Changing SID Server 2012
Hello,
In Server 2008, to be able to create new VM using same (copied) VHD, we had to use SYSREP to change SID or 3rd party tools, if we wanted to join it to the same domain, otherwise we got an instability on servers.
How can we change/update SID in server 2012? I can't find SYSPREP nor other tool.
Or maybe we don't need to change SID anymore?
Thanks
I belive you don't need to, it's actually just a precaution...
Though, if you are using domains, you might need to opt the server out of the domain, and then join the domain again.
If you are also using it to connect to your own wsus server, you might need to run a registry script with this:
@echo off
Echo Save the batch file "AU_Clean_SID.cmd". This batch file will do the following:
Echo 1. Stop the wuauserv service
Echo 2. Delete the AccountDomainSid registry key (if it exists)
Echo 3. Delete the PingID registry key (if it exists)
Echo 4. Delete the SusClientId registry key (if it exists)
Pause
@echo on
net stop wuauserv
REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v AccountDomainSid /f
REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v PingID /f
REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v SusClientId /f
Pause
net start wuauserv
Just save it as f.ex. Delkeys.reg
And then register it to get updates from wsus server again.

Change Windows Server 2012 colors
Hi
Changing Windows Server 2012 colors is not possible by default without editing the registry.
The location within the registry to change the colors seems to be HKCU\Control Panel\Colors
But:
Comparing these registry entries in Windows Server 2012 with the same entries in Windows 8, which colors are totally different, it is surprising that all RGB color values are exactly identical.
I guess, that this registry part might be the one of previous Windows versions, while the current location to change Windows colors seem to have moved.
Where is the new location within the registry to change Windows Server 2012 colors?
PatrickHi,
As far as I know, the HKCU\Control Panel\Colors is still used for Windows 2012, it is same as Windows 8.
You can also find the registry “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\Colors” to change the colors.

Name change and server 2012 R2
Hi, I try to deploy Windows Server 2012 R2 with mdt 2013, but the problem is that when mdt ask me the name of the computer, I put the name I want (the object name that i put aleready exist in AD, but for some raison he do not change the name and I am
stuck with the default name like Win-xxxxxxxxxx.
I do the same thing to deploy an Windows server 2008 R2 and it's working perfectly so i don't understand why when i try it with windows 2012 R2 it doesn't work ??
Any idea why ??
Stéphane Gagnon
Stephane GagnonMDT collects variables from different sources, include cs.ini, wizards, and from scripts.
When it comes time to write each variable to the unattend.xml file, it writes using the ZTIConfigure.wsf script.
ZTIConfigure will only write to the unattend.xml file if it can find the associated element within the xml file, if it does not exist, it won't write.
In this case MDT can *NOT* find the ComputerName element, see the bdd log entry:
//settings[@pass="specialize"]/component[@name="Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup"]/ComputerName not found in C:\MININT\Unattend.xml, unable to update. ZTIConfigure 6/6/2014 9:35:53 AM 0 (0x0000)
THis is most likely caused by modifications of the unattend.xml file, or if you used a custom unattend.xml file, rather than the one provided in MDT.

Activating/changing Multipoint server 2012 from evaluation to licensed
Hi
Could you please help in how to activate or change the Windows Multipoint server 2012 from evaluation to licensed one?
Below URL is for Windows server 2012, is this the same steps i need to follow?
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj574204.aspx
Thanks for your help!!according to this you should be able to
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn303416.aspx
Upgrade means
moving from your existing operating system release to a more recent release, while staying on the same hardware. For example, if your server is running Windows Server 2012, you can upgrade it to Windows Server 2012 R2. You can upgrade from an evaluation version
of the operating system to a retail version, from an older retail version to a newer version, or, in some cases, from a volume-licensed edition of the operating system to an ordinary retail edition.

Serial Port communication very slow in RDP on windows server 2012
Hellò, we have installed a new server 2012 and connected some thinclients via RDP, since that moment all peripherals connected to the imported com ports of the thinclients are running very slow, for example the cash register issue any receipt only after
15-20 seconds!!. We have try to connect via RDP also a personal computer with many other OS like windows 8, windows 7, or XP but the result is the same: 15-20 seconds for a receipt!! We solve the problem only changing the server 2012 with a old server
2008 or 2003!. How is possible window server 2012 is so slow on RDP imported com ports??. There is something to set for speed up the com ports on rdp? For us this is a great problem, all of our customers are using cash register via RDP and they can't wait
all this time for a receipt. For your information we have tried to connect the cash register to the same com port of the same thinclient to the same server 2012 without RDP and the issue of the receipt is fast, so the problem is something on RDC of the new
OS windows Server 2012. Also note this is a bi-directional communication because the cash register use a bi-directional communication for printing each one of the voice on the receipt, this problem wll not affect other printers unidirectional where the
print process starting in less one second. Please help us to solve this problem, otherwise we will not more install windows server 2012.Hi,
Thanks for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
When the slow performance issue occurs on server 2012, check the Windows Logs – Application category of the Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) on both the client and server sides. If there is any logs recorded, please let us know them. Please also check the
driver is properly installed on server and check the compability guide with the cash register machine, whether it support server 2012 with remote session. If there is particular requirement then you need to solve them first.
In addition, would like you to try connecting with RDP 8.1 and check whether it faces same issue.

Printers added and shared without access to printer properties - Server 2012
On a Server 2012 domain controller, without the Print Management role installed, I have added a network printer through ‘Control Panel’ > ’Devices and Printers’, shared it through group policy, and the domain
member computers are able to print to the shared printer. But the printer never showed up in ‘Devices and Printers’ folder on the server.
The problem comes in since there is no way to edit the settings of the printer. The print queue for the printer does show up in Device Manager. I right-click the printer and select ‘Properties’, open the ‘Settings’ tab, and follow the link that
states, “Please go to the Devices and Printers folder to manage your printer”.
But this just opens up the ‘Devices and Printers’ folder which, does show/contain my printers.
If you are asking why the Print Management role is not used, It is because this system is self-contained and the most minimal features are installed on all computers for security compliance reasons. Therefore we typically just install the printers
on the domain controllers (via Devices and Printers) and then share them via Group Policy to the small number of workstations on the segregated network.
Did the ability to bypass installation of a Print Management role, and still edit printer settings, change for Server 2012? (We were able to do this with Server 2008R2. However, I can’t find any specific Microsoft documentation describing the change.)
So to try to fix this issue on the affected system (from my explanation above), I installed the Print Management role but the printers I created in ‘Control Panel’
don’t show up in Print Management. I still have no way to access the printer settings. Do I have to reinstall the printers? How do I remove the old printers? Do I just remove the ‘Print queues’ from Device Manager?
I tried to replicate my issue on a test system domain controller, built with very similar installation scripts as the affected system above was. I added a printer via ‘Control Panel’ > ‘Devices and Printers’, shared them, and they do not show up. However,
when I then install the Print Management role, the printers I created in ‘Control Panel’
now show up in Print Management. This is different than my affected system above.
If anyone could provide any insight on why this is happening it would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
DanMost likely this is a security setting on the print shares. When you open Devices and Printers, the security token for BUILTIN accounts is not passed to the Explorer process so launching this User Interface as administrator does not contain the ADMIN security
token. If you have removed the Everyone group from the printer security, then the printer can disappear in this UI. For printer admin tasks you should use the tools provided by the print team Printmanagement.msc.
Adding the Print Role opens the spooler RPC endpoint ( which you can also do by sharing a printer ) and adds the tools.
Can you just add the tools without installing the Role?

Cannot access DFS folders as domain admin when using Server 2012 R2
Hello,
recently we added a new domain controller running Windows Server 2012 R2 to our domain. All other domain controllers are running Server 2008 R2. A user now had a problem with his home folder. Therefore, I logged into the new domain controller as a domain
administrator and opened an Explorer. Next I entered "\\ourdomain.comp\accounts$\homes" into the address bar. To my suprise I could only see one folder (the one for the domain administrator account). If I do the same on a any of the Server 2008 R2
machines, I can see all user homes (as expected).
I temporarily disabled ABE for the home folder and now I can see all folders. But if I click on any of them, I get an access denied error stating that I have insufficient permissions to access this folder. It does not matter whether I open Explorer as administrator
or not. On Server 2008 R2 it works in either case. I don't get what's going wrong. No matter which machine I use, I always end up trying to access the same folder on the same machine. Therefore, the rights on this folder are always the same and I should be
able to access it. Do I need to configure something on the new DC? Is there anything related to this that has changed with Server 2012 R2?
Regards,
OliverHi Oliver,
According to your description above, here are the symptoms you observed:
•Logon Server 2008 R2 DC as domain administrator, you can see all user home folders under
\\ourdomain.comp\accounts$\homes and access these folders.
•Logon Server 2012 R2 DC as domain administrator, you can only see the domain administrator home folder under
\\ourdomain.comp\accounts$\homes.
•Logon Server 2012 R2 DC as domain administrator and disable ABE, then you can see all user home folder under
\\ourdomain.comp\accounts$\homes but get an access denied error when you access others user home folder.
Is there any error message in event log on Server 2012 R2 DC when you access the shared folder? Try to disable UAC on the server to check if you can access the shared folder.

Open Files on Server 2012 - Why Do All Mapped Drives (and users) Show as Open
Our office just installed Server 2012 (Standard). We used to run Server 2003 Standard.
We have 3 shared/mapped folders on the server - and have 12 users mapped to those shared folders.
When I go to Computer Management/Shared/Open files, it used to be empty if no users were currently using one of the shared folders (in Server 2003). Now even if no users are currently using one of the mapped folders - most of the users
are listed with the mapped drive reference.
Is this something new in Server 2012?
I used to use this to determine exactly who was in a share if we had problems and needed to close that particular workstation. Now with them all listed, I am wondering if things are not closing properly??
Thank you for any insight you can provide!Thank you for your reply. Now I notice that even though a workstation (Windows 7.0 Pro) has closed our Prosystem FX tax program, there will still be at least one file showing as "open" for that program on Server 2012 even though the user has
exited the program and we have rebooted the workstation.
The tax program itself doesn't seem to "think" the files are open as it lets me do tasks that require all users to be out of the program.
Just wondering why files that aren't open seem to show as open on Server 2012. They did not do this with Server 2003 and XP workstations. Or even with Server 2003 and Windows 7 Pro workstations. Just when we changed to Server 2012 and have
our Windows 7.0 workstations.
Thank you again,

Unable to Change Screen Resolution in Remote Session - Windows Server 2012 R2
Does anybody know of a way to allow Remote Desktop users to adjust their own screen resolution in a remote session under Windows Server 2012 R2? We are struggling with this and can't seem to find a solution.
When users login to their RDP session and try to adjust their screen resolution this message is displayed in Control Panel:
"The display settings can't be changed from a remote session."
We don't want to use the "make text and other items larger or smaller" scaling feature, as this produces undesirable results with some of our applications. We also don't want to have to support multiple types of RDP clients or RDP shortcut
files.
We have looked at other posts but can't find an answer that applies to Windows Server 2012 R2. The closest thing we could find is KB2726399, but it only applies to Server 2008.
Does anybody have a solution for Server 2012?
ThanksHi,
Currently you cannot change the resolution from within the session. This is normal and expected behavior.
Unfortunately this means you need to set the desired resolution before connecting by using custom .rdp files, manually within the Remote Desktop Client, custom web launch page, custom windows launch program, etc.

Hello, dear Colleagues.
User with administrators rights cannot change printer properties on "Advanced" tab from "Devices and Printers" on Windows Server 2012 R2.
If to launch "Devices and Printers" on server, all printer properties on "Advanced" tab are inactive (see screen below).
But I can change it manually with "Print Management". Features become active.
The main purpose - to uncheck "Enable advanced printing features" with powershell
scripts.
$erroractionpreference = "continue"
$colPrinters = Get-Wmiobject -Class win32_printer -computername print_server -Filter "Name like 'printer1' or Name like 'printer2' or Name like 'printer3' or Name like 'printer4' or Name like 'printer5' or Name like 'printer6'" # get printers on server and filter with names
ForEach ($objPrinter in $colPrinters) { # get printer details from WMI
If ($objPrinter.RawOnly -ne "True") { # check that Advanced printing fetaures is turned on
Write-host $objPrinter.Name
Write-Host $objPrinter.RawOnly
$objPrinter.RawOnly = "True" # Untick and update the object in WMI
$objPrinter.Put()
It works on Windows 7 workstation, but does not on print server Windows Server 2012 R2 with error
Exception calling "Put" with "0" argument(s): "Generic failure "
At \\print_server\c$\DisableAdvancedPrintingFeatures.ps1:8 char:17
+ $objPrinter.Put()
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
+ CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [], MethodInvocationException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : DotNetMethodException
Can you help me with that? Look like somethings with rights.
Thank you.Hello, Alan
Morris.
Thanks for your reply.
I've tried to runs PS Script both locally and remotely, previously running Powershell ISE as Administrator.
I've noticed interesting thing - if to
check "Enable advanced printing features"
manually thru Print Management snap-in, script works fine. But, time to time after some manipulations on print server, this advanced feature returns to enabled state automatically by system, I think. In this case PS Script does not work. Next, if to disable
feature manually again (thru Print Management snap-in),
and enable manually again, PS Script will work. Very strange situation.
Thanks. -

How do I change the URL to the Remote Web Access server in Windows Server 2012?
Hallo!
I have set up a Remote Dexktop Service using the "Quick" deployment method in Server Manager and everything is working greate internally, but I cannot start an app published in Remote Web Access from outside our network.
The problem is that it wants to start the using the internal URL, for example, server.domain.local, instead of the external one, for example remote.server.com.
I therefore want to know how I can change the default URL for the Remote Web Access server and all the Remote Web Apps in Windows Server 2012?
I have allready looked in Server Manager and I can change some of the deployment settings in server manager, but there is no way to alter the URL of the Remote Web Access server. See below images:
Pressing the internal URL only results in opening the internal URL.
This was very simple to do in Windows Server 2008 R2 using the tsconfig tool, but it does not seam to be any way of solving this in server manager.
A possible sollution would be to alter the registry someware in HKLM->Software->Microsoft->Windows NT->Terminal Services. But this can easaly lead to problems due to wrong format, etc. and is probably not supported.
Is there a simpler and supported way?That option can be used to connect to any machine that you want. The error message indicates that the client machine cannot resolve the name "server.domain.local" to an IP address that it can connect to.
You have several options for configuring that tab on the RDweb site. You can even remove it entirely.
Customization of RD Web Site
RD Web provides a number of customization options for the RD Web interface, including the ability to control default Gateway server settings and redirection settings. These settings
are controlled by editing the web.config file located in %SYSTEMROOT%\Web\RDWeb\Pages.
Displaying Local Help
To display local help for users instead of the web-based help, edit the LocalHelp value and change the value from false to true.
<!-- LocalHelp: Displays local help for users, instead of the web-based help. Value must be "true" or "false" -->
<add key="LocalHelp" value="false" />
When this value is changed, a user that clicks on Help in the upper right corner of the RD Web login page will open the local help file instead of web-based help.
Hiding the Connect to a Remote PC Tab
The RDWeb page
Connect to a Remote PC tab can be hidden from users to prevent connections to any servers through RD Web other than the servers configured in a collection. By default, this setting is set to true and the
Remote Desktops tab is displayed. To hide the tab, set the value to false.
<!-- ShowDesktops: Displays or hides the Remote Desktops tab. Value must be "true" or "false" -->
<add key="ShowDesktops" value="true" />
When the value is set to false, a user will not see the Connect to a Remote PC tab when logged on to the RD Web page
RD Gateway Settings
If the Connect to a Remote PC tab is enabled, an administrator can configure RD Web to use a Gateway server when connecting to remote computers. To specify a gateway, edit the below
value with the name of the RD Gateway server:
<!-- DefaultTSGateway: Admin can preset this to a given Gateway name, or set to "" for no gateway. -->
<add key="DefaultTSGateway" value="" />
The default authentication method for the RD Gateway server can also be configured by editing the following section of the web.config:
<!-- GatewayCredentialsSource: TS Gateway Authentication Type.
Admins can preset this.
0 = User Password
1 = Smartcard
4 = "Ask me later"
-->
<add key="GatewayCredentialsSource" value="0" />
Devices and Resources
By default, only Printers and Clipboard are redirected on connections made using the Connect to a Remote PC tab. If the user clicks the
Options << button, the redirection settings for a specific connection can be modified
To configure each specified redirection option to be enabled or disabled by default, edit the following section in the web.config file:
<!-- Devices and resources: Preset the Checkbox values to either true or false -->
<add key="xPrinterRedirection" value="true" />
<add key="xClipboard" value="true" />
<add key="xDriveRedirection" value="false" />
<add key="xPnPRedirection" value="false" />
<add key="xPortRedirection" value="false" />
LAN Experience Defaults
Windows Server 2012 RD Web Access can display a new user selectable option for optimizing the connection for a LAN experience. This option is displayed at the bottom of the RD Web
page and can be controlled by the administrator using the following section of the web.config file:
<!-- Checkbox to opt for optimized LAN experience -->
<add key="ShowOptimizeExperience" value="false" />
<add key="OptimizeExperienceState" value="false" />
This value is set to false by default, but when changed to true, the following checkbox will display at the bottom of the webpage. The LAN experience
checkbox can also be set as enabled by default.
Each setting can also be modified using the IIS Manager user interface:

Server 2012 R2 Essentials Role: How to change the port numbers?
Hi All,
I've installed Server 2012 R2 on a Hyper-V guest, and then installed the Essentials Role on it. I've setup the role, and can access the dashboard. However the client I have has only one static IP - and Exchange/IIS running on the Hyper-V host. So the normal
ports for Access Anywhere won't work. I'd like to have the Access Anywhere respond on a different port - say 9999 for example. Then I can configure port forwarding on the router to pass it through, and have it working correctly as an SBS replacement. I messed
around with the bindings in IIS, but that didn't really solve the problem. I thought that would be it - but I suppose it's possible the service isn't meant to run on another port?
Has anyone had any luck in changing Access Anywhere to respond on a different port?
Thanks!Hi,
Based on your description, I understand that you want to change the default port of Anywhere Access. Please
refer to following thread and check if can help you.
WSE

If anything I misunderstand or any update, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
Hope this helps.

Is there a way to change the Windows Update service startup type on Windows Server 2012 R2?
We have a number of newly built 2012 R2 servers that we have HP Operations Manager agent running on that monitors the status of several services and reports if they are "stopped". One of these services is Windows Update. Every day we
get at least one alert saying:
"Service "Windows Update" is not started. Current state is stopped"
Checking the event logs shows that the Windows Update service stops, then a while later it just starts again. Not an error, just an information event.
In Windows 2012 R2 the Windows Update service is set to "Automatic (Trigger Start)", where in previous versions we run (2012/2008R2) it would be set to just "Automatic" or "Automatic (Delayed Start)"
I have come to understand that this behaviour is normal for Windows 2012 R2, and that Trigger Start services by design stop themselves after a period of inactivity. I was unable to find any info on how this works. Our client would like this to
be changed and the Windows Update service stay running all the time, understanding that this impacts performance.
Is there a way to change the Windows Update service in Server 2012 R2 to the old Automatic startup behaviour so that it stays running all the time instead of stopping and starting periodicall? There is no option to do this via the services mmc
gui.
So far I have tried:
Removing the Triggers using the command: sc triggerinfo wuauserv delete
This works temporarily, the service then shows as just Automatic in the services console, however if you restart the server or restart the service it goes right back to being Automatic (Trigger Start).
Any kind of help would be appreciated.This one might help.
