Change folder privileges in Automator.

is there a way to change the privileges of a specified folder and all enclosed contents of that folder to 'Read & Write' through Automator in Mac OS X 10.5.x?

Why? All you need do is select the folder then Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Ownership and Sharing section set your desired privileges.
To do this via Automator I'm fairly sure you would need to run a terminal script. I am not sure if that's an available action in the Leopard version of Automator. But you could create an AppleScript that uses the "do shel script" command to run the terminal commands. The terminal commands would likely be:
chown -R yourusername:staff "/Path/To/FolderName"
The above command changes the folder's ownership to you with read/write privileges as well as the contents of the folder. The above command assumes you already have admin access to the folder in question.
If you only want to change the privileges without making any other changes to ownership then you would instead use the command:
chmod -R 755 "/Path/To/FolderName"
The quotes around the path are required if there are any spaces or special characters in the pathname or foldername.

  • 10.7.5 New Folder Privileges are Read Only

I have a 2.8G Quad-Core running 10.7.5 with dual Hard drives; a Mac HD and a Data Drive.  I share the Data Drive with two other Macs running 10.5.8.
Whenever I create a new folder on either the Mac HD or the Data Drive I get R&W privileges for my user account, and Read only for the other accounts.  I've used the 'get info' command to change all privileges for individual folders to R&W for all users, and used the gear to 'apply to enclosed items' to the entire drive, but files across multiple applications are still opening as Read Only.
Here is some more details for full disclosure;  The Data Drive used to be in one of the other shared computers and I didn't have any problems until recently moving the Data Drive over to the 'new machine' with 10.7.5
When I create a new folder locally I get R&W for "csp2 (me)" and Read Only for 'staff' and 'everyone'
When I create a new folder on the Data Drive from the shared machines I get R&W for 'nobody' and Ready only for 'admin' and 'everyone'
All these drives should be open and not have any access privileges. Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you.

  • On change folder action

Hello, Is there an "On Change" folder action? This would be very useful for many things.
    thnaks, Eli

    On change of what?
The trigger for a Folder Action is a change in the folder.

  • Relinking changed folder name

I am in need of a script that will, when prompted to relink broken links, update the path of a changed folder name.
So no matter where the "old file name (X)" is in the link path, it will be updated to "New folder name (Y)"
Also I now very little about scripts so if anyone knows a simplified website that explains how to utilize them that would also be super helpful.
    Thanks!

Check out the Links section on this page. Probably you you will find something close to your needs.

Can I change folder icons on my 5s?

What folders? If you mean the folders you can create to organise apps, then no, those icons are automatically generated from the icons of the apps inside the folder.

  • Finder automatically changing folder names...

Finder is automatically changing folder names... say I have two folders side by side titled:
    Financial
    Miscellaneous
Sometimes, and for no apparent reason, the "financial" folder will, when I click on it, change to "miscellaneous" and will show the exact same files no matter which one of the two I click on. I know for a fact that each folder holds two entirely different sets of documents...
What is going on here? How do I stop it from doing this?

We are experiencing this issue on both ppc and intel machines and it appears to be isolated to the Finder as the terminal reports properly. The commonality is network shares, it does not seem to matter if they are nfs automounted from solaris, smb mounted from a linux box, etc etc, nor does it matter if an admin user manually mounts these shares, the issue persists. I, like a previous poster on this subject was skeptical given the symptoms but kept an open mind and then witnessed this anomaly for myself. We can now re-create it at will. I have narrowed it down to the 10.4.9 update and it continues through 10.4.10, in my testing, the issue does not exist in 10.4.8. The Finder version changes from 10.4.6 in OSX version 10.4.8 to Finder version 10.4.7 in OSX version 10.4.9, the Finder versions do not coincide with OS versions. Swapping in the older Finder did not solve the issue so there are other culprits involved. It may not even be the Finder at issue, the issue may reside in the way OSX mounts shares and simply manifests in the Finder. Odd behavior to say the least, one good thing is that while the data appears to have gone away, it's actually safe and sound and a reboot/logout-login resolves the issue. Deleting .DS_Store, force re-launching the Finder does not seem to help nor does deleting caches, preferences, etc, the only solution I have found is to revert to 10.4.8.

  • Mac OS wont let me change folder icons

I recently tried to change folder/hard disk icons on my mac and have had no luck since the Copy/Paste tabs in the edit menu are grayed out once i open the get info box. I am logged in as a admin so i dont know why i am having this issue...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance! :-D

Hmm, strange. Just to make sure you are doing it right. You copy an image to the clipboard. You open "get info" panel for the folder. You select the small folder icon in the top left corner. You paste the image there. Is this the procedure you are using?

  • CHANGED FOLDER NAME IN FINDER- NOW IPHOTO CANT FIND FILE

I was trying to organize my iphoto files through the finder. So I renamed and grouped similar files. Now the photos cannot be found in iphoto.
How do I reset the folder settings?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The point of iPhoto is that you do all your work in the iPhoto Window. It does the work in the background.
Then if you need the files to upload somewhere or for some other reason:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    Regards
    TD

  • HT1449 how do I change access privileges?

I successfully transferred my iTunes library to my new laptop however I cannot save any new addutiond to my library and a window keeps popping up saying I don't have enough access privileges.  Can anybody advis eme what to do? Thanks .

  • Changing Folder Permissions after upgrading to Leopard

I just upgraded to Leopard and previously while being logged into the computer as admin, I was able to set "no access" permissions to specific folders.
I always thought this was a waste of time, regardless, I was able to do it and now can not.
Under "Get Info_Sharing & Permissions" for the specific folder, there are three groups available...admin(me), (unknown) and everyone. Everyone is the only selection that gives me the option to set "no access." "no access" is not available for the other two; admin and unknown.
When logged in under another profile (which is NOT listed under "Get Info_Sharing & Permissions" of this file) when I select "no access" under "everyone" of this file, I immediately see the icon change to a folder with a red minus symbol. It can't be accessed when double clicking. It says you don't have enough access privileges. This is what I'm looking to replicate under the admin profile. Something I could do before.
Am I missing something new in Leopard. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey I've only had a brief moment at home to verify the problems you are having. Honestly I haven't put much thought in to it. But, in the meantime, while I try and think of why this is, if you aren't too uncomfortable going into the Terminal you can do this from the commandline fairly easily.
Assuming you want no access for "Everyone", open Terminal.app and type:
"chmod 750 " (without quotes and ensuring you have the trailing space).
Now, drag the file or folder you want to grant no access to onto the terminal window. Its path should show up and now you can press enter and now Everyone won't be able to read or write to this folder.
If you want to get rid of any access for Everyone and the group that owns the file/folder, then do the same as above but instead of "chmod 750..." do "chmod 700 ..."
Hope this helps until I can get a GUI fix going.

  • Can't retrieve folder privileges for a specific user

I am trying to get the granted privilege for a specified user for a certain folder. I am using the wwsec_api.get_granted_user_privilege function. When I run my code, nothing is ever returned. Here is my code:
    l_priv_varchar := wwsec_api.get_granted_user_privilege(
    p_user_id => 0,
    p_object_type_name => 'FOLDER',
    p_name => '2889');
    p_user_id is from wwsec_person.id$
    p_object_type_name is my object type
    p_name is from wwv_corners.id
I have looked at the properties of this folder and this user, 0, is set up as the owner. So I am expecting to see 'OWN' returned. I have another user set up to only VIEW the folder and when I put that user's id into the p_user_id parameter I still do not get any return. I can run this same code (with different parameter values) and get the privileges for a 'PAGE', but never for a FOLDER.
Does anyone have this problem or can tell what I am missing?
    Thanks.
    null

p_name for a folder is "sitename/parentfolder/foldername". You can see that in the syspriv_name field on the WWV_CORNERS table.

  • Blank form from trusted folder/privileged location with enhanced security

    See http://superuser.com/questions/459138/adobe-reader-not-loading-form-content
When opening an fdf from a command line the form fields are blank even though there is data in the fdf and the pdf is located in a mnaully entered trsuted folder.
    Steps to reproduce:
Clean install a Windows 7 PC (or use a virtual box)
Map a network drive to a shared folder with a subfolder e.g. c:\test\docs becomes m:\docs
Set security permissions to allow full control to everyone
Add an fdf and a matching pdf file in the subfolder
Manually add m:\docs to each of the trusted folders in the trust manager registry settings
Ensure that Enhanced Security is on
Run a command line to open the fdf file
    Expected result:
pdf is opened in Adobe Reader with form fields filled out with data
    Actual results:
pdf is opened with blank fields
'Yellow bar' appears asking to add document to trusted locations
It appars that Adobe Reader XI is ignoring the privileged locations entries in the registry. Adding the document via the 'yellow bar' adds the individual document, with the same folder, to the privileged locations but means that the process has to be repeated for every document that needs to be opened from the folder.
Note that I've submited this as a bug but had no reply.

  • Changing folder icons issue

I'm suddenly having a problem in snow leopard (mac os x 10.6.8) that I haven't had before in older versions. When I use copy and paste to change a folder's icon, the folder then contains an 'icon exec' file that I do not want there. If I trash it, the icon on the folder gets trashed as well. Anyone know how I can change the icon without having to now include that 'icon exec' file in the folder? Thanks.

Just rebooted into 10.6.8 to see if its behavior was any different than 10.7.2, which I now use most of the time.
No change - in Lion or Snow Leopard, when I added a custom icon to a folder, an invisible file was added to the folder's contents. This file is named just "icon" with no extension, and does not display the exec icon - it displays the generic blank page with turned-down-corner icon. I used FileBuddy to do the looking, since invisibles are visible to it.
The icon I used as a source was one derived from a JPEG image. I opened the image in Preview, did a Command-A (select all) to select the entire image, then Command-C (copy) to place it on the clipboard, then did a Get Info on the folder's icon and pasted (Command-V) the image onto the icon in the upper left.
Perhaps the difference stems from the nature of the source image you are using?

  • Changing folder icons

I know this has been brought up, but I have a slightly different problem.
I can highlight, copy, and paste the images I want onto the folders, but all that ever shows up on the Get Info window is a generic image preview, not the icon I want to copy.
I have 'Show icon preview' in the view options checked, but all it does is give me the icon image on the desktop, not on the Get Info window.
When I tried to get around this by copying the icon from Preview, the folder has a black box around it. There is no black box around the icon anywhere else, only when I use it as a folder image.
This is what I'm dealing with:
Is there any way for me to get around this completely? Buying software is not an option.

    *How to change icons*
To do so, highlight the icon........
    Hold down the Option Key......
    Go to File>Get Info......
In the existing window, click the existing icon, and then choose Edit>Copy
Next, click the icon to which you want to transfer the copied icon. Its icon now appears in the Info dialog box that’s still open on the screen.
Click the icon in the dialog box, and this time choose Edit>Paste.
Viola!!!!! You now have a new icon.
Or you can download this easy to use simple shareware program called CandyBar. This easy to use piece of software is also less time consuming.
