Class not found w/ rmic

Hi all,
I've basically read through about 20 threads and none of the solutions thus far have worked for me. I'm trying to get some RMI classes up and running. Half of them compiled with rmic, half of them didn't; the ones that failed were those that have dependencies (specifically the ROME project).
I tried running rmic -classpath . -d . foo.web.services.remote.impl.FeedImpl and it gives me several errors saying that various classes in com.sun.syndication.feed.synd.* could not be found. I'm running the command from the root directory (i.e., the directory that contains the 'foo' folder). The JARs containing the missing classes are in this root directory.
* I've tried resetting the classpath ("SET classpath=") before executing.
* I've tried running the -depend flag.
* I've tried initializing the registry first. No idea why that would help but apparently it worked for someone.
Since the classes that do not have dependencies are running fine, I'm pretty certain this is a classpath issue.

A classpath item is either a directory where a .class file can be found, in a subdirectory corresponding to its package, or a JAR file name. If you want the JARs included in the classpath you have to name them; naming the directory they're in doesn't do it.
