Change Word & Excel Settings for ALL FUTURE USERS

We have a computer lab in which each student has his/her own login.  They use Word and Excel 2010 in the classroom.  There are several settings that the teacher likes to set for his students, but currently he must log in to all 120 of the student
accounts and set the settings.  A summary of those settings is:
Change default font size to 12
Change paragraph to single spacing with no space after text
Add items to the quick launch bar at the top of the screen
I'm working on setting up a new computer for imaging for him.  Is there any way for me to make these setting changes globally, so that each student gets the correct settings when they log on for the first time?

Hi,
For Word, the custom font is customized via the Normal.dotm template, located at %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Templates. Navigate to this location, right click on the template and choose Open. On the Home tab, in the Font group select the font of your choice, then
right click on the editing area, click Paragraph and select single spacing and other settings you need to configure, click OK then save the file.
For Excel, the font is customized via a registry key:
Important
This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the
registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry,
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Back-up-the-registry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Excel\Options
Name: Font
Type: REG_SZ
Value: Arial,12
After we define the Word template and changed the Excel Font registry key, we need to deploy it globally via an MSP file:
1. Create a customization .msp file using the Office Customization Tool: drag and drop the
setup.exe of the Office installation source in the Run box, and pass it the switch
/admin
2. This will open OCT (Office Customization Tool)
3. Select the first option: Create a new Setup customization file for the following product and click OK
4. We are now ready to add all our files into then MSP
5. Under Additional Content – click Add Files to add here the template for Word (Normal.dotm). In the
File Destination Path dialog box, in the Destination path on the user's computer list, select
%AppData\Microsoft\Templates, and then click OK
6. Under Additional Content - click Remove files, and then click
Add. In the File Path dialog box, under
Path and file name of file to be deleted, enter %AppData%\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dotm, and then click
OK. (This will remove any Normal.dotm file from the users’ computers that is from a previous installation of Word.)
7. In the console tree, click Add registry entries, and then click
Add. Follow the path I mentioned for Excel: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Excel\Options, type in the information and click
OK to save.
8. In the console tree, click Remove registry entries, and then click
Add. Type in the registry key information above and click
OK to save. This will remove the previous font setting for Excel.
We have now finished creating the customization file. You can save it from
File – Save as – Name.msp
We are now ready to create the start-up script and add it to the GPO that will deploy these settings to the whole organization.
To create the .bat file that will be used in the start-up script, please open Notepad and use the following text:
setlocal
reg query HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Patches\9EA4D5478DD17EE45B1A1E670AC471BC
if %errorlevel%==1 (goto Patches) else (goto End)
REM If 1
returned, the patch is not installed. Install the patch here.
:Patches
"%windir%\system32\msiexec.exe" /p \\server\shared_folder\Name.msp /qn
REM If 0 or other was returned, the patch is already installed. Do nothing.
:End
Endlocal
Please NOTE that you need to change the
\\server\shared_folder to point to the correct path and MSP file in your environment.
Save the Notepad file as Name.bat in the same shared location (\\server\shared_folder)
On the Domain Controller create a new Policy and assign it to the desired
Organizational Unit. Edit the policy and go under:
User Configuration – Windows Settings –
Scripts (Logon/Logoff)
Double click Logon – click Add
Under Script name please type the location and the name of the .bat file we created earlier (please use UNC path and not a drive letter)

By the quick launch bar, do you mean the Quick Access Toolbar? If so, when you customize the it in a particular application, Office 2010 creates an *.officeUI file for that application that contains the customization XML. With this understanding, you can
do one of the following:
•Modify an existing *.officeUI file with the desired customizations by updating the XML code.
•Create the desired customizations by using the Customization dialog in the Microsoft Office application, apply the customizations, and then browse to the *.officeUI file.
Please note we need to customize the Quick Access Toolbar in each application.
Detailed steps to deploy the Quick Access Toolbar can be found in this MSDN article below:

I hope the information is helpful.

  • Deactivating StarOffice 8 Registration Screen for All Future Users

I have found documentation from Sun on how to deactivate the registration screen for StarOffice 8, however it is assuming the user folders already exist.
I need a solution for any future user of that PC; the PCs are in a school district, if every K-12 student sees this registration screen, we will have confusion on what steps they need to follow to get past these screens. This summer we are hoping to move away from MSOffice completely, however this is an issue that seems to be in our way.
Here are the steps from Sun to deactivate if the user folder exists:
On the step 3 User Name page, leave the user information boxes empty.
On the step 4 Registration page, select I do not want to register, and then click the Finish button.
Create an archive file of the StarOffice 8 user directory.
Unpack the archive into the user directories where you want to deactivate the
    Registration Wizard.
Our PCs do not have a folder for every possible student that would ever sign onto the PC, that would number into the thousands. Am I overlooking something or not seeing this solution clearly?

    Hello!
I think this procedure works on WinXP:
After installation start StarOffice and make your settings (ie file formats, fonts and so on). Close SO8
Go to C:\documents and settings\your account\Application data\StarOffice8. Delete the file .lock.
    Copy the folder C:\documents and settings\your account\Application data\StarOffice8 to C:\documents and settings\Default user\Application data\(and to ......\All users\application data)
Make sure there is no file .lock in the copied folders.

  • Change default security settings for new Discoverer users? How?

Hello, using Discoverer 10g with SSO integration.
I've created two roles and create in advance users in the DB user, granting them
one of the two roles. The two roles privileges for Discoverer are already configured.
This way, when I create the user in the DB before launching Disco, granting the user one or the other role, I should be all set about what the user can or cannot do on Discoverer (Plus).
    So far the theory :)
The problem is that the full permission given by Discoverer to each new user override the role settings, so each new user can do everything (instead one of the roles forbids saving and sharing, for example).
I have to go to Disco Admin and uncheck the "Plus/Viewer" checkbox for the user to make roles actually work as expected.
How can I set Discoverer user default as "Cannot do anything" on Plus/Viewer so that roles apply without further admin intervention?
    Thanks
    Mario

    Thanks a lot Rod.
The problem here is we need to allow portal users the ability to access Discoverer Plus without using Disco Admin: once a user is registered in the SSO, he should be able to connect successfully to Discoverer.
So we need creating user privileges on behalf of Disco Admin.
Tough job, but it seems it ca be done.

    Mario

  • Save settings for all future sites, albums etc.

I am working on an iWeb website and now put together lots of albums and image galleries. I have found a setting I like for the galleries for instance, such as 4 image-columns, a certain album style, 50 images per page and so on. But I have to set that manually for each and every page I work on. Can that become a general setting or can I simply copy the settings from on site to others.
    Any ideas?
I have around 100 pages to do, so less manual work would be much appreciated!!

thanks, that works on standard pages. But if I use the album template and insert my albums from the media inspector this doesn´t work as that drag-and-dropping creates the new site. Any ideas for that?

  • How to change settings for all users?

    Hi All,
In cPro we have User Settings button. On clicking that we get a Tabstrip where you will find "User" tab.
my question is: How can we change the default settings for all users e.g setting the checkbox "Scheduling only manually" to true ?
    Best Regards,
    Arti.

    Hi Arti,
In cProjects the authorizations can be managed either by authorization profile administration by system administrator for General authorizations or by Project specific authorizations for individual cProjects elements by Project owner.
Try the first one and I hope you will get the solution.

  • How to set the default settings for all users in 11.1.1.3

    I have couple of questions
    1. How can I change the default setting for all the users so that whenever they log in the planning takes them to the Task lists mode. Or is this a one time thing which they need to do individually ?
    2. How can I set the defalut setting for all the users so that they can see the same page when they log into Workspace ?

For workspace have a read of - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E12825_01/epm.111/bpmui_admin/assigning_default_preferences.html
For planning you can't really set it without hacking tables.

  • How to set the same General settings for all users

    Hi Experts,
How can i set the same general settings for all users e.g. marking the checkbox "Display header" to true for all users? General settings are possible under User Settings Button.
    Regards,
    Arti.

    Hi Arti!
You can default user settings in a PFCG role, in the "personalization" tab.
If you have a PFCG role that is common to all your users, you can set the default values here.
However it does not prevent them to change these settings later, except if you modify the "user settings" fields properties in cProjects application.

  • Is it possible to change proxy settings for all profiles that´s created instead of the standard options. We need to change "use systems proxy" into "automatic"

    Proxy Problems
We need to be able to change the default settings for the proxy for all profiles on our computers that´s created for new users.
Standard is that firefox takes the option "use the system options" for the proxy. We would like it to use the option "automatic" instead like IE and Chrome does.
Considering that we have over 500 computers doing this manually isn´t an option, because a new profile is created everytime someone logs on to a computer they haven´t used before.

You can use a mozilla.cfg file in the Firefox program folder to lock prefs or specify new default values.
Place a file local-settings.js in the defaultspref folder where you also find the file channel-prefs.js to specify using mozilla.cfg.
    pref("general.config.filename", "mozilla.cfg");
    pref("general.config.obscure_value", 0); // use this to disable the byte-shift
    See:
You can use these functions in mozilla.cfg:
defaultPref(); // set new default value
pref(); // set pref, but allow changes in current session
lockPref(); // lock pref, disallow changes
This will work for all existing and newly created profiles.

  • How to configure default parental settings for all users (10.7)?

    Hello,
I've made a silent installation of iTunes using MSI files and it works well.
I need to enable parental controls and configure it. Users must be preventing of changing these settings.
At the end of the iTunes installation I automatically created registry keys :
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer, Inc.\iTunes\Parental Controls]
    "AdminFlags"=dword:001b7ac5
    "AdminMoviesLimit"=dword:000000c8
    "AdminTVShowsLimit"=dword:000001f4
    "AdminRatingSystemID"=dword:0000000b
    "AdminGamesLimit"=dword:0000012c
According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2102 it is the procedure to set default parental settings for all users and to lock these settings.
When iTunes is first launched, parental settings are not set nor locked.
I use iTunes 64 bits on Windows 7 64 bits.
    Where is the mistake?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Win7 and Reader X - default settings for ALL users/profiles

I have a custom browser/app that opens PDF's within the app which can sometimes cause issues. I found that if I set Reader X to not open in the browser (Edit>Preferences>Internet - uncheck "Display PDF in Browser") that this does resolve most issues. My problem...when changed this only affects the current user/profile that's logged in. Potentially there can be dozens of users on these laptops. The other setting is when opening a PDF, I get the warning about Protected Mode not being able to be used due to the current configuration. I can select "Always open with Protected Mode disabled" and I no longer get the message; but again, current user/profile only.
Is there a way to set these settings for ALL users/profiles? Running Win7 (32bit) with Reader X.

I do not know why you experience this; what exactly happens when a non-admin users attempts to highlight something?
You are talking about highlighting in the same document?

  • How to reset all Internet Explorer 8 settings for a different user profile?

Sometimes users on locked down PCs that need their IE settings reset to resolved issues such as improper/old cached credentials stored in the browser after a password change etc.  These issues can be resolved by opening
Internet Options, Advanced tab, Reset, Delete All, Reset.
The users cannot do this because the Advanced Tab is hidden by policy.  If an administrator logs in with a different account, of course, anything they change is in their profile and not the user's profile.
Is there some way for an administrator user to log in and access Internet Control Panel settings for a different user's Internet Options so they can reset the browser for a limited user?
We need a more streamlined way to do this instead of needing to either blow away the user's entire Windows profile or else go through the convoluted process of getting the GPO admins to undo the group policy for one user to unhide the tab, have the help
desk reset the browser for the user and then have the GPO admins reapply the original policy.

You can try the following script
Reset Internet Explorer all Setting to default using PowerShell Script

  • Security settings for all users

I recently developed a document that requires digital signatures and have been testing it. The only downside is that when a user opens the document, Adobe prompts for the installation of new security settings, and it installs it for that user only. I need to add a registry key to the new security settings, but it is only available to be added to the current user hive. Does anyone know how to install the new settings for all users?
Here is the registry key I need to add.
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\9.0\Security\cPubSec]
    "bSelfSignCertGen"=dword:00000000
Im using Adobe Reader 9.3 and Win XP.
    Any help would be terrific!
    Thanks.

    Hi,
There are really two separate issues. First, is Adobe pushing updates to the Acrobat Address Book (i.e. adding certificates as trust anchors) and the second issue is how you can push your own update to disable the creation of self-signed digital IDs. Although the two issues share an underlying mechanism, they are separate and you cannot leverage one for the other.
First issue first. Adobe has entered into partnership with certain Certificate Authorities and has created a mechanism to add their certificates to the Acrobat Address Book (aka Manage Trusted Identities) using http to send a copy of the Security Settings file that contains only digital IDs. There are two ways to trigger the download process. One is to go into the Preferences, select Trust Manager, and click the Update Now button in the Automatic Updates group box. The other method is to load the DigSig plug-in (beginning with Acrobat 9, plug-ins no longer load a launch in order to speed up the launch process). As I'm sure you have deduced, opening a file with a signature field cause the DigSig plug-in to load which in turn triggers the automatic download. The reason we have limited the automatic download to DigSig being loaded is because the vast majority of people viewing PDFs are not using the digital signature functionality (much to my personal chagrin because the more people use digital signatures, the better my job security ) and we didn't want to bother them with an update they would never need. People already complain that there are too many updates, and we are trying to limit the irritability factor. To close the loop on this function, once the download process has been triggered the Acrobat check two more things before it does the update, 1) has it been a month since I checked and, 2) if it has been a month is there a new file to download. This way we are not pestering people with unneeded updates, or if they do need the update, at least not too often. And finally, Address Book management has to be on a per user basis. A certificate that you may elect to trust could be a certificate that the next person want to specifically keep untrusted. The Windows Certificate Store, Mac Keychain and Firefox Certificate Manager all work on a per user basis.
That brings us to what you would like to do. The good news is you can use the Export Security Settings featrue to create a distributable file that will set the preference. The real question is how will you distribute the file, but before we get to that, here is how to create the file.
With Acrobat closed, set the registry setting you noted in the message above
    Launch Acrobat
Select the Advanced > Security > Export Security Settings menu item
Click the Deselect All button on the Export Security Settings dialog
Select the Signing Preferences Settings checkbox
Click the OK button on the Export Security Settings dialog
Select Signature Creation Settings and note "Allow creation of self-signed Digital IDs" is set to No
Click the Export button on the toolbar
Follow the on screen dialogs. You don't have to encrypt the file, but you must sign it with a certifying signature
At this point you have the file available for distribution. You could e-mail it to your intended recipients with import instructions, or you could post if for download, or you could set the Preference the to automatically push the file from a server. To check this feature out select the Edit > Preferences menu item and then select Security from the Categories list box. You would need to select the Load security settings from a server checkbox and then set up the URL. As an aside, you can also export these settings by selecting the Automatic Update Settings checkbox on the Export Security Settings dialog noted in the bullet points above. You have a chicken and egg problem in that you have to get the users to first manually import the file in order to set up the automatic import. That I can't help you with, you're just going to have to decide what works best for you.
    Good luck,
    Steve

is it possible to mass change desktop wall paper for all users using WGM?

yes, it's easy - change a machine to the desktop you want (the image must be on all the machines, with the same name, of course), find ~/library/preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist Copy that to your server (or just put it on a flash drive) In workgroup manager select preferences - details - "add". Navigate to that plist. (Optional - hit "edit" and cut and past from "often" to "always", then the user cannot change the desktop at all, if you leave it in "often" it will reset next log-on.)
