Classic programs installed as admin

Hi everyone, new poster here. Anyways, I am in the process of setting up 10 new mac OS X comps at the school I work at. We have had a bunch of OS 9 comps ion each classroom and the teachers want to be able to use their current software. So, I installed the OS 9 software when logged in as admin. When I switch to the 'student' account, many of the programs fail even though they worked fine as admin. Any ideas?? I also want to set up the studetn account as 'simple finder.' I don't have the time for tech support in each classroom so the more security on each comp, the better. I appreciate your help.

Although I haven't encountered any myself, I get the impression that some old Classic applications just don't work very well with a multi-user arrangement. One thing that often helps in allowing the use of Classic programmes to proceed more smoothly is to select the option configuring Classic to use preferences from the user's "home" folder ("System Preferences" > "Classic" > "Advanced" > "Use Mac OS 9 preferences from your home folder" (this should be set while logged in to the "student" account).
Another issue is that some programmes (eg. AppleScript apps that contain modifiable "properties") may have to have the permissions of the actual application modified so that the prosepective user has "write" access.
Just a note regarding "Simple Finder" - be aware that unlike a "Some Limits" account, "Simple Finder" does not actually prevent the user from using programmes that haven't been selected.

  • Classic program installed but grayed out

I am trying to run an old version of Final Draft screenwriting software on a Powerbook G4 with Tiger and thought I could do it in OS 9. The program installs from the cd successfully and a demo version, that cannot save, runs fine. But when I try to open a new file in the program or one of my old files, the application is grayed out in the finder and not available in any menu.
What am I not doing? I'm pretty sure I am in the classic environment when I do this. The software works in Windows XP and used to work in an old Mac. Is the software somehow incompatible with new Macs?

  • Is there any way to make a Classic program run on a Intel Core Mac Mini?

My mom just got a new Mac Mini with the intel core processor and she wants to be able to run a rabit pedigree program from her ancient little mac that ran OS 7. Now it says that you can't run classic programs on the intel core processors, but is there any way to get around this? Say converting the application some how, or maybe even installing OS 9 some how as an alternate operating system or any such thing? Or should my mom just start looking for a different pedigree program and start reentering all of her information now?

Try this, UneasySilence.com has a guide on how to use SheepShaver to run Mac OS 9 on an Intel Mac.
    http://www.gibix.net/dokuwiki/en:projects:sheepshaver
"Who said you can't use MacOS 9 because you have an Intel Mac? It is completely possible with a little bit of tinkering, and a really cool universal application called Sheep Shaver, which came to us via a tip from Kazaki. Sheep Shaver is a full speed 'Classic' emulator for Windows, Linux, and Intel based Macs, that runs older MacOS's at shockingly full speed!"

  • Classic or instal OS9?

I may be a bit dense, but I can't find a definative answer after much searching all over the support area. Here goes.
I am giving away my B&W, but still want a way to run classic programs on my non-intel imac G5 isight, running 10.4.10. I have been reluctant to update to 10.4.11. I do not remember installing Classic last time, and probably didn't, having a computer to run the old programs just across the room.
What I am unsure about is how best to be able to set up the imac to run the few old classic programs I still have, and not impact the files there now.
I thought about an archive and install, but do I have to go that far?
Do I just need to install Classic support and is this an option?
Do I need to install OS 9 as well, (I have the proper 9.2 universal install CD) and if so do I have to do an erase and install partitioning the hard drive?
I will create a copy of my isight's hard drive onto a firewire drive, using the utility provided on my Data Rescue CD. I have repaired permissions after doing a serious clean up of unwanted files.
I feel dumb...I have avoided learning and absorbing this information before because I have had a separate bootable hard drive running 9.2.2 on my B&W G3 (which I upgraded to a G4 years ago). Please help and tell me what's next.
    Thanks

Some clarification of what's possible with 9 and not:
    1. Mac OS X 10.0 - 10.4.11 can run Classic on PowerPC Macs. Intel Macs can not run Classic, nor can they boot into 9. 10.5 can't run Classic, but 10.5 on pre-2003 Macs 867 Mhz and faster will dual-boot into 9. Dual booting into 10.4.11 via separate partitions or Firewire hard drive, or second internal drive preserved the ability to run Classic on Macs which supported Classic.
    2. New Macs released after 9.2.1's release in 2001 could no longer use a retail installer disc to install 9 onto them and had to use the installer disc for Mac OS 9 that shipped with them to install Mac OS 9. Use this article to determine which Macs those were:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
    3. Beginning with new Macs in August 23, 2002 a separate 9 installer disk was no longer provided with new Macs, and instead the restore disc instructions were needed to install 9 on those Macs. This coincided with the release of Jaguar in August
    4. Beginning with new Macs in 2003 booting into 9 no longer was possible, but
    Classic would run.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86209
separates which Macs those were in each model.
    5. Beginning with new Macs in 2006 the CPU was replaced with an Intel CPU. Previous Macs used a PowerPC CPU.
    6. October 26, 2007 Mac OS X 10.5 was released.

We have a complete CC business membership and currently have the programs installed on 2 computers but need to add them onto a 3rd. Can we add a licence to our membership or do we need to purchase an additional membership?

If you have Creative Cloud for teams, and you bought the licenses through Adobe direct (via Adobe.com), you can add licenses yourself, and they will be invoiced automatically as you get invoiced for the other two licenses.
Log into adobe.com with your team admin Adobe ID and password.
Once logged in you should be able to access a Manage Team option from the menu.
In the top-right corner there should be an Add Licenses button, that lets you purchase any number of additional licenses.
If you've not purchased through Adobe direct, but through a reseller, you'd need to contact your reseller to add the additional license.
    Hope this helps,

  • Can't run programs from non-admin account

I'm new to the Mac and rusty with -- but not new to -- UNIX. I'm working with an iMac running OS X 10.2. I have installed several programs in a non-admin account (called "boys"), but they will not run from that account. The "get info" screen tells me that the "boys" account is the owner of the program. Read/write permission is enabled. When I try to run the programs, I get this error message: "The operation could not be completed because you do not have enough access privileges." I have installed the same programs in an admin account, and the programs run just fine from that account. I'd like to get this working so that the boys in the "boys" account can actually use the system. I have "inherited" this system from prior users. Programs that were on the system when I got my hands on it do run -- for the most part -- from "boys."

Thanks for the reply, Ken. My various unsuccessful attempts to solve this problem led me to create a folder named "Programs." (I know, my PC roots are showing.) I did this for two reasons: 1) I hoped that this would give me more control over what was happening; and 2) I wanted to give the children with whom I am working an easy way to find the programs that I want them to use. When I use < cd /users/boys > and then do an ls- l, I see the Programs folder. An ls -l on that folder shows all the program I have loaded and indicates that the "x" permission is applied to owner, group and others. Moreover, I assumed (incorrectly, perhaps) that installing the programs using the "boys" non-admin account would make them the "owner" of the programs and that "x" permission would follow. Well, ls -l indicates that they are the owners and that they do have execute permission. I can only guess that the prior users of this system -- and nobody in this organization seems to know where they are -- did something that requires more than Advil to overcome.

  • Hi! Classic programs running slowly in Panther?

Hi! I am very happy with OS X generally - have been a Mac user since 1993 - but I do have a question I hope someone can help me with.
Here it is: if I upgrade from Jaguar to Panther, will I lose performance in classic? I have an iMac g3 SE 700 at home, at here at work we have two eMacs (1.25 gigahertz). My computer is dual bootable and has 10.2.8 installed; the computers at work have OS 10.3 and are not dual bootable. My classic programs on my little iMac are very fast - not so with the classic programs at work. They all run very slowly, even though the machines themselves are much faster.
I would like to upgrade to Panther (probably the latest system my iMac can run reliably) in order to have the best possible internet applications. I've also heard that Panther runs more quickly and reliably than Jaguar on older machines like mine (though I haven't had a single problem with Jaguar). So I'm considering purchasing a bootable DVD of Panther, but am a little concerned that my classic applications will be affected if I do install it. Is this a common problem? If not, I will certainly get the DVD.
    TIA!

    Hi maryj59!
"...So I'm considering purchasing a bootable DVD of Panther..."
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
If your iMac meets the Panther System Requirements, and you upgrade, you may actually notice an improvement in the performance of Classic.
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
Additional Panther Install & Upgrade Tips
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Tiger is also still available for purchase, at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."
Download the Media Exchange Program Order Form Here. Note that the date on that form is March 19, 2007, but the program was extended to reflect Orders must be mailed by June 22, 2007.
I suggest that if you choose that route, call Apple to ensure that is is still available.
AppleRescue, also sells a Tiger installation set on CD.

How do I locate and remove incompatible programs that are preventing Firefox from displaying on my screen? I have the latest Firefox program installed, but I cannot get it onscreen. I ha ve removed Babylon, or at least I have performed the recommended steps to remove it and it no longer appears on my computer's list of installed programs. hello ralph, does it work when you press the shift key while launching firefox in order to access firefox safemode - then you can do a reset to revert most of the settings to the factory default.

  • Installing Weblogic Admin Server as service -  service won't start

The problem lies in your additions to the script installSvc.cmd
Say we have for example the following directory as our middleware-home
c:\bea. In this directory we also have installed a JVM say C:\bea\jrockit_160_05_R27.6.2-20.
When you create a domain (by using the config.cmd script) the domain you created
is placed in the directory c:\bea\user_projects\domain\base_domain (assuming we have
    called the domain base_domain).
Now we have to add the following parameter definitions to installSvc.cmd
@rem JAVA_VENDOR and JAVA_HOME are set in the call to commEnv.cmd
@rem JAVA_VENDOR is checked in commEnv.cmd to be Oracle or Sun
    set JAVA_VENDOR=Oracle
    set JAVA_HOME=C:\bea\jrockit_160_05_R27.6.2-20
    set USERDOMAIN_HOME=C:\bea\user_projects\domains\base_domain
    set SERVER_NAME=AdminServer
    set DOMAIN_NAME=base_domain
@rem i am assuming it is running on localhost
    set HOST=127.0.0.1
set PORT=7001In your case it becomes (just a guess)
@rem use Oracle instead of BEA
    set JAVA_VENDOR=Oracle
@rem the location where your JVM is installed
    set JAVA_HOME=C:\bea10_64\jr
@rem if bea10_64 is your middleware home and PA_domain is your domain name
    set USERDOMAIN_HOME=C:\bea10_64\user_projects\domains\PA_domain
@rem the rest should be alright
    set SERVER_NAME=AdminServer
    set DOMAIN_NAME=PA_domain
    set HOST=10.0.1.28
set PORT=7001If you add the following to uninstallSvc.cmd you can uninstall the service
    set SERVER_NAME=AdminServer
    set DOMAIN_NAME=base_domain

  • Can't install Server Admin Tools 10.6.2

Running Snow Leopard Server on a new Mac Mini Server and have had no trouble updating software through Software Update. I would like to install Server Admin Tools 10.6.2 but it is not picked up by Software Update, and when I downloaded it, the installer would not let it install "on this disk. Server administration software must be installed on the same volume as Mac OS X." The volume identified but blocked out IS the Mac OS X volume. Any ideas?

you should ask in the snow leopard server forum.
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=264
however, while I don't run os x server I'm quite sure that you should have server admin installed already if you have a server. that's probably why Software update is not picking it up.

  • Word says there's no email program installed to email a document, but there's an app on Windows 8. Any help?

I have windows 8 on my laptop and love it so much.
I like using word, but sometimes don't want to have to save random files to email them.
I go to the save and send option in word, then click send as attachment. An error box appears:
'There is no program installed to send this blah blah blah. If there is already a program installed create a link in default programs'
HOW DO I GET TO DEFAULT PROGRAMS??!!!!!!!
I click OK and it says MAPI error. I saw that if you go onto 'fixmapi.exe' this is corrected, but that didn't help at all.
    Plz someone help?
(the mail app works fine, but it would be so much easier to send straight from word)

as far as I know, for this scenario, an "app" is not suitable for this purpose, because word requires a "program", not an "app" for this function/feature.
I guess if you have Word, that means you have some kind of an Office installation in place, but, is it an edition of Office that doesn't include Outlook?
