Clean up after each system upgrade

Hi,
After each upgrade my system increase its disk usage.
I type "pacman -Qet", and there is a lot of packets, but I'm not sure is it safe to delete them.
Which is the best rule to follow about cleaning the system, using pacman?

clovenhoof wrote:Is it really I have to know what each packet does, in order to delete unused packets manually?
How will you know if it's needed for anything if you have no idea what that package does?
An example: what does 'git' do and why do I have it installed? Pacman shows it's not required by any package. Ah, I'm accessing some git repositories - that's why I have it installed.
You have only a couple hundred packages installed, so 'pacman -Qi <packagename>' away :-)
'pacman -Sc' should be enough to get rid of old & unneeded packages.

  • Acpi_call-git reinstallation after each kernel upgrade.

    Hi,
I use acpi_call-git and unfortunately after each kernel upgrade I have to reinstall the application in order to make it work.
    Any possible solution?

As you already said, you have to reinstall the package after each kernel upgrade, i do that with acpi_call-git , too.
There is a solution for this called DKMS .
    aur package https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=54641
Edit: I do not use dkms.

If it helps, what I did to fix it after trying a thousand other things was reinstalling the original Mavericks wifi kext using Kext Utility. I tried reinstalling Mavericks, reinstalling just the current wifi kext but nothing worked. The only answer was to reinstall the original Mavericks kext over the top of the current one and it kicked it into life again. You are looking for IO80211Family.kext - I had one from a previous installation on another machine.

  • [SOLVED] GNOME is messed up after full system upgrade

I ran a full system upgrade today (last one was about 1-2 months ago) and it went smoothly.
Everything boots normally, and my default GNOME desktop also boots, but all the icons are messed up, as can be seen in this screenshot.
And worst, the overlay panel (e.g. when pressing the Windows key) is completely b0rked and unusable.
The GNOME desktop is the default one with no modifications that I know of. I tried searching for existing issues but didn't find any.
    I'm running Intel Graphics on:
    $ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
    Any ideas?

  • Continues rebooting after installing system upgrade

    Hi
I have a HP voicetab 7. Today (10.02.2015) got a system upgrade. after installing the system upgrade, my tab is switching on but stuckup in the boot screen.
    what to do next.

    Hey @jagan_0018 ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand after a failed update to KitKat your Slate 7 Voice Tab will not boot.
    Please try the following.
    1. Download the update.zip for your device and copy the file to the root directory of an empty micro-SD card (at least 1 GB, FAT 32 format). Do not unzip this file. You can find the update.zip for your device here: HP - Drivers & Downloads.
NOTE: You will need the exact model number to locate the correct package. There are multiple update.zip recovery images available. Ensure you select the correct download for your region. If your tablet does not boot after attempting to update you may need to try both the KitKat and JellyBean images. For information on finding your product or model number click here: Finding Your HP Product Model Number.
    2. Fully charge the tablet and then disconnect the power from the device.
    3. Power off the device.
If your tablets micro-SD slot is on the side or bottom of your tablet skip to step 5.
4a. Place the tablet on a flat surface, display panel side down, with the release notch towards you.
NOTE: Before positioning the tablet with the display panel facing down, make sure the work surface is clear of any foreign objects. Failure to follow this caution can result in damage to the display panel assembly.
4b. Remove the back cover. Use the release notch to remove the back cover.
4c. Insert the micro-SD memory card into the reader slot.
4d. Reverse the procedure detailed above to install the back cover.
    5. Insert the micro-SD card into the micro-SD card reader.
    6. Press and hold the volume up button and power button at the same time.
    7. When the HP logo appears on the screen, release all the buttons.
    8. When the Android system recovery menu appears, use the volume down button to highlight "apply update from external storage".
    9. Press the power button to validate "apply update from external storage".
    10. Use the volume down button to highlight the software recovery file, update.zip.
    11. Press the power button to select the update.zip file and launch the recovery.
NOTE: Wait until the entire recovery process finishes. The device might seem unresponsive at times (multiple reboots and black screens) when it is performing the update.

  • [SOLVED] VirtualBox complaining after each kernel upgrade

I'm using virtualbox-bin from the AUR (the one with USB support) and after each kernel update this error comes up:
    I know it's actually /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv setup
(apparently VirtualBox isn't aware of which distribution it's running on)
This message comes up every once in a while (usually after a kernel upgrade) and I was wondering if I can do something about it... Should I install the DKMS package from the AUR prior to running the above command? Maybe that will shut it up once and for all.
    What do you think?
PS: The wiki says to run "vboxbuild" but /usr/bin/vboxbuild doesn't even exist.
Last edited by DSpider (2012-05-15 15:39:13)

Solved it a year later because I got tired of running "sudo /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv setup && sudo modprobe vboxdrv" after every kernel update. Hmph... After reading this and studying the virtualbox-hook package from the AUR, I decided that it's finally time to look into it.
    It's easy.
    1. Create a "/lib/initcpio/install/vbox" file (or whatever you wanna call it) with the following contents:
    # vim: set ft=sh:
    build ()
    echo "Building VirtualBox modules..."
    /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv setup
    echo "Ok."
    help ()
    cat<<HELPEOF
This hook rebuilds VirtualBox modules. It does nothing to the initrd image.
    HELPEOF
    2. Add it to the "HOOKS" section from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata usbinput filesystems vbox"
Now the next time the linux and linux-headers packages are updated, the script will kick in and the modules will be rebuilt. I used to have it during boot process and it took forever until it would load X. Haha. I remember I used to go to bathroom just after I turned on the computer... Yeah, it took that long before it was done. Anyway, I asked the author if he can perhaps create a virtualbox-bin-hook package or somehow modify it to also work with virtualbox-bin. We shall see.
Oh, and don't forget to add "vboxdrv" to the "MODULES" section from /etc/rc.conf, if you haven't done so already.

  • Blur fonts after a system upgrade

    Hello all
I've done a pacman -syu, and it did an upgrade to the kernel (2.6.23-ARCH) and i'm not sure if it  upgraded x-server too.
The question is, now my fonts (my X-server) are all blury, like without anti-alias, it's very hard to see the letters, and the resolution is all wrong. I've checked the fonts dirs, and configuration, everything is ok, i haven't done anything but the upgrade, so i don't know what could be wrong. Anyone had the same problem or knows the fix for this?
I'm putting here 2 screenshots (1 of my desktop, the other of this post)  i hope you can see my problem

  • No audio on incoming or outgoing calls after operating system upgrade

I have iphone 4.....Everything was working fine with it until today when I upgraded to iOS 5.  My condition seems to be described here in several other posts where the phone app appears to be working fine but I can't hear anyone and no one can hear me once connected.  I called tech support who advised to do a full reset....which I did many times with no luck.  Each time...the problem continued. I got one call out of the phone after the upgrade.
I tried the head phone jack solution which appeared commonly throughout but also did not have any luck.
Out of pure frustration.....I decided to drop my phone about a meter on its back side.  I figured it couldn't hurt.
Tried again...and everything is working fine now.
I have no explanation.  I did 10+ resets and it was not fixing the problem.....dropped it once and I'm back in business and everything is working normally again.

Any good news for my Disabled phone brothers?
Will iOS 5.1 resolve this freeeking bug issue?
What developers say? Apple had noticed the issue or just ignoring and tryng to be dumb as always?
    Please let me know.

  • VirtualBox is still slow after major system upgrade.

I love my arch linux setup and really only use windows for a few school projects which require it. I decided that I would install windows 7 in VirtualBox. I bought a AMD FX-8120 3.1GHz AM3+ 8 core processor with a new motherboard and DDR3 memory in hopes of better performance than my 5 year old AMD 2.8 Ghz duel core.
However, after upgrading my hardware and maxing out virtualbox settings I find no noticeable improvement in performance. CPU usage rarely goes over 50% and mainly hovers at about 30%.(Base arch setup uses about 3%)  Are there any kernel modules or virtual box plugins which can take fuller advantage of my hardware?

headkase wrote:In VirtualBox here is a setting to accelerate 2D rendering.  If I remember correctly however, that is specific to Windows XP.  Make sure you have the guest additions installed in Windows 7 and see if the acceleration setting works for that too.
I actually just figured it out. It appears that in the case of VirtualBox more is less. The fewer processors I use the faster VirtualBox runs. So when I was using 6/8 processors VirtualBox was as slow or slower than my old setup. Now with only one it runs much faster than it did. I can use 2 processors but I don't see any difference from using 1 and If 6 processors run slower than 1 I suspect it is only slightly worse.

  • Issues after backend system upgrade - unable to send config data to backend

    Hi
Our backend system has been upgraded to ABAP 7.02 SP08. Because of the upgrade, we now have a new tab on our Business System Communication Component in PI ID called "Logon Data". As the help.sap link [http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nwpi71/helpdata/en/7b/d4653fd1d3b81ae10000000a114084/frameset.htm] says, we have done the following:
Created a user in the backend system with the same roles as are contained in SAP_XI_ID_SERV_USER_MAIN.
Given the URL to the backend system in the SLD.
Still, when we try to save our Business System Communication Component, we only get a warning message saying that "Could not check logon data". As long as we are not able to configure this cache update to the backend system, we are not able to run any scenarios with WS adapter.
Anyone had any experience with this?
    regards Ole

    Hi Niranjan,
    > i have created RFC connection SAPSLDAPI but here it's using SLD_UC as RFC destination. i have deleted SLD_UC but again and again it is creating when i execute RZ70 transaction.
    >
When you are configuring SLD on ABAP side, don't delete SLD_UC because by default this RFC is used to send data to to SLD. Please follow below step to configure SLD in RZ70:
    1) On the lower right corner, click on the icon with the green card (Proposal). A POP up will appear clieck Yes.
    2) Now Enter host name and Service name.
    3) In the upper left corner, click on the match icon (Activate Current Configuration)
    4) Click on the execution icon (Start Data Collection and Job Scheduling)
    5) On POP up, click yes. And this will send data to SLD by using RFC SLD_UC. Then login to SLD and verify.
    Hope it will help...
    Thanks
    Sunny

  • I am having trouble restoring music and podcasts to my iPhone after a system upgrade that required a restore to factory settings? All I can access is purchased music.

When I upgraded to OS 6 I had to restore my iPhone 4 to factory settings and now only have access to my purchased music and only some podcasts.  Lost my playlists and most podcasts and can't figure out how to retrieve them from a old iTunes library on windows especially with the new podcasts app...podcasts no longer appear in iTunes.   Is there a way to fix this?

Its not a matter of Safari "supporting this site". Its a lack of testing on United's part that its site is compatible across all platforms. They have introduced code, script or markup that isn't fully compatible. You can try downloading Chrome or an alternate browser as a work around for now. But it is United's job to fix its site. My guess is that enough complaints will come in and they will do so, but this is an airline we are talking about.

  • Docky does not launch anymore after big system upgrade

    Hi,
I get this when trying to launch docky:
    [1111@MNAME ~]$ docky
Could not load file or assembly 'Mono.GetOptions, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=0738eb9f132ed756' or one of its dependencies.
Unhandled Exception: System.TypeLoadException: Could not load type 'Docky.Docky' from assembly 'Docky, Version=0.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null'.
I have searched and found that mono update broke docky, but people say that the problem should be fixed with docky version 2.0.7, however, I have that version and still have the same problem
    Any help?
    thanks in advance

  • After operating system upgrade my iTunes doesn't have my Apps

I updated my MacBook Pro to the new operating system today.  Unfortunately the update crashed my iphone and i had to restore it to the original settings and then restore it from my latest back up (which fortunately i backed it up today).  However, I only have about 10% of my apps on my phone.  I then went to iTunes to try to restore my apps from there but I can't find the list of all my previously purchased/downloaded apps.   Please help!

I've been fooling around and discovered a couple of problems.  I couldn't understand why apps I KNEW that i paid for and were on my phone were now showing up as a charge.  Turns out I have overlapping problems at play here.  I purchased a MacBook Pro a couple of months ago and a friend set it up for me.  Turns out that he didn't make my MacBook "authorized" for my iTunes account.   I did that and then the apps changed to show "downloaded" so I no longer had to pay to download it again.  I thought I had solved my problem.  But the apps still weren't showing up as a list for me to sync.  I downloaded a couple again, hoping that it would help me find where they were going, and it did go to the screen that showed what had been downloaded and the pages from my phone.  I tried to sync and received a warning.  Apparently my apps are all connected to my iTunes library from my old laptop (which has been reformated and given to my Mom so thats not a solution).  It says that if i sync now, i will forever lose all the apps i have in that other library.
Any ideas how to fix this?    I could start from scratch... but i hope I don't have to do that.
