CFC's - Question about coding guidelines

I have a question about the following section in the
CF
Coding guidelines
quote:
{cfmxroot}
---wwwroot/ » web-accessible .cfm pages and .cfc Web
Services
---extensions/
--------components/ » tree for .cfc files
--------customtags/ » tree for .cfm custom tags
--------includes/ » tree for include files
---config/ » tree for configuration files
This implies that we have two Custom Tag Paths set up in the
CFMX Administrator:
{cfmxroot}/extensions/components/
{cfmxroot}/extensions/customtags/
We also have mappings for the root of the includes tree (for
cfinclude) and the custom tags tree (for cfimport):
/cfinclude » {cfmxroot}/extensions/includes/
/customtags » {cfmxroot}/extensions/customtags/
1. Why would you want to add both a custom tag path
AND a mapping for " {cfmxroot}/extensions/customtags/"?
2. The guidelines seems to imply you should use a custom tag
path for components, instead of a mapping. If the "components"
directory is already outside the webroot, then adding a CF mapping
shouldn't make it web accessible, right? So is there any benefit to
using a custom tag path versus a mapping?

It is up to you where you put your components and where you
put your custom tags. The standard way, as I know it, at least, is
to create a mapping for your cfc directory on the
Mappings page of the Coldfusion Administrator and to
register the path to your custom tag directory on the
Extensions/Custom Tag Paths page. In answer to your first
question, you will also need to create a mapping for a custom tag
directory if you intend to call tags using the template-attribute
of cfmodule.
Coldfusion considers the directory-path that you register on
the
Extensions/Custom Tag Paths page an absolute path. That is
what enables you to call a tag directly by name on any page of your
application, for example,
<cf_myCustomTag>.
One consequence is, if you stored a component myComp.cfc in
such a directory, you could instantiate it on any page simply by
running
<cfset myObj = createobject("component","myComp")>
However, this doesn't offer anything a mapping wouldn't. So,
in answer to the second question, I don't think one should use a
custom tag path for components. Mixing one's custom tags with one's
components only produces an oil-plus-water structure.

  • Questions about Rooting...

    Hi everyone, I’ve some questions about rooting my Xperia Arc S. Hopefully I’ll get helpful answers from you.
    If I root my phone, shall I get regular software official updates from Sony?
    Currently Sony is rolling out the ICS update. After rooting the phone am I able to upgrade my phone to ICS?
    While rooting the phone if any damage is done, can that be recoverable by installing a fresh OS or something?
    Does the rooting process delete all the existing contacts, messages, apps etc?
    Finally can anyone please provide a full proof guide/tutorial for rooting the Xperia Arc S?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Questions about using a PDF form online

    I have a client who wants to create an online version of a PDF form that they are currently using. I am currently trying to explain to them that this would be best done as an HTML web form, but I may not win this argument. I have only used PDFs for printed forms (either hand-written or using form fields) so I am not familiar with any problems that converting the form for use online would entail.
    When the 'Submit' button is pressed on the form, is there a way to redirect to another web page after the data is submitted? (i.e. does the PDF have access to it's outer 'environment'?)
    Are there any security issues submitting data using the PDF form as opposed to using a standard web form? (There may be sensitive data being submitted)
    I'm not sure how they plan to handle the data that is submitted, but there are several options in the submitForm parameters - I am assuming that using the HTML option would submit the data in the same format as a web form would. Am I correct here?
    Can the PDF be prevented from being downloaded or printed? This form should only be used to submit data to their server, not as a printed form.
    Are there any other 'gotchas' that I need to look out for? Does anyone have a recommendation for a site which contains any tutorials or guidelines for using PDF forms online?

    Thanks for the information.
    Yes, I agree that there is less reason for it to be a PDF form (Actually, no real reason other than the original form already exists in PDF), but I am unfortunately in the position that my input in this project is not necessarily being considered (my company is following direct -and inconsistent- directions from the client, and I have no contact with the client to ask questions about what their actual needs are). I have been told to give the client the 'Tomato' that they are asking for, even though they are describing an 'Apple'.
    The reason this form is not meant to be printed is that we have replaced the 'Signature' fields from the original form with checkboxes that the user must check to confirm they have 'signed' the document. If they are to print/fax/whatever the document, they should use the original form, not this one. And I am still trying to explain to them that this would be better served with an HTML web form, but I fear I am losing that battle.
    I have brought up the fact that it is not 100% guaranteed that Acrobat will be available in the browser, although I can only guess that it is less than likely that anyone will not have some sort of PDF viewer available to their browser.
    I will also mention that issues may arise if the file is not submitted from within the browser.

  • Basic questions about programing for J9 VM

    I need to create a java application to run on a Pocket PC 2003 OS and I'm limited to using IBM's Websphere J9 Virtual Machine. I'm new to using java in this capacity and therefore have lots of questions which I'm guessing are pretty basic. Despite my best efforts, I've found very little to help me online. Below are a couple questions I have that I'm hoping someone can help me with. Even better, if you know of any resources that could help me with these and other questions, I'd love to have them. Thanks in advance.
    1. I'm using standard AWT for the GUI but I'm having problems getting frames, dialogs, etc., to come up in anything less then full screen. setSize() and resize() have no effect, even if I extend the frame and override the setMinimumSize, setPreferredSize, setMaximumSize methods. What do I need to do to get a child window to appear in something less than full screen?
    2. I'd like to be able to add menu's to the buttom toolbar (with the keyboard) but have no idea how I would add something to it. Can someone point me in the right direction?
    3. When my application gets an iconified event I go ahead and call a System.exit() to exit the application. This doesn't kill the java VM though, which continues to run in the background (taking up plenty of memory). If I run my application using the J9w.exe so that it runs without the console, then not only does the VM continue to run, but I have no way to stop it (the running program list can't see it). Since each time I run my application it starts a new VM, it only takes a couple of times before I'm out of memory and have to do a soft reset of the PDA to make things right. Can I kill the VM when I kill my application?
    4. I learn best by looking at example code, but have been unable to find any code people are running on J9. I have the GolfScoreTracker installed and running on my PDA, but the jar file contains only the classes. Since it's supposed to be a demo, I had hoped that the source code would be included, is that hoping too much or is the source code available somewhere? In addition, if you know of any applications out there with available source code that are known to run well on a PocketPC J9 environment I'd appreciate the link.

    Hi there, I saw your questions, im currently developing a java pocket pc application as well and here's what i go so far:
    AWT seem to be hard to use on pocket pc, instead i recommend that you use SWT, which is a technology developed by eclipse. It's already installed on the eclipse plugins, you just need to download the jar and dll files for the pocket pc. They are available at: http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/index.php
    I assume that you already have the J9 working on your device. So you only need to copy the SWT.jar file and the swt-win32-3064.dll to the folder containing the .class files on your device.
    Now, on your java IDE(im using eclipse) Add the SWT.jar library to your project which should be on C:/eclipse/plugins/org.eclipse.swt.win32_3.0.2/ws/win32/swt.jar or something like taht depending on your eclipse root.
    Now you are ready to code some SWT, here is a sample program from Carolyn MacLeod, i modified a few things so it could run on the pocket pc but it's almost the same. Once you coded in eclipse run it, then copy the class file from your desktop to your device(There should be like 4 or 5 classes like sample.class, sample$1.class etc. copy all of them) where you put the jar and dll files(If program does not run you may try to rename the dll file for swt-win32-3050.dll instead of 3064.dll). Now after you have everything set up you need to create the lnk file in order to run the program. On your desktop create a new textfile and write the following on it:
    255#"\Archivos de Programa\J9\PPRO10\bin\j9w.exe" "-jcl:PPRO10" "-cp" "\My
    Documents\Java\swt.jar" ;\My Documents\Java" sample
    Paths depend on your install, and the place where you put your classes and jar file. path for j9w is usually "\Program Files\J9\PPRO10\bin\j9w.exe", and the last word should be the classname.
    Currently this form only displays an image on a canvas, click on the browse button and choose a pic and it will display on the canvas. Im trying to connect the form to an oracle database but no success yet on the device.
    Hope it helps, if you have any questions about the code or something, and I know the answer, please feel free to ask.

  • Question about createXAQueueSession()

    Hi,
    I have a question about createXAQueueSession() method in javax.jms.XAQueueConnection class.
    Followings are from the the JMS 1.1 API:
    createQueueSession
    public QueueSession createQueueSession(boolean transacted,
    int acknowledgeMode)
    throws JMSException
    Creates an XAQueueSession object.
    Specified by:
    createQueueSession in interface QueueConnection
    Parameters:
    transacted - usage undefined
    acknowledgeMode - usage undefined
    Returns:
    a newly created XAQueueSession
    Throws:
    JMSException - if the XAQueueConnection object fails to create an XA queue session due to some internal error.
    The signature says it returns QueueSession but the javadoc says it returns XAQueueSession.
    And XAQueueSession is not subclass of QueueSession.
    Can anybody clarify the meaning of this method?
    Thnaks.
    yaluruns from www.tmaxsoft.com

    I would say it means what you think it means and not what it says. It looks to me as if the programmer used the copy-and-paste antipattern when coding the two methods, and didn't fix the copied javadoc correctly.

  • Some generic  questions about JMF

    Hi, as new to JMF, I would like to ask some generic questions about JMF from this community
    Though including RTP stack, JMF is only compatible to old RTP draft, RFC1889. I know that Sun stopped developing/supporting JMF. What is the alternative solution for JAVA RTP implementation suitable for a serious SERVER project, not just a school-term project? Has anyone thought about that or may have already moved forward? Is that any commercial or more updated Java based RTP stack currently? I searched with google. Besides jrtp, a school project, and I could not find a nice one. Majority of RTPstack implementation is C/C++.
    My second question is if there is the performance analysis and comparison of JMF. I know that some client applications such as SIP-Communicator adopt JMF for media delivery. But it is for one user in one machine. I wonder if any server application has adopt JMF as media relaying layer.
    I appreciate any input from this community.

  • Question about PHP

    I am completely new to programming and have enjoyed Linux so much, that I would like to go into PHP next. Currently I am a University student with a dead end major (Russian Studies). I am looking to get a certificate in PHP over the course of this next year and to find a little better job with it than I could get with my current degree. I would do a Google search for this, however, I have come to like Arch and the community that surrounds it and wanted to know if any you fine web programmers out there, had any suggestions for free online courses in PHP or book that could be purchased. I was also wondering what a good PHP certification exam to take would be. I have seen the Zend exam and was considering doing a test prep for this after I learn a little more about PHP and SQL. Thank you for your help and suggestions!

    As  I said, to most people, taxonomy doesn't matter.  It does matter to other people, and I don't mean people like me who have these little pet peeves.
    It matters to people who know a lot of languages who need to know when to use what language.  There isn't a single programming or scripting language that can be everything, so it's important for people, mostly software engineers, to know taxonomy, so they can pick a language most optimal for what they need to get done.  Most of the time, when you're dealing with very complex systems.  Instead of using one language for the whole system, you'll find out you'll be using COBRA to handle hardware, C++ to handle interface and C to tie everything together or something like that.
    I mean when you're differentiating between an interpretted language (script) and a program, the issue is efficiency and speed.  No matter what you do, an interpretted language is inherently slower and less efficient than a programming language.  Even Java that is compiled, is compiled to Java Native Language or something like that, and requires the Java Virtual Machine to interpret it (that's why Java gets it's own branch).  I believe it's the fastest interpretted language, but how does it compare to a natively compiled program?  It's still slower.
    Even when you know you're going to use a programming language, you still have choices, because each programming language can be split into a high, middle, and low level language.  Reasons for using different levels are due to how quickly do you need to write the program, how portable does the program need to be, how easy should other people be able to read the program, does it need to have low level abilities such as handling memory directly.  Then there's also the question about how your program is going to flow.  Is it functional or object oriented?
    It's not so much an opionated matter when you think about it.  It's more along the lines of do you need this knowledge or not?  For most people, I'm willing to bet that's everybody who posts in this thread, that information is not important, they don't need to know it, because they handle very, very simple applications compared to the complex systems that do indeed require the programmer or scripter to know the difference.
    Actually, the difference between interpreted and compiled (and faux-compiled) languages is different from the difference between programming and scripting languages, interpreted languages can also be programming languages, and compiled languages can be scripting (although this happens very little and is really pointless and tedious to do )
    'Scripting' usually refers to code meant to extend upon a framework or program separate from the script itself, whereas 'programming' is creating applications that are on their own, separate applications, regardless of whether they're run though an interpreter at runtime. The difference is a bit vague, and you are right in that interpreted languages are often used for scripting, but it is not necessary, look at something like python, this can be used both as scripting for automating tasks quickly by using it's immense library, as well as for creating stand alone applications, which would be programming. (PHP is virtually always scripting, though)
    Either way I prefer the term 'coding'

  • CFC-Skeletons Question

    I have a question about the cfc-skeletons that are created as
    web service stubs for publishing web services via ColdFusion.
    What determines the casing of those filenames and of those
    containing folders? Does it use the actual filename of the CFC
    file, the displayname attribute in the CFCOMPONENT tag for the CFC,
    the casing of the URL for the WSDL, or is it using the casing that
    references it in code through other CFCs?
    What effect does restarting the CF app service have on those
    cfc-skeletons?
    The reason why I ask is that we've encountered some problems
    where our web services built from CFCs are getting errors when:
    1. The CF service is restarted
    2. The URLs for the WSDLs are referenced differently as it
    pertains to case, e.g "/cfComponents" vs. "/cfComPonents"
    3. Any code within the CFC references other CFCs and the
    casing is different or inconsistent throughout the CFC. e.g. some
    code might be instantiating another CFC as "cfComponents.Login" and
    other parts of the code within the same CFC might be instantiating
    that CFC as "cfComPonents.login".
    Also, I know that the cfc-skeleton structure that is
    generated is different in CFMX 6 than in CF7. Is the logic that
    auto-generates the skeleton in CFMX 6 the same as CF7?
    Thanks in advance.
    Rick...

    One consequence is, if you stored a component myComp.cfc in
    such a directory, you could instantiate it on any page simply by
    running
    <cfset myObj = createobject("component","myComp")>
    However, this doesn't offer anything a mapping wouldn't. So,
    in answer to the second question, I don't think one should use a
    custom tag path for components. Mixing one's custom tags with one's
    components only produces an oil-plus-water structure.

  • Question about how the Robocopy /B switch works...

    I've been experimenting with robocopy recently, and most switches seem self explanatory for the most part; although I have a question about the /B switch.
    The help says the following:
    /B :: copy files in Backup mode.
    I've checked multiple forums and websites to try and elaborate on this a little more, and from my understanding this switch enables backup mode that essentially gives the ability to change the acls of a file/folder when the account running robocopy does
    not have sufficient privileges, to perform a successful copy.
    My question is, when the acls are changed when using this "backup mode" switch, with the /copyall switch, will the file still retain the same user access that it originally had - or does it change all of the security settings?
    I'm hoping it will somehow change the security settings, create a copy, and retain the same acls as the original - so users can still access necessary files.
    Can someone please explain how this "backup mode" works?
    Thanks in advance.

    This is a very useful thread with a lot of hostility in it.
    I have to agree with Jonathan and hazymat: there are few other forums that will discuss the exact function of /b switch, the TechNet article just says "copies in Backup Mode" (I have the article bookmarked), and when doing a google search, THIS page comes
    up as the top result! Kinda difficult to tell people they should go search, when you are the exact destination of that search, isn't it? ;)
    No offense to anybody working hard to help out here, but this is why sites like Stack Exchange will overshadow every traditional tech forum very soon. More concise question/answer format, more civil, and they actually encourage old questions developing new
    answers! All q&a is cataloged for future reference. Their focus is on being a 'resource'.
    The negativity here is unfortunate, you guys have great potential to be a very helpful resource for people. Who are you trying to be, the guys with all the answers, or the guys who say "get out of here, your answer isn't in here. Go search for it."?
    Regardless, many thanks to jrv! for helping me with my robocopy batch SCRIPT which I just used to create an automated backup! Take care boys. And yes, I just bumped your old-old thread.
    Unfortunately I think you miss the point.  RoboCopy is an application.  It is not a script.  This is a scripting forum.  Many people come here nd never read the forum guidelines and do not ask script related questions.
    The /b switch is documented in RoboCopy help.  Of course it assumes the reader is a trained Windows tech and knows what backup mode is.  It is used by nearly all backup software when backing up a live system..
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Techie Question about iWeb, outbound links, and Google Analytics

    Hi,
    I have a kind of pretty technical question about using Google Analytics (GA) with iWeb sites to measure clicks on outbound links. Here's the setup:
    1) My website's online, and GA is working properly.
    2) I don't sell stuff directly, but I do have a "Purchase" page which contains a link to a specific Amazon page.
    3) I'm pretty sure I can measure how many people go to the Purchase page using GA, but how do I measure whether visitors click on the Amazon link? It would be interesting to me to be able to gauge what the conversion rate is; that is, how many people actually proceed to purchase the product at Amazon.
    I've checked the GA instructions and there's a page about manually tracking clicks on outbound links but it requires some code inputting. I know zero about coding, but I'm pretty sure that in iWeb you can't get access to the source code to input the required code.
    Am I wrong about this? And if I am, then does anyone here know how to measure the clickthrough rate?
    Anyway, hope you can help. Thanks in advance.

    I don't know about the link tracking but you could have the link take you to a redirect page which automatically sends them to Amazon.com after a preset time, 0 seconds to whatever you'd like. You can put a counter on that redirect page, like StatCounter. StatCounter can tell you how many, from where they came, i.e country and area, repeat visits, etc.
    Tutorials #12 & #13 describe how to put a visible counter on a page but with a redirect page you wouldn't have to bother since it wouldn't be seen. You can get all of your information from your account on the StatCounter site.
    The redirect page would be a simple plain text page titled redirect.html and would look like this:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
    "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="refresh"
    content="0; Destination URL">
    <title>Redirecting or whatever you'd like to appear at the top of the browser</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    </body>
    </html>
    0 Is the number of seconds to wait before redirecting the visitor. If set to zero the visitor would not know they were being redirected. Replace Destination URL with the Amazon URL you want them to go to.

  • Question about the FRONT ROW REMOTE

    ok i have 2 questions about this remote.... i ordered a Mac Book Pro and am waiting for it....
    Well the 1st question is that has anyone use Powerpoint or Keynote with this remote. That would be great for keeping me mobile while giving my speeches...
    2nd. Is the IR "eye" in the computere sensitive to other products. Maybe a cell photo that has the obex all locked up (thanks VERIZON)....
    any info would be great
    steve

    Sorry to disappoint you but I don't think it is that kind of a remote. It seems to be designed strictly for audio/video software. I have tried it with both Keynote and PowerPoint and all it did was effect iTunes that was running in the background.
    As far as other IR devices; I aimed all the IR remotes I have and tried different buttons. Nothing happened. But things like TV remotes usually have to be coded to the specific devices you wish to have them operate. If you purchase a Universal Remote for your TV, DVD, VCR, etc., you have to tell it what the brand and model are, usually from a list of codes that come with the remote.

    I am an HP employee.

    My HP, purchased in June 2012, died on Saturday.  I was working in recently installed Photoshop, walked away from my computer to answer the phone and when I came back the screen was blank.  When I turned it on, I got a Windows Error Recovery message.  The computer was locked and wouldn't let me move the arrow keys up or down and hitting f8 didn't do anything.
    I'm not happy with HP.  Any suggestions?
