If an app is listed as free in the store then it is free to download. Some apps, including free-to-download apps, allow you to then make in-app purchases within them (e.g. to unlock extra levels or features in games, or to subscribe to newspapers/magazines etc), but you can turn off the ability to do in-app purchases on your phone via Settings > General > Restrictions > In-App Purchases 'off'
If you add or change credit card details on your account then you might see a temporary store holding charge applied to it to check that the card details are correct and valid and that it's registered to exactly the same name and address as on your iTunes account - it should disappear off your account within a few days or so. You can create an Apple ID without a credit card by following this guide exactly: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2534. Note that you have to start by downloading a free app, then create the ID.

I purchased my iPad in 2012 when I was in United States.
Earlier, I was able to install free applications such as LastPass and Chrome.
Now, when I try to install any free application such as TalkingTom, I was asked to provide my credit cardinformation.
I wondered why Apple needs my credit card information when I try to download a free application.
When I entered my credit card information, I have got an error message that I need to visit India iStore.
But, I have got a mail from my credit card bank that Apple charged me INR 60/-.
1.) Can anyone tell me the procedure to get my money back?
2.) How do I visit India iStore from my iPad to download any application?

So the entire time that you saw a price on the button and Buy on the button, you didn't realize that you would be charged?
The iWork apps are normally paid apps unless you qualify for them for free. And when you qualify to get them free, the button says free.
You will receive an emailed receipt for the purchase. Use the Report a Problem link to make your request for a refund. It may or it may not happen. Apple considers all sales final. -
Will i be charged for downloading it from my account which had the app while it was still free?
Some apps are written for the iPhone. Some are written for the iPad. Some are universal and will run on both.
That app is NOT universal. That means you must purchase a separate version of the app for iPhone and iPad. The iPad version will NOT run on the iPhone.
In these cases, the iPhone version of the app usually WILL run on the iPad, but it will be window-boxed when running (or expanded and unable to take advantage of the iPad display).
Pay attention when making a purchase if you want it to run on both. If it does not have a + in the price box, it is not universal. -

I just found out that Apple charged my credit card for USD1.00 for downloading a FREE app like Hay Day on my iPad. At first when I sign in using my Apple ID, I it prompted me my credit card information. I thought it was just for verification purpose only. Later today, I received atext message from my bank telling me that Apple has charged USD1.00 on my credit card. Apple... Please explain!

For last three days I am being charged for downloading different applications. some of the applications I did not even see on my phoneIf you believe that your account has been hacked, then change your password, let your credit card company know and ask them about reimbursement and let itunes support know that you may have been hacked.

When you post for help, please tell us which MacOS X you have installed.
Install the appropriate combo update ...
For v10.6 Snow Leopard > Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
For v10.7 Lion > OS X Lion Update 10.7.3 (Client Combo)
Then restart your Mac. That will reinstall the App Store for you.
See if you can download an app. -

then credit card details will need to be entered before the account can be used to download any item (free or paid-for) from the store.

This has been a constant gripe of mine. No, Apple doesn't pre-authorise for free apps, but your account must be "ok" to download a free app.
I use a pre-paid debit card for all my online purchases, simply to ensure nobody gets more than they're entitled to. But the only issue I've ever had is with Apple's pre-authorisation. Generally when purchasing an app, I'll check the balance on my card first to ensure I've enough. But inevitably Apple will pre-authorise €1.98. This sometimes has the effect of setting the debit card account into the red when Apple attempts to take the amount for the app. So I'm left with an app I haven't paid for (no issue there) and 2 unpaids on the card. The problem is that when my kids come to me looking for yet another free app, I can't download because my Apple account is not in order. A real pain.
The solution though is simple. Set up another account without a card and use that to download free apps until such time as I'm ready to put money on the debit card and sort out the account.
Basically, Apple shoots itself in the foot with constant pre-authorisations.
I've been onto support several times about this, but they seem to give stock answers tha don't address the issue. Oh we'll. -
I have purchased an app from the app store and cannot seem to download it, the download statrs and then rapidly cuts out, it will not complete and seems to repeatedly go over the same few Mb. I have previously downloaded large files and not had a problem with them.
I have tried restarting, checked my hard disk (and repaired a sector of the disk) and checked my connection but this seems to have no effect. I have also disabled virus protection and my firewall to see if this has an effect. I have also downloaded other (free) applications to test it since then and some of these download but not the larger ones. Has anybody else encountered this? Does anyone know how to solve it?Can you download large files from other places apart from the App store, wondering if it is the App store or your internet connection.

If it's an app then does it allow you to make in-app purchases within it ? If it does then you can turn off in-app purchases via Settings > General > Restrictions on your device.
