Character Display in old application

Hi there,
I am continuing updates on a VB6 program MyReels: at http://www.ozemail.com.au/~lmstearn.
It runs surprisingly well under Windows 8.1 for XPSP3 compatibility.
Unfortunately, there are now problems with character display that weren't seen in Win 8.0 or prior.
For example
Ellipsis "…" now displays as
ligature "æ" now displays as
(The two vertical lines on the right in the images can be ignored.)
Is there some kind of compatibility patch I can use to correct this?
Thanks for your interest!

  • OO4 character Display Problem

    Hi All,
I am using Oracle OLE objects to connect to Oracle 9.2 DB
The NLS Language for the Database is AMERICAN_AMERICA.AR8ISO8859P6
the client is using also the same NLS.
When I retrive the information using OO4 some varchar2(Arabic Language) are return incorrectly from the DB, however when I use ADO on the same clinet it's correctly retrive all Data.
I've only on home at my PC, and its NLS language is correct, even when I use SQL*Pluse the characters are displayed correctly.
I also retrieved the NLS_LANG from the application using "SELECT USERENV ('LANGUAGE') FROM DUAL"
and it was correct using ADO and OO4.
Of course I've checked the registry value NLS_LANG and it's also AMERICAN_AMERICA.AR8ISO8859P6
    Any Help????

I think after all it is a problem with the either:
    a. OS installer, which should really try to delete fonts which are duplicated by new system fonts
    b. OS which should give precedence to new system fonts over old system fonts where there are two the same, especially when the system fonts are in /System/Library/Fonts and the old ones are in /Library/Fonts

  • Old Applications & files won't open in OSX-Tiger/Classic

    [post moved from other forum]
I finished my Powerbook's hardware upgrade with success yesterday(with thanks to JPL, Sig, A_Brody and other's great advice). System is now Powerbook G3 400 Firewire with 512mbRam, new 40GB HDD, and OS-X Tiger. However...
I can't seem to get the older Applications or their files to open. I get the error message:
"There is no default application specified to open the document Appleworks 6"
    and/or
"Could not be opened because the application that created it could not be found--- could not find a translation extension with appropriate translators"
    The upgrade/update procedure included...
===Back-up all files on the old 10GB HDD to an external USB drive.
===Remove old and replace w/new 40GB HDD, also install new 512MB PC-133 RAM module in lower slot.
===booted from old OS CD and ran Hard drive set-up utility with two partitions, one 30GB the other 10GB.
===Install OS 9.0.4 from that original Apple software CD onto the first 30GB partition.
===Onto same partition, ran OS-9 Update 9.1.0, then 9.2.1, then fireware update 4.1.8f5, then Update 9.2.1
===Installed OS-X Tiger onto the first 30GB partition
===Moved all backed-up files from the external USB drive onto the second 10GB partition.
I have tried running the old applications in both OS-X Classic mode and also after changing the "Start-up Disk" to the smaller partition (which should be a clone of how the original Hard drive was set-up i.e. folder structure etc.)
I'm quite surprised that when re-booting to the smaller partiton, that although it looks just like my system prior to upgrading, the apps don't run and the files don't open those older apps that created them. I assumed that the smaller Partition--and booting to it--would be the same as if the original Hard drive was still in the powerbook.
When I get those error messages above, I have followed the "Choose Application" button thru to where I could choose the application. I follow to the "Applications (Mac OS 9" folder to where the actual APPLEWORKS 6 app (for exmaple) is located, but it is greyed out and can't be selected. BTW later I did copy all of the contents of the original "Applications" folder from the backed-up HDD into the OSX "Applications Mac OS 9" folder. Also note, the apps in that folder are listed as KIND "Unix Executable File". The files (in this case AppleWorks files) are also listed as that file KIND.
===In the OSX's System Preferences/System/Classic/Advanced tab, I have tried the REBUILD DESKTOP procedure--with no effected change. I know I read elsewhere in discussions that there was a procedure to re-boot with a certain keyboard held-key combo that allows to re-build desktop upon booting?? I don't remember the keyboard combo. And,not certain how that procedure is different.
===In the change Start-Up disc Utility, I now see four Systems to choose from...
Mac OSX 10.4 on New 30GB HD
Mac OS 9.2.2 on New 30GB HD
Mac OS on Old 10GB HD (that's the smaller partition),
Mac OS 9.2.2 on New 30GB HD
    Network Start-up
Both the second and forth choice will boot-up to OS 9.2, but as mentioned the apps won't run and files won't open
I'm guessing the reason the third choice won't boot (it reverts back to OSX Tiger when I try) is because that original System copy is OS 9.0.4 (backed-up prior to running the OS-9.1 and 9.2.1, 9.2.2 updates.). Also note, when in OS 9.2.2 when I go into that Utility... Apple/Control Panels/Startup Disk it doesn't list the old OS on the smaller partition. BTW could I now run/perform the OS-9 updates to bring that System on the smaller HD partition up to OS-9.2.2 with out causing problems (and maybe providing solutions?)
    I wonder...
??? Why would I be having to choose which application would open an application---wouldn't an app open on its own (Unix Executable File")
??? When I moved the orig HD back-ups on the external USB drive I noticed a file with some kind of PC icon was being created within the folder. Currently I see that the file is now displayed as FINDER.DAT. Does this file relate to the error that refers to "appropriate translators"? Could the Apple Macintosh files being backed-up onto an external USB drive that may not have been formated as Apple HFS type be causing a problem?
??? Why wouldn't the smaller 10GB partition with the old HDD back-up copy moved to it not function like the original Hard drive? Particularly when I choose to boot to its SYSTEM w/Start-up Disc? BTW when I choose that route, the powerbook just boots to OSX Tiger.
THANKS for any replies, you all have been a great help with the challenges of upgrading...
    MSG-PWRBkG3
    PS:
Sorry for the long post. But, I have included as much up-front details as possible to assist in your replies. I also want to help others reading this thread later on as to what (correct or incorrect) procedures were followed... to help them see how these in-compatibility scenerios would be similiar to their situations... leading to solutions for all.

Thank you for including as much detail as you did. It makes it much easier to troubleshoot this type of issue. What I'll do is basically follow along with the procedure you used and point out where you (unknowingly) ran into problems.
"Back-up all files on the old 10GB HDD to an external USB drive."
Okay, I'm betting that this external USB drive was formatted as PC-Exchange/Windows format. Since this type of disk format doesn't have native support for the special "Mac" information about files (such as resource forks and HFS metadata like file type and creator codes), when Mac OS writes files to these disks, it needs to use a special method. When you copy the files from OS 9, OS 9 adds special "FINDER.DAT" files and also stores the resource-fork-parts of the original files inside a "RESOURCE.FRK" folder on the disk. My FAQ goes into more detail about this. When, from OS 9, you look at the files you just copied to the PC-formatted disk, and they appear identical to the files on your original 10 GB hard drive, that is in fact a complete illusion. The files as they exist on the PC-formatted disk are very different from what they appear. When you hook it up to your OS 9 Mac, the files appear fine, and you can copy them and have them work just like the original files did. If, on the other hand, you hook this PC-formatted hard drive up to your OS X Mac, it looks at the files in a completely different way. If you copy the files off of this disk from OS X, most of the files won't be usable.
"Remove old and replace w/new 40GB HDD, also install new 512MB PC-133 RAM module in lower slot."
"booted from old OS CD and ran Hard drive set-up utility with two partitions, one 30GB the other 10GB."
"Install OS 9.0.4 from that original Apple software CD onto the first 30GB partition."
"Onto same partition, ran OS-9 Update 9.1.0, then 9.2.1, then fireware update 4.1.8f5, then Update 9.2.1"
"Installed OS-X Tiger onto the first 30GB partition"
"Moved all backed-up files from the external USB drive onto the second 10GB partition."
If you did this from OS X, you will run into problems, whereas if you do this from OS 9, you'll be okay. The reason for this, as I mentioned above, is that OS X doesn't know how to "see" the files in the same way that OS 9 does.
This is what I would do. Make sure you still have the PC-formatted drive with the files you backed up from OS 9. Reboot into one of your versions of OS 9 that works properly. Hook up the external USB drive, and the files on it should appear properly and function properly. Now copy the files over onto your local hard drive and they should work properly as well. The files that you copied over from OS X won't be useful and can be deleted. Then reboot into OS X and you should be all set.
    Hope this helps....

  • UTF/Japanese character set and my application

    Blankfellaws...
a simple query about the internationalization of an enterprise application..
I have a considerably large application running as 4 layers.. namely..
    1) presentation layer - I have a servlet here
    2) business layer - I have an EJB container here with EJBs
    3) messaging layer - I have either Weblogic JMS here in which case it is an
application server or I will have MQSeries in which case it will be a
    different machine all together
    4) adapter layer - something like a connector layer with some specific or
rather customized modules which can talk to enterprise repositories
The Database has few messages in UTF format.. and they are Japanese
    characters
My requirement : I need thos messages to be picked up from the database by
the business layer and passed on to the client screen which is a web browser
    through the presentation layer.
What are the various points to be noted to get this done?
Where and all I need to set the character set and what should be the ideal
character set to be used to support maximum characters?
Are there anything specifically to be done in my application code regarding
    this?
Are these just the matter of setting the character sets in the application
servers / web servers / web browsers?
Please enlighten me on these areas as am into something similar to this and
trying to figure out what's wrong in my current application. When the data

    Hello Manesh,
For the database I would recommend using UTF-8.
As for the character problems, could you elaborate which version of WebLogic
are you using and what is the nature of the problem.
If your problem is that of displaying the characters from the db and are
using JSP, you could try putting
    <%@ page language="java" contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8"%> on the
    first line,
    or if a servlet .... response.setContentType("text/html; charset=UTF-8");
Also to automatically select the correct charset by the browser, you will
    have to include
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> in the
    jsp.
You could replace the "UTF-8" with other charsets you are using.
    I hope this helps...
    David.

  • Non-Latin Character Display On Web Page

In a Java web application, only one non-Latin character display issue is that when they are typied into a JSP file. Otherwise, non-Latin characters display correctly from the message property file or from database.

Perhaps check the names of all the files involved? What type

  • Chinese Character display issue on Coldfusion 10

My Company using Coldfusion to built an report platform and recently I upgrade our Coldfusion 7MX with Windows Server 2003 to Coldfusion 10 Enterprise with Windosw Server 2008 R2.
I copy the Code from the Old server to the new one, but I met the problem I couldn’t solve.
We have a repost that can enter, modify and view our SRM that has Chinese Character display request. Chinese character was display without problem when the system in the old server. which look like following.
once I move the code into the new server, I got the problem with Chinese Character as following.
This report pulling the data from SQL2005 with Windows Server 2003 R2.
Coldfusion code code was same and both version is access to the same database.
I ran all of the update included to install the windows MUI for Chinese character into the new server,  but I still can't get the character display correctly.
I can view the chinese character website without issue but only to display in the report.
I contact with Microsoft tech support but they don't have an solution for me. please help.

Install windows server language pack:  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=12250
Are you sure the Chinese is encoded in UTF-8?  (It should be, but you should check the database field type encoding.)  If it's simplified chinese it could be set to GB18030 and if it's traditional chinese it could be Big5.
You might want to leave off the encoding directive in CF and load the page in a browser then change encodings using tools > encodings  to see what works.

  • Character display problem latin characters

For some reason old fonts show latin characters when i type "o/" and "l/". The problem seems confined to old fonts (at least Geneva; Monaco; New York), so I guess it is a bug?

I think after all it is a problem with the either:
    a. OS installer, which should really try to delete fonts which are duplicated by new system fonts
    b. OS which should give precedence to new system fonts over old system fonts where there are two the same, especially when the system fonts are in /System/Library/Fonts and the old ones are in /Library/Fonts
The major annoyance is that this problem appeared with Leopard and took me hours of searching to figure out its origin - when you don't know if it is a character entry problem (which I thought) or a character display problem (which it turned out to be). In the end the fix was simple - delete the superceded fonts.

    Hi All,
When ever capital 'w' (i.e W, plain,Dialog and size 11) is first character in a text field left upper portion is not visible. But if I change any of these properties( i.e plain,Dialog, size 12) there is no problem.
Can any body suggest me how can I display 'W' correctly with these propeties(i.e W, plain,Dialog and size 11).

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
    1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted from the disc, the USB device, or Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.

If you want to change your iCloud ID or password on your phone go to Settings>iCloud and tap Delete Account, then sign back in with your updated information.  Note: this only deletes the account and any synced data from your phone, not from iCloud.  Provided you are signing back into the same account and not changing accounts it will be synced back to your device when you sign back in.

  • If I no longer have the old application Backup installed on my Mac (part of the .Mac subscription), do I still need the folder called Backup, that is in my Library in the Application Support folder?

If I no longer have the old application Backup installed on my Mac (for performing scheduled backups of data on the computer), do I need the folder called Backup, that is in my Hard Drive, to Library, to the Application Support folder?  (There is no Backup folder in my Home Folder, to Library, to the Application Support folder.)
Backup was part of the .Mac subscription I used to have, and I have not used it since I gave up being a .Mac subscriber many years ago.  In fact I recall Apple saying at one point that they no longer supported the Backup Application.  I assume the Backup folder is just remnants from when I used to have that application, however I could be wrong, and don't want to trash the folder unwisely.
As I looked through the various items in the Backup folder, nothing appears to be modified since 2007, which further confirms that this folder is from long ago when I used to have that application.  I did notice that the main Backup folder itself was the only thing that had a more current modification date on it.  That date coincides with the date that I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac earlier this year.  But I'm assuming that any operating system software installation will place a modification date on all the various folders of one's computer, with the date the new OS was installed.
Any insight will be appreciated!  Thank you!

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.
    Best.

How do I remove old applications from my new Macbook Pro that were part of the data that was migrated over from my older iMac?
    Thanks

If the applications were originally drag and drop installations you can simply drag them to the trash and empty. If they were installed by an installer there should be an uninstaller included. If you're not sure you should check with the software developer for instructions. In this case Google can be your friend.
