Cloning (Time Machine) a hardrive from an older Macbook to a new One

I'm looking to purchase a new Macbook Pro. My current one is about 3 years old.
I'm set up with Logic, lot's of other plugins and software as well as a offloaded sample library on an external drive.
Do not want to reinstall software and figure out all the little details that went into filing things, drivers, etc.....and mostly because I've forgotten most of it over the years. Right now my Macbook works the way I want it too....
Question: Can I use Time Machine to basically clone my current drive and bring this "clone" onto the new Macbook drive, plug in my sample libary external drive (that's aliased in all the right places...) and be off and running like nothing ever changed....or is there more to it than this?
Before I drop the $$$, I need to assess how hard this is going to be.
thanks in advance....

If that's the case then I assume there's no need (or point) to clone anything and if I did it sounds like I couldn't boot up anyways. This is not a good thing....correct? You're saying I just need to hook up the two computers, "migrate" thru setup and I'm done, but that sounds too easy.  Don't know anything about this migration process, but the concern is the same....does it put everything in the exact same location and/or order as the old drive (ie: this is what I understand cloning does which is what allows it maintains all the pointers to data, etc....).  For some reason I'm not convinced that I'll be able to just pick up and run like I did in SL once this is done.
Here's a stupid question. Is there anything that would prevent me from wiping out Lion, installing Snow Leapord on the new machine, Clone my old machine onto the new hardrive and then update the OS back to Lion?
Sounds like a roundabout way of acheiving the same thing, but at least the location and pointers would be maintained....or should be anyways.
Am I making this more complicated than it needs to be??
thank you for your input....much appreciated. Just want to make sure I got this straight before wiping everything out and pulling the trigger

I have a MacBook pro that has power issues and will not start but the hardrive is fine.  I do not want to lose all of my files so I was wondering if it's possible to transfer my hardrive from a older Macbook pro to a new one if I were to purchase a new one?  Also, the software is not updated as the computer hasn't worked for about 2 months.
Also, if it is possible to transfer the hardrive, would my iTunes music transfer as well?  It is not saved in the cloud.
Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

You computer is probably perfectly repairable, but if you want a new one anyway, it is perfectly possible to transfer the data from the faulty one.
But it would be a mistake to simply put the old HD in the new computer.
    These are the steps:
Remove Hard drive from faulty computer. (very easy on Unibody MBPs, do-able but not so easy on older MBPs)
Put it in a cheap enclosure
    Connect it the new computer
    Boot up new computer.
If the new computer has never been run before the Setup Assistant will ask if you want to import your apps, data, settings etc from either another mac, another HD connected to the Mac or a Time Machine back up.
Obviously chose the second option (another HD connected to this Mac) and follow prompts.
If the new computer has already been run (so Setup Assistant doesn't run when you boot it up), you will need to use Migration Assistant...or run the installer again so that Setup Assistant runs again.

I share this person's pain.  And was just now about to ask the same question.  So, in effect we're screwed.  I have the disc but without a drive I think E12 and this computer is going to have a very short life in my life.  And for the life of me, why is so darn hard to get questions answered by Adobe?  Good grief...I have 2 books and have saty through enough video "tutorials" to last me for some time!

  • How can I move Acrobat 9 Pro from my old MacBook to a new one?

    Hi there,
How can I move Acrobat 9 Pro from my old MacBook to a new one?
    Thanks!

    Hi cialbert,
Do you have the install media? If not, you can download Acrobat from here: Download Acrobat products | 9, 8 - Adobe.  You'll need your Acrobat serial number (see Find your serial number quickly - Adobe).
Note, as well, that the licensing agreement allows you to activate the software on up to two computers. If you've already activated it on two computers, deactivate on one before installing on the new computer (see Activation & Deactivation Help).
I think that should take care of it! Please let us know if you need additional help.
    Best,
    Sara

I moved from an old macbook to a new one.  I have installed Office for Mac 2011. I copied all my files from my old notebook onto a hard drive.  On trying to setup my mail, i went into my hard drive and accessed microsoft user identities, office 2011 and it shows the database but wont let me select it.  Its almost as if the file is there but not accessable.  I desperately need to access my old mail.  How do I do this?  I am fairly confident that I copied all files off my old notebook.  Is there a way for me to search for the Database file?  Maybe I copied it to a different location?  Urgent help please.

Hello mafrerichs and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
Simplest way is to use Target Disk mode:

and hook to another Mac and use CCC or SuperDuper and clone your HD to another drive.
You could also pull the drive out of your MBP and use an external USB case or SATA - USB dongle to hook it to another Mac.

  • How can i copy programs, like photoshop, excel, from an old macbook to my new one?

HOw can I copy programs like photoshop, excel, ...., from my old macbook to my new one?

    Setup Assistent.
When you first start the new Mac one of the first question will be do you wish to restore from another Mac. If the other Mac is on the network you can use Setup Assistent to migrate everything over from the old Mac to the new Mac.

You don't transfer anything. You simply deactivate on the old system from the Apple menu --> Deactivate and then install from scratch on the new one.

  • Restoring a IPhone from a older backup before a new one.

Last night around 8 I restored my iphone to mess with downgrading to a older version then 1.1.3. I did a backup to make sure when I upgrade back to 1.1.3 that I will get everything back. It took a long time, but now when I go back to restore from my backup, all it shows is a backup date of when I was done at 2 in the morning. Where did the older one go? I was docking and undocking my phone and shutting it off and resetting itunes so does that mean that it overrider the older backup?.
Does this mean that my backup is now empty and all my contacts and settings are gone? Please help! Can I choose to restore from the older backup from 8pm? I already did the newer restore but never synced all the way because of time, and so far all my contacts are empty!

Itunes only keeps one backup and overwrites the backup each time there is a change. The only way I know of to keep this from happening is to pull a copy of the backup out of the itunes folder and store it somewhere else. That way you can always drop it back in at a later date if you need to.
Windows users can find the backup here: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
    Mac users: Username/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

  • What is best way to transfer files from an older imac to a new one?

I have time machine on old intel imac.  I have 700gb used on old and don't want to transfer everything (trying to use this  "set up" process to also keep old unused stuff from transferring to the new imac). I can use firewire to transfer.  I have read the Apple support article on migration but I'm not clear on the ability to drag and drop only what I want to transfer. Thanks

Thanks.  Wonder if you can advise further:
As I noted, when I get around to starting  this transfer next week, I want to carefully move files to the new imac almost "one at a time" or groups of files at a time (not literally.)  Reason: 1. in order not to move some old files that I don't want on the new mac, but I'm reluctant to delete from old mac yet.  And 2. I'm fairly certain there is a corrupted file somewhere in the old mac. This is Apple Store Genius bar tech's conclusion after several visits and attempte over the last 6 months to do iphone 4 OS updates on this old mac which resulted in failure to update - received error "device not eligible for rebuild."  I was eventually able to perform the updates on my iphone 4 using my wife's newer Macbook, which she and my son use for their iphone 4s and with which they never encountered the same failure.  And yes, the latest ios5 update also failed on the old imac(again did the update using the macbook.
(BTW, I did the update using the macbook, then return to the old imac to restore my iphone using the itunes on it.)
Also, FYI -  this old imac is not a core 2 duo so it won't accept Lion.
So that was a long way of saying I don't want to chance moving a corrupted file to the new imac.
Therefore, can you direct me to instructions that would direct me to, as example, move this first, then this, then this, and so on.
I have several users on this old mac, although my user has the most files, many iphoto and imovie files and it is critical that my user files are moved successfully.
Also, I use time machine to back up on an external HD, and I use Carbonite too.
    Any advise appreciated.

  • How can I get data from an older iPhone onto a new one?

I had an older 3G which couldn't synch anymore with the new OS6, so the recent data on the phone did not get onto the new one I just received. What is the best way to get this data (mainly calendar and contact updates) on to my new phone?

All iTunes levels are  backwards compatible to 3G
    BUT
the 3G will not update past iOS 4.2.1

  • How do I move my music from an older macbook to the new iPhone 4s?

My macbook is old (OS X 10.4.11), so I can't update iTunes to a newer version. All the tutorials on syncing deal with newer OSs. I have TONS of music on my macBook, and I want to be able to use it on my new phone, but nothing happens when I plug it in to my laptop.
I know most people don't keep technology as long as I do, but my laptop works great. I don't need a new one, and I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars trying to update to a new OS.
Any savvy techs out there who know of a loop hole of how to get the music files to the iPhone?
    Thanks!

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your devices sync with a photos folder you will need to copy this over and update the settings on the photo tab to point to the new location.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • I want to move Pages from my old macbook to  my new one. How do I do that best?

I am moving from my 2007 Late, 13 inch Macbook to a new Macbook Pro, Retina, 15 inch, 2013 Early. I am not sure how best to do this and stay within the proper guidelines for Copyright.

If you have iWork installed from a retail box you need to use that DVD to install on the new Mac. If your purchase was a "single-user" license (actually single computer), you will need to delete the iWork folder from the Applications folder on the older Mac to stay within the software license. Unlike other software companies, Apple doesn't track installations.

  • After using migration to transfer data from my old MacBook to my new one, I can't find pages and I don't really want to pay to redownload it.

I had all the data from my old one to my new one, and now I can't find pages on my new macbook air... any suggestions?

Anything purchased from the Mac App Store will appear under "Purchased". Download it. You don't have to pay for it again.
If you purchased iWork on disc, copy it from the old MacBook.
