Hi im just still a beginner with java and ive a project that requires me to set up a client and server and store location information over gprs to a database. all the talk of drivers and sdks etc is very confusing trying toread through it. I've the java sdk 1.4.2-06 downloaded and as far as i can determine this contains the jdbc api. not sure which one though. whats the next step? download a driver, i dont know which one, can anyone help???? please

Yes, J2SE does contain JDBC. It does have one driver, the JDBC-ODBC bridge, which requires that you have ODBC installed on the client machine.
But you'll probably want an all-Java JDBC driver that's written for your database. Every database vendor has one, usually free for the download. It'll come in the form of a Java JAR file, which you'll have to put in the CLASSPATH of your client when you run it.

Interface: it is a program that performs communication with External system from SAP.
There are two types of interfaces:
1. Inbound Interface: External system sends the data to SAP
2. Outbound Interface: SAP sends the data to External system.
Let's take a scenario:
There are two Systems SAP ERP and Seibel CRM
Scenario1: Whenever an Order is created in Seibel CRM system it has to be transferred to SAP where the Order confirmation, Delivery and Billing will be performed. This can be enabled by using IDOC as inbound interface.
Scenario2: Whenever a New customer is Created in SAP ERP this customer data has to be transferred to Seibel CRM using Outbound IDOC / RFC.
Basically interfaces are implemented using RFC, BAPI, ALE/IDOC.

Presentation Server
It is actually a program named sapgui.exe.
It usually installed in users workstation.
The interface accepts the input from the user in the form of keystrokes, mouse-clicks, and function keys, and sends these requests to the application server.
It receives and displays the result from the application server.
Application Server
An application server is a set of executables that collectively interpret the the ABAP/4 programs.
Each application server has a profile called application server profile, that specifies its characteristics when it starts up and while it is running. It specifies:
1. Number of processes and its types.
2.Amount of memory each process may use.
3. Length of time a user is inactive before being automatically logged off.
If your ABAP/4 program requests information from the database, the application server will format the request and send it to the database server
Database Server
The database server is a set of executables that accepts database requests from the application server.
These requests are passed on to the RDBMS (Relation Database Management System).
The RDBMS sends the data back to the application server.
The RDBMS may run on database servers computer or may be installed on its own computer.
The components of application server are dispatcher, dispatcher queue, work process.
All requests that come in from presentation servers are directed first to the dispatcher.
The dispatcher writes them to the dispatcher queue.
The dispatcher pulls the requests from the queue on a first-in, first-out basis.
Each request is then allocated to the first available work process.
A work process handles one request at a time.
The work process needs two memory areas, the user context and the roll area.
The user context is a memory area that contains the information about the user.
The roll area is a memory area that contains about the program execution.
User Context
User context is a memory area that contains the characteristics of a user that is logged on the R/3 system.
1)It holds, users current settings.
2. The users authorizations.
3. The names of the programs the user is currently running.
When a user logs on, the user context is allocated for that logon. When logs off, it is freed.
Roll Area 
A roll area is a memory that is allocated by a work process for an instance of a program.
It holds the information needed by R/3 about the program execution, such as: 1. The values of the variables
2. The dynamic memory allocations
3. The current program pointer.
Each time a user starts a program, a roll area is created for that instance of the program.
If two users are using the same program at the same time, two roll areas will exist-one for each user.
The roll area is freed when the program ends.
Both roll area and the user context play an important roll in dialog processing

Interesting difference in Menus between 6i (client-server) and 10g (web)

I just noticed an interesting difference between Forms 6i (client-server) and 10g (web forms). Perhaps you know a work around.
We have an oracle form with a customized menu attached. The main body of the application displays nothing so we shrunk the application window down to the tiny window possible just leaving the 3 or 4 drop down menu visible. So it was basically this little floating toolbar where users could pull down a menu and select an oracle form to open.
The difference is that in 10g Web Forms when the pull down menu is accessed, the list of selectable items is contained within the FORMS_MDI_WINDOW (or the IE window). So if the list is long then the drop down list shows a small arrow at the top and bottom that forces you to scroll thru the remaining items in the menu.
Whereas in 6i, when the menu was access the contents of the menu would show in full. Even if it meant expanding the menu beyond the FORMS_MDI_WINDOW.
Does anyone know if I'm stuck with this functionality? If I'm stuck it will mean I need to make my little menu application full screen so that users can see all the items in a menu without having to scroll thru choices using these little arrows.
Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated!

This is a consequence of the client being Java. When you run a Java application in a browser it cannot draw outside the browser window area. It's fully contained within the browser in every sense. That is by design.
There is no way to get around this that I know of.

Taken backup form production environment through TSM backup utility and restore same db on UAT environment by TSM Utility, after restore got below issue, past i had done many time but working fine this time
it’s not working. Production environment have SP2010 and sql server 2008 ,UAT have same thing also.

Load balancing between application server and database

Hi,
is there any load balancing between the application server and the database? Consider we have a single instance of an application server that sends database queries from different clients to the database. Are the requests queued in some way at the application server, allowing to control the flow of the queries (e.g. queries from "more important" clients might be sent with a higher priority)?

Thanks a lot for all the responses..
Just wanted to let you guys know that my installation finished successfully.
The thing which confused me was that my Qtime, Qdate and everything else was showing correct values..
Well, my problem I set the environmental variable PASE_TZ to the EST time zone on a SYS level using WRKENVVAR>F4>SYS and added the variable. I logged off and the sidofr logged off, but one user which should have logged off and didn't was the "SAPINST"(my installation user) which was logged in the subsystem TMKSVR00.
Even when I had closed the SAPINST installlation program, the user doesn't log off...it just sits there until and unless u shut him out of the system using the option 4 on wrkactjob for ending the JOB(SAPINST logged in the system below the TMKSVR00 subsystem)
So since the SAPISNT user never logged of, his environmental variables were not initilized properly, even after the changes...
This thought came to me almost after a 6 hours of wasting my time searching for notes here and there...
I think when u end/stop the install in SAPINST, the SAPINST user should log off the AS400 system, but I have noticed, it never does...although when u restart the installation, if u have noticed it shows you the log on for the SAPINST user in the TMKSVR screen...
Its kind of buggy, I would say...
I have noticed, that even when I log on to AS400 from home or from a remote PC using Emulator, it shows me logged in the subsystem and even after i have logged of, it still shows me there...
Anyway, thanks a lot guys...for all your responses..

We need to migrate Our current 1 clustered SQL Server, Many Configurations DataBases and Many Content DataBases to a brand new clustered SQL server and brand new databases in it.
How can I do this?

I had a question about orcale db server. Now, as I understand it in a cluster there is one database SERVER and each machine in the cluster has access to the shared database server.
The entire cluster presents a unified view of the database server. To the developer it appears as though there is only one database server.
Is it possible to have several such clusters and run a query across these clusters in a transparent manner? Say I have Table 1 on database SERVER 1 and table 2 on database SERVER 2. Given the current architecture SERVER 1 is on CLUSTER 1 and SERVER 2 is on CLUSTER 2. Can I run a query joining Table 1 and Table 2 such that I do not have to worry about where CLUSTER 1 is and where CLUSTER 2 is? I am nit talking about partiitioning where one table is spread across nodes in a CLUSTER but is still within the same database server.

Pro*C using client server and the sqlca - any takers

Hi all
This is my 1st post and it's about Pro*C.
At work, we are porting our Pro*C apps from VMS to XP/NT. Has anyone done this before, anything to be aware of?
Also am planning a client/server architechture for my next project, but with Pro*c, and am concerned about the conficts of using the sqlca between child processes...any ideas/suggetions?

IR web client server(0):Database connection information not accessible.

We upgraded our system from Hyperion 9.3 to EPM 11.1.2.2. We mainly use the reporting tools SQR production and Interactive reporting.
Using workspace as an admin if I run a BQY everything works fine but when I try to do the same as other users I get the error "server(0):Database connection information not accessible. Processing is disabled" from the
I have migrated everything form the old version and haven't changes anything since. It looks like a provisioning issue and I tried looking and comparing everything from the present production(old 9.3 system).
Did anyone else face the same issue before? Any suggestions on where to look into.

login with your oracle ID and password you have for your company and search for the document number in the "search knowledge base" which will show up on the top right corner of the page.
The search will show you the document and you can access it.

Hi John!
If you have a network connection between the reader and the database than it does not matter if they are in the same room or in different countries.
Using a VPN does imply that your network is set up in a way that the network traffic from the reader to the database has to pass through the VPN tunnel. On the database server you will have access to the database listener.
I haven't yet worked with the Streams Dispatcher but I worked with the HTTP dispatcher. I send the packets to a JSP application running on the application server and this wrote the content into the database.

Client\server and objects

I have client/server programe and two kinds of objects and I want to send multiple requests from client side containing both of objects depending on my condition in client side and I have to calculate the response time for every request , in server side I define two type of buffers to accept both objects and start to process them and send the response to the client?*
My problem I get error (java.io.StreamCorruptedException and java.lang.NullPointerException) when it switch from one type of object to another?

In a SQL*Plus session, [connect string] is generally a TNS alias (i.e. in the command "connect scott/tiger@orcl", orcl is a TNS alias). I don't know if it is possible in some release to have a fully qualifies TNS entry (i.e. connect scott/tiger@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(...)) ), but it is certainly uncommon. Depending on the version of Oracle, there are various ways to configure a client to resolve a TNS alias, but local naming is the most common, so I'll assume that is what you're using...
If you are trying to query a remote database, you would either have to
- Create a database link (i.e. CREATE DATABASE LINK db_link_name ...) and refer to the database link name in your SQL statement
- Embed the full TNS entry in your query (i.e. SELECT * FROM emp@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=( .. .)) )
If you choose to create the database link, one of the things you have to specify is the TNS alias (or the fully qualified TNS entry). If you specify a TNS alias there, you would generally have to ensure that the TNS alias existed in the tnsnames.ora file on the database server where the database link is created.

Performance problems, do we need to upgrade. Server and Database level

Problem:
I'm a Java programmer and a Transact SQL DBA. So i have knowledge about databases. Nowwe have a database who performs very bad and got much deadlock problems and so on. It's an Oracle Database.
We have Oracle version 9 and an application in Delphi. The bad performance is only since a while. We have cleaned the archive.
My suggestion is why not migrate to a newer version of Oracle. Change some hardware specs get up to date.Then i think we will have less problems.
But ofcourse this is more trail on error. That why i hope there is an Oracle specialist here who can help me with a few questions.
Users and Specs
I got 150 till 180 users
i got a server with 1 processor XEON 233 GHZ
4 gig memory, constant use 1,5 gig
Questions
1. Is it a good idea to upgrade? Maybe not to solve al the problems, but version 9 is old, there is version 10 or 11.
2. Which version we should use 10 or 11? 11 is in use for a while so this sounds like a good idea.
3. Are the specs OK or must i do something about the server to?
Maybe dual core, or Enterprise (64 bit). Memory upgrade?
4. Maybe for 64 bit i need Oracle version 11 to have good support on it?
I hope somebody can help me a bit.

But do complete testing your upgraded database before you move to PRODUCTION.
