Change application's icons in Openbox

Hi,
I'm trying to change the icons of some common applications since three hours now. I set the icon-theme using lxappearance. It works for system icons like folders or different filetypes. But I remember, that the icons of applications like firefox or thunderbird changed too when i used one of the nuoveXT icon themes.
Is there a way to tell openbox and tint2 to use the themes icons?

lxappearance controls the GTK settings. You just set the gtk icon-theme. Openbox does not have any bindings to GTK. I'm not sure which icons you are refering to, do you mean the icons in the menu you get when middle-clicking on the desktop? Or do you mean the icons in the applications themselves?
Applications get to set their own icon. Many programs will use a function call that makes sure it gets the icon from the users icon-theme, or a default icon in case it doesn't exist. However, the Mozilla programs don't use this function, they just select a fixed icon.
Then there is WM-specific menus. Openbox does not support icons in the "right-click" menu, but in the "middle-click" menu it will just grab whatever icon the program set for itself. Other WMs do it differnetly, GNOME for example: Its menus display .desktop files located at /usr/share/applications, and those .desktop files can specify an icon name that will be looked up in the users icon-theme. That explains how your icon theme affected the icon shown in the GNOME menu (assuming that's what you used to use) but not the icon in the panel or in the window title.

  • Changing application's icon does not work

    Hi,
I'm trying to change the icon for an application on my Mac (the app is GTPlayerExpress by DSound), but am having no luck.
If I try to copy an icon from another file to the application's icon.
File ⌘+I to get the file info. Select the file icon. ⌘+C to copy the icon. Application ⌘+I to get the application info. Select the application's icon. ⌘+V to paste. But nothing happens.
If I do it the other way round, though, it's ok. I can copy the application's icon to the file's icon. But it never works the other way round, the way I need.
    What am I doing wrong?
(the application has all read&write permissions for me and is not running. Do I need to modify something inside the application package, perhaps?)
    Thanks for any advice!

    Hi family cat,
download either Cocktail or OnyX and reset the "Launch Services database". After a restart you should see the new icons.

    Hi,
You have to specify the icon inside the application tag, not
    inside fileTypes/fileType.
Make sure the size of the icon is exactly what is being
    specified.

  • How do I change application/dock/desktop icons?

I recently downloaded a set of icons I'd like to replace my current icons on my desktop/dock. However, I'm having some problems. I've searched for the process to switch them I'm aware that you have to go to the Command+i option, copy the icon in the left, then go to what you want to switch and paste it to the icon in the left there. However, I think I might be having a problem changing it to the icon because after I get the info window open, the icon in the left is not the actual icon I'm trying to change it to. It looks like this:
Instead of changing to the icon/picture I want, it changes to the identification of a .png/.ico image.
Am I making any sense? And if so, can someone please help?

I don't think I am exactly sure of your problem, but I'll comment anyway. The procedure for changing an icon is, kindof, how you have described it; select the item with the icon you want to use and choose Get Info. Then select the icon in the Get Info window, by clicking on it once (in the upper left). This will cause an outline to appear around it. Then select Copy from the edit menu. Now select the item you want to change and repeat that same procedure, except, select Paste from the Edit pull down menu, in place of Copy, after you have selected the icon in the Get Info window.
For changing System icons, you'll need something like CandyBar.

  • I have the problem that other have had, PDFs changing to Firefox icons

All my PDFs had changed to Firefox icons and when trying to open them only the Firefox browser page appeared and I could not locate my files. Uninstalling Firefox worked fine, my files returned. One person mentioned imported profiles from an old computer being a cause but I was working on a new laptop with nothing imported from old equipment. I only installed Firefox because of small irritaing annoyances with Google Chrome, but those were only minor after the problems caused by Firefox. An extra couple of clicks is nothing compared with having lots my files messed up and inaccessible. None of the solutions proposed seemed particlarly useful long term so for the present not using Firefox seems the most practical cure. My difficulties occured on a laptop using Windows 7, I am typing this question on an even newer laptop with Windows 8.1 and I am now reluctant to try installing Firefox on this machine. It is a shame as my daughter always recommended Firefox as being a more secure browser.

If Firefox detects via a registry scan that there is currently no file handler application that handles PDF files and a few other file types then the Firefox updater/installer registers Firefox as the default application to handle these file types.
This causes them to show with a Firefox icon on the desktop and in other places like Windows Explorer (Bug 452254).

  • Change date help icon inside table

    Hello,
I've created a new theme and I've changed the date help icon(Theme Editor/Simple Elements/Labels and Fields). I can see new icon in portal but when displaying it from a cell inside a table, it displays the standard icon. Please, I need to show just our date help icon and not the standard one. It should have changed all date icons from our WD java application.
In addition, it happens the same with paginator. I've modified the Complex element: Paginator and all tables display my colours except for UWL paginator. Why UWL table is not showing the proper colours?
    Thank you.

I think rather than trying some quirks, you are better off opening a message with SAP.
    Thanks

  • Change the mouse icon.

Hi all I need to change the mouse icon.
    I'm using:
    setCursor(Cursor.WAIT_CURSOR);
buet the problem is that this only works inside the application. If the mouse cursors does out of the application (f.e. to the windows desk) the mouse changes into the typical arrow icon.
What I need is the mouse icon to remain as a sand-watch icon till some opperations are done in the application.
    Thanks in advance.
    Dani.

I believe this behaviour is controlled by the operating system. This is part of the pre-emptive multi-tasking system, the principle being that one busy application should not disrupt the rest of the OS (compare with Win 3.1).
So I don't think you can do that, and even if you can, you probably shouldn't

  • [SOLVED] KDE Panel - Application Launcher Icon Size

With the standard KDE panel, when I add an application launcher widget (it doesn't matter which one) the icon size of the launcher is too small. Increasing the size of the panel makes the icon get bigger to a point, but then it shrinks again. Is there a config file that I can override the icon size? I don't see one in ~/.kde4/share/config, is that the right place to look?
Last edited by ioos (2012-05-16 18:22:06)

That was it! The "Panel" setting only changed the launcher icon. I guess I assumed that it would change all of the icon sizes, but so far it looks good. Thanks!

  • Using Custom Icons - Changing the Finder Icon

So I know you can just do a simple copy and paste under "get info" in order to change icons for applications and folders, but how do you do this for Finder? I know this is possible, if not for the simplest reason that one of the downloads that Apple has featured on this site for icons has a Finder icon (bad logic I know, but it seems odd that Finder would be the only icon you couldn't change). The problem is, how do you "Get Info" on Finder? Where would you find finder (no pun intended)?
    Thanks in Advance

Thanks for the help in finding the icon, the only problem is that it won't let me alter it. I even changed permissions on the bottom of the "get info" screen to allow the current user (also the administrator) to both read and write, but it wouldn't let me paste a different styled icon over it. Any suggestions on how to change the Finder icon to a custom one? And ya we were thinking about how we would change it back too, but realized its not really that big of an issue because all our friends and even we have multiple macs, so we could always just copy it back that way.

  • In downloading an application, an icon called "Speech Feedback" has popped up on my desktop. and I can't get rid of it. It will not be trashed, and I can't find the app. among my applications.

After downloading an application, an icon called "Speech Feedback" has appeared on my desktop.  I do not want it and can not get rid of it. Please help.

Go  to System Preferences and click the Speech icon . When the next screen opens look in the upper portion of that screen for "Speakable Items". Change the setting from "On" to "Off". Now the icon of the desktop should disappear. If not, restart your MacBook Pro.

  • Changing the folder icon

I'm trying to change the folder icon for the Pictures folder. But, when I do, the Pictures icon on the left of the window also changes and becomes the same as the Pictures folder icon. I want the two of them to be different but can't seem to figure it out.

If you really want to get into it, changing application icons, most of them are separate .icns files within the application package.
For example, the Finder icon is
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/Finder.icns
When you select Finder.app-Ctrl-click and choose show package contents to dig further down.
Most of the other standard icons used by the Finder are in the same Resources folder.
If you install the Developer Tools package from the MacOS X Install DVD, you can use the Icon Composer to apply and save your own icons to pretty much anything.

  • Application Explorer icon location issue

I'm in the process of building new images (XP Pro SP3) that include
ZENworks Agent v7.0.1.4 (to address some policy application issues we're
    experiencing).
After imaging a machine, the Application Explorer icon is being
positioned on the right-hand side of the desktop. This differs from
7.0.1.0, for which the Application Explorer icon adheres to the "align
to grid" setting and happily lines up with all other desktop icons on
the left-hand side of the desktop. This is an issue as our background
bitmap contains a logo/image and other info in the 400 pixels on the
right... the Application Explorer icon gets lost if it's on that side.
Note that there are no app object icons on the desktop and there are
only 15 icons in total for the particular user I'm logged in as (incl.
the Application Explorer, Recycle Bin, IE and WMP) - 11 icons reside in
the users redirected desktop folder. I've done a side-by-side image
build with Agent v7.0.1.0 and v7.0.1.4 - no other changes. This only
happens with with the newer agent. The agent was installed fresh in both
    cases - not updated.
Thoughts? This is holding up image development at this point.
    What I have observed is:
-login as my non-volatile test user, app explorer is on the right (I can
do this repeatedly and it stays on the right)
-logout and temporarily move the users icons from the users redirected
    Desktop
-login and App Explorer tucks itself nicely under the IE icon on the
left... *but* I first see the icon appear on the right before it's
    magically repositioned on the left!
-logout and put the icons back in the users redirected Desktop
-login and App Explorer remains on the left!
I'm imaging two machines right now so I can do some more side-by-side
    testing... hopefully identify something...

  • Can I change the Firefox icon permanently?

I've been trying to change the Firefox/Nightly icons to a custom icon that will show in the taskbar. I've tried using resource hacker to fix it, but after I restart my computer or wait long enough the changes will disappear and the icons will go back to normal.
The icon for the firefox.exe in the programs will change to the icons I want once I use resource hacker, but when I turn my computer back on they go back to the default ones. Is there a way to change the icon "permanently" and still be able to change it back when I want it back?
    Thanks.

Change it as you would any taskbar icon:
    # Right-click the Nightly icon on the taskbar.
    # In the menu that pops up, right-click Nightly and choose Properties.
    # In the Properties window, click the Shortcut tab.
    # Click the Change Icon button, select your custom icon and click the OK button.
    # Click the OK button to close the Properties window.
    # If Nightly is currently running, you'll may need to exit and restart it for the change to take effect.
There's a way to change the application icon in Firefox, but it won't affect much. If you've already done the above, then in current versions of Windows it'll probably only affect the icon shown in the Alt+Tab application switcher.
Name your icon ''main-window.ico'' and place it in the following folder. The folder doesn't exist by default and must be created manually.
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Nightly\browser\chrome\icons\default
Don't tamper with any Firefox installation files, the executable in particular.

  • Application folder icon

The Application folder icon used to be the default one.  But after I installed Adobe Reader, the Adobe icon appears on top of the default in the dock.  When I open the App folder and check Get Info, the icon shown there is the default one.  How do I remove the Adobe icon from appearing on top of the default Application icon?  Thanks.

Control-click its Dock icon and change the options as desired.
