Managed preferences: computer prefs work; user prefs don't work on Lion clients.

OK, so I'm running into a similar problem as before, but in reverse. On Snow Leopard clients, all of my MCX preferences work perfectly (computer and user). On Lion clients however, only computer/group preferences show up. User/group preferences are nowhere to be seen.
Server: OSX 10.6.8, OD (no AD)
Snow Leopard and Lion clients.
All clients bonded with server.
Most other services work.
Stuff I've tried:
Clearing/flushing MCX caches, unbonding/rebonding clients, restarting clients.
Deleting/recreating users and groups.
Restarting server.
Turning off all computer/group MCX preferences (so that only user preferences remained). No difference--accounts became unmanaged.
Goals:
Set Group sharepoint to automount for all users.
Set a Yearbook sharebpoint to automount for members of Yearbook group.
Set various preferences to Always Managed for students.

Lots of discoveries.
The problem isn't MCX preferences.
It was a combination of two things.
The preferences hierarchy was cancelling out some of the things I wanted to do.
The Lion clients weren't reacting nicely to my custom Group folder. I was following Wazza's Server Notes on creating a universal Group folder to share between user groups. The Snow Leopard clients were fine with this; the Lions weren.
Solution: It's a little bit of a hack, but I added my Groups folder to the Login as a simple AFP URL instead of ticking the "Add Group Share Point" box, and I did it from the computer groups instead of the user groups.
Bonus: Other MCX user settings are working now, and I'm a happy camper.

  • Client Replaced - Managed Preferences no longer working

An iMac on my network came down with a hardware problem, so I replaced it with a different unit. I removed the computer from Workgroup Manager, gave the second one the same name and re-bound it to OD. Workgroup Manager can see the system in the Computer List, and I can add it to the Computer Groups I need, but the managed preferences of the group don't push out to the new system. I've since tried renaming it, but the problem remains.
The groups are working with all the other Macs that belong to them and the new unit is bound in the exact same way - is there some residual of the old machine that OSX server isn't liking? I've been pulling my hair out over this one.

    Hi
If you've had the logic board replaced the new board will have a different MAC address - obviously. Managing hardware using Computer Lists is actually done using the MAC addressess (ethernet hardware address). Its not enough to name it the same. You have to remove it completely from the Computer List and browse for it again. Better still make a note of the new MAC address and manually add it.
You can find the MAC addresses (as well as the IP addresses) of any networked mac/pc/printer etc by issuing:
    ping 192.168.x.255
Or whatever IP address range you are using. Let it run for a few seconds. Use Control C to stop the ping and issue:
    arp -a
This should list all IP addresses and associated MAC addresses. If you keep a list of which client computer name is associated with which IP address and MAC address then you should have a clearer picture of your network topology. This is better achieved if the Server is also the DHCP Server.

  • Firefox saves user preferences to prefs.js when exit it, is this redundant?

I have a question regarding to why Firefox saves user preferences to prefs.js when exit it.
My observation is that Firefox saves changes immediately to prefs.js when users modify preferences either through Option (Windows)/Preferences (Mac, Linux) menu or directly through about:config page. Therefore, the prefs.js file should always in sync with the browser.
However, I notice that Firefox saves preferences to prefs.js in the end when I exit the browser. I am wondering if this feature is redundant since all preferences are in sync between prefs.js and browser? Or maybe some preferences are not saved immediately? If that is the case, how to identify those preferences that are not saved immediately?
    Thanks in advance!

It is possible that there are situations where there are some prefs that need to be changed and where the two files differ.<br />
This can happen if you use Clear Recent History and Firefox wasn't able to complete that task.<br />
Another possibility is to restart Firefox to complete the installation of add-ons and there are probably more cases.

  • Managed Preferences (Allowed Apps) Are Not working?

I am having a problem with a Computer List managed preferences not working..I am selecting Always manage, allow only these apps and the clients do not read all the permissions properly. IE: Allow Firefox and log in and it will not allow Firefox. It's hit or miss. Safari works when told to allow, other apps also work. It just seems that some apps do not listen to the management. If I go back to WGM, Turn off Always, log back in on the client, and Firefox and everything else works. Server 10.5.4, Client 10.5.4
BTW, Where is the Managed Clients sub catagory in the Leopard Server Discussions?
    Thanks for the help!

We are using Computer Groups as we have found it to be far easier to manage machines instead of users. As far as apps go, we don't use the "Applications pane" we use the "Folders" pane and approve them that way. The documentation states that this is designed for both an application bundle or Application folders. It works in that if there is any Daemons withing the bundle or folder, it also approves these all in one shot.

It should be in the Users/ Shared folder.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Note the option to check and repair Library Permissions

I've just purchased a new 2014 15" MacBookPro to replace my much missed 17" MBP. I got the works: OS 10.9.4, 2.8GHz Intel i7, 16GB memory and a 1 TB SSD, but despite the expense, I still don't have a computer that works...
The problem is that every time I try to open any program from Office 2011, I immediately get the following window, for example for Word: "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." This happens each and every time I try to open Word or other Office 2011 component.
Thinking it might be a licensing issue, I purchased and downloaded a new copy of Office 2011 from Amazon and installed it on my new MBP. Same issue once again.
I tried to remove all copies of Office 2011 from the MBP, but the instructions provided by Microsoft required about three page and seventeen steps and the page was somehow corrupted and would not print in its entirety, nor would it e-mail as anything other than a link to the corrupted page. Not trusting my memory, I decided not to try this without adult supervision.
I used Disk Utility to repair Disk Permissions, as described on an existing thread regarding the same problem, but to no avail.
I removed and later replaced the "Microsoft User Data" folder from the Documents folder, but that was no help.
I have copied the short version of the "Microsoft Error Reporting log version: 2.0," below, for those of you with a deeper knowledge of the internal workings, or non-workings of things Mac when crossed with things MS.

Surely others have encountered and solved this same problem, and I'm hoping they can help me do the same. I don't know if this is a known issue or simply a matter of my having bumbled naively through a process far more complex than I was led to believe.

  • Why does Firefox remember the pages I've visited, even though I am using different computers? I've never used the sync function. I don't want my computer at work to be synched with my personal computer at home

My computer at work remembers the pages I've visited even though I visited the pages while I was using my computer at my home. I don't know how or why this is happening, and I don't like that it is in sync with my computer at home - I have never used that function.
For example - When I type in "the methodist hospital" into the search bar using the computer at home, all the search results come up from Google, so I click on the links and take a look around on the websites/pages. The next day, I walk into work, and I type in "the methodist hospital" again in the search bar, and when the results come up - it indicates in gray lettering that "[I] visited this page [yesterday's date]."
Please explain why this is happening and what I must do in order for it to stop. It is scary knowing that my browsing history is remembered using 2 completely different computers. Needless to say, I don't want my boss thinking I'm just surfing the web all day at work.
    Thanks in advance!

if i have to read any comment by matt n again i will throw up...in my mouth. i have gone all over google trying to figure out what the f ff did to me without my permission, i have updates turned off so there should be no prompting to restart, there should be a polite offer not a forced update. i am angry and so are a ton of people.
everytime i go to a new complaint, another angry fellow ff user there is matt n with his infuriating smiling little picture...telling me about the awesome safety and security of the new ff...ignoring that a supposed safe but ugly and unusable browser is worse than a customized, beautiful, well functioning browser...with supposed safety issues. i am so angry i cannot express how this has wasted my time. i have been online for 2 hours now figuring out how to fix, apparently i cannot. my old theme is not compatible now...so i am screwed.
good bye. if i wanted chrome i would have had chrome. but i have no choice now.

  • Log in option using Work Group Manager to see all network users

I am getting different login options with my network of 20 iMacs, yet they are all set-up the same way using WorkGroup Manager. I would like the option of having all of the user names displayed on the login screen. I work at a small high school, and this just saves me time and pain. All of these iMacs are a member of the same group, and they all have the same login settings. Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Workgroup Manager or more precisely MCX manged preferences are not really supported for Mavericks running Macs but are for Mountain Lion and earlier.
Looking at your example screen captures it looks like the working one is Lion or Mountain Lion, and the non-working one is Mavericks which would be consistent with the above explanation.
The recommended way of pushing settings like this now is to use Profile Manager which supports Mavericks and Lion/Mountain Lion clients.

  • Computer preferences will not work

I have a lab of iMac G5s runnninng 10.4.10 that have managed computer preferences. This was working fine, and still is on all but two, until I had the logic boards replaced in two of the compters. These two will not get the managed preferences at all. I verifed that the MAC address in Workgroup Manager was the same as the computers, I even removed the computers from the list and readded them, even used different names. I wiped the hard drives on the computers and reloaded the OS. No matter what I try they will not take the managed preferences. Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Hi
Obviously changing logic boards would mean different hardware addresses. What you could do is manually adding the new MAC addresses in the computer list rather than discovering them. This is the better method. You could also create another computer list for just those two macs and configure the usual way.

You will need an external drive that is formatted as MAC OS EXTENDED (journaled).
Move the Project, Events, and any photos and music to the external drive by following the instructions in this post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4141
Be sure to use CONSOLIDATE MEDIA to get the photos and music. Then plug this drive into your computer and you will be able to edit.

    Howdy carpetjim,
When you change the folder location like that, it changes where new songs and media are stored. To actually load the library you need to do this:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
If you are using the Mac, open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option key.
You should see one of the following screens:
    Additional information
If you do not see one of the screens above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.
