Clipping dilemma

I've tried to make sure my individual track levels are not clipping, but many of them are maxed out (just dipping into the orange/red area). My overall Master Level is clipping in spots however, especially as the song intensifies. If I lower the individual track levels I lose some of the punch I'm trying to get out of the sound. If I lower the Master Level I can't raise the already maxed out track levels without having them clip. This is a dilemma. Is the solution to lower ALL track levels incrementally and in the right proportion to each other, then RAISE the Master Level? Or did I go wrong in the actual recording? I thought you were supposed to record with the levels set where you want them as long as they don't clip.
Also... is clipping okay if you want to get more crunch out of hip-hop style drums? I notice that,
playing them from inside the loops library drums sound crunchy, but the Master Levels don't clip.

It sounds like you are using up all of your headroom. On my songs, the tracks seldom get into the orange individually. I usually leave the master level at unity (zero Db) and never move it, then I mix the tracks by ear, and keeping an eye on that master level meter. If I get a bit of over there, I'll try to find what is doing it, and apply limiting to that track that is the probable culprit. When I am all done with the song, I use the C3 multi compressor on the master track to get the most overall loudness from the song without clipping. It is not part of GB, but it is free and you can find it here http://www.apulsoft.ch/
Another thing, you said "...record with the levels set where you want them". Well, the level slider on the track in GB has nothing to do with the input level. It controls playback level. My first take, I usually leave it at unity, then the first playback, it is almost always too loud for the mix, so I then balance it better to hear my part with the song. If I do a second take, I leave it there, and the recording level doesn't change at all, only the playback level.
There is a volume slider for auditioning the loops in the browser, and so they will often play at a different level than they do in your track when you drag them there. I usually back that slider off so they aren't so loud when I audition them. Also, be aware that if you start with a software loop, that first loop sets the track's instrument setting, and any other SI loops you drag to that track will play using THOSE settings and not necessarily sound like they did in the browser. For instance, if you choose a SI drum loop that is a rock kit loop, and then you drag a SI hip hop kit loop into the same track, the hip hop loop will play using the rock kit. The same with all other SI loops. You can take an organ loop and make a track with it, then any SI loop you drag into that track will play on organ, even if it is a piano loop, or even a drum loop. This only works on the SI loops, though, not the blue Real Instrument loops.

  • Importing video clips in AVCHD (Lite) into Aperture vs iMovie

I'm trying to figure out which application I should use for importing and storing video clips shot on my Panasonic DMC-ZS7 camera. This camera can shoot in AVCHD (Lite) or in Motion JPEG. I use the AVCHD (Lite) format to shoot the videos with this camera.
The two application options I currently have for importing video clips from this camera are:
    a. Aperture 3.5.1 (I'm not using iPhoto since I have Aperture).
    b. iMovie 10.0.1 (I'm not using Final Cut Pro)
When I first got this camera, Aperture 3 did not support the AVCHD Lite codec. Back then, iMovie could import video clips shot in AVCHD Lite, but it had to transcode the AVCHD video clips into AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec). Some time later, one of the Aperture 3 updates made it possible to import AVCHD Lite into Aperture (without having to transode into an intermediate codec), so we started importing our video clips shot in AVCHD Lite (together with our photos shot by the same camera) directly into Aperture.
iMovie 10 released in 2013 supports importing video clips shot in AVCHD Lite without having to transode them to AIC for storing these video clips in iMovie. So, now we have a dilemma that we need help with. Which application should we use going forward for importing video clips from this camera?
When I look at the metadata for the imported videos in Aperture, I see that the format of the imported video clips is listed as H.264. However, I can't seem to be able to find any information about the format in which iMovie stores imported videos. I can "Reveal in Finder" a video that I import into iMovie, and I see the size of the file and the .mov extension assigned to the file. With video files, the extension does not always determine the codec of the file, but in my non-expert opinion, the .mov extension is not H.264; I may be totally wrong here, though. What I have noticed, though, is that a video clip imported into iMovie has the file size that is about 10% larger than the same video clip imported into Aperture.
    Therefore, I have three questions:
    1. What format is a video clip (shot in AVCHD Lite) stored in Aperture 3.5.1 and in iMovie 10.0.1
    2. Which format (the one used by Aperture or the one used in iMovie) is better suited for transoding AVCHD videos into? The balance of the quality and file size is the main consideration for us.
    3. Which applications would you personally prefer using for importing video clips to and why?
I do want to use some of these video clips to make home videos in the future, utillizing iMovie. However, it seems I can still store the raw footage in Aperture and access this raw footage from iMovie to be able to create an iMovie project and a final home video. One of the concerns is that if we keep importing our video clips into Aperture, the Aperture library could grow beyond the size that Aperture can support and we may end up losing our photos due to the database corruption. Is this a real risk?
    Thank you!

I had the same question recently. Go to the right of this box and a little above, into the Search Discussions window. Type in this: Is MPEG2 the answer
You will find my question, and the great answers I got. Follow those directions and you will be all set!

  • How can I tell if an audio clip is .m4a or .aiff?

I have some audio clips in a song that I dragged/dropped a few weeks ago and I cannot remember if they were rendered as m4a or aiff. I tried clicking on the clip itself but I see no option for "get info" or anything like that. I also tried using the finder which does tell you, but unfortunately I used the same title about ten other times so that won't work in this case.

    Did you try my suggestion?
    WH
Yes, and it presents the same dilemma as the finder option since I have multiple files with the exact same title. Example: My song has an audio clip titled "Leah" because that is the name of the girl I recorded on that track. Unfortunately I used that title six different times. So if I use Finder or your suggestion, I type in "Leah", and it gives me all 5 files, all the exact same music and duration and I have no idea which one is the one being used in my song. The only way to know for sure is to do this from within GB, and I cannot believe there isn't an option for this. Thanks for offering to help though.

  • Urgent Need of Help Playing Movie Clips

I'm a complete noob when it comes to AS. I know basic things like stop(); and gotoAndPlay.
    Here's my dilemma.
Dearest Professor has given us a task of creating a website in Flash. You need to have 15 links, or 15 pages. He states that you can only go frame by frame on the main timeline with no tweening spaces in between. So I'm virtually creating all of my animations in symbols.
This isnt such a problem... I created a short introduction title video in Flash using a Movie Clip Symbol... placed it on the main timeline on the first page, and then called ActionScript to play the video.
Here's the problem... So.... the movie will play, but it will continuously loop... I've tried putting stop(); on the home page, under the AS... I'm just completely lost on how to get this to play the short clip and go straight to the home page... Could someone PLEASE, direct me on how to do this and give me an explanation as to why this way is the way it is... I would very much like to understand how it works.
    Thanks
    The Flash Noob

    Thanks Rob!
I did what you suggested but I think I may have messed it up...
Here's the output error I have going on right now.
TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert flash_website_template2_fla::MainTimeline@7fff0d7aea1 to openingtodogwood.
      at openingtodogwood/frame9()[openingtodogwood::frame9:3]
In the end of the timeline of the movie clip I put this:
    stop();
    openingtodogwood(parent).play();
I think that might be wrong but I'm unsure on what I should have really put. I was also reading that having the name of the movie clip the same as the class in the properties panels is not a good idea?
Thank you so much for your help!

  • Can't adjust clip duration of still photos in iMovie '11

Anyone having the same problem? I inserted a still photo in one of my projects in iMovie which has a a clip duration of 5s when added. I clicked the cogwheel icon then chose the inspector to adjust the duration. I've managed to changed it to 3s but after I clicked "Done", the clip duration is still under 5s.
I didn't encountered this problem before in iMovie '10 and I've searched over at Google and found out that many iMovie '11 users have the same dilemma.
Any workaround you can suggest? Thanks!

"problems setting duration for still photos and transitions in iMovie '11"
A number of people have experienced the same problem and written about it on discussions. Lots of difference solutions as well. If you search using the title quoted above, you can read the solution I found. It's more complicated than it should be. I've never had to fiddle as much with duration times for transitions and still photos. Nevertheless, the steps I have described work for me. You will also find the steps another reader offered that may work for you if all of your transitions are set for the same durations and all of the still photos are as well.

  • Export Dilemma, please help

I have a dilemma. I use iMovie 08 to import my ACHD. I then edit in iMovie 08 and most often iMovie HD.
My source is 1080/60i. I import at Full.
My output is in DVD. I want to make a sd dvd and also have a Quicktime File for burning Blu-ray later. Either through Toast on a regular DVD or a Blu-ray burner, once I get the software and or burner.
My work flow involves editing and then sharing to Quick Time for the Blu-ray movie. For the regular DVD I would like to share to Quick Time.
I would use AIC and current fps and for the compressor the other box checked and the interlaced box unchecked ???
    Have blur set to 2.
For size would I set to ??? In 08 I understand 1280x720 HD is the best quality, but what happens in iDVD to it? And what about form iMovie HD, any difference?
For the Blu-ray version I would use the settings above but for the size I would use HD 1920X1080 16:9
I have sent projects straight to iDVD (from iMovie HD) and I end up with a 720x404 movie. The quality seemed OK for SD DVD on a smaller HDTV.
I could use some help form someone who is experienced in this type of work flow. I have tried many experiments and not hit on a great quality DVD. My next imports I am planning on converting before importing, not sure to what. Does iMovie HD and 08 handle the clips the same (in terms of de-interlacing)?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I think I might be asking too many questions in one post. Let me try a different approach.
1)When I do a Full import of 1080/60i AVCHD into iMovie08 do I now have 1080i/30 AIC clips or are they progressive?
2)If I then import these clips into iMovie HD 06 do they get converted at all if the project is set for HD 1080i 30 ?
3)Would there be any benefit to exporting to QT expert settings vs just importing to iDVD form either HD 06 or 08?
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Clip masked image moves after save- little help please?

Hi, All. I've been working at a printing company for the last 3 years and have seen the issue I'm about to describe only a handful of times. I'd like to understand it more and know if there is a fix that can be utilized before saving the file for production.
So, here's my dilemma.... I've saved Illustrator EPS files that have multiple images that are placed and embedded into the document. All of the images are "cropped" using clipping masks. They have been every common type of image extension (jpg, tif, eps). The issue that I'm seeing is that one or two of the images "jump" from their original placement but we've only caught it during the rip or even after it has been printed (which makes for wasted material). The jump isn't by centimeters either. They always end up off the artboard entirely so the clipping mask shape is the only thing left in place.
So, what's the deal? I've seen this happen in CS3 and CS4. Does anyone have a solution or an inkling of any possible reasoning behind this? I'd appreciate any and all feedback!
    Thanks!

The majority of the files we receive are from outside sources. We have in-house preflighting as a courtesy to our clients before we print since our displays range from the very small to the very large. I haven't seen it happen with PSD files but we're too big to convert all the images we receive to PSD files. Who knows if that would even be a fix.
I'm re-enacting the issue for you so you have a visual.
This image is during preflight/before the file has been saved:
This is where the image ends up after saving, closing and reopening:

  • Final Output DILEMMAS!!!!

    Hi everyone!
I'm about to finish a rough cut of about 90minutes video and I have a couple of DILEMMAS!!! Please HELP.
original footage was shot HDV 16:9 NTSC (with a Sony HDR FX1), then imported in SD for sake of space and render time.
Timeline settings: DV-NTSC (capture DV NTSC 48KHZ, Playback output to Video Firewire NTSC 720-480, PTV output Video same as playback) and the timeline was set to anamorphic.
Dilemma N°1: if my timeline is 720-480 and so is the imported footage, why is the image in the canvas not only letterboxed but totally surrounded by black frame? It's like having two rectangulars one in the other but proportional.Isn't my image supposed to fill the entire screen? How can I fix this at finisehd editing?
Dilemma N°2: this rough footage is supposed to be shown to a TV editor... what type of Quicktime conversion should I use to put it at a good quality on a DVD? (H.264, DVC Pro, cinepak...?????)
i tried to read about this without bothering any of you but got to no solution.
    THANK YOU in advance.
    DUZ from Italy
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

"ok, the material was imported DVC Pro NTSC 720x480, and so is the sequence."
Those are not the correct settings. Most HDV cameras when they downconvert do so to DV anamorphic. You're material should be anamorphic, should have the anamorphic flag set, should have used that setting for capture and for the sequence. If that was not set correctly then everything downstream of that will be hosed.
if the background is bigger than the clip it sounds as if you had an HDV sequence created and edited into that. If when you first launch the application you set it to HDV, the the initial sequence will be in HDV. Changing the settings after that will not change the settings of the existing sequence. If you edit your material into that, you've edited material captured with the wrong settings into a sequence with the wrong settings.

  • Safari Web clip functionality

Is there a way to make an RSS feed with a web clip that is put into dashboard? I don't see an obvious way but this would be great if possible. The other question is if there is an open API for my own widget or APP to pull the webclip information.

    Interesting dilemma.
    One thing to try:
In the dashboard, click on the little plus sign so you get access to the "manage widgets" button.
There you can disable the "web clip". Maybe that will make the errant clip go away. I think if you
subsequently re-enable "web clip" you will get that functionality back but without that messed up clip.

  • WMV Clips wont open browser

They use to work fine until i installed flip4mac as i recommended this but as it did not do what i wanted i unintalled it and then the clips stopped working so i reinstalled Windows Media Player and now when i go to play a wmv clip in the browser it looks af it its goons start downloading the file in the status bar but then just hangs the machine.
    Any one any ideas?
    thanks

The instructions are an issue. One the dilemmas with something like Flip4Mac is that it's not a stand alone product. The player is dependent on Quicktime, the web plugin uses Safari, the encoder/exporter a variety of apps.
If you've ever used Flip4Mac encoder in Squeeze you'll get an entirely different interface than using it in Compressor or QuicktimePro.
You can join WMV files in Quicktime Pro just as you can join mov files. It's a bit of a pain and I don't think too many folks know how to do it with mov files either.
It's easier in FCP but that's expensive way to go if you don't have FCP.
You can do it in iMovie. That should be an easy and familiar interface and it's free for most folks (even Quicktime Pro costs $30). You'd edit them like any other file. In my playing I've found it's easier to save the WMV in a MOV wrapper in QuikckTimePro and then edit the MOV file in iMovie or FPC (whatever your comfortable with). If you import the WMV directly into iMovie it'll work but might be a bit sluggish depending on your Mac.
One issue that some have raised with this approach is that one has to recompress the joined file as wmv. Ideally one should simply save it (no further compression) as wmv as I think one can do with MS Movie Maker on Windows. I think the Flip4Mac folks are aware if this (if not, I'll make sure they're aware of it) and see if they'll come up with a way to join wmvs with a simple save to wmv instead of recompression.
In any case you can join the files in QuicktimePro (kind of kludgy) or in iMovie or FCP (much easier since they're editing apps).
If you do want to do it in QuicktimePro, my bet is Quicktime Kirk can give a better explanation of it than me. With Flip4Mac wmv works the same way as mov in QuicktimePro.
BTW I do plan on writing a users guide at some point.

  • Cannot remove Safari web-clip widget from dashboard

I created a safari webclip with a very high aspect ratio (it was longer than the height of my screen) and added it to the dashboard. When I went to click the i to edit the settings, it rolled over and is now completely off my screen such that I cannot access it to close it or remove it.
How can I go about removing this dashboard web clip widget with it being off my screen (but still using memory)?

  • Multi-cam edit issues with multiple DSLR clips

    Hello,
Working in CC. I have 2 camera angles that were filmed with 2 DSLRs, and mic'd audio that was recorded into a Zoom H4N. Audio recording never stopped, but due to the nature of DSLRs, the 2 cameras would stop recording every 12 +/- minutes. In this end, I have:
    Camera 1 - 16 clips
    Camera 2 - 17 clips
    Zoom H4N - 1 track
When using the multi-cam source sequence option, it understandably thinks each clip is a new camera/angle. However, that's not very helpful for me when I have 17 angles (15 of which are blank) showing up in the program monitor. Any suggestions on how to better tackle this dilemma?
    Thank You.

Thanks, Mark. Appreciate the quick response. After messing around, I combined your method with PluralEyes (seemed less tedious that syncing 17 clips manually). There might be a faster/easier way, but this is what I did, in case any one is curious (sounds more tedious than it actual is):
    1. Select cam 1 clip 1, cam 2 clip 1 and external audio in the Browser.
    2. Left-click, "create Multi-Camera Source Sequence." Two angles and audio are now in a multi-cam sequence. Rename as Multicam_Source_Sequence
    3. Create new sequence, called Sequence_01 and open in timeline.
    3. Excluding cam 1 clip 1 and cam 2 clip 1, drag all remaining clips of cam 1 to V1, all remaining cam 2 clips to V2, and single external audio to A3 into Sequence_01 timeline.
    4. Launch Sequence_01 into PluralEyes 3. Sync and Export.
    5. Open PluralEyes' "Sequence_01_synced" (not "Sequence_01_synced Replaced") in timeline.
    6. Find a good marker point toward the beginning of the audio where it has synced cam 1 clip 2 and cam 2 clip 2. Cut at that point.
    7. Copy all video tracks (exclude audio tracks).
    8. Find Multicam_Source_Sequence and open in timeline (un-nested, so that all tracks are revealed).
    9. Manually find the same audio marker point where you cut in Sequence_01_synced. Place playhead directly at cut point.
    10. Paste video clips. All tracks are now synced in a multi-cam sequence.
From here, it's the usual steps for preparing multi-cam editing, like you mentioned.
    11. Create new sequence, called Multicam_Working_Sequence. Open in timeline.
    12. Make sure nesting button is turned on in timeline.
    13. Drag Multicam_Source_Sequence into Multicam_Working_Sequence.
    14. Right-click the nested sequence>Multi-Camera>Enable.
    15. Enable Multi-camera view in Program Monitor's panel menu.
Voila! Took me awhile, but this works. And no 17 angles popping up in the program monitor. Let me know if you'd add (or remove) anything. Thanks, again!

  • Playback different than Clip Capture Setting?

    Hi All!
I am in a dilemma. I am capturing from a miniDV (not HD!) a clip that was shot in wide screen, so I set my capture input ti DVD NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic. However, when I try to play the captured clip, it is not preserving its initial wide screen size (it is streched to the viewer size)
Any clue what I might be doing wrong??
    Thanks,

Many thanks!! That was exactly it - I had to check the anamorphic check box - everything is back in shape!
    Thanks a ton!!

  • Partner application and web clipping.

    Hi All,
I am trying to add an external application (say my.yahoo.com) to a webclipping and its throwing the below error in the application log.
WC-517 : SSL handshake failed with the url ...
I have checked the file ca-bundle.crt and the certificates are in place. Does anybody know how to go about debugging this problem as I am quite new to portals and at my wits end to solve it.
Also I would be greatful if anybody can suggest me the steps on adding an Apex application configured as partner application with SSO authentication to a web clipping. There seems to be little or no-documentation at all in this regard(as far as my search goes).
    Thanks in advance
    -Venkat

I finally got it working by VERY CAREFULLY reading the instructions in the install.txt document in the SSO SDK package. You have to set up the partner application with a new schema in the login server database, and run the regapp.sql script AFTER editing it to insert data from the Login Server Partner Application admin screen. After you register the partner app in Portal, it gives you some info (site token, listener token, encryption key, etc). You have to MANUALLY copy these and paste them into the regapp.sql script, then run the script in the partner app schema. Make sure you don't confuse capital I with numeral 1 (like I did, since Oracle so nicely uses a non-serif font where you can not tell the difference).
Also make sure you copy the exact values for these parameters into your code when you use the SSOEnabler class. The listener token was very confusing since different documents appear to disagree on whether it should include the partner app name or not. It does require the partner app name:
    app-name:hostname:port
hostname and port are for the web server that is handling http requests for the login server (usually your main portal web server).
