Client Installation BO XI R2, only Desktop Intelligence needed

Hi,
I am going to do a Client installation of BO XI R2 SP2 on a Citrix server with Windows Server 2003.
I only need to install Desktop Intelligence!
The version we bought from BO is: 11.5.8.826. Now, I know that in SP3, there are added parameters for excluding elements and further slim down the installation to include only Desktop Intelligence. Since our purchased installation package is a lower version (SP2), is it possible to request a newer version of the setup.exe and msi so that we can perform the installation we require (Only Desktop Intelligence, Client Installation, SP4 if possibe for instance.)?
Thanks for any answers!
Kind regards,
Frode Tveit

Also service pack should not affect licensing. If you can download the client install package fromn the ESD there is no license entered during client installs anyway.
To note if you are going to add any other XI products to the client such as crystal, live office, business views, etc then you will be required to patch with the server version. If you intend to only run deski/designer then you can use the slimmed down version. This is what I've been told so far and read in the install readme's. I'm goint to be testing this client version soon as well. I'll let you know if anything changes.
Regards,
Tim

    Hi,
When you run the Client Tools installer, there is a window in which you can choose the features to install.
To perform a silent installation, you can apply this detailed article 1389365 - How to perform Silent Installation of BOE XI 3.1 Client tools.
    I hope this helps,

  • Oracle Client requirement for BO XI 3.1 Desktop Intelligence

Will the BO XI3.1 Infoview or Desktop Intelligence work with Oracle 8i Client on the user's desktop? Or do they need to Oracle client versions 9i and greater.

    Hi
for Desktop Intelligence XI 3.1 the oldest officially supported version of Oracle is Oracle 9.2 over the native client (Oracle Net Client 9.2). What you can try though is to use the Oracle ODBC driver since Generic ODBC sources are also supported.

  • Desktop Intelligence unable to connect to Oracle

Dear Experts, I have installed BO XI 3.1 SP3 on Windows 7 client laptop. I have installed it with default SQL and Tomcat. I can successfully login to CMC, InfoView and Desktop Intelligence with Admin usernamae with no password.
Now I wanted to know how I can configure it connect to an Oracle database?

    Dear Stratos,
On their server they have XI R2 n Windows 2003. But 2 of my client managers have a new laptops with Windows 7 (64-bit). They want to access DeskI from their laptop. (Infact they in terms of BO, they only use DeskI).
So I coudn't find anything other than the SAP BusinessObjects XI 3.1 SP3 (which suports Windows 7) to install on their laptop. I have10g client already installed on their laptopsas a pre-requisite.
Now to connect to the Oracle database, I did go into Control Panel, then modified the BO installation and selected "Oracle" under Database Access and installed. It did not work. So I uninstalled BO fromthe laptop. Reinstalled it and this time I selected Oracle as the database and provided the server name and the related username/password. It gave me this error this time:
"ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"
Also they already have universes made .... how can they see those univeses from DeskI?
Any help will help in this matter.

  • Desktop Intelligence XI 3.1 in 3-tier mode and a lot of Oracle sessions

    Hi All,
I wanted to set BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1 for our customers (they use BOE XI R2 now).
But I met with some problem for Desktop Intelligence in 3-tier mode (ZABO formerly).
    Configuration:
BO Server: BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1
BO Client: Desktop Intelligence version 12.1.0.882
BOE Connection Server: version 12.1.0.882 (2.0.0.29)
Product database (Data Warehouse): Oracle Server 10g
    Database client: Oracle Client 10.2.0.1
Connection type: http (J2EE Portal) u2013 Tomcat
Customer DI Documents contain 10 queries on average.
    Problem:
ConnectionServer create a session in Oracle FOR EACH QUERY from Desktop Intelligence document and BY EACH REFRESH.
    e.g.:
30 users loaded any reports simultaneously and refresh theirs:
    30 users * 10 queries (per 1 doc on average) = 301 Oracle sessions !!! (300 for queries and 1 for connection)
    second refresh: 301 + 300 = 601 Oracle sessions
    third refresh: 601 + 300 = 901 Oracle sessions
etc. while Oracle server is not down.
    For DI doc in 2-tier mode (client-server) u2013 only 1 sessionu2026
    Thanks.

Look at the XI3.0 migration guide on that site.
From page 333 onward some good info on the subject of calc. engine changes.

  • Web intelligence/desktop intelligence

Hi guys i would like to know the difference between desktop intelligence and web intelligence. When should we go for desktop and webi  given a senerio.(i am new to BO).
    Regards,
    jiyyana

    jiyyana,
    Welcome to BO
Most of the below response is from the following site posted on/about 2/11/2008; you can visit there for some ongoing discussion:
    http://www.geekinterview.com/question_details/62695
Desktop Intelligence (DeskI) Reports: These are standard "rep" -type files created from BO's full client known as "Desktop Intelligence".  The software is loaded individually to each workstation that will execute Deski.  A Deski report can be modified/viewed using the full client as well as applying all the tools/options available when using the full client.  As an added "benefit" a saved rep (Deski Report) can be imported to the XI web platform for "public" execution/view (but not for modification) -- all viewed via Infoview  on the Web Intelligence platform.
Web Intelligence (WebI) Reports:  These are standard "wid" -type files created using the online WEBI on XI and these reports can use tools and options available in Webi.  These reports are built using WebI and and viewed using either WebI (modify mode) or Infoview (read-only mode). If further modifications to a report are needed then open in modified mode, correct, report, save, and then subsequently open in Infoview in cases where no further modification is required but you just want to view and move on.
DeskI was the initial product, offered prior to XI.  When XI hit the streets, DeskI was not included, but users compelled BO to include DeskI in XI R2 and DeskI has been included ever since.  BO strategy moving forward is to include as many features in DeskI into WebI, but that still remains to be seen.  If you've never used DeskI before, then conventional wisdom is "don't", just learn to deal with everything in WebI and if it can't be done in WebI, then either look back to DeskI or consider Crystal, or something else.  If you've used DeskI, then try to learn how to do the same things in WebI and encourage the use of WebI throughout your organization.
    Thanks,
    John

  • Saving & opening migrated Desktop intelligence docs of BO 6.5.x in BO XI R2

    Hi,
I'd like to seek help on the issue that follows herein-
    Symptom:
Certain Desktop intelligence documents, particular to this customer, created in Business Objects 6.5.x environment and have then been imported into Business Objects XI Release 2. These Desktop intelligence documents, when now opened in XI R2, either through Deski Windows Client or through Infoview, and "Saved As" .PDF file on local machine and opened in Adobe Reader 7.0.0 (or versions thereafter), return blank. However, in the process of open this PDF file, if you allow Adobe Reader to connect to internet and automatically download "Japanese fonts" and install on local machine, the report opens fine.
    Environment:
Business Objects 6.5.x on Windows NT platform
Business Objects XI Release 2 (no service packs) on Windows NT Platform
Import Wizard in Business Objects XI Release 2
    Windows XP as client machine
    Desktop Intelligence Windows Client
    Infoview
Adobe Reader 7.0.0 (or versions thereafter)
    Simple reproduction of the Issue:
    1. Open the sample affected Deski document attached here, in Business Objects 6.5.x through Deski Windows client.
    2. From File menu, choose "Save As" and save to local machine as PDF file. Now open this file in Adobe Reader and verify that the file opens fine.
    3. Now save and export this Deski document to BO 6.5.x enterprise repository.
Launch Import Wizard from BO XI R2 and import this Desktop Intelligence document into XI R2.
    4. In BO XI R2, open through Infoview, "Save as" to local computer as .PDF and open in Adobe Reader. Alternately, do the same through XI R2 Deski Windows client.
    5. Now verify that Adobe Reader checks for updates from Internet and asks to install "Japanese Fonts". If you do not proceed to install "Japanese Fonts", the report returns blank.
Could you please suggest the reason for this behaviour and how to avoid it from Business Objects side?
I'd be grateful for any suggestions. Feel free to ask me further.
    Thanks in anticipation.
    Regards,
    Subhodeep

    Hi,
Please try the follwing Resolutions at your end:
    Cause
Due to difference in architecture, BusinessObjects XI R2 handles PDF files differently than BusinessObjects 6.5.x.
When the customer opens the XI R2 version Deski doc saved as pdf in Adobe Reader, it tries to check for missing fonts due to inherent nature of this report. Missing fonts usually get downloaded automatically from the internet. But the API file responsible for this, known as "Updater.api" should be present in the Adobe Reader installation on the local Windows machine. Customer does not have this "Updater.api" file in their corporate Adobe Reader deployment due to network security policies.
    File Name: Updater.api
Description: The Updater plug-in manages the list of updates that are available for the Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat products.
Dependencies: Plug-ins required for loading: EScript, IA32, SOAP, WebLink.
    Resolution
Suggested below are steps to get the "updater.api" file in Adobe Reader installation on local computer and hence allow Adobe Reader to automatically check for product updates through internet.
    Resolution 1 -
Zipped and attached is the "Updater.api" file here. Kindly download, extract and paste the Updater.api file at the following location on your local Windows machine - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\plug_ins (Note: assuming that Adobe is installed in C:\Program Files)
When done, open the affected Deski PDF document. Let Adobe Reader check for updates. It should prompt you to install "Japanese Fonts" (file name alf_jpn.exe, approx size 10Mb). Kindly continue with the download and installation this font. When done, the Deski document should open fine.
    Resolution 2 -
Uninstall Adobe Reader from your computer.
Get a of Adobe Reader for Windows XP from the following location: http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Let Adobe Reader check for updates and install "Japanese Fonts" as mentioned before. When done, the Deski document should open fine.
    Hope this helps...

  • Oracle 8.1.7 Client Installation Error

Could anyone tell me what's wrong when JREW error occur during Oracle Client Installation? How to overcome this problem?
    The details are:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
Jrew caused an invalid page fault in module JAVAI.DLL at 018f:6ee37f8a.
    Registers: ......
    (OS Win98)
    Thanks in advance.

You are aware that the 8.1.7 client is only going to enable you to connect to Oracle systems, right? It's not the Oracle 8.1.7 database.
You should be able to unzip the file and find the Oracle Universal installer which will actually install the 8.1.7 Client for you.

  • Create Client Installer Failing

I have a brand new Mac Mini running Apple Remote Desktop 3.5.1 on Lion 10.7.3 that I am trying to create a custom client installer and right at the end it fails every single time. Saying that "An unexpected error has occured while creating a custom installer. Please try again"

Do you have a computer that is pre ARD client update 3.5.2? if so, you could try making your installer with ARD on that client. And you could report the issue.
And you can always send Feedback about ARD to Apple.
In thread Can't install Apple Remote Desktop 3.5.1 custom installer on Lion 10.7.3, Eric Shaheen suggested looking in //private/tmp/RemoteDesktopClientInstaller/ to see if ARD actually did create the installer; and if so, to copy it to the desktop. in the same thread gavin0001 said he was able to modify the 3.5.2 client update to make a custom installer.

  • Instant client installation unavailable in ODBC data sources

I'm trying to install instant client to enable MS Excel to access an Oracle database. OS is Windows 7.
After installing instant client plus the odbc package, I can't see a new entry in the odbc data sources - only the standard Microsoft sources (Excel, Access, SQL Server) show up.
There's also an Oracle SQL developer installation on my computer. Connection to the database works fine in SQL developer - so the DB does exist and it is accessible.
Steps conducted during instant client installation:
    - Downloaded basic lite instant client (11.2.0.3.0) for windows.x64
    - Downloaded odbc package for windows.x64
    - unpacked zip file to instantclient directory
    - executed the odbc_install.exe in the instantclient directory. I'm not sure if this install.exe does anything at all. There was no error message but also no confirmation or reaction of any kind.
    - executing the install file from the cmd window gave me a message, that the odbc drivers were already installed. So I guess odbc_install.exe was executed properly
    - setting some system variables
         1) path variable: added instantclient directory to the ones already listed in path
         2) tns_admin: new entry, pointing to instantclient directory
         3) ld_library_path: new entry, pointing to instantclient directory
    - wrote an tnsnames.ora file using the connect information also used in SQL developer
    - saved tnsnames.ora file in instantclient directory
    - rebooted computer to activate changes
When opening the odbc data source administration, I'm only able to see Microsoft drivers for Access, Excel, SQL Server. I'd expect to get an Oracle driver option to add to the installed drivers.
Wild & uneducated guesses about what might cause the problem:
    - IC is installed on E: drive. Maybe some component is expected to be saved on C: (low likelihood, many others would have complained by now)
    - Win 7 often asks for explicit permission to do this or that via popup windows. Maybe the odbc-component encounters such a request ans says "Ummm....???"
Any idea, what I might try to get an oracle entry in the odbc data source list?
    Best regards
    Peter

I'm not sure to be honest, but what I downloaded did not have a setup.exe.
Does what you're talking about allow you to connect to Oracle databases via ODBC? If so, is it downloadble from the Oracle site?

  • GROUP BY in Desktop Intelligence

Question: Is there a way to use GROUP BY statement at the Universe level?
Detailed Example: I have Cricket Teams and Team Members. I want to display all the team members for a team in a single cell as comma separated values. At database level, I can achieve this by using an oracle function (stringagg) as follows:
    SELECT Team, stringagg(Team_Members)
    FROM Cricket_Team
    GROUP BY Team
In Business Objects Universe, I have created two objects:
    1> Team as Cricket_Team.Team
    2> Team Members as stringagg(Team_Members)
When I drag these two objects in the report I get DA0005 error (Exception: DBD, ORA-00937: not a single-group group function
    State: N/A)
This is because the SQL generated by Desktop Intelligence is
    SELECT Team, stringagg(Team_Members)
    FROM Cricket_Team
I can fix this at reporting level by customizing the SQL, but I want this to be fixed at the Universe level so that all the users can get the Team_Members list in comma separated values for each Team.
So, is there a way to get this GROUP BY Team statement at the Universe level?

    Hello,
You cannot do this in the universe.
As we are using BO6.5 the solution written below is based on that, but because deski hasn't changed much since then it still might work the same (but you need to check for yourself).
What you can do is adjust the prm-file (parameter file) for Oracle (oracle.prm).
You can find it in the folder (=our default installation folder for BO6.5): C:\Program Files\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 6\dataAccess\RDBMS\connectionServer\oracle
In the file the functions are listed which generate a GROUP BY.
    <Function Group="False" ID="Substring" InMacro="True" Type="String">
                   <Arguments>
                        <Argument Type="String"></Argument>
                        <Argument Type="Numeric"></Argument>
                        <Argument Type="Numeric"></Argument>
                   </Arguments>
                   <SQL>substr($1,$2,$3)</SQL>
    </Function>
    <Function Group="True" ID="Sum" InMacro="True" Type="Numeric">
                   <Arguments>
                        <Argument Type="Numeric"></Argument>
                   </Arguments>
                   <SQL>sum($1)</SQL>
    </Function>
Above 2 examples from the oracle.prm file whe 'Substring' will not generate a GROUP BY and 'Sum' will.
What you could do is add the 'stringagg' function (after making a copy of the original oracle.prm file) and see if it works.

  • A scheduled Desktop Intelligence report runs indefinitely on the server...

If we delete the report through InfoView or Instance Manager, the report still appears in the Desktop Intelligence Job Server metrics. We tried pausing it first before deleting it but it does not pause the report in "running" state. The only way we are able to remove it from the Desktop Intelligence Job Server is to restart the Desktop Intelligence Job Server and CMS.
Is there a different way for this? Perhaps have the report time out or something?
FYI, I've noticed that the connection server pooling timeout setting is set to no timeout. Would setting this to a certain number solve our problem?
Thank you in advance for your help!
    Voltaire Pagador

    Hi Gina,
I would assume you are after the Desktop Intelligence Processing Server - new term in XI 3.1 - formerly known as DeskI report server in R2. Feel free to let me know if this is not correct.
Steps on adding a new server in CMC are all contained in XI 3.1 Administrator's guide page 170.
The document can be found in our SMP product guide area.
In addition, it has the steps on cloning a server and deleting a server for your reference.
    Hope this helps.
