Chrome Back Is It Metal or Plastic?

The Chrome looking back on the iPod, is it actually metal or plastic that just looks like metal. It feels like metal, it looks like metal, but I just don't know for sure.
Anyway?

It is indeed metal. When tampered with in the right (Or wrong would be a better description) way, it can give you a nasty shock. plasic wouldnt do that. Also, if it were chromed plastic, the chrom would scratch off and it would be really unattravtive.

  • Scratches on back

This is my first iPod and is clearly a very gorgeous piece of kit. I love it. However, I do think the fact that the (lovely) chrome back is so susceptible to scratching is a design flaw. I mean, clearly the thing to do is to buy a case at the same time and put it oh so carefully into it as soon as possible but that ought to be made clear to potential buyers. Also, what is the point of designing a portable gadget like this which is pretty much unusable out of the box unless you are prepared to let it get badly scratched? It ought to come with some sort of basic protective sleeve or something in the box. Also, with a clear warning on the packaging that handling this item at all in its 'naked' state may damage it's appearance irrevocably.. I know I'm not the first person to bemoan this design feature and I'd be interested to hear what other people think.
The reason for this mini-rant? I bought mine the other day, took it out of the box and carefully laid it down on a piece of paper on my desk (I am very careful with and very fussy about items like this). Then I moved it to a wooden shelf. When I picked it up, unaware of the afore-mentioned fragility, it brushed very slightly against the wood and when I looked at the back it had suddenly acquired a series of little scratches. Superficial and small barring a couple of slightly longer ones but enough to really annoy me, given I usually take great care not to scratch pieces of expensive kit. Grrr..
So I am currently awaiting the availability of a proper case, which will take a couple of weeks. Meanwhile I'm almost afraid to use it in case I scratch it more (I have a couple of rings on my hands e.g.) and I am keeping it in a soft camera case wrapped in a cloth. I know there are plenty of cases out there but any recommendations for something that might be available in Ireland?
Also, does anyone know of any way to remove the scratches without doing further damage? They're really only on the surface of the metal. Any sort of polish or other product/method that might help? Thanks.

I've come across people using Brasso and similar products but I can only imagine that would make it worse. Has anyone tried anything like that?
I suppose a certain amount of scratching is inevitable but a coating on the rear as foxcub 6 suggests or a very thin laminate or something, would be a very good improvement. I own several other pieces of kit, mp3 players, a psp and so on, that I have had for years now and they all look in great condition and I don't have to keep them permanently housed in cases, though they're all stored in them when not in use. With this baby, less than 1 hour out of the box and absolutely minimal handling and there's visible damage. C'mon Apple..
In terms of cases, my preference would be to have a protective case to keep it in but to be able to take it out and use it and admire its sleek curves in 'safe' conditions, rather than have it permanently hidden in a cover. I was looking at the Griffin leather one for example. Any other recommendations along these lines? Thanks again to all who have responded.

  • Screen: glass or plastic?

I searched for information about the screen of the Classic wether it's glass or plastic, but couldn't find. And in case it's plastic: is it also easily scratchable as the previous iPod generation screens?
I hope you guys who own a Classic can tell me.
    Thanks!

In the digital camera section of a camera store or (?) they sell little "screen covers". I got some free with my Canon ditgital camera. You cut them to size to fit any screen, and I use those not only on my IPod screen but also on that finger-print prone chrome back. I covered the whole back and sides with these screen covers and you can hardly tell they're there. Not only does it keep the back from getting scratched, it also keeps it from getting all full of fingerprints.

  • Iphone 4's glass back

So with the ip4's back made of glass, there have already been a ton of complaints with scratches and shattering. The good news is the back is very easy to remove and replace. Do you guys think third-party suppliers would make a back made of different material? like metal or plastic?

Anyone who wants to protect both front and back (my back already has a couple scratches on it, and I have a case on it) order these on eBay. $.99 for 2 protectors (one for front, one for back). I ordered 3 sets for a total of $2.97, free shipping.

  • Chrome Protector until you get yours ordered/delivered.

Hey guys, I (like many of you) am worried about scratching my chrome backing until I get my cover that I ordered. Well today I found a quick fix until then and guess what!? Apple gave it to you in your box! I just took the plastic screen protector (with the tab on it) and peeled it off and put it on the back. I know it's not enough to cover the edges, but at least you can set it down now without worrying about it!

yeah you do have it. when u first get your ipod touch it comes with some plastic wrap on it, stuck on the front to stop it from scrathing in the box, just keep it on basically. although you probably threw it away already

  • Optical Drive Gets Stuck On Metal Door

    Hey Folks!,
My only discontent with my G5 is that my optical died way too early. So, I put in a new Samsung super drive today and it seems that things are responding correctly however, the plastic tray keeps running into the back of my metal door. Of course, the result is that both the tray and the door get stuck halfway, thus impeding my DVD tray from opening. does anyone know what I can do to fix this problem? Always appreciated.
    reuven

    Hi-
First, did you take the bezel off the tray? The tray front needs to be bare, or things hang up.
If you did that, then the stand off screws may be the wrong ones. There are two versions of screws, each for different drive makes.
Phillips head screws are for Sony drives, and the hex head screws are for Pioneer and Toshiba.
Which screw would be correct for the Samsung, though, I'm not sure. Comparing the old drive to the bew drive will tell you if you need to go up, or down.
Some people with the wrong standoffs have reported getting by with slightly loosening the standoff to raise the drive.

  • Headphone socket chrome plating coming off

Has anyone else noticed the headphone socket isnt metal and that the chrome has worn off to reveal plastic and copper edging??
It looks awful. What are the chances off Apple replacing or repairing this?
Its surely defective material or workmanship?

i wouldnt consider it 'normal' wear and tear. ive used headphones like 15 times.
And even if i used headphones everyday the coating shouldnt be coming off like that.
And i thought it was metal, not some horrible chrome plated plastic.
Would still love to hear from Apple on this or anyone else with this issue.

  • Preview and safari do not display images in a pdf, where as chrome will. How do I fix this?

I'm on the newest OS X Yosemite and I have an issue with viewing pdfs in both preview and safari. The figures show up fine from Chrome. This also leads to the issue of when I try to print off the pdf. The images do not appear in the printed version.
    Safari/ Preview:
    Chrome:

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
              Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
              Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • Windows XP; Adobe Reader XI; Google Chrome

I have an old PC running on Windows XP with Adobe Reader XI installed and my browser is Google Chrome. No problems up until recently when (I don't know how) my PC was 'invaded' by a 'browser hijacker' called VOSTERAN which, according to all the websites I visited, is a VERY bad thing. After a lot of trouble, I eventually got rid of Vosteran but this involved uninstalling and then re-installing Chrome. So I got Chrome back but then found I had a problem with PDF documents (which I hadn't had before).
I was trying to print off a page from a particular website (which I'd successfully done previously) but found that, when I clicked on the Print icon, it was immediately replaced by a Save icon - in the form of a PDF document. So I saved the page (because I could no longer just print it) to my PC but then found that I could neither open nor print it. I just got an error message from 'Adobe Reader' which said "Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience".
I tried all sorts of other options such as "Open With" etc. but still nothing.
Then I found that I could no longer open (or print) any PDF document which I'd previously saved on my PC! So I uninstalled and then re-installed Adobe Reader (several times) but still without success. I also searched online for possible answers (for a long time) but nothing I've tried has worked.
So .... is this a problem with my PC? Or with Adobe Reader? Or is there something in Google Chrome 'interfering' with my being able to open and print PDF documents - which it didn't do before (I've tried all the troubleshooting tips on Chrome).
Please help as this is driving me nuts!

Try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
P.S. note that Chrome uses its own PDF viewer, not the Adobe Reader plugin.

  • Which is better: Firefox or Chrome

I'm trying to decide which browser I should use as my primary browser. I know that most of the people here will say Firefox, but I'd like to hear a more detailed explanation on why. Thanks!

Speed, performance, and feature wise, Firefox and Chrome are pretty equal (a few Ms off here and there for speed, a few rarely used Web standards, and different implementations of features are minor quibbling points).

  • I want to go back to Mountain Lion please?

Just installed Mavericks this week and I am more than underwhelmed (by that I mean I hate it). I need to get my google chrome back. Does anyone know how to get me back to where my computer worked right?

Without a doubt you don't want to use Chrome with OS X. It's a resource hog and prone to crashing the system. Please stick with Safari to avoid problems.
If you want your computer "back where it worked right" then erase it and reinstall your previous OS. It might be easier and less painful to do this:
Disconnect all peripherals except the standard keyboard and mouse. Disable all third-party peripherals and their software. This includes Chrome.

  • 135 error when downloading pdf with Chrome

Love Google Chrome but have had a frustrating week with pdf downloads coming up with error codes and scrambled or blank pages since updateing with 9.3.3  .  Thought the problem was originally from installing Win Office 2010 Pro when I discovered the problem.  Uninstalling Win Office Pro and trying all possible fixes for 9.3.3 were to of no avail.  Thank god for the massages left in this forum.  It looks like there is some work to be done with compatibility issues.  Will try IE to see if I have success similar to others but would like to have the chrome back and working with Adobe!!!  Hope to see a Fix ASAP!

Back again, 11:14 EST 8/12/10 .  Just uninstalled the non working version of 9.3.3 and reloaded again  from the Adobe site.  Finally the pdfs are downloading without errors in Goggle Chrome on my 64 bit system!!! Hooray.    Will be extra cautious with future upgrade downloads; as this seems to be when the trouble started.
