CF8 verity and acrobat 9.0 errors

we have an issue where the CF8 verity engine is not indexing
PDF files created with acrobat 9.0
the same PDF files generated with acrobat 8.1 work fine.
the acrobat 9.0 PDF files generate these errr messages in the
verity logs

are there a new set of filters available for verity, so that
it can index acrobat 9.0 files ?
also, we found that while cf8 verity can index word 2007
.docx files, it does not pickup the Title metatag.

I have figured it out....
Adobe Acrobat v8 saves PDFs in v5 (1.4) format by default. Adobe Acrobat v9 saves PDFs in v7 (1.6) format by default.
ColdFusions CFINDEX doesn't like PFDs saved in v6 (1.5) or higher. So if you upgrade to Adobe Acrobat v9 and want to use the PDFs in a CF verity search you need to configure Distiller to save in v5 (or earlier) format so they can be indexed. (Or just resave the files to be optimised for v5 after they have been created.)
My solution was to configure the application to do a CFFILE READ on the PDF when a user uploads the document into the system. The first 8 characters of the file contents indicate the PDF version. v4 and v5 will work. v6+ won't work.
<cfif Mid(fileContents, 6, 3) lte 1.4>
<!--- This is PRE version 6 - it will be fine in the search --->
<cfelseif Mid(fileContents, 6, 3) gt 1.4>
<!--- This is version 6-9 or higher - it won't work in the search - ABORT --->
</cfif>
Hope this comes in handy for someone one day!

  • "Cannot use adobe reader to view pdf in your web browser" error in Windows 7 and Acrobat pro 8.1.7

I get the error "Cannot use adobe reader to view pdf in your web browser.  Reader will now exit.  Please exit your browser and try again" in Windows 7 x32 and Windows 7 x64 with Acrobat pro 8.1.7.  This happens when trying to open  a PDF file in Internet explorer 8.0.760 or when I open a PDF in Quickbooks 2008.  If I answer ok or cancel the file opens normally.  If I open acrobat 8 first then the pdf files open as expected.  I also tried a copy of Acrobat reader with no difference in the outcome.  Since this happens on two different computers one fresh copy of windows 7 x64 the other an upgrade to windows 7 x32 and they used to work before the change to windows 7, I assume there is some kind of incompatibility with windows 7 and acrobat.  Is this a known issue and will it be fixed in an update to acrobat in the near future?

tvandersluijs - I'm sorry if that screwed up your machine however:
    1. What version of Adobe Reader are you using because as you can see the registry entry is for Adobe Reader 9, if ur using Adobe Reader 8 then u need to specify ur version as PAllens entry suggested - "E.g. "C:\Program files\Adobe\Acrobat [version]\Reader\AcroRd32.exe""
    2. I've used this solution significantly because I have come across this specific issue for multiple users.
    3. All the registry entry does is tell Windows what program to use by default to open/view PDF documents.
My intention wasn't to screw up ur machine or anybody elses as I said I've used this solution many times however what I've should gave is the disclaimer to backup ur registry before u make mods so u can revert back in case. Also the ony other thing I can think of is that this solution was for Windows XP using registry editior 5, I'm noticing that the title of this thread is Windows 7.

After renaming my MAC hard drive, Acrobat, Illustrator and Bridge fail to launch. Acrobat returns the error message "An internal error occurred". I've checked this out and it seems related to user permissions. The version is Acrobat X. My machine has multiple user accounts. Any help would be appreciated. I renamed the drive to its original name but to no effect. RR

    I resolved the issue.
The problem is indeed a permissions issue with the Adobe Application Support folder.
First, in MAC OS Lion the ~/Library/ folder is hidden by default. You must unhide it in order to proceed. (if it is already visible in your ~/User/ folder, proceed to Step 4.)
    Next launch the Terminal application.
At the command line, paste the following command line: chflags nohidden ~/Library/
    Go to /Users/youruserid/Library/Application Support/Adobe
Get info on the ~/Adobe folder and reset your permissions to read/write and apply to all enclosed folders
    Problem solved. RR

  • CF8 Verity K2 server excessive memory

I can see this is an old post, but it still appears to be
relavent today even with CF8. My understanding is that CF8 is using
Verity K2 5.5 (same as CF7). I am able to take up a massive amount
of system memory just by simply adding collections without even
indexing them. I noticed this problem when we started getting ready
deploy several of our home grown CMS products onto our development
server and I noticed that a large chunck of memory was being taken
    up.
So, I decided simply to see what the server would do if I
just started adding a bunch of empty verity collections. The memory
taken up by just 60 collections was over 1G. I tried to take it to
120 collections, but verity kept crashing (out of memory errors).
I read in this post (
    Verity
Not Working in CF MX 7) that it was possible to seperate out
the verity server from the CF server, so I have been attempting to
do just that. Rob Rush provides a good informational link in that
post. So far I have been unsuccessful. I have followed that
instructions in the CF documentation and from the technote and it
seems like I have the two servers communicating, but when I go to
    perform an index, it fails.
If anyone has successfully seperated the servers, it would be
of great interested and help to me if you can shed any light on
    this.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried just re-installing the CF8
Search server, but it still didn't work so I uninstalled it and
then reinstalled it. After that I was able to create the new
collections and finally, re-index the new collections. All seems
well for now. I have four more systems to recreate the collections
for and then re-index all of them.
This whole thing begs the questions:
    1. How long is this installation going to survive?
    2. Is this an indication of a very fragile product?
    3. Are you and I the only ones having problems?
    4. Are you and I the only ones using CF8 Verity?
    5. Is Adobe aware of any problems with CF8 Verity?
    6. Is there something wrong with my code that has worked
    successfully with CF4, CF5 & CF6 now that I'm using CF8?
I’m sure there are other questions that should be asked
but I’m too tired and hungry to think about them right now.
    Thanks again for your insight.

  • Contribute "low on memory" and Acrobat won't redraw

I have two issues that I believe may be related.  First here's my system information
    WinXP SP3
    Intel Core2Duo E6550 = (2.33GHz)
    3GB RAM
    GeForce 8600GTS 512 MB Video
Running two 19" monitors, (at 1440x900 each)
Creative Suite Premium 2.0 (InDesign CS2, Photoshop CS2, IllustratorCS2, Acrobat 7 Professional, BridgeCS2, GoLive CS2Version Cue is disabled.)
Production Studio Premium 1.0 (Premiere Pro 2, Encore DVD 2, After Effects 7, Audition 2)
Contribute CS3, (including Bridge CS3, but I don't use it, I use Bridge CS2 for everything).
First Issue.  Intermittently, in both Adobe Reader 9, and Acrobat 7.0 pdf files that I have open will not display in the window properly, unless I reduce the size of the window to something quite small.  It will show the desktop in behind the window, or if I open a window on top, it shows that window even when I've moved it.
The second problem is similar, but occurs in Contribute CS3 and is always accompanied by a "Your system is low on memory..." error, until I reduce the size of the Contribute window, at which point, it is so small that it becomes unuseable.
The only other program that I have open at the time is Outlook 2007, with a couple of messages.
As this is happening, I open the Task Manager, see that there is plenty of available Physical Memory, and the CPU Usage is very low, under 10%.  I've set my virtual memory paging file to Custom Size of 4591MB.
The only way to fix it is to reduce the size of windows or close all the programs.  These two problems occur independently of each other.  Sometimes when I'm just trying to open a PDF file.
3GB should be plenty to run Contribute and Outlook, or Acrobat and Bridge.
What the heck is going on?

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes I have tried that, but to no avail.  The crazy thing is that it only really happens after I've been working in Contribute for a while.  Sometimes an hour or more.  Then it just starts doing this.
The redraw problem also affects other programs, that are not Adobe programs.  For example, when I open a Remote Desktop Connection to the web server where I am publishing, while this problem is occuring, the screen will not "draw" properly either.
I have a feeling that there is something strange about how Contribute, and Acrobat, and Windows share the memory, either the system memory, or the graphics memory.
Could this also be a problem caused by having both CS2 and CS3 programs installed?
    Chris

  • Adobe Reader and Acrobat Pro updates for 11.0.10 being pushed out through SolarWinds Patch Manager are not being recognized as applicable.

I am trying to update our Adobe Reader and Acrobat Pro to 11.0.10 using the default MSP packages with SolarWinds Patch Manager.  All of the systems keep reporting as 'NOT APPLICABLE'.  All of the workstations have Reader11.0.09, with about 10% still on 11.0.08 (due to the fact that the reader 11.0.09 package only patched about 2/3 of the systems).  All systems that have Acrobat Pro are 11.0.09.
In SolarWinds I am using the "Adobe Systems, Inc. Packages" node.
    Adobe Systems Acrobat 11 Catalog
    Adobe Systems Reader 11 Catalog
and the SW Patch Manager downloads the msp's straight from Adobe.
I have checked the msp's manually and they will update at least back to 11.0.07 in Reader, and 11.0.0 in Acrobat Pro. (I had an old stand alone system that still had Reader 11.0.07, and I did a new install of Pro and went straight to update 11.0.10)
The SolarWinds Tech said, "Okay. That content is produced by Adobe. Any questions concerning applicability logic or diagnosing why a package reports as NotApplicable when that's not expected would need to be directed to Adobe, as they are solely responsible for that content and its behavior".
I am new to SolarWinds Patch Manager, and any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you are attempting to use the SCUP catalogs outside of the MS solution.  I can almost guarantee you that Adobe didn't test it if it's not referenced in the ETK:  11   SCCM-SCUP — Enterprise Administration Guide
That being said there "should" be logging available in any deployment solution.   Since I am not familiar with Solar-Winds particular solution I can't say if it logs errors and how verbose those logs might be.    If you have logs then post the output and the forum members "might" be able to assist you.

  • Windows 7 and Acrobat 9 Pro (CS4)

Oh please, oh please won't someone help me.  Someone else HAS to have run into this.
I install CS4 and enter serial number on a Windows 7 RTM machine (64-bit).  It tells me I'm activated.  And I can use all the products just fine - except Acrobat.  As most of you know - CS4 without Acrobat is a little like buying a car without a steering wheel.  At some point, you're going to need it.
When I run acrobat, I get this: "Adobe Acrobat was installed as part of a suite. To enable Adobe Acrobat, please start another component of this suite (such as Adobe Photoshop)."
    So, here's what I've done:
    1) Deactivate, uninstall, reinstall, activate.  No go.
    2) Deactivate, uninstall.  Install just Photoshop CS4 and Acrobat.  Run Acrobat and I get the message, so I run Photoshop and it activates and then I run Acrobat again.  Same message.
    3) Referred to article at http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407134.html - but the file versions I have on Win 7 are higher than the ones specified in the article.
    4) Called phone support.  No help there - "Uninstall and re-install and you should be good."
No matter how many times I uninstall/reinstall or what order I do it in, I get this error on all of our Win 7 machines (3 of them).  And the best part?  Each install takes about 45 minutes or longer.
Please don't tell me that Windows 7 isn't supported yet.  Release date to full market is scheduled for October 22nd so if someone doesn't fix this issue they're going to have a LOT of support calls on their hands.
I understand Adobe does this to limit piracy of their software.  But at this point, they've basically rendered $1,000's of spending for our organization completely useless as we need to be able to produce PDFs of our work from CS4.
    Help?
    Thanks,
    Mark Gerlach

Please directly contact Adobe Technical Support via phone. They should assist you with this issue.

  • Print Problem - PDF is OK on Windows 7, but OK on Windows XP with "Acrobat Reader An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem."

I have received a PDF which prints fine in Windows 7 but with Windows XP I get "Acrobat Reader An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem." and a blank piece of paper passes through the printer. I appreciate that Windows XP is no longer supported but I would like to think that the solution to this problem is not too difficult!
    I have tried Acrobat 9, 10 and 11.
Any advice (apart from use Windows 7! ) would be most welcome.
    Many thanks.

If you use the same Adobe Reader versions with the same PDF on Windows 7 and XP, then I would expect the outcome to be the same.
Is this a local or online PDF?
If local, is the file really exactly the same?
    If online, in what browser?

  • Adobe Acrobat 9 Installation Error 2?

    Support:
I just purchased Adobe Creative Suite 4 for my office and I'm having issues installing Acrobat 9. All other applications install, etc: Photoshop, Dreamweaver. To get ready I uninstalled all my old CS3 software and used the CS3 clean utility from Adobe. Then I searched all my files and registry and deleted all leftover files and registry entries.
I restarted and began to install my wondrous new CS4! Everything went well until the end of the installation. I got an error saying Adobe Acrobat could not be installed. It gave me the below output, basically put: "Error: Error 2". I then went to the support site and installed the Adobe Air, Adobe Support Advisor. After a quick check of the "Creative Suite Product Install" option it returned, "The module found no solutions to report for the selected log file.".
    Adobe Installer Error Info:
"Sorry you are experiencing trouble with this installation.
Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional (At install, older versions get upgraded. A l'installation, les versions plus anciennes sont mises à niveau. Bei der Instalation werden ältere Versionen aktualisiert.)
    Error:
    Error 2."
I don't know what to do now. I desperately need Acrobat installed for my business. I have searched the support site up and down and have found no information on the issue. I did find a support issue which says, "Acrobat 9 is not installed as part of Creative Suite 4 on Windows (XP 64-bit, Vista 64-bit and 2003 Server 64-bit): Adobe Acrobat 9 fails to be installed as part of Adobe Creative Suite 4 on Windows XP 64-bit, Windows Vista 64-bit and Windows 2003 Server 64-bit." However I have an x86 (32bit) system. Hell, I even tried to install the Windows KB update file and it wouldn't let me due to my system being 32bit. Link to the issue below:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb407134&sliceId=1
I then also found a user who reported the infamous Error 2; however sadly he did not have the exact same issue although similar. He too ran the analyzer application and it also found no errors. He is also running a similar setup to mine (see specs below). He gets the same error when trying to install the other applications such as Illustrator, Photoshop, etc... To this day his issue has not been taken care of. Link to his issue is below:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b6f48a
My system information: Windows XP Pro SP3 with a P4 3Ghz, 2GB DDR RAM, Radeon X1650, multiple hard drives, and the most recent updates, software, etc...
Please help and thanks in advance,
    Mike

    Bob -
I know my original post was over a year ago, but unfortunately I wasn't ever able to resolve it.  I worked with tech support over the phone wasting hours of both of our time trying to resolve this problem.  Now when I need to use Acrobat 9 Pro, I have to access it with my laptop and then transfer my work back to my desktop computer in order to use the rest of the CS4 Suite on my desktop.  The crazy thing is I'm running the exact same XP software on my laptop as I run on my desktop and Acrobat on my laptop works great. So I have no doubt that Acrobat works well with 64 bit systems on Vista and 7, but I'm not very confident that by upgrading to a new windows operating system will result with success.  This issue seems so strange to me since I am able to run 50 other applications on my desktop from other software manufacturers and can successfully download new applications from any software manufacture with the exception of Acrobat. If anyone has a similar problem and can figure out a solution, please let me know.
    - Neil
