Clueless returnee

I am resuming Java programming after an absence of a couple of years. I started by installing JBuilder 3.0 and SDK 1.3.1 and trying to modify a program I wrote in 1999. It runs fine in the JBuilder IDE. I used the JBuilder deployment tool to create a .jar file, then InstallAnywhere Now 4.0 to make an installation file with the VM included. The installation completes, but when I try to run the program (LK), I get the error:

I don't know if this is a JBuilder problem, an SDK installation problem, or an InstallAnywhere problem. Any clue will be appreciated. Thanks!

I think I figured it out. It was an installation problem. Bundling swingall.jar and putting it in the classpath seems to work. Sheesh.

If you found Safari in the Trash it was probably the Safari.app itself. Icons on the Dock do not go into Trash. They drag off and "Poof".
That means that the app, itself is on your Desktop. Choose it and Get Info (command-i). Does it say, "Safari.app"? Drag it back into /Applications folder. Then drag your icon off the Dock and create a new one by dragging Safari.app to the Dock. It will create an alias which is all the Dock icons are.
The question mark means an alias has lost the path to the application. Have your other users drag it off the Dock and drag it from the applications folder to create a new alias on the Dock.

Clueless Mom needs HELP!

Hi, any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.:)
My daughter will be 10 next month and my son is 8 1/2. Both of them want ipods for Christmas. I have searched on this site for information regarding the purchase of them and now am more clueless then before.
In your opinion which Ipod whould be the most appropriate for these ages?
What other items would I need to purchase in addition to what is included with the Ipod? cases, cables, itunes gift cards, etc.
I am leaning towards the ipod nano.
I'm thinking that they both would mainly downloads their already owned CD's to the Ipod....and maybe every now and then download a few new songs from Itunes store. I really don't want to spend a lot of money on these once I purchase them.
They also have mentioned MP3 players but there are so many different types of those that I feel more comfortable purchasing a name brand that I know like Apple.
Basically what information I would like is what I need to put under the tree for them to open up on Christmas morning and have everything they need to use the ipod and to use for many years to come.
All this new technology leaves this Mom baffled!!!!

No, you don't know my kids. My daughter is very musical...has been in numerous musicals, drama camps, etc. She has more CD's then I by far and has a great love of music. They both have cd players, game boys, and play on the computer. My daughter is a little irresponsible with her things and my son, who is 8, takes more care with his things.
I really don't think playing movies is an issue and something they need. So I guess the nano is the one I would go with.
So now at least I have narrowed it down to that.
What else do I need to purchase to have the Ipod Nano usable from the start? Yes, we have a computer that I am typing on right now;)
A protector will be a sure thing and a couple of Itunes gift cards.........anything else.

Clueless as to whether I can do this or not in a program like Numbers

Before I begin - my disclaimer...
I have very little training in this area, and am completely clueless whether this can even be done.
I am trying to consider whether we will be able to create our own charting system in a medical clinic. In beginning to play with the idea - the first thing that I need to find out would be does a database program like numbers have the ability to create full sentences from information in a give data field? From there it becomes can you create a workflow that would take data from selected fields in a data base to populate a completed paragraph.
e.g. - based solely on how I would envision something like this to work (this is not based on anything concrete that I've seen in the past).
Data/Value in Cell A2 (from some sheet), would automatically populate the dot phrase in a partially pre-populated sentence. So that if that data in the previous mentioned Cell A2 was "considerable pain" (let's say from a pop-up cell)... then... the following would be completed via automation.
The patient reported on intake today <value of A2:from some sheet> in the area of chief complaint.
So that maybe on another sheet the Sentence would read - "The patient reported on intake today considerable pain in the area of chief complaint."
Below is a sample from a form I've created that we use as a digital new patient intake form. I'd like to know if we can create something along the lines of the above mentioned to create the paragraph following the screen capture below. For illustration purpose, I've italicized the text in the full sentences with the data taken from each field of the chart. Those fields in blue from the chart are cells whose format is pop-up. The green text is data typed/dictation into the given cell.
The patient reported on intake today that the symptoms began while bending over to scratch an itch on her ankle. The initial presentation was reported as immediate, with no changes since onset. There have since been changes in the patient's breathing, with an increase in symptoms with coughing, and straining.
Again - I have no formal training in this other than creating the above mentioned chart.
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

To only answer the question you asked, the answer is yes you can do those specific tasks you mentioned.
My example:
Since you don't want the sentence if A2 is blank you would modify this formula to something like this:
=IF(ISBLANK(A2),"","the patient reports "&A2&" that won't leave.")
I don't see a problem if all you are looking to do is to translate your form or forms into a report. I could even see several different forms reporting to one sheet that tracks their history. It may require a lot of maintenance if there are an increasing number of forms reporting.
Sometimes merged cells create difficulty in Numbers. A mix of popups and checkboxes may complicate things.
I think the previous advice may turn out to be the best, though. You are asking,"If I head this way am I headed to Japan?" I am saying "Yes". They are saying, "You will need a boat!"

Clueless -please help

In my control panel, I have two java icons. One is a simple java one with two wisps of flame and it just says Java underneath, the second is a more complex java icon with more flames and Java plug-in 1.3.1_09 underneath. If I right click the first one and open, it opens a Java control panel, though I haven't a clue what to do with it so I have left it well alone. However, when I try to open the second icon, I get an error message saying that the system is missing the following registry item: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Plug-in\F3.1_09. In my Add/Remove, I have listed J2SE Runtime Environment 5 Update 1 and Java Web Start only. In Internet Explorer 6, when I go to View, I get Java Console and the following Microsoft (R) VM for Java, 5.0 and various sub-heading underneath like help, clear etc.The only settings for Java from Tools/Advanced involves Microsoft VM: I just have the Java console enabled. Under security, again I have only settings for VM. I haven't got a clue what I'm doing and if the settings are correct, but it would seem to me that what I have downloaded from Java isn't being used and I'm just using VM. When I try to download from the Java site, I am told I have the latest version of whatever.The Add/Remove shows J2SE RE 5 Update 1 as installed -when I click on it I get the install menu again (normal??), but the lack of icons in the Internet Explorer menu obviously means it is not available. I would be very grateful if some kind person could tell me what to do, as I am obviously not using what I've got. Thanks in advance. Rob (technogically clueless)

You have a few issues.
First, it appears that you at one time had Java version 1.3.1_09 installed. I assume it no longer exists, possibly it was manually deleted. If you know that it's gone, you can remove the (leftover and invalid) Windows Control Panel entry. The third item, How do I remove an applet from Control Panel? on this webpage tells you what to do:

The remaining Java entry (the one with the two wisps) should be the Java Control Panel that was installed when the version 1.5.0_01 was installed. Check that by opening it and clicking the General tab | About, which should show Version 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_01-b08).
Second, the Java Web Start entry in the add/remove list is also old and leftover, and should be removed. Java Web Start is now part of Java 5, and it will remain (there is no add/remove entry for it.)
Third, you are correct - IE is currently using the Microsoft Java virtual machine (jvm). To change IE over to use Sun's jvm, open the "two wisps" Java Control Panel | Advanced tab | <APPLET> tag support and check Internet Explorer. This will add a Sun entry to IE's Tools/Advanced list, and also a Sun Java Console entry to IE's Tools menu.
These steps should take care of the problems. If you run into additional problems or questions, the Help and FAQ items at http://www.java.com have a lot of information, and should be reviewed.

I'm trying to build a dynamic table that functions as a calendar...(see http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/javacook/chapter/ch18.html for the basic idea and code structure).
Here's the problem...I want to make each date inside of the table a hyperlink to a new page. I figured out how to create the hyperlinks, but I CAN'T figure out how to create hyperlinks that pass variables to a new page.
Here's the code that works:

Hi. The expression "<%=some_Java_expression %>" is the JSP tag, that returns string value to HTML code. You should use it in HTML block like:
<%String myname="Ivan"; %>
<body>
<p>My name is: <%=myname %></p>
But You tried to use it inside the string expression and it generated some code like this:
<a href="newpage.jsp?year=<%=yy%">...
, didn't it?
It invokes method out.print(" ... "), that prints this string value (but in the HTML block). So You tried to print something inside the print method. You should rewrite Your code like this:

STATUS UNAVAILBLE AND THE REP I GOT IS SO CLUELESS!! SO ANNOYED!!

i checked my staus earlier today and the order said it has shipped but now i cant see it it keeps coming out unavaiable so i call a rep and ask him whats going on he says its been shut down temporairly also when i ask him to check my order status he right away without any of my info says it will be shipped on the 10th i tell him that last time i checked it said shipped then i tell him my cousin already got a shipping conformation email and has estimated delivery tomrrow and he says flat out "its not true" im like what do you mean i was right next to her when she got it and i saw the tracking aswell he say no you must be mistaken its not true I got frustrated and told him that im looking at it right now and he just kept repeating to me thats not true finally I told him if I can talk to someone whos not clueless and he put me on hold and hanged up lol omg seriously this is so annoying

While it is possible that the phones will be getting shipped out tomorrow I find it kind of hard to believe. After all, if they already shipped then this was less of a pre-order and more of a 'OMG! we have limited number of these but we're selling what we have a week ahead of when our contract with apple says we can!!1!' So really, I won't buy it until someone post pics of them recieving a VZW branded iphone. (BTW, i'm not saying you didn't get the message, I just think the message is wrong)

Clueless how to mate the AC3 sound file given me with my video project

Hi gang. This morning I started researching how to do this, but haven't figured it out yet.
My DSLR projct has ben edited on Premiere Pro CS5. I created the project in stereo and once I picture locked, outputted an OMF file to the sound mixer.
He just delievered to me an AC3 file. I've no idea what to do next.
I'd like to mate the AC3 with my video, of course. Do I do that in Premiere Pro? Do I export an uncompressed AVI video file and somehow mate the two together somewhere else?
Clueless here.
(of note: This Friday I am having a screening of three of my short films, including this one. The screener will be on DVD and has to be an auto play DVD, something you can pop into the player, no menus, it just plays and goes from video to video. I created a couple test DVD's in Encore and it worked.)

Export out a video file. Bring that and the .ac3 file into Encore for DVD authoring.

No MP3 Export? Is Adobe cheap or clueless?

Come ON! I can't be the only person who frequently needs to export an MP3 clip from a video project. Did Adobe decide a small licensing fee would take too much of the $1600 I paid for their software suite, or are they just clueless that customers NEED this functionality. Don't tell me, "Oh, you can export a WAV, then install and load a conversion program, then convert to MP3." I paid Adobe money to make my life EASIER. Why don't they care?

Well, maybe none of these "professionals" have ever had to send out 8 hours worth of material for transcripts!
For Audio-only, I would use Audition, or some Audio editing program. To damn an NLE for it's lack of Audio Export for all possible choices is senseless. I would use the correct tools for the job, regardless if they are Adobe, or otherwise.
BTW, I happen to have six Audio editors that do a great job with MP3's. Luckily, I do not need to compress my Audio, so it's moot to me. Still, I could, if I needed to do so.
No one program can do everything with everything. I find Titler to pale besides my InDesign, or even my WordPerfect. Not even close. Hey, Titler does not do half of what my PS, or my AI can do. Am I concerned? Nah - I use the tools that I need to use.
Sorry, but I just do not get it here.

Clueless on syncing/streaming

After thinking I understood this, I am now aware I am clueless. First of all, my current set up.
I have TV shows (seasons of 24, as an example) on my AppleTV that I have purchased. At other times I have made those purchases from the Apple Store via my computer (the one connected to AppleTV). But, not everything shows available on the AppleTV. As an example, season one of Deadwood shows up on the AppleTV whereas I have seasons one and two on the iTunes library. Similarly, all seasons of 24 show up on the AppleTV but only seasons one and five show up on my iTunes.
And to complicate things more, at one time I had much of my music on the AppleTV.
I would like to get this all reorganized and free up space on the AppleTV, so:
1) How do I get the music off of the AppleTV?
2) How do I get everything purchased, either via AppleTV or iTunes into my iTunes library?
3) I have episodes showing up on my AppleTV with a little blue ball next to them. When I select to view, the streaming display comes up, but nothing happens. This just recently occurred while I've been dinking with the sync options. Any idea what I screwed up here?
4) Is there a simple method to remove items (such as those you've already watched and have already saved on the iTunes library) off of your AppleTV to free up space?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Choose the manual sync option and you can pick & choose what gets copied over.

If you look on the sidebar of iTunes, there is a Purchased, uh, category or selection or list or whatever you want to call it. Click on it and see if what is in that list matches what the AppleTV can see. You can start dragging more content into Purchased and that should make it available.

No idea - the little blue ball just indicates that it's a new TV episode that you have not accessed yet. See my previous suggestion.

Again, you can hard-sync your picks. But, I think there's an option to sync all unwatched TV episodes and movies if I'm not mistaken. You can check that out and see if it works for you.
You'll always be able to stream stuff as long as you're connected to iTunes. I personally don't bother syncing anything, I just let it auto-sync whatever it wants (it has a preference for Battlestar Galactica it seems) and stream whatever I need.

Time Machine clueless about external HD connected to Airport Extreme

This is not my first post about HD connected to Airport Extreme. Just came back from Apple store. Spoke to Geniuses there in tech support desk and they are clueless.
Here is situation: have 7 Macs in the house connected to Airport Extreme wirelessly. In that respect things are working fine. Last week I purchased brand new WD My Book external HD and connected it to Airport Extreme using USB (it also has Fire Wire but that is not a point here).
As per forum advices I re-formated drive using disk utility to Mac Extended journaled, GUID. here is result:
iMAC x 3, with Tiger - see, mount and use My Book easily, shows on desktop as mounted drive
MacBook Pro w. Tiger - same as above, back up every day to My Book
MacBook with Leopard x 2 - no My Book on desktop, Time Machine doesn't see it
Mac Mini with Leopard - same as above, no trace of My Book, Time Machine doesn't see it
* This problem evolved from me having regular 160 GB FAT32 HD connected to Airport Extreme. Again Tiger machines were using that drive every day no sweat.
* Then I decided to upgrade all Macs to Leopard for one single reason only - Time Machine. (Good that I didn't do it but rather decided to introduce new, bigger and better USB drive first).
* Western Digital My Book is being sold in Apple stores as "drive that is recognized by Time Machine" so I bought 1TB unit.
* All Macs and Airport Extreme are up to date.

I cannot tell you why your Apple Genius told you what he did, but he/she was dead wrong. Apple sells its Time Capsule product, so they are not interested in making the AEBS a product competitor.
I will give you a little secret for which you will forever be indebted to me.
Open your Terminal application in the Utilities folder and at the prompt enter or paste the following command pressing RETURN after:
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
Miraculously your problem will be Solved.

Help - clueless about new external hard drive

Sorry I am a bit clueless. I Have an iMac G5 and just purchased a Western Digital elements external HD to store my music and photos on. I plugged it in and see the icon -now what? do I just start dragging things over? Once I drag thing over should I keep a copy on my Hard drive? Do I unplug this thing when it is not in use?
Any info would be great! Sorry I lack the knowledge and I hope someone can help me out!

Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase it in the Mac OS Extended format, and then follow the instructions here and here. Drag the disk to the Trash or push the eject button to the right of it in the sidebar before unplugging it.

CS CC installed but crashes on launching in windows 8. No idea how to fix it and adobe support seems clueless too.

I installed CC. On launching it crashes. I was advised to uninstall and reinstall. This has been done twice. same problem persists. This is a windows 8 machine. Can anyone help?

You have not provided any useful technical info like full system specs or the crash logs, so no, we are as clueless as support.
