Challenges exporting clips

Using Prel 7
HD images from a Canon Vixia HV30
Use HDV split to brek them into managable files.
Import into Premiere El  project (NTSC 1080) by adding files from hard drive.  They come in as MPEG files
Image quality is good  . . .the files perform on the timeline as I'd expect.
I'm compiling lots of assets for this project, so I need to edit down the clips further.  This is the workflow I've used for past projects (not HD) in prior versions of PrEl.   May have a two minute clip of which I only need 20 seconds (and only want the smaller file on my drive).
So, I use "export movie"  ctrl+m.  Set it to only export the work area.
Thing IS  . .    I cannot seem to figure out the format  "file type" to use.  I've tried most of them   ...  when I pull the resulting clips into the project they're not right   . . .   either cropped with letter boxes, or stretched,  and in all cases the image quality is lousy.
All ideas are appreciated !!
Thanks

To expedite matters, I am going to assume that your Canon HV30 is delivering NTSC HDV 1080i (60 fields per second, 30 frames per second), MPEG-2, file extension assumed .mpeg.
You would select the Premiere Elements 7 project preset (new project dialog) = NTSC HDV HDV 1080i30. The description includes frame size = 1440 x 1080 and HD Anamorphic to stretch the video to 16:9 on display after encoding.
Two major considerations relating to what you see in the Edit Mode Monitor
A. Monitor Magnification Setting, Fit or 100%, and here I am not talking about the popular topic of quality; I am talking about how the video fits the template in the Monitor.
B. If you have checked or unchecked “Default Scale to Frame Size” in Edit Menu/Preferences/General.
Another major consideration is the default settings that you are going to see in File Menu/Export/Movie when you are using the Premiere Elements 7 project preset (new project dialog) = MTSC HDV HDV 1080i30. It is not going to be DV AVI with a file extension of .avi and with a frame size of 720 x 480 standard or widescreen. It is going to be:
File Extension = .mpeg
File Type = Compiler MPEG Proxy
Compressor = I-Frame Only MPEG
Frame Size will be that of the project preset (new project dialog) 1440 x 1080, and the description will include HD Anamorphic for 16:9.
This generalization holds for the other AVCHD and HDV choices. If you had used the project preset (new project dialog) = NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080i30, you would see essentially the same thing, major exceptions being, frame size 1920 x 1080 and square pixels.
All should be right with the world if you are setup as above and are using your HDV footage. You have confirmed that. Now when it gets to this non HDV footage, what exactly do you have? DV AVI 720 x 480 standard or widescreen or some other video format with a 720 x 480 frame size? Graphics? Let us just focus on a video file with frame size 720 x 480 that you bring into this Premiere Elements 7 project set up for HDV. What is the intent of the export with Work Area Bar technique…to save as a later addition to HDV project (1440 x 1080/HD Anamorphic) or to save as a DV AVI (720 x 480 standard or widescreen)? If it is the latter, then you would change default .mpeg setting to DV AVI in the File Menu/Export/Movie route.
But, if you want to use the export for insertion into this HDV project, then I would suggest:
1. With your project preset as above
2. Monitor Magnification on Fit
3. Edit Menu/Preferences/General/”Default Scale to Frame Size” unchecked
4. Scale your 720 x 480 to fit the Frame Size of the Template
5. Then do your File Menu/Export/Movie (default .mpeg settings) with your WorkArea Bar technique.
Then there should not be any surprises when you re-import the export.
I have not looked at this for quality, especially related to re-coding then or later, that is, .mpeg vs .avi export, so you could also look at export with setting for Microsoft AVI (not Microsoft DV AVI), setting frame size 1440 x 1080, video compression = none, HD anamorphic.
That is my thinking on the matter. Please check it out to make sure that I did not go off in the wrong direction and off the deep edge on this one.

  • Why is file size of exported clip so large?

I have a movie clip in MPEG-4 format, 3 minutes in duration, 720x400. I ripped it (using Handbrake) from a DVD I own. Let's call this clip Clip A. I wanted it to be smaller, so I used Quicktime Pro 6.5.2 to export it. Let's call the exported clip Clip AE (E for exported). Clip AE has these properties:
    Compression: Sorenson Video 3
    Quality: High
    Frame rate: 15
    Width x Height: 310 x 200
    Sound format: QDesign Music 2
    Sample rate: 22,050 kHz
    Channels: Mono
    File Size: 5.5 MB
Great. That's just what I wanted. Now I go to a second movie clip I have in MPEG-4 format. This Clip B is only 90 seconds in duration, 720x400. I export it to Clip BE. Clip BE has these properties:
    Compression: Sorenson Video 3
    Quality: High
    Frame rate: 15
    Width x Height: 310 x 200
    Sound format: QDesign Music 2
    Sample rate: 22,050 kHz
    Channels: Mono
    FILE SIZE: 25.8 MB
In both exports I set the Key Frame Rate and Data Rate to automatic. So, everything is the same except Clip BE, which is half as long in duration as Clip AE, is 5 times larger in file size.
I'm no expert at using QT Pro, but this result just does not make sense to me. Why is the second exported clip 5 times larger than the first one. I wanted to email both of them to my wife at work as a little surprise, but the second one is way too big for my email account. How can I get the file size of that second clip down to the size of the first one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
iMac G5, iBook (dual USB) G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The second clip probably has more detail or motion than the first.
Open Clip AE and choose "Get Info." Note the data rate of the video.
Now export clip B again, but instead of setting the data rate to automatic, set it to the same number as Clip AE's data rate.
You will lose video quality, but the file should come out smaller.

  • The periphery of the picture on the clip is cropped? Smaller on the exported clip?

When I take a clip to the project liberary it becomes cropped and the periphery of the exported clip is cropped, can you help please?
    Thank you

This is probably the Image Stabilization, which works by zooming in.
You can turn it off by clicking the little gear icon in your project clip and going to the Clip tab of the Inspector. Turn off image stabilization, or reduce the zoom level.

  • Exporting Clips for use in another application

I want to export clips from Final Cut Pro X version 10.1.1 retain the clips in Final Cut and be able to use the clips in premiere.  Any ideas.

I copied the entire Final Cut library from one hard drive to another before trying the consolidate function.  I used the consolidate function and ingested the media copies into Adobe Prelude and backed that up to another hard drive.  I am at the beginning of making a documentary which has turned into a huge project.  I am working across platforms but have decided the end product will be in Adobe Premiere.  I have decided this because many of the people I am working with being editors and graphic designers work with Adobe products.  I like Final Cut Pro X but people in the industry have reacted against it thus forcing these decisions.

  • Why is the SmoothCam (smooth cam) filter not applying to an exported clip?

I have a clip that required some masking (which my graphics guy did on his PC). After importing the masked clip into FCP, I can't get the SmoothCam filter to apply to it. SmoothCam works great on the original shot from the camera (an MXF file), but not on the clip after it was "tweaked outside" of FCP.
Does anyone know if SmoothCam has a limitation on what types of files it will work on (ie only raw footage files, MXF files, etc) or is there perhaps some metadata in the raw file that's needed for SmoothCam?
We had tried exporting a smoothed version before I gave it to him for masking but he couldn't open it on his PC (don't get me started on that! haha).
He did a wonderful job on the masking (using AfterEffects) but the clip still requires the SmoothCam. And SmoothCam is working just fine (I can still apply it on "raw" clips). But when I try to apply it to this "outside exported" clip, it just doesn't do anything...no error, no indication of analyzing the clip or even trying, nothing at all happens.

I apologize. I posted this question a little prematurely. After looking through the FCP manual, I found this quote:
+Note: The SmoothCam filter can be applied only to clips that refer to QuickTime+
+media files. Also, the SmoothCam filter compensates only for the original video+
+within a QuickTime media file; the results of filter and motion parameter settings are+
+ignored. Make sure filters applied to a clip are ordered so that the SmoothCam filter+
    +is applied first.+
I decided to post this reply in case anyone else came across this issue. Basically, it appears that SmoothCam will only work on QuickTime files (.mov I guess?). My graphics guy had made the file as an MP4 (again..don't get me started I opened the his MP4 in QT and re-exported it as a .mov and SmoothCam is analyzing it right now! So all is well.
Sorry for the almost unnecessary post. Feel free to comment to expand/clarify my findings.
    Thanks!

  • Exporting clips from one file

I am trying to export clips in Quicktime format onto a cd for someone else to edit.
I imported a sequence from FCE that appeared as one clip in iMovie 06. I split the clips. There are 32 separate clips now. I need to copy these onto a cd so that someone else can edit them into a movie. When I tried copying them, the clips appeared as one file NOT 32 separate clips.

.. a bit exotic, that workflow.. ? why not using FCE for that task..
    in iM:
select/'highlight' the clip, goto export, check the box 'selected clips only', choose FullQuality or whatever quality.. done.
note: a CD fits 3secs of dv.. probably a dataDVD is better, an external Harddrive best practice..

  • How can I export clip markers?

Is there any way to export clip markers? When I export to a QuickTime movie and select All Markers neither my timeline nor my clip markers are visible when I bring the exported clip into Final Cut or Compressor.

Both of my markers are chapter markers and I have selected "All Markers", but when I bring the exported clip into Final Cut I see no markers.

  • Batch Exporting Clips from timeline in Final Cut Pro X

So ive looked at many forums and many sources and I know this isn't the first time this question has been asked.....but I was
wondering how I would be able to batch export clips from the timeline (about 100 or so) to use as Content for VJing (live media manipulation). Is there a simple way to acomplish this in Final Cut Pro X... I have heard remours that you can cut multiple clips in Quicktime Pro 7 but im not sure how eficiant this is, I also have heard that this is allot easier to acomplish in Final Cut Pro 7. If anybody knows a simple (and quick way) to acomplish this Im all ears!

If you want to batch export parts of your project, I believe that you'd better served by an external utility, like QTCoffee. Export your movie to Quicktime, and then use QTCoffee to create the various bits in one, er... batch.

  • Exporting clips for Powerpoint

I'm trying to export clips to use in a Powerpoint presentation which I thought would be relatively straightforward to do but I'm having trouble with the whole exporting thing..!
Could anybody guide me on what I need to be exporting the clips as because when I tried it the first time and took the files over on a cd to the PC, it didnt recognise them. Do I export from just Quicktime or should I be doing the Quicktime conversion? And do I need to have a certain type of Quicktime Player available on my PC or can it be played from my Windows Media Player?
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Cheers x

    hi
thanks for your suggestions. I do have QuickTime installed on my PC and so far I have tried to export them as avi files but when I put it on the PC, an error came up saying 'a codec is required to play this file' (on Windows Media Player). I've just been reading up on some stuff about codecs and file formats on the web and manual but it's a little confusing..!
how would I transcode them to MPEG-1? Also, when the WMP failed to play the clip I tried to open it with the QuickTime Player - it came up but the image quality was quite reduced and there didnt appear to be any sound..is there something else I should be doing with my video sequences before I export them?
thanks again for your help! you might be able to tell I'm pretty new to all of this!

  • How to export clips to After Effects for Compositing

I want to export clips from my timeline into After Effects to add some compositing of clouds and sky replacement.
    FCP 7
    AE CS5
    OS 10.6.8
I dragged the clips from my timeline back into the Browser into a new bin but when I export from there, the dimensions aren't the same as my project.
My project is 1920x1080 and when I export the edited (spliced) clips from the browser, they're 720.
I don't want to go into my raw files and try and eyball where I spliced the clips b/c each video file is about 2 gigs and I'm only using a small section of each clip.
Any suggestions on how to do this?

It is much easier just to use Automatic Duck's Pro Import AE which will allow you to send your timeline to AE.
AE will use the existing media that is called for by the FC timeline, you don't have to copy/export the media files.
Used to cost several hundred dollars, now FREE as the creator has gone to work for Adobe.

P.S. The site says it is compatible up to CS5.5 which was current when development was stopped, but I use it in CS6 with no problem.

  • Exporting Clip In/Out (CS6)

    Hi,
Wondering if anyone else is having similiar issue as I am. It's not the end of the world but I do think it's some type of bug issue with CS6 (or maybe I'm doing something wrong).
Without boring you with too many details, part of my workflow includes using Premiere to not only create discs and final products for clients, but also supplying them with a data file copy of their content. When I start a project I set in and out points for my clips and then export the raw clips as compressed files (usually .mov or .mp4). When exporting from CS6 it seems easy enough, I simply select the clip I want to export, choose my export settings and set the "source range" to "clip in/out". Simply enough.
Only one problem, even though the clip in/out visibly changes in the clip window and everything looks like it should work, the exported files never have the in/out points. The resultant exported file is always simply the full clip, as if I never set the source range to clip in/out. Other than that the files look fine and everything else is great.
As a work around I've been simply putting the clips into their own sequences and obviously that solves the problem. I'm just curious if anyone knows the story on this issue. It's not really a big deal, solving the issue would just save me a step and it seems like it's broken at the moment so I thought I would mention it.
I don't think my system and so forth plays a big role in this issue as it's simply a basic function of Premiere but I'm on a MacPro OSX 10.6 with CS6 from Creative Cloud. I've experienced this issue with a variety of different source material and export settings and it's the same problem across the board.
    Thanks

Ok, took the same small clip and exported it twice (with my clip in/out set in Premiere and with "clip in/out" selected in the "source frame" in the export settings). Exported via queue into AME, the exported file did not have my in/out points it was merely the full clip that I had selected. Exported via Premiere (clicked Export instead of Queue), viola the exported file had the in/out points correct.
It would appear, based on this small test, that the reason my exported clips have been ignoring the in/out points has to do with going from Premiere into AME. Anyone else care to test this theory and tell me if they experience the same issue?

  • Export Clip information for Log Sheet

Has anyone tried to export Clip information into excel? In FCP7 I'd export a Batch List and then import into excel. We have over 2,000 clips logged into CS6 and would like the information in an outside document for our director and assistant editors.
    Thanks.

I don't know of any way to get that info out.

  • Show markers on exported clip

How can I show markers (specifically edit/cut markers) in an exported clip. I know they exist because they show up in compressor, however I cannot get them to show in fcp when I reimport the clip? any suggestions?

You can't. Those markers only show up when you send to Compressor. They're not actually markers on the exported file. Compressor is actually calling those up from the FCP sequence. They're not markers like chapter markers. FCP doesn't read chapter markers either BTW. Those are for DVD applications.

  • How to Choose File format of Exported Clip

I needed a clip from my movie for use in Live Type so I created Sub Clip from a longer duration clip and then exported it as QT movie. Or I thought I was doing that but the only choice of format I was given was .dv. How do you choose .mov or other format from the Export to QT menu choice?

    Hi(Bonjour)
Set in and out points in timeline (after your subclip was placed in it).
Choose export to quicktime with conversion. Select mov, and under video, select animation codec.
