only a 25gb (24.9 to be exact) D drive. Now the only thing on the D drive is an applications folder with nortons and a driver folder with what looks to be backups of the OEM drivers. All this takes up 2gb of space. The backup is saying it needs 25.2 gb. So even without those files on the D drive I still wouldn't be able to make a backup.
I am reading the partitioning thread but I'm lost really. Plus I don't really want to be messing with partitions on a brand new machine out of the box. It seems I might have too though. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,
Let me suggest a few things. I guess that will clarify few of the doubts.
    1. The factory default image is saved on the OEM partition (hidden). This can be used through One Key recovery for loading factory defaults.
    2. Refer to this link on creating a back up of factory default image. This can be used to get Windows back in case of hard drive failure or replacement. Applies to Ideapads also. Link
    3. The option of creating Backup using the One Key Recovery software is for the current system image and not the factory default image. Hence the size will vary from user to user and I guess the D drive will not be sufficient for this. Anyhow, as you mentioned, creating the backup on external drive makes more sense.
Hope I was able to clarify few things.

Out of the blue today, my gmail will not send.  I recently upgraded to Mavericks. But I have not had problems until today.  I can receive mail but not send. Any easy suggestions of what to do?

I have been having the exact same problem for weeks now with gmail.  None of my computers will send Gmail (they will recieve) and my Maverick computers (10.9.1) show gmail smtp.gmail.com as "offline".  I had installed Post Box and apple support thought it was that i had too many accounts (I have 2 ipads, an iphone (latest iOs), a work and home iMac and a powerbook).  I disabled all my gmail accounts in Mail and still no go from PostBox either . I tried connection doctor and it just spins for outgoing and say I either haveve the wrong pw or login - I dont.  I terminaled and tested port 465 (according to gmail instructions) and it works (port 25 did not).  I can access gmail from the webmail and send/recieve mail from it and it shows up in my webmail outbox. It is configured for imap.I just cannot send mail at all from any gmail account from any apple device using Mail (or PostBox). I am at a loss as was the apple support person who wished me good luck very politely and sympathetically.

  • MacBook Pro 15" i7,  out of the box w/problems

My MacBook Pro is brand new out of the box, less than 48 hours, and I'm already having issues with it.
Before the first 24 hours out of the box, I got a message for a forced shut down (see image here: http://www.mactropolis.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/macosxkernelpanic.png)
The following day, after coming out of sleep mode, I found it with a scrambled screen.
I haven't installed or transferred anything onto it whatsoever, but just been using Safari. I've heard that people are having problems with using Safari with webpages using Flash, but that might not explain the forced shut down.
I ran disk utility after the forced shut down and a few permissions were fixed but there were no other problems. After the scrambled screen, I ran an extended hardware test twice, and no problems were detected
I'm not sure there are any grounds for taking this to the Genius Bar, but I'm rather irritated for this to be happening when I haven't really started using this computer for more than browsing the internet.
Any suggestions? Might it be as simple as using something other than Safari?

The solution is extremely simple, return it for another. If you bought it from an Apple Store it should be no problem. If you bought it from an Apple Reseller you need to deal with them directly.
    Don't wait, do it today.
    Roger

  • Broke out of the box and itune update not working

Just got apple tv delivered today but it wasn't working out of the box... flashing white light..
So i connected it to itunes via micro usb and itunes won't restore it looks like the .dmg is missing..
This is really bad, surely apple have noticed the software update is missing???
Did this update work for anyone?

It's impossible to know how much work there is putting it back, it sounds simple but it might not be, it's been down a few days now, I suppose it depends on how much inconvenience it is to return it for another.

  • Image capture for web-browsers out-of-the-box -- really no hopes?

    Hi all,
I planned to extend user's interface for my web2.0 app with a webcam. It looks for me like JMF is the only framework, which promises a multiplatform usage for web-surfers. Therefore, I tried some JMF code and some JMF samples already. However it looks for me now like one should rather forget about the installers providing an "out-of-the-box webcam support ready for housewives". I'd wish i am wrong.
Would you believe one can really make a simple installer enabling browsers like firefox, ie, safari and opera to upload a webcam snapshot by a single mouse click?
Thank you for your hints and comments,
    have a nice day,
    Valery.

    hi cat2014,
Welcome to the forums and sorry to hear about your sound trouble.
To check what's going on, can you provide these additional info:
    1. What's the model of your lenovo unit (eg. Y50-70)
    2. When you play a music file (ie. iTunes or YouTube), is the volume fluctuating but there's no sound comming from the built-in speakers?
       - Link to picture
If the speakers are enabled and the volume is fluctuating, this means that the sound adapter is okay and there's most likely a problem with the speakers. To check, try to:
      a. Use an earphone or an external speaker and observe if you can hear a sound
      b. Press the Windows Key +X and choose Device Manager. On the Device Manager window, navigate to Sound, video and game controllers and uninstall the sound adapter (ensure that you delete the device driver). When finished, do a scan for hardware changes. Windows will now use a generic sound driver and observe if you can how hear a sound from the built-in speakers
Let me know how it goes.
    Regards

  • Out of the box macbook pro, not charging

    Hi,
I just purchased a Macbook Pro yesterday. I did as indicated and waited till the battery was fully charged before I unplugged it upon first use. As soon as it said "fully charged" I unplugged it and it showed 96% battery life. I used my laptop today and reached 60% of my battery life. I decided to plug it in, once again it reached "fully charged" and as soon as I unplugged it is only shows 97% charged.
I know that they are designed not to fully charge but shouldnt I be expecting closer to 100% capacity out of the box ?
    Thank you

Either return the computer from where purchased or call Apple tech support ASAP.
