CF8 Verity K2 server excessive memory

I can see this is an old post, but it still appears to be
relavent today even with CF8. My understanding is that CF8 is using
Verity K2 5.5 (same as CF7). I am able to take up a massive amount
of system memory just by simply adding collections without even
indexing them. I noticed this problem when we started getting ready
deploy several of our home grown CMS products onto our development
server and I noticed that a large chunck of memory was being taken
up.
So, I decided simply to see what the server would do if I
just started adding a bunch of empty verity collections. The memory
taken up by just 60 collections was over 1G. I tried to take it to
120 collections, but verity kept crashing (out of memory errors).
I read in this post (
Verity
Not Working in CF MX 7) that it was possible to seperate out
the verity server from the CF server, so I have been attempting to
do just that. Rob Rush provides a good informational link in that
post. So far I have been unsuccessful. I have followed that
instructions in the CF documentation and from the technote and it
seems like I have the two servers communicating, but when I go to
perform an index, it fails.
If anyone has successfully seperated the servers, it would be
of great interested and help to me if you can shed any light on
this.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried just re-installing the CF8
Search server, but it still didn't work so I uninstalled it and
then reinstalled it. After that I was able to create the new
collections and finally, re-index the new collections. All seems
well for now. I have four more systems to recreate the collections
for and then re-index all of them.
This whole thing begs the questions:
1. How long is this installation going to survive?
2. Is this an indication of a very fragile product?
3. Are you and I the only ones having problems?
4. Are you and I the only ones using CF8 Verity?
5. Is Adobe aware of any problems with CF8 Verity?
6. Is there something wrong with my code that has worked
successfully with CF4, CF5 & CF6 now that I'm using CF8?
I’m sure there are other questions that should be asked
but I’m too tired and hungry to think about them right now.
Thanks again for your insight.

  • Media Server Consuming Memory

My project is forwarding an RTMP stream to an RTMFP (multicast stream) using a server action script. In forwarding this stream, the AMSCore process keeps consuming memory. This consumption of memory requires the system to be rebooted repeated. How can this be prevented?

I did not think I could use the sample multicast application with my
project's software. Instead,  I compared the outbound NetConnection and
NetStream code in the sample application with the outbound NetConnection
and NetStream code in my project's multicast server actionscript. One of
differences I discovered is that my project's application connected to the
rtmfp group with the following call:
    nc_connect..connect("rtmfp:");
    while the sample called:
    nc.connect(resetUriProtocol(streamContext.client.uri, "rtmfp"));
Therefore, in my project's actionscript, I replaced connection to the
"rtmfp:" serverless group with a connection to the application uri:
    net_connect.connect("rtmfp://127.0.0.1:" + port + "/" + application.name)
This change fixed the excessive memory consumption. So, why does the
connection to serverless network endpoint consume memory on Windows Server
2008 R2 to the point that all of the virtual memory is used or it crashes
    the system?

  • Since installing the last update I am getting warnings through AVG that friefox is using excessive memory - 215 MB. Please provide input as to whteher this is a matter of concern becuase the window is coming up constantly.

I am on a dell 620 laptop. Every time I get on Firefox, an AVG window is popping up saying that excessive memory is being used (215 MB) and it recommends that I log out and log back in for faster processing. Logging out does not make a difference. The last update also disabled my AVG tool bar from the internet screen which I am not sure matters much, but I am concerned about the excessive memory use warning. Can you please provide me guidance about this matter?

Thanks but I have no idea how to do that and don't know the purpose of the add- ons or what is considered critical in the updates so that is outside of my knowledge level and comfort. How do I find out what is critical in the update without devoting a major chunk of my life to it? This is getting frustrating from my perspective. I am going to contact AVG and ask them how this pop up is gauging what to interpret critical memory use. If you have any other thoughts they are appreciated

  • CF8 verity and acrobat 9.0 errors

we have an issue where the CF8 verity engine is not indexing

the same PDF files generated with acrobat 8.1 work fine.
the acrobat 9.0 PDF files generate these errr messages in the

are there a new set of filters available for verity, so that
it can index acrobat 9.0 files ?
also, we found that while cf8 verity can index word 2007
.docx files, it does not pickup the Title metatag.

    I have figured it out....
Adobe Acrobat v8 saves PDFs in v5 (1.4) format by default. Adobe Acrobat v9 saves PDFs in v7 (1.6) format by default.
ColdFusions CFINDEX doesn't like PFDs saved in v6 (1.5) or higher. So if you upgrade to Adobe Acrobat v9 and want to use the PDFs in a CF verity search you need to configure Distiller to save in v5 (or earlier) format so they can be indexed. (Or just resave the files to be optimised for v5 after they have been created.)
My solution was to configure the application to do a CFFILE READ on the PDF when a user uploads the document into the system. The first 8 characters of the file contents indicate the PDF version. v4 and v5 will work. v6+ won't work.
    <cfif Mid(fileContents, 6, 3) lte 1.4>
<!--- This is PRE version 6 - it will be fine in the search --->
    <cfelseif Mid(fileContents, 6, 3) gt 1.4>
<!--- This is version 6-9 or higher - it won't work in the search - ABORT --->
    </cfif>
Hope this comes in handy for someone one day!

  • SQL Server 2005 Memory Explosions

    We have the following configuration:
ESXi 5.1.0 running on three clustered Dell 710 servers
    vCenter Server 5.1.0
The clustered servers have a total of 88G of RAM
SQL Server 2005 x86 running on a virtual Server 2008 R2 x64. All databases run fine for several days with memory usage seeming at ~25%. Suddenly, the memory consumption
shoots up to ~98% and we have to reboot the server. This is based on information from the task manager and the measurements in vSphere Client. I understand that the task manager is not an accurate measurement when AWE is active but that’s the best I’ve got
    at the moment.
Here's what we've done thus far:
Looked through the logs on the SQL Server and found the following:
In the System log, Resource-Exhaustion-Detected appeared at the same time but the highest memory consumption was services.exe at 125MB. Doesn’t seem to be the culprit.
In the Applications log, started getting MSSQLSERVER errors indicating ‘The Server was unable to load the SSL provider needed to login.’ These errors persisted through the downtime.
In the SQL Server Log File Viewer, we see the following errors, though I’m not sure that they are at all related:
A significant part of sql server process memory has been paged out. This may result in a performance degradation. Duration: 0 seconds. Working set (KB): 4464, committed (KB)
    66976, memory utilization: 6%
(About 4.5 hours later) Warning: the available page file has dropped below 4Mb. It is at this point – seemingly – that the memory usage has jumped up to near 100%.
The virtual server has 8G of RAM allocated. However, within the vSphere Client, the Memory Granted and the Memory Consumed seem to be at the same value…meaning that
the consumed value seems to be at 100% under normal operating conditions. Not sure why that is.
If anyone has any recommendations or areas to look, we would certainly appreciate your assistance! Thanks in advance.

I thank you guys so much for the rapid response! Please forgive the delayed response. All of this is on a DoD network and I cannot post to blogs on government machines. I have to go to a private
machine. Below is the information you asked for:
The Max Server Memory is 5.0GB and the Min Server Memory is 0.0GB
I have PerfMon currently running to try and capture as much information as possible.
We are getting a few other errors in the SQL Log that has given me some concern:
Failed Virtual Allocation Bytes: FAIL_VIRTUAL_RESERVE 65536
Memory Manager  VM Reserverd = 3673288 KB  VM Committed = 55688 KB AWE Allocated = 0 KB  Reserved Memory = 1024
KB  Reserved Memory In Use = 0 KB
There is also a series of MEMORYCLERK and CACHESTORE errors following
The Server was unable to load the SSL provider needed to login. SSL is used…
    o
I presume that this is due to the lack of memory to process these SSL request.
There are indeed several Error: 701, Severity: 17, State: 123

I run a query SELECT SERVERPROPERTY(‘edition’); and it shows ‘Standard Edition’ rather than ‘Standard Edition (64-bit).’
We are using Windows Server 2008 R2. I don’t believe that there was an x86 version released but I could be wrong.
I’ve actually looked at enabling the LPIM but we are on a domain that we have no control over and there are GPOs that make it very difficult if not impossible to gpedit but that is something
we can certainly look into with the domain owners if you think it might help.
I just ran the following script in SQL:
    Exec sp_configure ‘AWE’
    The response is  name – awe enabled, minimum – 0, maximum – 1, config_value – 0, run_value – 0
There is no third party software on this server.
The Max Server Memory is set to 5GM
Again, I do appreciate all of your help. Please let me know if I can provide anything further.

  • SQL Server 2012- Memory Leak Issue

    Team,
We are running a Mission Critical Application on SQL Server 2012 SP2(11.0.5058) which is configured on Always ON Synchronous mode. Offlate due to heavy development work, Application team have come up with stating memory issues. I have analysed all the areas
and everything looks normal. Please suggest if we have to patch the latest CU4 for SQL Server 2012 SP2.
The checks were performed on the below areas:
    - Errorlog, System Logs - No errors reported.
    - There are close to 8 Databases hosted on the instances which are all configured for AlwaysON. SQL Server is running on VM Infrastructure and the total physical memory allocated is 96GB out of which SQL is capped for 92GB.
-The Page Life Expectancy is healthy and is showing a greater number. There are no Signal waits either or pending memory grants.
    - The writes are more than reads for one of the databases which is flagged with application team. There are no blockings & Deadlocks.
Please suggest me the future course of action and your inputs are much appreciated.
    Best Regards,
    Sharath

Actual issue is- Application team have reported a memory leak and their builds have significantly slowed down. They suspect that its Database memory leak. However I have verified from database end and gave the above inputs.
The AOAGs are good. I was looking for any pointers whether there are any bugs which is related to memory leaks in SQL Server 2012.  I know all of them are addressed with SQL Server 2012 SP2.
Application team has NO idea about SQL Server do they ? And to say SQL Server has memory leak you have to actually prove it did they showed any proof. Its common for application team to say SQL Server is leaking memory because they are unaware about fact
by default SQL Server would take as much memory as possible and would release when SQLOS asks it to do so. This might give sign that it is leaking memory BUT IT IS NOT.
As you already said AOAG is working fine so I am presuming there is nothing much to worry. To monitor memory usage in SQL Server 2012 you can use below counters
SQL Server: Memory Manager-- Target Server Memory (KB)
SQL Server: Memory Manager--Total Server Memory (KB)
SQL Server: Memory Manager- Free Memory (KB)
SQL Server: Memory Manager--Database Cache Memory (KB)

  • Why Does Safari Use Excessive Memory with Gmail?

I am running Safari 7.0.1 along with Maverics (10.9.1) on a 2011 MacBook Air with 4 GB of memory. Just recently I have begun to notice excessive memory usage when using Gmail. I have iStat Menus as well as something called MemoryKeeper so I can monitor memory use in real time.
The table below shows numbers taken from Activity Monitor with each of the sites running in a single tab.  The Safari Web Content is through the roof with Gmail compared to My Yahoo or indeed with any other single site. In Gmail it starts out above 500 MB and slowly comes down to the lower end indicated if I do nothing. If I open tabs with both My Yahoo and Gmail, I sink below 100 MB and if I have three tabs open I'm heading to zero. As far as I can tell, the excessive memory useage only occurs with Gmail.
    Process
    Yahoo
    Gmail
    Safari
    156 MB
    167 MB
    Safari Web Content
    96 MB
    531-338 MB
    Kernel Task
    464 MB
    464 MB
    Free
    662 MB
    210 MB
Typically I will close Safari and start it again if I get much below 100 MB. I usually have to close Safari at the end of the day to refresh it for the next day. This has only become a problem within the last month or so, and I am at a loss to explain it. I thought it might be Mavericks related (though I have been running Mavericks since its release), but then the Safari I have on my 5 year old Mac Mini running Snow Leopard gives me similar results.
When I run Google Chrome I don't have any of these problems. Indeed, though it is not my preference, I am having to use it more and more for day to day activities or I have to stick with one tab if I am going back and forth between Gmail and other sites. I have not seen this problem reported elsewhere, so I have to believe there is something going on in my system. I have cleared the cache one time on both systems, but that doesn't seem to have made any difference. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.
    -Bill

I would not have even tried this app had I not heard about it on the Mac Rountable podcast (episode #222), where it received favorable comments from otherwise knowledgeable people. It also has a 4.5 star rating on the Mac App Store with 706 5-Star ratings out of 1,049. If you add up the 5-Star and 4-Star ratings you get close to 1,000 favorable rates right there. I have to wonder if people really know what's going on. Since the most obvious detrimental effects for me were centered around using Safari with Gmail on Mavericks, others must not be using that lethal combination. As I mentioned, using Google Chrome does not seem to have any obvious deliterious effects.
Well, there's going to be one more 1-Star rating reflecting my experience.

  • Firefox doesn't close but hangs in the background after closing it using up excessive memory up to 2gb.

When Firefox 8 loses connection to certain websites and I have to close it from the lower taskbar, it hangs in the background on task manager using excessive memory even after it is closed. I have seen it use up to 2gb of memory while closed but still hanging in the background in task manager. My computer slows down and when I try to open another browser window the little loading icon goes around and around so I check to see what is making it so slow. It is always firefox 8 hanging in the background using memory. I have 8gb of ddr2 memory on this 64 bit computer it shouldn't be slowing down because of a browser bug but it does.

From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the
issue may be caused by the clear history settings.
Press the '''<Alt>''' or '''<F10>''' key to bring up the tool bar.
    Followed by;
    Windows; '''Tools > Options'''
    Linux; '''Edit > Preferences'''
    Mac; ''application name'' '''> Preferences'''
    Then '''Privacy'''.
The button next to '''History''', select '''Use Custom Settings'''.
At the bottom of the page, turn on '''Clear History When Firefox Closes.'''
At the far right, press the '''Settings''' button. Turn on ONLY '''Cache''' and
'''Form And Search History''' leaving the others off.
This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up.

  • Why does AVG Internet Security keep warning me that Firefox is using excessive memory and advisin me to close it and reopen?

My browser was open and I was on Facebook. A message appeared from AVG Internet Security 2012, which is operating on my computer, telling me that FireFox was using excessive memory -- "260 MB of memory" and suggesting I close FireFox and reopen.
This has happened several times; also when I was on CNN and Yahoo webpages.

How much RAM do you have?
300MB is a lot if you only have 512MB, but not too much if you have 1 or 2 GB, or more.

  • Verity Search Server on Macintosh

I was intending to use the ColdFusion Verity Search Service but the service is unable in the ColdFusion Administrator. It would seem the server needs to be installed separately but the link in LiveDocs is unavailable, I’m using CF8 developer on a Macintosh, if anyone knows where I can find the installation software that would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know about that, pwizzard. Here's something else to consider. While there's no "Mac" installer, there is a Linux one. I think that will work for you. Note that you do need to have a license key for CF to get to it. (In other words, this won't work if you're using the Developer edition, because it has no license key.)
    Short answer:
Go to the page, https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=verity, enter your CF license key (standard or enterprise), and download the installer (for Linux) from there. Let us know if it works
It's also unfortunate that the /go/verity/ link fails. While we can't change the CF8 licvedocs page you found, I did change the corresponding CF9 page to offer the link above.
    Long answer:
As for how I figured out that this may be what you need, here's what I did, in case any of it may help you or others in the future.
First, I recalled that there was a page of installers that went along with CF. I couldn't remember the link, but I trusted that the Adobe CF site would get me there.
    - I went to the CF front page (can be found via google): http://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion/
    - choose link in lower right of right nav bar for CF8: http://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion/coldfusion8/
    - choose link to download trial
    - log in (if you don't want to login, just keep reading).
    - choose link for "related ColdFusion downloads": http://www.adobe.com/support/coldfusion/downloads.html
         - and note that you could also just visit that link directly, now that you know it, without needing to log in
    - there, it offers a section on "Verity (language packs and standalone installer)", and it has the link I offered above
Admittedly, that page says that the installer is meant for installing Verity on a machine separate from CF, so I wondered if it was what you really needed. I decided to search google for help (coldfusion install verity) and found this http://livedocs.adobe.com/coldfusion/8/htmldocs/help.html?content=othertechnologies_06.htm l. I guess that's the page you had found, because it offers a link to get to the installer, as http://www.adobe.com/go/verity, which fails (and because this is the CF8 docs, we can't even update it with a corrected link if we find one.)
But note that these help pages offer a popup box that offers a link to the CF9 docs: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/ColdFusion/9.0/CFMLRef/index.html. Unfortunately, that goes to the front page of the docs. You need to note where you were on the previous page (bummer). At the top of the CF8 doc page, we see that the page was within "Installing and Using ColdFusion / Installing Integrated Technologies". We can select that from the CF docs front page, which opens to http://help.adobe.com/en_US/ColdFusion/9.0/Installing/WSc3ff6d0ea77859461172e0811cdec18c28 -7ff1.html.
The link for the verity page itself is http://help.adobe.com/en_US/ColdFusion/9.0/Installing/WSc3ff6d0ea77859461172e0811cdec18969 -7ffd.html. Sadly, that page (almost identical to the CF8 one) also has that failing link, but at least we can update the page with the proper one.
I wasn't positive that it was the right link, until I did some more digging. (FWIW, I tried to find any old version of the go/verity page at archive.org, but no luck. Returning to the google search results list, I did find this, though: http://www.adobe.com/support/coldfusion/verity_reg/register/index.cgi. That looked just like the first link offered above, though only for CF7, so I was more confident that the first link I offered is indeed what you need.)
I thought to search google for the specific phrase "adobe.com/go/verity", and there it found a couple of other CF9 doc pages, and one of them (https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=verity) did also have the bad /go/verity link, and someone offered in a comment a link to (again) the original download page I offered (https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=verity). So that really seems the right page, and I have added a comment to http://help.adobe.com/en_US/ColdFusion/9.0/Installing/WSc3ff6d0ea77859461172e0811cdec18969 -7ffd.html.
One last thing: while the download page doesn’t have an OS X-specific installer, the help page does mention OS X and says getting this installer is the solution, and it does offer a Linux installer to look for, so I suppose that's what you are supposed to you. One thing that still has me a little suspect of things is that I did use a key to get to that download page, and I see the filename offered for the Linux installer is "coldfusion-search-lin.bin", not the "ColdFusion_9_Verity_linux.bin name offered". But maybe it's just a doc inconsistency.
Anyway let us know if it helps.

I've just started having a major issue with my laptop. Several time over the last few days, the system has slowed to a virtual standstill, making the machine unusable for long periods of time. I've checked activity monitor and something is using pretty much the entire physical memory, plus huge (30gb-plus) amounts of virtual memory.
It has eventually resolved itself each time, but it's a pretty major inconvenience. I've run a diagnostic and the results are posted in below. I don't know much about this type of stuff, but I noticed that a few processes were caught doing 'excessive wakeups' at the time I was experiencing problems. Has anyone got any idea what the problem might be and how it can be resolved?
    cheers
    Huw

Quit Dropbox and see whether there's an improvement.
    B.
Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Back up all data.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
    C.
Some OS X files (Installer package receipts) are missing or unreadable. Other OS files may be missing as well.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance. You can skip this step if you don't care about the data that hasn't been backed up.
Reinstall the OS.* Your data should be unaffected unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • Excessive memory utilization in Solution Manager 4.0

    Dear all,
I recently migrated a SAP Solution Manager 4.0 SPS13 (Unicode) system from a Sun E420R  with 2 CPUs and 4 GB of RAM to a  Sun T2000  with 32 CPUs and 32 GB of RAM. After doing st06, I realised that 31 out the the 32 GB of RAM are consumed by Solution Manager, which doesn't seem right, even if the system is a double stack system and Unicode. Stopping the Java stack, I had 22 GB free, still 12 GB for the ABAP stack looks excessive
Any ideas how I can see where the memory is consumed and how I can reduce its consuption? This piece of hardware is meant to host other systems as well, not only Solution Manager. I haven't configured yet alerts, monitoring etc, so the system is barely used
I am running on Solaris 10 and Oracle 10.2.0.2
    Many thanks
    Andreas
