Cisco ASA OSPF Routing
Hi All,
I'm looking to connect a Cisco ASA 5525 firewall that will provide primary internet access to our core network. I want the ASA to learn routes from our core and advertise a default route by OSPF.
I'm happy with the basic configuration here but I'm wondering if there is any advatange to have the ASA sitting in a non-backbone area instead of area 0. Are there any best practises with this scenario or is connecting the ASA to area 0 perfectly acceptable?
Thanks,
Hi Will,
I Suggest you to keep your ASA in Area 0, instead of non-backbone area.
I assume your asa will be having one end connected with LAN/Core LAN and other end with the public segment right.....
Then you can have the basic configuration set on ASA, as simple as possible...
router ospf 1
router-id 1.1.1.1.
network 1.1.1.0 255.255.255.0 area 0
timers spf 1 10
log-adj-changes
You will be running the OSPF between your edge router and asa....
Please correct me if my understanding is wrong.
Regards
Karthik

Cisco ASA static route Administrative Distance
Hello Dear Engineers,
In Cisco ASA 8.2(5) version I configured Static Route Floating with different Administrative Distances (for example, 10) , but IOS cannot accept this parameter. for verifying, show route command result shows administrative distance as 1 .
Configuration example:
ip route 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1 1 track 1
ip route 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.2.1 10
S 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 [1/0] via 192.168.2.1, outside2
Is this the bug of the IOS, or may-be I misconfigured something?
Thanks in advance.Hi Samir,
Even Pix 8.0 version shows the correct ad value defined..... might be that would be a bug or misconfiguration from your end.

Cisco ASA 5505 Routing between internal networks
Hi,
I am new to Cisco ASA and have been configuring my new firewall but one thing have been bothering. I cannot get internal networks and routing between them to work as I would like to. Goal is to set four networks and control access with ACL:s between those.
1. Outside
2. DMZ
3. ServerNet1
4. Inside
ASA version is 9.1 and i have been reading on two different ways on handling IP routing with this. NAT Exempt and not configuring NAT at all and letting normal IP routing to handle internal networks. No matter how I configure, with or without NAT I cannot get access from inside network to DMZ or from ServerNet1 to DMZ. Strange thing is that I can access services from DMZ to Inside and ServerNet1 if access list allows it. For instance DNS server is on Inside network and DMZ works great using it.
Here is the running conf:

Yep, Finnish would be good also =)
In front of ASA is DSL modem, on the trunk ports is Hyper-V host that uses the trunk ports so that every VM has their VLAN ID defined in the VM level. Everything is working good on that end. Also there is WLAN Access Pois on one of the ASA ports, on the WLAN AP there is the management portal address on DMZ that i have been testing agains (192.168.3.4)
If i configure Dynamic PAT from inside to the DMZ then the traffic starts to work from inside to all hosts on DMZ but thats not the right way to do it so no shortcuts =)
Here is the conf now, still doesnt work:

Cisco ASA - BGP or OSPF support on Multicontext Firewall?
Hello Forum,
I would like to know why is the limitation of Cisco ASA in multicontext mode that it is not able to run routing protocols like OSPF, BGP?
if I see SRX firewall, you can cut that virtually and can configure BGP, OSPF routing instances with virtual firewall.
is there any possibility in ASA product to run OSPF, BGP in multicontext mode?
comments are welcome...
Thanks
DaveTo answer your question, Cisco wants its customers (or at least used to want its customers) to use the ASA as a firewall and not a router. So you would have one device that is your firewall and one device that is your router. I suppose they started to realize that customers are looking for an all in one device, so they started adding routing features to the ASA, and firewall features to the routers, yet the firewall still doesn't have all the routing capabilities of a router and the router doesn't have all the firewalling capabilities of the ASA.
You can speculate that this is a marketing ploy so you are required to purchase more devices, or you could look at it in such a way that it is best practice to seperate all functionality in the instance that a device does get hacked.

: endThank you one more time for everthing. It is workingin indeed
Reason why maybe sometimes I had some 'weird' results was because I had all devices connected to the same switch.Separtated all networks to a different switches helped.Anyway if you could take a look one last time to my configuration and let me know if it's good enough to deploy it on live ( only www for all , ssh restricted from outside, lan to dmz) .Thanks one more time.

Cisco asa 5505 with Router 881w Configuration Help
Hello all,
I'm having trouble setting up a second vlan to route to the internet. I have a Cisco ASA 5505 connected to my ISP(OUTSIDE) and a Cisco 881w (INSIDE) router in the back of my firewall. My vlan 10 with the network 192.168.5.1 255.255.255.0 works with pat, however vlan 15 that is on my 881w router does not route to the internet at all. I can only ping from 192.168.15.15 network to 192.168.5.1 I would like some advice on how can I make this set up work. Attached with this discussion is a picture of my topology.
Thanks in advance.

Cisco ASA 5505 VPN Routing/Networking Question
I have a very basic question about Cisco ASA 5505 IPsec Site to Site VPNs. I want to install a Cisco ASA 5505 at a Data Center, in a LAN subnet that utilizes publicly routable IP addresses. I would like to install a second Cisco ASA 5505 in a remote branch office as its peer.
Regardless of whether I use publicly routable IPs at the branch office in the "inside" network or non-routable IPs, how would the devices and servers at the Data Center know to route IP packets destined for the branch office back through the Cisco ASA instead of through the default gateway at the Data Center? I can see accomplishing this if every single device at the Data Center is configured with routing table entries, but that isn't feasible. It also isn't feasible to use the Cisco ASA 5505 as the default gateway for all of the devices as the Data Center, allowing it to decide where the traffic should go.
What am I missing? Is the solution to try to map branch office IPs to IP addresses within the Data Center's LAN subnet so that all of the traffic is on the same subnet? You can do it in several different ways.
One way is to tell the server that if it has traffic to network x then it needs to go to the ASA all other traffic is to head for the default gateway.
In windows this is done via the route command
do not forget to make it "persistent" otherwise the route will disapear when your reboot the server.
in unix/linux
It is also the route command
Or you can tell your "default gateway" to route that network to the ASA
Good luck

Cisco ASA - 2 Site to Site routes needed for failover -Is possible?
3 physical sites. 2 ASA 5510 (routing mode_). 3rd site is in between ASA sites. 2 different connections. Depending on which link goes down, a certain set of Network Lists for Site to Site VPN is needed to place the 3rd site subnets where they belong depending on which link dies. The tunnels all work. Here is my wonder: Can I automate this somehow in my environment (all Cisco 3750/3560/2960) so that I can leave both tunnels in place so that if either link dies, the appropriate tunnel is picked for failover? Running 8.03 code on ASA. Using EIGRP (love that protocol). Anyone have any ideas?
You can implement failover or loadbalancing . Use this configuration examples for your configurations.

Cisco ASA 5505 - 2 questions - VPN Licensing; Routing
Hi,
I have a client that has a Cisco ASA 5505 security appliance. Currently it is setup as a "proof of concept" for clientless browser-based SSL VPN. The device came with 2 licenses for this service, and we need to increase that somewhere between 10-25 users. 25 users is the max on this device I believe.
I have searched Cisco.com and tried Googling the ASA 5505 for licensing but I can't find the correct license that I need for this.
The second question I have is routing capability. We have a WAN connection to another branch of the computer from this location where the ASA 5505 is located. A Cisco 2851 is used for this connection. We are wanting to bring in a high speed Internet connection for the VPN access and Internet access. What I need to know is can we put the WAN and Internet connections behind the ASA 5505 and have that route appropriately to the branch WAN for that traffic and all other traffic to the Internet?
Thanks!

I don't hve any NAT-exemptions in Cisco IOS Router. Transform-set I will change soon, but I've tried with tunnel mode and it didn't work.
Maybe NAT-exemptions is the issue. Can you advice me which exemptions should be in Cisco IOS Router?
Because on Cisco ASA I guess I have everything.

Its lists the following for software level 9.0(1)
Multiple Context Mode Features
Dynamic routing in Security Contexts
EIGRP and OSPFv2 dynamic routing protocols are now supported in multiple context mode. OSPFv3, RIP, and multicast routing are not supported.
Seems to me you would need some 9.x version to support the above mentioned Dynamic Routing Protocols.
I don't think its related to the hardware model of the ASA other than that it requires a model that supports Multiple Context Mode. To my understanding the only model that doesnt support that is ASA5505 of the whole ASA5500 and ASA5500-X series.
Hope this helps

ASA, IOS : 8.0.2
4506, License IP Base; OS: Unisal 15 M.2
I checked between ASA with Router ok; but between ASA with 4506 error
Can you help me ?Hello,
This logs means that the hold time expired so the hello packets are not being received, usually means multicast packets are missed-224.0.0.10)
I would recommend you to try another cable because this ussualy is a phisical or congestion issue.
Can you try that and let us know the result, also if that does not help can you send us the following outputs:
-Show ip EIGPR neighbors
-Debug EIGRP packet hello

Is there a way to upgrade a Cisco 866VAE router to support the OSPF routing protocol?
I work for the government and we purchased a Cisco 866 VAE router for a project. Our base network runs OSPF routing protocol and we need to know if there is a way to upgrade the router that we purchased to support this protocol.
Thanks for any assistance,
James ReynoldsHi,
I have searched through both the data sheet and the 800 series config guides and
it looks like there is NO support for OSPF for this router family.

Thank you in advance for your prompt advice! If you do a show crypto map in the router you will see the VPN traffic to be "any to any".
This is due a known bug on Cisco routers. The router does not support object-groups network for the VPN traffic. Use a regular ACL instead. -
