Checking Swap space from OS level in HPUX

Hi All,
We have some issues with swap in our SAP production system when I checked the ST06 Tcode
Swap
Configured swap     Kb    20,971,520     Maximum swap-space  Kb    54,389,460
Free in swap-space  Kb     8,945,160     Actual swap-space   Kb    54,389,460
And when I checked from the OS level ,it gave me the following result
swapinfo
Kb      Kb      Kb   PCT  START/      Kb
TYPE      AVAIL    USED    FREE  USED   LIMIT RESERVE  PRI  NAME
dev     1048576  658208  390368   63%       0       -    1  /dev/vg00/lvol2
dev     19922944  889824 19033120    4%       0       -    1  /dev/vg00/lvol9
reserve       - 19423488 -19423488
memory  33417940 24781076 8636864   74%
Does it mean that total swap space is (1048576 + 19922944)KB which is 20GB?
If yes ,then how to increase the swap space in UNIX based systems?
SWAP SPACE = 3*RAM? If yes ,do we need to put swap size =60 GB?
In ST06
what is the difference between CONFIGURED SWAP-SPACE and ACTUAL SWAP-SPACE?
Regards,
Prashant

Hi,
Thanks for ur reply but when I checked it from OS level why it is showing only 20GB ?
What's the diff between configured and actual swap space ?
I checked SAP Notes :146289 and 153641
They clearly says that swap space should be atleast 20 GB plus 10 GB for additional Instance for the server.
In our landscape we have CI and 4 dialog instance connected to it
that means our swap space should be 20 + 10*4=60 GB
We are having HPUX server and ST06 Swap values are
Swap
Configured swap     Kb    20,971,520   Maximum swap-space  Kb    54,389,460
Free in swap-space  Kb     8,697,960   Actual swap-space   Kb    54,389,460
Do we need to increase the SWAP Space to increase the system performance?
What is difference between configured swap and actual swap space ?
SAP Note 1112627 clearly says that SWAP SPACE = 2* RAM for HPUX servers.
What do you guys say about this?
Regards,
Prashant

While taking archive backup by oem, only 9 archive process consuming more swap space.
The parameter value is LOG_ARCHIVE_MAX_PROCESSES=15 at db level.
Why only 9 archive process use swap space at os level?

    Physical memory 120 GB,Swap space 45GB.
We getting TOP consuming SWAP space PID's from OS team. Then we checked v$session with that PID's.We found that PID's belongs to archive processes.
Nealry 25 log switch per hour happened.the log file size 8gb,8 groups. Then REDO log files is is way too small by around a factor of SIX
Increase REDO log file size to 50GB to reduce the number of switches per hour to around 3 0r 4.

    Dear All,
Currently I am facing a most interesting problem regarding swap space.
We have assigned mirrored slice swap space with 20G size. But when we are asking for swap space it is only showing around 2GB.

    Hello,
    Thanks for your reply.
But I am not clear about your findings as we have around 64GB physical RAM in my machine.
My question is that if we mount 20GB swap partition, then how we can see this is around less than 2 GB in df -h command.
And even in swap -s command, this is showing same problem.
What might be reason behind this????
//PalashWell no-one else has anwered ... so its back to me.....
Hmmm ... i would use the word observations rather than findings .... I am not on an old root explotation expedition all over our server .. merely observing on the morsels you show me ....
Please be aware I may not be totally technically correct or be using right terminology on what follows so I welcome corrections ....
Your machine has 64GB Memory, and a 20 GB swap file, therefore has the ability up to support 84GB total (Virtual) Memory ofr it's processes/buffers.
The reason little swap is free (let us say 2GB ... thoug it may be 600m) is theat processes/buffers have a virutal memory requirement of 84GB-2GB = 82Gb.
... So rather than wondering about how come 2GB is left, start thinking about ow 82GB is being used.
...... Particularly with databases oracle RDBMS; mysql etc a big influencing factor can be how much memory is allocated its memory structures.
.......... And a DBA may set these extremely high (memory_max / innodb-buffer-pool-size etc etc).
ps -ef will show the (virtual) 'size' for individual processes
prstat -a may help show what is going on (but may double account some things):
ipcs -a would show the allocation for the oracle RDBMS memory_area,
echo ::memstat | mdb -k ### may help ... but i have seen accounts of it taking ages to run.
I'd also check kstat zfs ... but your not using zfs so no need to bother.
.... You may need to show some evidence of how your applications are consuming virutal memory for someone to help you futher ... but if you do htis who may answer your own quesiton.

    Hi brothers and sisters,
Hope all you are fine. I am facing swap space problem while installing Oracle Developer Suite 10g on Windows 7 . I have downloaded and installed Oracle Database 11g Express Edition successfully and it is working properly. Now, I have downloaded two files
    a. ds_windows_x86_101202_disk1,
    b. ds_windows_x86_101202_disk2
to install Oracle Developer Suite 10g using Windows 7 Ultimate. The Oracle Universal Installer have passed the following issues:
    a. Operating system version,
    b. Monitor
But while checking swap space, it gives a message, "0 MB available, 1535 MB required", Failed. I have 2 GB RAM installed and system managed paging file space which is currently allocated to 2038 MB in my system .
    Please solve me the problem.

  • OUI complains about zero swap space? [solved]

I am upgrading my OAS 10.1.2.0.2 to 10.1.2.2.0.
When I start the OUI that is part of patch 4960210, it reports the following:
Checking swap space: 0 MB available, 1535 MB required. Failed <<<<
    I cannot continue the installation.
I am installing on Windows XP Professional (this is my personal development instance). My laptop has 4 disks, C:, D:, E:, G:. OAS is installed on E: and this is where I unzipped the OUI. The C:, D:, and E: drives each have a system managed paging file that have pagefile.sys files of 2,088,308 KB in size.
    Free space is: C: = 2.84 GB, D: = 3.73 GB, E: = 22.1 GB.
How can I overcome this check?
    Message was edited by:
    Angrydot

I manually set 1600 MB swap spaces on my C: and E: drives and the OUI passed this check.
Apparently, the pagefile.sys remains after a reboot but is not an indication of the amount of swap space allocated. maybe Windows does not allocate swap space until it is needed when the virtual memory is system managed.
Anyway, set the swap space manually to the amount needed by OUI. I will set it back to system managed after the install.

  • Checking disk spaces on hdd of oracle database

    Hi ,
I am using Oracle 9i is there any pre-written procedures/functions that can be used for checking the hdd space ?
I believe in Oracle EM , it's able to set a job to detect low hdd space ?
    appreciate ur advise
    tks & rdgs

    What harddisk space?
Oracle does not need to keep track of actual harddisk space available - it after all uses the space inside the data files assigned to its tablespaces. It does not care about how much space is left on the harddisk.
You can make an operating system call to determine the amount of free space on a file system (harddisk) - but you have no idea what your/Oracle's space allocation is on that file system. Other Oracle tablespaces can have data files on the same file system. Archive logs and redo logs could also perhaps exist on that file system. Free space that may no longer exist in 30 seconds time.
So even if you make this "what is the percentage free space" call, the result itself is totally meaningless as you cannot determine how much of that file system (harddisk) space is usable for your Oracle data file or tablespace.
Also, such an Oracle data file can be a raw device - in which case the operating system itself is clueless as to how much space has been used and not used on that raw device. So you cannot even make an o/s call to determine used vs free space utilisation.
The correct method is to look inside Oracle only. The data files allocated to Oracle is the actual space that has been allocated for Oracle. Period.
You can only deal space wise with the amount of space assigned via these data files to Oracle. You can determine how much space is left. Some of these files may be auto extending - but you have no idea whether or not that auto increase of the file size can be serviced and fulfilled by the operating system.
Thus checking harddisk space from inside Oracle for any type of Oracle db space management is pretty much a useless exercise IMO.

  • Swap space failed

After I downloaded oracle 10g windows version and installed on windows XP pro, I got the message,"checking swap space 1512 available, 1535 required. Failed".
Then I bought 512 MB memory. However, message remained the same. What do I do next. Thanks.

Increase your swap space. Right click mycomputer icon> Advanced>Performnce options>Change virtual memory. Increase it by atleast 500mb. You swap shuld be atlest 1gb while you are using 512 rman.

  • I want to update my Mac from 10.6.8 to Mavericks, but every time it says update unavailable for this computer. How do I check for space available or how much space I  have used? Help please, I am new to using Mac computers.

I am a new Mac user and I bought a refrubished Mac that has Mac OS X VERSION 10.6.8. I have been wanting to upgrade to Mavericks, but every time I go to do that a message comes up saying OS X Mavericks cannot be installed on this computer. Is there anyway I can instal it? Better yet how can I look up how much GB of memory I have and the available storage?

    1. No, but you might be able to upgrade to Lion. Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check that the computer has at least a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU, and if so, click here.
    2. Check the RAM from the About this Mac window, choose Computer from the Finder's Go menu, control-click the internal drive, and choose Get Info. If the computer has a 32-bit EFI, it can't be upgraded to Mountain Lion or above regardless of the RAM and free drive space.

  • How to check list of users from OS level with type and validity AIX+DB2

    Hi,
We have 40 clients in our ECC -PRD system. we do not have authorizations to login all clients , only we have 000 accessonly.
we need to check all users type and validity in the system. can any one please help me this script.
    regards,
    balarami

    Hello,
Yes you can check the user validity and tye from OS level with DB script.
ORACLE SQL scripts : I assume that schema for your system as sapr3.
    First you check the table fields by desc sapr3.usr02;
    then can select these fields for user as select <field name1>, <field name2> from sapr3.user02 where uname=<required user name> and mandt=<client>;
check exact details before you execute script @ ORA level*
If you want to see logged on users - you can see them with your '000' ID for all 40 clients.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I keep Warp Stabilizer and aeselflink from filling my swap space?

    Hello,
I'm running the lastest version of AE on OS X, when I try and run warp stabilizer on a composition, aeselflink grows the virtual memory it uses (> 50GB) until it fills my swap space and causes my machine to hang, because the hard drive is full.
Running AE's Edit->Purge options has no effect on the amount of virtual memory used.  I have to quit AE to get aeselflink to quit and free the memory used.  How can I limit the virtual memory used by aeselflink to something reasonable?

I'm not aware of a way to control this in any more detail, but this stuff obeys the settings you make in the Render Multiple Frames Simultanuously prefs if used. Otherwise it will use factory defaults which should never use more than 4GB. Anyway, the behavior you see is highly irregular no matter what. Sounds like a memory leak, so maybe you can provide more info, including which AE version, what footages etc.

  • My hard drive icon has gone from finder. how do i check available space?

I normally check my available hard drive space by clicking on the icon hardrive in finder window.  However in Lion its not there. where is it?   How do i check available space?

Go to Finder Preferences (in the Finder menu) > General tab, make sure the item "Hard Disks" is checkmarked. Once it is, your hard drive's icon should appear on the desktop in the rightmost column.
You can also maintain a quickly viewable summary. In Finder, go to the View menu and select Show Status Bar. That will add a narrow area at the bottom of each Finder window. In that area will be shown the amount of free space remaining on the drive, as well as the number of items in that folder.

  • Decreased min free swap space

    Hello everyone,
due to technical problems, in 07/Dic/2005 we had to replace a disk in one of our cluster server of SAP R/3 Enterprise. We also increased its level security from RAID 0 to RAID 5.
But today we have detected than since that moment, the min free swap space has decreased considerably, from 12800 KB (approx.) to 1100 KB (approx) !! (with ST06 transaction). The replaced disk has the SAME characteristics of the previous one
How can we solve this situation and return to original swap space values? Which is the optimal configuration of swap space in SAP and Windows 2003 Server?? We have two nodes in a cluster (one with the application server and one with the database), and each one has 4Gb of memory.
Current commit charge values of Windows 2003 Server task Manager are:
    Commit charge (K):
    Limit: 7931568
    Peak: 7925732
This is the SAP answer to the note I opened:
"Please ask your hardware partner about this. At the moment I do not know anything about the symptom on other customer systems. My opinion is that the workload has been changed, thus increased peak values. Please look at the installation guide "
    Can yoy help me?

    Hi Oskar,
    My suggestion:
Activate NT performance monitor and try to identify
the time when you have peak usage of swap and application that caused it. To my knowledge, even 12800 KB free swap is not acceptable amount (at least, there should be couple of hundreds megabites available). Check your process monitor to see what applications take much memory. If you replaced your disk on the C: drive of the other MSCS node, I don't see any ways that this replacement could affect to the other node swap size. (I am assuming that C: drive is not sharing through the nodes)

  • Swap space problem on Windows XP

I'm trying to install BI Publisher on Windows XP from a zip file downloaded last week (version 10.1.3.3.2). However after starting setup.exe in the install directory I get the message that my swap space = 0 Mb while 500 Mb is required. After this the installation procedure quits.
I haven't got a clue as what the installer is referring to (swap on windows?) but I have plenty of room om my two (logical) disks, no spaces in the directory name from which I start the installer (D:\download\bipublisher\Windows\OBI\install) and about 1.5 Gb of memory free.
Any hints what to do would be appreciated.
    tia,
    Martin

    Hi Mjb001,
In computer operating systems that have their main memory divided into pages, paging (sometimes called swapping) is a transfer of pages between main memory and an auxiliary store, such as hard disk drive.[1] Paging is an important part of virtual memory implementation in most contemporary general-purpose operating systems, allowing them to easily use disk storage for data that does not fit into physical RAM. Paging is usually implemented as a task built into the kernel of the operating system.
Windows 3.x creates a hidden file named 386SPART.PAR or WIN386.SWP for use as a swap file. It is generally found in the root directory, but it may appear elsewhere (typically in the WINDOWS directory). Its size depends on how much swap space the system has (a setting selected by the user under Control Panel → Enhanced under "Virtual Memory"). Please check this file.
