Changing from a PowerBook G4 to a MacBook Pro
I am about to buy a Macbook Pro 15" to replace my 4 year old Powerbook G4. I have backed up the entire Powerbook using an external harddrive and time machine. I have a feeling that my new macbook pro will not recognize this time machine. How can I use Time Machine to transfer all my programmes and files onto the Macbook Pro?

What makes you think the new Mac won't recognise that Time Machine Volume ?
Once you have your new machine connect the Time Machine volume and then run 'Migration Assistant' on the new one, then you can select your files, music, pictures and applications to move across. Be sure NOT to move any System Files of course as they won't be compatible.

Honestly, your best bet is to email them to an account you can access with your Macbook ...if you don't have a lot of course. Other option would be to save to floppy's and find a 'USB powered' floppy drive to get them to your book - textedit should be able to open any word files you have saved (not the formatting though).

Mac OS X 10.4 and later don't support Personal File Sharing (or other AFP) over Appletalk, though by initiating the connection from the opposite direction you could still achieve an IP connection from a Mac OS 8 computer to a sharing Mac OS X computer.
Looks a little complicated though.

I have used firewire to transfer other info but iphoto and my domain have not transferred.

I changed my password to use migration to transfer files from a G4 to a new macbook pro but now I have to sign in every time. How do I avoid the sign in?
I clicked on keychain access but getting a warning that it quit unexpectedly and it won't reopen.

Hi i cannot change the brightness on my late 2011 macbook pro.
Hi i cannot change the brightness on my late 2011 macbook pro. It is stuck on the lowest level in which i can't view the screen without a flash light. Please i need help how to solve this. I was on my computer when i checked the back which it was really dusty, i tried unscrewing the bottom however some screws were too tight so i took it upon myself and got a rod and startedremoving the dust off the vents and i may have clicked something as i closed the lid on the macbook i could hear the sounds still from the film but the lid was closed as i opened it back up the brightness was on low but sounds were still playing. All the buttons work , all of the F keys, apart from the brightnes keys. I can shine a tourch on the screen and see the display but the brightness will not change but i can see when i click the brightness it says it changes. I have connected it to a spare tv i have via hdmi and i really need help as this is my primary computer and i need it for work when going away. Thank you

How do I transfer my iTunes library from my old computer to my MacBook Pro?
Just copy the entire Music folder from the old Mac to the new Mac, then click on the folder and Get Info and change the permisisons and click the spoke to "apply to enclosed items"
Ideally it's best to use the same user name on the new machine, this way all your iTunes playlists work and there is no need to change permissions.
You can create the same named user by creating another account in System Preferences >accounts
If the old computer is a PC then just copy the old Music folder to the Mac onto the desktop, then use iTunes to import the music files.
If the old comptuer is dead, then you can extract the hard drive(if it's still working) and use a IDE/SATA to USB adapter cable to access the internal drive.
Mac's should be able to read NTFS format of PC's, just not write to it. But if it's not working there is software to install to allow the Mac to read that NTFS drive format, just search online. -
I have just changed my internal Hard drive on my MacBook pro. I had recently downloaded some movies on iTunes which I want to put into my iTunes library on my new internal hard drive. I have put my old internal hard drive into an external capsule but when I open the icon of the hard drive from the desktop I can't find my movies.
At the moment I have the new movies downloading again from the cloud but it is literally taking hours for even one movie to load.
When I changed the internal hard drive I restored my info from my old external hard drive which hadn't been backed up in a month and hence does not have my latest movies...
I am concerned that I might go over my internet usage limit (flatmate is refusing to change to unlimited package!!!!) by downloading all the movies again from the cloud never mind how long it is taking...
Is there any way to restore all my info and media from the old internal Hard drive in the capsule as well as from the external hard drive?It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
button.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive. -
I want to copy my iphoto library from my iMac to my new Macbook Pro.
I am having a lot of difficulty copying my existing iphoto library from our imac to our new macbook pro. We have the two computers set up through Time Machine. I tried using dropbox and though I was successful until I tried to click on the thumbnails of some of the pics and only got a black image and a "!". The pics that would open could not be edited. When I look at permissions I show that every category are read and write ( I changed them all to try and resolve this). When I pull up info on the macbook about the library it still shows the imac extension on the library. Don't know if that is a problem or not. Tried to copy the files again and it stopped mid process saying I did not have permission?! Both computers are running Lion. This permission thing is making me crazy. What am I missing? We don't need restricted permission on either computer.. it's our house not a business w/ employees!!
Why don't you copy the library to a flash drive and then copy to the other Mac?

I had checked Finder Preferences to make sure everything was still checked, and it was. But as a result of your suggestion I decided to go back and uncheck them, relaunch Finder, restart my MacBook Pro, and re-check them. That didn't actually change anything, BUT, in moving my cursor around the sidebar I discovered there is a "show/hide" button to the right of the word Favorites which only shows up when you hover over it (a bad design imo) and I must have somehow clicked on it and pouf! All disappeared! So, thank you! I would not have discovered that absent your suggestion. All is now showing in my sidebar again.

I cannot install lion from mac appstore. i have a macbook pro early 2011 model with 10.6.8 and i keep getting a wierd error NSInternalInconsistencyException i have no idea what to do.
I changed my wireless broadband to a landline-base DSL wifi and it works like a charm. Sun was the culprit even you fiddle with its router and disable firewall, it won't work.
try changing yours too and let me know how it goes. -
I have 3 computers...Window PC, PowerBook G3 (old) and MacBook Pro. I use firefox for all of them and have for quite some time. Is there a way for them all to use the same toolbar? Each of them have differnet bookmark/ settings etc.,
Open Media Encoder and add your Sequences:
File > Add Premiere Pro Sequence
Navigate to your Premiere Project and select it in the list.
You can then select multiple Sequences from the Project (Ctrl+Click)
and load them all at once into Media Encoder and apply
the same encoding preset to all Sequences at the same time. -
Transfering pictures from Droid Razor Memory Card to Macbook Pro Laptop!
I have a Droid Razor & I'm trying to transfer my pictures from my memory card to my Macbook Pro Laptop. It's not working. Can someone please help me nobody seems to know anything about how this is done through Apple or Verizon. I can transfer my pictures onto my Dell Desktop with no problem. I'm getting very frustrated. I knew I should have bought the IPHONE but Verizon talked me out of it! Please someone help me A.S.A.P.

I've had my Droid Razor just before Christmas, my husband bought it for me for a Christmas gift. Now when I slide the bar across to unlock the phone it goes real slow. I'm really not very happy with this phone at all, but I guess I'm stuck with it. What do you think as far as to which you think is the better phone the IPhone or Droid Razor. I'm having a hard time uninstalling VCast from my apple too. If you have any suggestions I would really appreciate it. Thanks so much. Ann

Thanks for following up Ann. When you plug in your RAZR, is VCast opening up on your laptop? If so, I suggest uninstalling it from the laptop so it does not interfere with what we're trying to do. When multiple programs are trying to read the same USB device, it causes conflicts. As far as the iPhone goes, if you're still within your 14-day exchange period, feel free to exchange the device for one that you want. Please keep me updated when you have the time. Hi, I am trying to get my voice memos from my iPhone 3GS to my MacBook Pro via iTunes and it is not working. I have ticked sync music in the music tab of the iPhone device and the include voice memos box is also ticked. So, apparently this should work, but there is no sign of the voice memos in iTunes or in the iTunes folder in the finder window. Any ideas much appreciated! :-) Thank you.
I've always had the "Include Voice Memos" option selected. I think that only pertains to syncing voice memos from iTunes to the iPhone after it has been copied to iTunes. It has to be the new OS/iTunes not communicating that new memos have been recorded. For some reason they won't sync when I want them to, and then a few syncs later they magically appear.
By the way, I'm VERY comfortable with the iTunes and iPhone systems. I've been using iTunes for 5 years, and I've been recording class lectures with the iPhone voice memo app (and another app) for a couple years. It's not an error of not seeing that the memos were added; they don't exist in my library or music folders.
JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY, POST WHICH FIRMWARE YOU ARE RUNNING EXACTLY!!!
