Client Replaced - Managed Preferences no longer working

An iMac on my network came down with a hardware problem, so I replaced it with a different unit. I removed the computer from Workgroup Manager, gave the second one the same name and re-bound it to OD. Workgroup Manager can see the system in the Computer List, and I can add it to the Computer Groups I need, but the managed preferences of the group don't push out to the new system. I've since tried renaming it, but the problem remains.
The groups are working with all the other Macs that belong to them and the new unit is bound in the exact same way - is there some residual of the old machine that OSX server isn't liking? I've been pulling my hair out over this one.

Hi
If you've had the logic board replaced the new board will have a different MAC address - obviously. Managing hardware using Computer Lists is actually done using the MAC addressess (ethernet hardware address). Its not enough to name it the same. You have to remove it completely from the Computer List and browse for it again. Better still make a note of the new MAC address and manually add it.
You can find the MAC addresses (as well as the IP addresses) of any networked mac/pc/printer etc by issuing:
ping 192.168.x.255
Or whatever IP address range you are using. Let it run for a few seconds. Use Control C to stop the ping and issue:
arp -a
This should list all IP addresses and associated MAC addresses. If you keep a list of which client computer name is associated with which IP address and MAC address then you should have a clearer picture of your network topology. This is better achieved if the Server is also the DHCP Server.

  • I just took my I-Pod touch to a computer repair shop to replace cracked screen and now am told main part of I-Pod needs to be replaced.volume button no longer works, headphone and locking device also no longer working. Even though it all worked when given

I just took my I-Pod touch to a computer repair shop to replace a cracked screen. Told it need the main part to it. They said the volume button, headphone and locking part no longer worked. Told me to pick it up. When I gave it to them all components were working. Said because they weren't able to fix it there was no charge. Don't understand this.

Probably when you dropped, kicked, smashed, threw, or whatever you did to break your screen it also damaged the logic board and the connections to the volume button, headphone jack and sleep button. Happens all the time. Apparently the shop you selected to work on it is not very good so take them off your shopping list.
Then go buy a 5th Generation iPod Touch.

  • I have a Mac Pro using Lion, with a SSD for system.  Restored drive from backup.  Now logon password doesn't work.  Account password still works.  Changing password in user group preferences no longer works to change logon password.

I have a Mac Pro using Lion, with SSD for system drive.  Drive stopped booting, but otherwise appeared healthy.  Restored from system backup.  Now drive seems to work properly, BUT my logon password no longer works.  Password OK for account; can access system preferences, and change user password there BUT logon still refuses to accept password.  No luck changing password for that account after adding new administrator account and logging on from that account.  Suggestions?  Thanks.

If you redirect Accounts to another location (not on the Boot Drive) you need to direct them back there again after a restore.
    SystemPreferences > Accounts/User&Groups > ...
... Unlock the lock, then hold down Control as you click on an Account to get access to the Advanced Options pane.

  • Managed preferences: computer prefs work; user prefs don't work on Lion clients.

OK, so I'm running into a similar problem as before, but in reverse. On Snow Leopard clients, all of my MCX preferences work perfectly (computer and user). On Lion clients however, only computer/group preferences show up. User/group preferences are nowhere to be seen.
Server: OSX 10.6.8, OD (no AD)
    Snow Leopard and Lion clients.
    All clients bonded with server.
    Most other services work.
    Stuff I've tried:
Clearing/flushing MCX caches, unbonding/rebonding clients, restarting clients.
    Deleting/recreating users and groups.
    Restarting server.
Turning off all computer/group MCX preferences (so that only user preferences remained). No difference--accounts became unmanaged.
    Goals:
Set Group sharepoint to automount for all users.
Set a Yearbook sharebpoint to automount for members of Yearbook group.
Set various preferences to Always Managed for students.

    Lots of discoveries.
    The problem isn't MCX preferences.
It was a combination of two things.
The preferences hierarchy was cancelling out some of the things I wanted to do.
The Lion clients weren't reacting nicely to my custom Group folder. I was following Wazza's Server Notes on creating a universal Group folder to share between user groups. The Snow Leopard clients were fine with this; the Lions weren.
Solution: It's a little bit of a hack, but I added my Groups folder to the Login as a simple AFP URL instead of ticking the "Add Group Share Point" box, and I did it from the computer groups instead of the user groups.
Bonus: Other MCX user settings are working now, and I'm a happy camper.

  • ITunes - manually manage music no longer works

So I'm quite startled to find only a few topics about this without any resolution. Up until today after I upgraded to iTunes 11, I was always able to set my main itunes to manually manage music with my iphone and then go to ANY computer and add music to my iphone. NOW it wants to wipe my whole iphone library every time I try to apply the "manually manage music" option which would allow me to add music from any computer. I ask the community here - WHEN did this happen? Are we no longer allowed to do add music manually from any computer? WHATS the point of manually manage music (the whole point was that you didn't need to sync always with one comp)? I've tried wiping my iphone at two locations I often add music at with checking the manually manage music and everytime I wipe at one place then go to the other it wants to wipe again when I check the box to add music. I would really like to know if this is how it works now - meaning YOU NOW CAN ONLY ADD MUSIC TO YOUR IPHONE THROUGH ONE ITUNES LIBRARY. If so, I will be immediately uninstalling iTunes and finding alternatives. I appreciate any info or help. Thanks.

iPhone has traditionally only allowed manual management from a single library. Also once set up to sync, iDevices can only be switched to manual mode from the "home" library without iTunes wanting to erase the content. On any other library it will want to erase. Has your main library been rebuilt following a crash? This could lead to the symptoms you describe.
    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans with iTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
As long as your media is organised within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organised) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.
When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behaviour has been changed but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entires and import the local content you have on that box.
Perhaps the reason you were able to add music from more than one computer in the past is that you had done something similar by accident rather than design...

  • Apple Menu System Preferences no longer works

When I click on the System Preferenes item under the Apple Menu, nothing happens, but when I click on the System Preferences icon in the Dock, the System Preferences pane opens normally. How can I reactivate the System Preferences item in the Apple Menu?
    PowerMac 1.25DP MDD   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    George,
    Thanks for asking that question.
I offered this solution based upon similar successful advice which was given to another poster who solved this problem:Long story short I ended up reinstalling Mac OS X using Archive and Install. When I first used the computer following reinstalling Mac OS X, I was able to access the System Preferences by selecting them under the Apple in the menu bar. However, I have now updated my software using Software Update, and now I can't access System Preferences when I click on them under the Apple in the menu. The computer just acts like I never selected System Preferences.
Where have System Preferences gone??? provides another example of Previous Systems folder interfering with System Preferences.
Applications don't work after reinstalling Mac OS X explains a different problem with a Previous Systems folder: Example 1: You downgrade by performing an Archive and Install installation, but do not update to a later version of Mac OS X. The Previous Systems folder contains later versions of applications that may contribute to this issue. If you have proper backups, I recommend trashing the Previous Systems folder as soon as you can determine that the new system is functioning properly. The Previous Systems folders will either take up too much space or contribute to unexplained system problems.

  • Tiger 10.4.11 PPC - NetInfo Manager Machines No Longer Working??

In Tiger 10.4.11 (PPC) I'm trying to use NetInfo Manager to redirect a domain name to the local 127.0.0.1 IP.
I duplicate an existing entry and edit it to read:
    ip_address: 127.0.0.1
    name: TEST GOOGLE BLOCK
    serves: www.google.com
I save the new entry and restart the computer.
But I can still go to www.google.com.
If instead I edit the hosts file, the redirect to 127.0.0.1 works properly.
NetInfo Manager used to work for me in some older Tiger minor version on this same computer. I haven't done any major Darwin hacking or this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6640199
Not sure if that adds hosts support, or replaces NetInfo Manager with hosts BTW?
Anyone have a clue what's going on?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the suggestion, BDAqua.
I tried Safe Boot, I tried Repair Permissions, restarted and tried resetting the printing system.  Nothing worked.  One thing, though, is that before the printer setup automatically chose hp color laserjet 1.4, version 1.4.5 briefly flashed in the menu list.  I have no  idea where it found  that, but maybe the problem  is that 1.4 is not the correct driver.  There is no hp color laserjet 3550 in the list of drivers, and I have searched in vain for hp color laserjet 2.0. on both my Tiger system hd and  on  my Leopard system hd.  But 2.0 has got to  be on the Leopard hd because it works when I boot in Leopard.  This mystery is getting very frustrating. But there has to be a way to fix it because it used to work.

  • Internet managed preference no longer in Workgroup Manager?

I've recently upgraded my elementary school xserve to 10.5 and thus the Server Admin tools, including Workgroup Manager. I'm noticing that the managed pref for Internet is no longer an option. In 10.4, I would set a default homepage with this function as well. Has it been moved or incorporated into something else?
Also, how can I distribute a list of bookmarks and customized bookmark bar to 500 users? I use ARD but it seems to only send to machine, not user home folders. Perhaps I'm missing something? Thanks.

    Hi Mjmatul and forum folks.
I did have the same problem too when I wanted to setup up an internet preference file for another group of users... There was a "+" button, which allowed me to add another preference file. (You will get a Open-file type dialogue when you click the + button).
You need a "sample" file to which it bases the preferences on.
So, I searched my own workstation (and other workstations, and our home directory server) for a "com.apple.internet" file.
Once I located one, I used the "+" button to add it into Workgroup manager. I then removed all the other keys from within the Details area, other than the ones I wanted (e.g. default home page).
I changed the value for the default home page key, and applied the changes, and that was it.
Certainly a little messy (having to "find" your own preference file sample), but it did the trick for us.
    Hope that helps .
    Cheers,
    D.

  • Deleting Cookies... Security OPane on Preferences no longer working "properly"

My Preferences panel seems to have reset itself, with the Security pane no longer listing several options (Location services, Accept Cookies, Databases, Non-secure forms). As a result, I don't have an option to "show" and then "delete" cookies or database info.

  • "Create links from URLs" preference no longer working in sticky notes

I work with reading other people's sticky notes in Adobe Acrobat X Pro (now version 10.1.1). When they wrote URLs in the sticky notes it used to recognize them as links; now they're just plain text. My Preferences > General > "Create links from URLs" option is checked ON. I aso tried View > Tools > Document Processing > "create Links from URLs" and it added two links but only outside of the sticky notes. I am on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Thanks.

AFAIK, URLs inside annotations were never converted into actual links. I'm not even sure it's technically possible to do so.
It might have happened if the annotations were flattened and the text in them became a part of the static text of the PDF. Then the URLs in it could have been converted into "live" links, but not before.

  • Win 7 VPN Client 5.0.07 no longer works properly with Citrix DNE Update

Since Cisco Systems VPN Client does not work properly with mobile broadband on Windows 7, we've been successfully using Citrix's DNE Update to fix this for about 6 months. All of a sudden, machines with the DNE Update stopped working properly over VPN (whether using mobile broadband or not). The only fix is to unbind the DNE Lightweight driver from your network adapters, uninstall the DNE Update and reinstall the VPN Client. However, then you cannot use an aircard with VPN as the DNE Update was the fix.
Symptoms of the VPN issues with DNE Update:
    -web pages displaying garbled
-internal web pages not rendering at all
    -remote connectivity not working (VNC)
-RDP connects then crashes with data encryption errors
The only change that I can identify on our machines and in our environment would be Windows updates, but I've been unable to identify which one might have caused the problem.
Has anyone encountered this issue and found a fix? Does anyone know of another reliable fix for VPN Client to work with Windows 7 and aircards?
We're looking at moving to another VPN solution but that will take time and we need a more immediate solution.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Prapanch
No offence . . . .  but you need to read the complete thread before posting re:IP address & gateway
I'm not posting head end config because the config works with XP
There are no W7 specific parameters with ASA 8.3(2)
Multiple W7 machines have been used to test this.

  • Clients with managed preferences using parallels

If I use Mac OS X server to restrict which applications a user can access it causes a problem if they run parallels.
Because although they can launch parallels application, they get a warning for each application running inside the virtual machine "The application xxxx is not allowed" and although the message can be dismissed and you can continue to use the application it is very annoying for the user.
I am restricting allowed applications by folder in WGM and have tried adding /users/shared/parallels to the list of allowed folders but that didn't work.
Does any one know if its possible to get this to work or do i have to turn off application restrictions?

This isn't completely related to the issue, but has resolved it to some extent.
I ran FS Eventer whilst attempting to open an application in the VM, and found that the file /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/com.parallels.desktop.plist was being written to. After looking at this file, I noticed that this was where the settings for the VM were stored. For example, Isolating the VM from OSX.
I found that many values were duplicated 4-5 times, and had different values. Possibly causing some conflicts. So i manually changed these to all the same values to totally isolate the VM. After testing this did not seem to change the result.
I then proceeded to see if the Shared Application folder was still being used (even though it shouldn't be due to the isolation) after deleting it I re-ran the VM and found that it was recreated when I tried to open an application, but only the applications I had tried opening were contained there, instead of the full list.
I then proceeded to add access to this folder "~user/Applications/Windows 7 Applications" to the WGM allow list. Running the VM again after logging out and back in, I found that I could now use the Windows Apps fine. Although Internet Explorer still seemed to crash upon loading.
One side note about IE, if I was to launch it from the OSX folder mentioned above, it launched within the VM and ran fine, allowing me to use it.
This is really odd, as the setting to isolate the VM from the Host, should in theory, stop this applications folder from A) appearing, and B) running the contained apps connected to the VM.
I have logged a bug report with Parallels to see if a resolution can be found to get this functionality working correctly. As I have used versions 4&5 without any issues, with identical VM setups (not including the Isolation as its not required)
I would be interested to see if Kevin is able to try the above steps to see if he can get the same results. If you do, it may be worth filing a report with Parallels also, to bring this bug to their attention some more to get it fixed.
    Cheers, Chris

I just converted to Mavericks. Now the rules for mail messages don't work. I've clicked them off and on again but no change. What else to I need to do to make the rules work?

Duplicate your copy of iTunes 10.x before upgrading to iTunes 11 (or restore it from a backup) and use iTunes 10.x to listen to (and in particular access the links in) podcasts. Further, file a bug with Apple that these links don't work when the album art is displayed in the album art mini-player.

  • Group calendars on 10.6.4 client machines no longer work with iCal Server

After updating 2 client machines to 10.6.4 I realized my group calendars no longer work in iCal.
I get "Server Responded With an Error" on all my group calendars, on both machines.
Preferences>Accounts>Server Path reveles the server path has reverted back to a GUID "/principals/_uids_/GUID string/" .
I change it back to "/principals/_uids_/wiki-GroupName/" and get it working again, but if I quit iCal and restart it again reverts back to the GUID.
I've trashed all calendars in ~/Library/Calendars, and the Prefs. I also tried "/principals/wikis/GroupName/", but again it reverts.
I booted to my 10.6.3 clone and have no problems with the group calendars there.
    (I'm running 10.6.4 Server)
Is anyone else having this issue?
    Any ideas?

Are you asking for an example of how to use calendarservermanageprincipals? While the tool is designed to help you configure privileges on resources and locations, it works fine for users. So I created a new user in Workgroup Manager to represent my Marketing department's calendars. I named this user "sharedmarketing".
Then, I wanted to give staff read-only access to the calendar and give Marketing write access, so I executed these two commands:
    sudo calendarservermanageprincipals --add-write-proxy groups:marketing users:sharedmarketing
    sudo calendarservermanageprincipals --add-read-proxy groups:staff users:sharedmarketing
I then imported the content from the Marketing Wiki calendar into this calendar and that was it!
If I logged in directly to the sharedmarketing account (not necessary), and looked how the account was set to be delegated, it properly showed group names:
There is no way to configure it like this using the iCal GUI, and this was I always felt that the management of privileges was the biggest obstacle in setting up iCal Server in this proper, supported fashion.
Then, from the client, I can naturally access those group calendars:
This is SO much easier to setup and maintain as each user only needs to have their ONE iCal account configured and they can just add the necessary groups, which is WAY easier than supplying users with crazy wiki-calendar URLs.
