Changing folder permissions, deleted account

EDIT: Figured it out.  I had to enable the root user and make a new folder.
I recently had a hard drive failure, no backup other than random files on a hard drive.
I created a new account on a fresh install of OSX, and I no longer have permission to view folders on the old hard drive.
How can i change the permissions when the folder doesnt know what its permissions are?
I tried the old account name, user name, and password, but none worked.

  • Need to change country or delete account

I have created an Azure account using our 365 credentials and left US selected as the country. I need to make this a UK account.
It seems that you cannot change the country after creating the account.
How can I delete this account so I can create a new one?
    Dan

    Hi,
Before cancel your account, I would suggest you read this thread
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsazure/en-US/31f4f6b3-dadd-4ca1-abd6-e3abc0b115bc/i-cannot-change-my-country-on-my-windows-azure-account?forum=windowsazurepurchasing.
Here is a snippet of this thread.
As far as changing your country for your Live ID, go to
https://account.live.com/, and click “Change” beside “Country/region”. But I’m not sure if that also changes your Windows Azure account’s country. For more information, I would recommend you to contact our customer support on
    https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?prid=14234&st=1&wfxredirect=1&sd=gn.
I recommend you try to change 365 country region, then consider delete and create a new one, refer to
http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/support/cancel-account/ for more information about delete cancel azure account.

  • Unable to save home folder while deleting account

    Hi there:
I am trying to delete a user account from a 10.6.8 MBP. I want to save the user's home folder to a DMG, like I always do. There is 201.42GB free on the HD. I get an error when trying to delete the account, however, that:
"The home folder cannot be saved. To save the folder, you need 57.6GB of free disk space." (Well, it's not really an error. The "save folder" option is greyed out, with that explanation).
LIke I mentioned, there is over 200GB free on the drive. I tried repairing permissions and rebooting. Verified disk. No help.
    Can anyone advise?
    Thanks!

Grrr...Never mind. Once I took ownership of the user's folder, OSX started reporting the correct size. There is not, in fact, enough room on the HD, so I'll figure something else out.
    Thanks.

  • Finder crashes when changing folder permissions

When I try to change a folder's permissions via the Information window (Apple + i) the finder crashes reproducably.
    This is what I do:
1.) select folder in finder and press apple + i
2.) click the lock icon and enter Admin name and password
3.) select "everyone" in name column
4.) click on rights in the rights column
5.) spinning ball, finder crashes and restarts
    According to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8342.html
steps 1 through 4 are exactly what should be done.
    Any other ideas?
PS: I can remove users/groups via the +/- buttons but clicking the activity (is that the name?) button next to it leads to step 5.

Then, I surmise that the problem's system-wide. For that, install the 10.5.5 COMBO update, repair permissions, and restart. If that doesn't fix things, you're looking at doing an Archive & Install installation. Details at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545

  • Changing Folder Permissions after upgrading to Leopard

I just upgraded to Leopard and previously while being logged into the computer as admin, I was able to set "no access" permissions to specific folders.
I always thought this was a waste of time, regardless, I was able to do it and now can not.
Under "Get Info_Sharing & Permissions" for the specific folder, there are three groups available...admin(me), (unknown) and everyone. Everyone is the only selection that gives me the option to set "no access." "no access" is not available for the other two; admin and unknown.
When logged in under another profile (which is NOT listed under "Get Info_Sharing & Permissions" of this file) when I select "no access" under "everyone" of this file, I immediately see the icon change to a folder with a red minus symbol. It can't be accessed when double clicking. It says you don't have enough access privileges. This is what I'm looking to replicate under the admin profile. Something I could do before.
Am I missing something new in Leopard. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey I've only had a brief moment at home to verify the problems you are having. Honestly I haven't put much thought in to it. But, in the meantime, while I try and think of why this is, if you aren't too uncomfortable going into the Terminal you can do this from the commandline fairly easily.
Assuming you want no access for "Everyone", open Terminal.app and type:
"chmod 750 " (without quotes and ensuring you have the trailing space).
Now, drag the file or folder you want to grant no access to onto the terminal window. Its path should show up and now you can press enter and now Everyone won't be able to read or write to this folder.
If you want to get rid of any access for Everyone and the group that owns the file/folder, then do the same as above but instead of "chmod 750..." do "chmod 700 ..."
Hope this helps until I can get a GUI fix going.

  • System Folder errors after I changed all permissions on HD to read & write

    Hi,
Two things may have caused probs on my new 2010 iMac (Snow Leopard), and Applecare is shut so I would really appreciate some help as I have urgent work.
    1) INCORRECT PERMISSIONS
I have been stupid. I clicked on Macintosh HD and changed all permissions to read & write because I wanted to be sure I could open and edit all documents on other computers.
I ran Disk Utility Repair Permissions from the install disc, but I am still getting system error messages, and my HP printer won't work.
The first message, in Repair Permissions, said: Warning: SUID file System/Library/Cores has been modified and will not be repaired. I have read a support doc on this which says no need to worry but I don't like it and would like to fix this.
More importantly, my HP printer won't work, displays error beside the document in print dialogue box.
Deleting the printer and readding it didn't work, so I downloaded new drivers and tried to install them, which is when I got the second system error message: System extension System/Library/Extensions/BJUSBLoad.kext was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it or contact product's vendor for an update.
I checked the permissions on the file and they were still wrong despite Repair Permissions, allowing everyone to read & write. So I have now clicked on the entire System folder and changed the permissions to: System read & write, admin read only, everyone read only.
Will this fix it or do I need to do something else, such as check ownership, to make sure all permissions on the computer are now correct?
    2) MEMORY STICK SHUT DOWN MY IMAC
Additionally (though I don't think this had anything to do with my problems), I inserted a Sandisk USB memory stick the other day and it immediately shut down the computer. When I inserted it into my Macbook it initially rejected it and gave me a message saying the device wanted too much power so it had ejected it to prevent damage to my computer. When I tried again it was OK. I totally reformatted the stick in case there was something harmful on it, but should I now bin the stick as faulty? Scared to use it again.
    3) IS IT BEST TO REINSTALL ENTIRE SOFTWARE?
If I do a reinstall of all the software from the install disc, will it wipe out all my data, such as Mail, documents, bookmarks and other apps?
I would back-up, but if I try and back up files on my external drive it will automatically do a Time Machine back-up and I don't want to do that in case it backs-up all the corrupted files. Otherwise, I wouldn't mind starting again just to be sure all is well.
Expert advice would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you
    Sarah

Oh, silly really. I was in a hurry and working on docs that I needed to take to the office and open on another computer there.
But when I checked the permissions on the doc it said I could read & write but everyone else was read only.
I thought if I opened it on another machine I'd be stuck with read only access and not be able to work on there. I think I couldn't change it, so I thought to avoid any future problems like that I would change everything on machine!
    Yikes. Won't do that again

  • Changing user folder permissions

My wife and I both have admin accounts on my computer. I want to be able to easily transfer files from my user folder to hers without running into permissions problems. For example, I may want to take a photo from my Pictures folder and drop it in her Pictures folder. I can't do that because access is blocked to everyone but her. It's irritating to have to drop the file on a neutral ground, log in to her account, and take the file and put it in her folder. I logged in as root and tried to change the permissions by giving admin group read and write privileges but it gives an error of -60002 if I try that. I can't change the permissions while not logged in as root since the option is greyed out. Any ideas? I don't care one bit about "compromising security".

    Hi Xeep,
Error -60002 is "The authorization parameter is invalid".
From your account, have you first tried changing the Owner to yu, then the Group to admin, then the owner back to her?
    Or better yet, try BatChMod...

  • How can I change Aperture permissions for new user account

I migrated my old user account (Ezra) to my new Mac mini from my old MBP laptop, but it would not allow me to keep the same name, (Ezra) so I picked a new one (Karyn). The problem is that now I can't access any of my other Aperture Libraries on my external storage array (Drobo) due to permissions errors. What is the best course of action to get back to working with Aperture? Is there a way to change an existing user account name to match what it used to be? I want the (Ezra) account from the Mac mini to eventually migrate to a freshly purchased Macbook Air later, then I could delete it from the Mac mini to rid the problem of duplicate user account names.

Sounds like when you installed the new system you created a user account on it and then used migration assistant to copy over the files from the old system,. IS this correct?
If so you will have other problems down the road with other applications also. The best thing to so if you still have the old system and have not done to much work on the new system  is to redo the install and use setup assistant. This way your old account will be brought over to the new system and you will not have permissions problems.
You can try one thing. Do a Get Info on the Drobo Drive and see if at the bottom of the Info window you see this:
If that is there for the drive (and I don;t know if the Drobo will have this option) you can select the box and you might be able to get at your libraries.
As I wrote however, even of you fix this problem there is a good chance you will run into others later on.
    regards

  • Want to change my Permissions on my account

Hi. I need to update my "Personal" account to have the same access as the root. When I go into "Accounts" it lists my account as "admin". Yet I still can't access everything.
Is there a way to make my login account equal to root?

    Okay,
Here's the way I dealt with the permissions problem:
Right-click on a folder that is giving you trouble. I would suggest you start with the folders in the main directory of your hard drive, as in Macntosh HD\Video\ as opposed to Macintosh HD\Video\Final Cut Projects\.
Choose "Get Info" from the menu
At the bottom of this window, you will see "Sharing & Permissions." Left-click on the lock icon at the bottom left. Assuming your account has administrator privileges it will prompt you for a username and password then allow you to edit the permissions.
You should see the name of your account listed (with "me" next to it in parenthesis), along with "Read & Write" in the "Privileges" column.
If you only see "Read" in the Privileges column, left-click the up/down arrows and choose "Read & Write."
If don't see your account listed at all, hit the "plus" icon and choose your account.
If your current account is the primary user, I would suggest highlighting your account and selecting "Make ACCOUNT NAME (Me) the Owner" from the asterisk drop-down menu to the left of the plus/minus buttons.
Once you're satisfied with your choices, choose "Apply to Enclosed Items" from the asterisk menu. This will take a second, as it is changing the permissions for the files and folders saved within this file.
Now, if someone who has more Mac experience and/or a deeper knowledge of permissions and file structure sees something wrong with these instructions, please let me know. I figured this out because I had to get access to my Media HD, not because I was trained in Leopard theory.
But so far it's worked for me -aside from loosing and FCP 5.1 project . . . one of my files can no longer be loaded by FCP. But I did reinstall FCP after erase and install of leopard, so I think it has to do with FCP versions more then permissions issues.
    Is this what you needed?
    CMF
If you see any accounts listed as "unknown" select them and then hit the "minus" button at the bottom.

cannot receive or send email from my hotmail account, refuses to verify server. I have changed my password, deleted the account numerous times, any solutions? all on ios 6. it was working up until a few days ago and now refuses to load on both my ipad 2 and iphone 4S
in the process deleted all my contact, very annoying.
    all help is much appreciated.
interesting that my gmail account does work perfectly.

this may or may not help - but give it a try.  On a forum some were reporting that talk21 is now under the yahoo umbrella.  below are the steps this use listed.  (This was an android forum, but the email settings should be the same.  In short it looks like their server names have changed.  An existing account may have simply been forwarded - but if you are reinstalling, it may want a clean install to the right servers.)  Pay particular attention to the server names and port settings.  (this thread was started based on a discussion of Imap vs pop - you are already an Imap person - so ignore that part)
    See if this helps.
why settle for pop3, when IMAP works with talk21 and not only does mail get pushed out faster with IMAP, but when you click refresh it will be received faster than pop3.  The other advantage is subfolders are also supported with IMAP but cant be seen with POP3. This mail feature works with my android eclair & hero phone and the settings are exactly the same for win mobiles also (not tested). The mail setting up roadmap is the same from what i can remember once in the mail feature for win mobi.
This is what you need to do to setup Talk21 email with IMAP.
    Incoming server settings
    IMAP server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
    Port - 143
    Security type - none
    Outgoing Server settings
    SMTP server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    Port - 25
Security type - none Also important note - Enable 'require sign-in'
and enter your talk21 username and password The End...works a treat for me p.s. Its only taken me 3 years to work it out with win mobile and recently with android. Finally got it to work...hope this helps all the talk21 users out there. if there are any other similar posts out there with no answer...dont forget to mention my name when passing this post around.

  • My iCloud address on the iPad needs to be changed. If I press "delete account" it tells me I will lose all the content including pictures. How can I change it? I see other people have had the same problem

I have had to change my e mail address but I cannot work out how to amend it on my iCloud account. If I press "delete account" the box appears telling me that I will lose all content including photos if I continue. The box asking for a password keeps appearing but I just press cancel and continue.
I have not attempted to upgrade to iOS 7 until this problem is sorted. Can anyone help please?

If you mean that you created a new icloud account using a new email address as the primary address, then when changing to that account on a device, all data maintained by the old account will be deleted.  I was not aware that photos are included.  But as for photos, ALWAYS sync them to a computer for archiving, never rely on icloud as your only backup.
If you want to keep the contacts, etc. data from the old account, then go to Settings>icloud and turn off the services, one at a time.  When doing so, you are given the choice to keep the data local or delete from the device.  Later, when doing Delete Account and logging into the new account, your data will sync up to it.
If, on the other hand, your changed email address is just an alias in the existig icloud account, then there's no reason to delete the account as the alias is just another link to the same account.

I used my daughter's itunes id to log into icloud as I forgot my information.  Now I have established my account information and want to remove hers to add mine.  I am afraid to "delete account" as I fear it will delete her information.  How do I change the icloud account?

Go to iTunes menu, STORE and sign out.  Then you can sign in from there or create a new account which should match the account you have on your iPad and iPhone.

If all you did was rename your ID, you can go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted, then sign back in with your renamed ID.  Deleting the account only deletes the account and any data you are syncing with iCloud from your phone, not from iCloud.  Provided you are signing back into the same account and not changing accounts, your data will be synced back to your phone when you sign back in.
If, however, you are changing to a new account with a new ID, choose Keep on My iPhone when prompted.  Then choose Merge when you sign into the new account and turn your iCloud syncing back on to upload your data to the new account.
Before deleting the account, save you photo stream photos to your camera roll (tap Edit, tap all the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll).

  • How to delete the home folder of a deleted account?

After I set up a new account, I transferred everything from my old macbook pro to my new iMac (so it has a moutain lion system. I'm sure you know it. Just want to make it clear ) through migration assistance from time machine. Then I realized that an extra account (my old one) plus many unnecessary data had been transferred to my new iMac. Therefore, I decided to delete this old account.
HOWEVER, when I deleted the account, I failed to delete the home folder--I chose to delete it securely; but after it started backing up, I simply cancel the backup (which is a HUGE mistake) Then I found the account was deleted but its home folder stayed-- it occupied over 150GB of my new iMac.
Could anyone tell me how I can delete the home folder securely?
in addition, since I only want to transfer iphoto pictures, iTune music and some important documents to my new account, should I simply copy thme to an external drive and transfer them to my new account?
Thanks a lot for your help!

In system preferences, create a new account again, using the short name of the "deleted" account. You may be prompted to re-use the old home folder. Log out and log in to test it worked. Then log in as your new admin, and do the delete process again. Don't choose to securely delete this time - just a regular delete.
When you have time to spare, go to Disk Utility, and use the Erase tab to securely erase free space on the drive. This will accomplish the same thing that your originally tried to do. Use the fastest method - anything more secure is a waste of time. You may need to run it overnight - it can take several hours.
