Codec Help

Hey everyone.
A quick question i hope, i am giving a presentation and showing some video clips i have edited using FCP Studio, i am having a problem however when exporting. All the video export files are very low quality; they appear very jagged with very pronounced horizontal lines across the image no matter what size i view them at.
I have tried using different codec’s, but none as yet really give me any better results, can anyone suggest any codec’s or any advice relating to this matter.
Thanks in advance, regards, James.

Hi James- Are you attempting to make the files smaller or just get them out of FCP. The best output format for dv quality video is the dv codec. You can export a quictime dv file like this.
File--> Export--> Using Quicktime Conversion--> Format=Quicktime Movie---> Options--> Video Settings--> Compression Type= DV/DVCPRO NTSC Frame Rate=29.97 Quality= Best
Now this tends to make a much more simple action more complex which could be achieved simply by using
File--> Export to quicktime movie
However, the former gives you more options and ensures all is set properly.
Secondly, I have made a few assumptions. 1. You are in an area that uses the NTSC system. 2. You are using drop-frame timecoding. 3. Your original material was dv footage. Let me know if it still looks bad and we'll see if we can't fix it. Good Luck!

    Hello Nariman,
    thanks for your answer
    1. Exactly what version does it say you have?
    Version 7.2.0.43
    2. what happens if you open other types of files like .MOV or WMV and convert to Cineform?
I tested it with mov- and wmv-files:
    No, same problem: [..\..\Src\LegacyTime.cpp-101]
    3. what happens if you take your Cineform files and convert them to other formats like H264?
    This works fine.
    4. How large or small are your files?
The size of the files is between 70MB and 300MB, but 90 % of them are between 90MB and 130 MB.
5  Are these stills or movies ?  How many minutes?
All items are pre-keyed movies (which I exported from after effects via media encoder to the 4k-cineform files). The length of all files is between 2 und 5 seconds.
    6. Are you using 3rd party plugin to import and export Cineform?
I have got the cineform studio premium codec installed. It shows up directly in the media encoder options. So I don't use anything else than media encoder and the cineform codec

  • Photoshop 6 - Cannot open AVI files or fix codecs - help !

I am running PS6 and want to open and edit AVI files. When I try to do that I get an error message saying "the video file cannot be opened" . This seems to apply to ALL avis - yet I can open and edit MP4, MMV etc. I installed Gspot to track whether it was a codec issue and when I try to open ANY file I get this error message : "Warning: DirectShow crashed while GSpot was attempting to obtain information about a codec.  This is usually due to damaged, misconfigured, conflicting, or poorly written codec drivers.  It is possible, perhaps even likely, that other media players will crash when they attempt to play this file as well, as most of them will also use DirectShow.  GSpot was able to intercept the crash, and has attempted to identify the codec or filter involved; uninstalling or reinstalling this codec or filter may solve the problem.  The codec was tentatively identified as:  C:\Windows\system32\imaadp32.acm Unknown video codec #11" I have NO idea where to go from here. I see a site to download the "imaadp32.acm"  codec but what about the "Unknown video codec #11". What the heck is that and what do I do about it. Any help would be appreciate, Cliff
ps I should add that the avi files DO open and play in Bridge. I have the latest Quicktime. Everything is up to date and PS and the computer is otherwise working perfectly !

See your other post. The forum was offline for a while, so things may not have shown up in the way they should.

  • Canon 5d codec help

I shoot with a Canon 5d Mark II and want to edit the video in Final Cut Express. When I try to import the files directly out of the camera they play very jumpy and FCE wants to render them every time I place a cut on the timeline. A friend of mine suggested I use a Codec converter, but is that really the best way of doing this?
His solution was converting the files to an Apple codec and then the quick export will export it just fine without re-rendering. The problem is that exported version didn't show the transitions in my video right so I had to render it back to the H.264 (i think) codec so it would play correctly. This all seems like a long process just to get the video out. I figure there's more of you out there who shoot with the 5d and do stuff with the video. Please help me improve my workflow.

I've been looking into this exact scenario (before purchasing FCE). A videographer friend of mine told me about a free software package called MPEG Streamclip to transcode the video to pretty much anything else, since the h.264 is apparently terrible to work with!
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
I have NOT sued it yet, but my friend suggested I look at it because he uses it as well. He's a Final Cut Pro guy, but I'm guessing that this will work in FCE too? let me know what you find out. I'm on the fence of buying FCE!

  • QuicktimeKirk H.264 codec help

    Dear QuicktimeKirk,
what settings do you use to clear up your video(quicktime movie)exports using the H.264 codec to clear video?(Iam a old fan of quicktime but Iam new to the codec.)Iam still getting the small pixels and fuzziness on my movie.
Would you recommend your settings on every movie?

I export from the best source available. I use the original source exported directly to .mov or .mp4 using the H.264 video codec.
If the file has already been processed to something (.mov, .mp4 or any MPEG flavor) I first export the file back to DV Stream and use this new file for the H.264 export.
It will not be as good as using the original source but, it will be much better than if you compressed (using H.264) an already compressed file.
H.264 isn't a magic bullet. It can't repair a poorly compressed file and it will not dramatically improve an already compressed file.
I think the Windows Movie Maker software allows you to export to some sort of DV (Digital Video) format. This will not add any new data to an already compressed file but it will not further compress the file either.
Don't try to increase the dimensions of the file. If it was 320X240 when first made (or compressed) leave it at that size when you apply the H.264 codec.
I hope this helps answer your questions.

  • PCM Audio Codec Help

    Hello,
I am currently trying to submit a commercial for Comcast cable to be aired. They rejected the spot and asked for me to "resend the spot using PCM" and that the audio codec was the problem.
After reading up on it, I am still confused about how exactly to achieve this.
In general they want either MPEG-1 Layer 2 or LPCM SMPTE 302M encoding. Any help on how to create this would be great.
    Thanks

    Hi G.
Hard for us to tell you how to adapt your current workflow (to produce an export with audio that conforms to the needed specs) without you first telling us what your existing (or preferred) export workflow is.
Need more details. That said, its hard to go wrong as these settings are generally the default:
If you are using Quicktime Conversion then press Options to bring up the Movie Settings window, and click on Sound >> Settings... Format >> Linear PCM is usually the default.
If you are using Compressor to export an MPEG Transport Stream (or Program Stream) then MPEG-1/Layer 2 audio is the default.
    Hope it helps

  • Green line on movies bottom when converted with H264/MPEG4 codecs-HELP PL!

    Hi all,
Every time I convert movies from any Quicktime-readable format to .mov format (including .mov to .mov), the resulting movie has a (horrendous) *green line* on the bottom.
This happen only when I use Quicktime Pro. No other application give me this bad result.
As only one of many examples you can see in this screenshot a movie (right) made using iShowU with "Apple none" codec, which means that is totally uncompressed.
To reduce the size I have used QT with H264 codec. The result is (always) that green line (left).
No matter if I change the movie size or crop it. After all when I export it to save, the green line will be there again.
Could somebody please help me with this issue?
    http://img.skitch.com/20080820-d4623ia122inbdbwex6c7cciyb.png
    *Thank you very much.*

    Thank you David.
    Did work!
I also read the post you suggested.
My original video was 426x175 and I changed it in the export properties to 426x 174 . One (1) pixel smaller, and voila!
Doing this and reading that post doesn't match with Apple's straight forward style.
Imagine if you have a stubborn movie because of its dimensions?
I felt like doing medieval engineering.
    Thanks a lot again, David.

  • Video/Codec Help

Hi everyone. I have some video files a friend gave me now on my Mac, and half of them don't play... Quicktime seems to be the native program that tries to view all .mpg and .avi files, but half of them work, half of them don't. Note that they all work on my PC. I also have Windows Media Player for the Mac, but that only plays the .wmv files. I tried installing DivX and that didn't help...
What codecs/players am I missing for the Mac? I know the files are not corrupt...?

All a Codec is, is a means of compression. The most common on Macs now are MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and H.264, and Sorenson. Divx is only popular because of a lot of pirated videos being encoded on that format. I will not get into that, as that would be bordering on discussion of illegal activities.
MPEG-2 is the most common format, as that's what most commercial DVDs use.
MPEG-4 has been decided as a common format both by Quicktime and Real.
H.264 is a popular format for encoding HD Video because its compression is very high. The only problem is you need high end hardware to get full 1080i video with it such as dual-processor G5s.
You might want to use the software search engines on http://guide.apple.com/ http://www.versiontracker.com/ and http://www.macupdate.com/ to find alternative players.
Also since you have an Intel Mac, check out the listings of Intel compatible software sites on my http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#INTEL
    page.

  • Codec help for Bridge

I have some videos that are x.avi that have a codec of  h.264/AVC.

  • PE4 Video Codec Help Please

I have two video files types that will not import in PE4. They play fine in VLC media player and I have not found a way to convert them into a usable file, let alone a usable file that maintains the original video quality.
File 1 is a .avi file with XVID video codec at 720x400 and 30 frame rate. Audio is mpga mono 32kHz 64 kb/s.
File 2 is .avi file with XVID video codec at 640x480 and 30 frame rate. Audio is araw mono 8kHz 16b/s.
I would like to either convert these to a usable file or upgrade PE4 so that they will play.
    Any suggestions?

Even with the DivX/Xvid CODEC's, it is likely that neither file will edit well in PE. VLC player has its own set of CODEC's, so it will play most formats and CODEC's.
Now, there is a great difference between playing an AV file and editing that same file. Having the right CODEC's (or access to them through a player like VLC) will only insure playability. Most NLE (Non Linear Editing) programs can work with but a few for editing. As John points out, DV-AVI Type II is what PE (and big-brother PrPro) want most.
You are best to convert these heavily compressed delivery format files to DV-AVI Type II w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio, BEFORE Import.
Even with the proper CODEC's installed, the most common problems with DivX/Xvid will be no Video, no Audio or horrible OOS (Out Of Sync) issues. Conversion BEFORE Import will usually solve these and allow you to edit the larger converted file. Now, the quality lost in the DivX/Xvid compression will still be gone - can't bring that back. Still, you might be able to live with the results. Only you can tell.
    Good luck,

  • Codec help needed - Quicktime to Final Cut

I am having a problem in my workflow using Keynote, QuickTime and Final Cut Pro.
I’m trying to create some presentations in Keynote, export them to Quicktime, then import them into Final Cut Pro and then export them into various formats.
I want to have the ability to export these to DVD in the highest quality possible. I will also be exporting them for web streaming, downloading and to play on iPods in the future.
My understanding is that bigger at the top is better and then I can always export them into smaller formats. Correct? Which leads me to believe I have to use either of the first two options below.
    Keynote slides can start in 1920 x 1080, 1680 x 1050, 1280 x 720, 1024 x 768 and a few small formats. These will export in the same resolution to Quicktime.
After I import them into Final Cut I believe I have to (1) adjust the Sequence settings and (2) in the Audio/Video setting, adjust the Capture and Sequence presets.
I originally was trying to work with 1680 x 1050 but was then told that makes it more time consuming when rendering and exporting my video.
The proportions are fine with me at 1920 x 1080. Should I use that?
But whatever you recommend to start off with, then what do I adjust in my Sequence Settings and in my Audio/Video settings for Capture and Sequence presets?
    Thanks!

    Thank you!
I did what you said, exported at 1920 x 1080 in Apple Pro Res 422. I had to increase the fps back to 60, as the transitions were jagged at 24fps.
The above looks great when I view it in Quicktime.
I imported the above Quicktime file into FCP. FCP did select the settings as above.
When I exported with "current settings", the quality wasn't good.
I tried exporting with Apple Pro Res 422 60i - this wasn't very good.
I tried exporting with Apple Pro Res 422 24p - this wasn't very good.
I tried exporting with Apple Pro Res 422 30p - this was the best. It wasn't as good as the original export from Keynote, pretty good, but noticeably different from the original export.
Is this normal, that I will loose resolution even at the same settings? Or am I still missing something?
I also tried the same thing starting with Apple Pro Res 422 (HQ) 1920 x 1080. I had similar results.

  • Trouble exporting any mov files into H264 after adding K-Lite codec pack into Windows XP SP3.

I have QuickTime 7.7 (1680.34) installed. I have used it extensively and exported the video separate from the audio and extracted and used filters and it has all worked great with all of the other codecs I have had installed. It even worked great after I recently installed this K-Lite codec pack that actually saved files in a *.hdmov file type and I was able to view them with the Media Player Classic .... (I have Windows XP update 3)  and see what I could do over there and then go back to saving them as *.mov file types and work in QuickTime Pro. And still export them relatively fast to their latest H264 format.
I gave more file types to the Media Player Classic. I think along the line of the just the *.3g2 and *.mp4 and took them away from QuickTime but still keeping the *.mov, *.qt and *.mqv  file types .... and that is when I think everything must have changed.  all of a sudden I can not save any *.hdmov files and the export process in QuickTime takes longer than forever.
I thought that I had reconfigured Media Player Classic back to its default ....
and it should all go back to being how it was.
Is there some Direct Show filter or codec that upsets QuickTime Pro ... that I might have not reset back to what it was?
Any codec help would be much appreciated.
This is what the K-Lite site says in one instance about H264:
If the video that you are playing contains H.264 video, then you could try using another decoder. The codec pack by default uses ffdshow for decoding H.264 video. This is a free and open-source decoder. Other decoders exist that have better performance as ffdshow. They should give you smoother playback, specially if you have a dual-core or quad-core processor.
    Alternative H.264 decoders are:
CoreAVC. This decoder is unfortunately not available for free.
DivX H.264 decoder. This decoder is available for free as part of the DivX Bundle. Tip: disable everything in the bundle except the H.264 decoder.
ffmpeg-mt. This is an experimental multi-threaded version of the libavcodec decoding library, which is used by ffdshow. You can select ffmpeg-mt as decoder in ffdshow video decoder configuration.
MPC DXVA H.264 decoder. This is an internal decoder of Media Player Classic Homecinema. It uses your graphics card to perform most of the decoding process, resulting is a very low CPU usage. You can enable this decoder though: MPC Options -> Internal Filters. Note: this decoder has some specific requirements.
I downloaded the DivX bundle and will pull out that codec. I bought the CoreAVC for $13 but Norton said it was a risky file when I downloaded it ... (I have a question into the site about that) and I will try the ffmpeg-mt codec as well as see what they say about the last one. I will also try to undo everything I did that happened I guess before QuickTime started to export so slow that it is not even worth it to try and convert a mov file into H264.
Sorry so long ... I just was trying to lay out the things I have attempted, will attempt to try and improve the situation.
Thanks again very much if anyone makes it thru this ... geez .. sorry.

    Hello Tim,
I decided to do a clean install, a fresh new installation of windows and all its updates, I didn't get the option of
    install SP1 yet.
After that I only installed Catalyst drivers: 11.5 and Realtek HD audio drivers, all downloaded on May 24 2011.
Then latest FFDShow and MPC-HC to test, both x64 versions Nothing else installed.
Only a fresh copy of windows with its updates and those mentioned drivers.
To my surprise, it happened a gain.
It still crashes after a while when playing MKV videos.
It's weird, because it doesn't happen with avi's or mp4's.
So, there must be something wrong with one of windows updates that creates this windows FREEZE.
Also there is no possibility to find out what error it is in "Event Viewer" as nothing gets recorded there. Anyone could
    advise?
    Thanks

  • Image preview in Open dialog window (Photoshop CS6)

    Hi
We had a possibility to see images preview in Open File dialog window of Photoshop CS5 but in new CS6 version there is not such possibility. Should I forget about that nice option and use Mini Bridge?

I'm not so sure it was on purpose or not Noel. Especially since it's still there in Illustrator and Indesign. If it weren't for it being in those, I might think it was intentional. Then again, it could very well be Adobe trying really hard to push MiniBridge, which is almost utterly useless. I think they actually made the minibridge WORSE as well. The sizing issues of the thumbnails on that are a pain and minibridge is just plain cumbersome to run. Anyways, besides my many qualms with minibridge itself, and back on the open dialog box thing...I actually watched a youtube video pointing out the same codecs you're talking about and without the PSD functionality, it's pretty useless. I'm a graphic designer, so I don't really use PS for camera image editing and don't mess with those files that the codec helps with. Even if it did, that still isn't very helpful to me. Because at that point, you're pretty much just doing what Bridge/MIniBridge does. However, consider how I, and many other designers in the print field work: At any given point we might have something like 3 different versions of a file; a PSD (with layers to edit), a JPEG (to send to the customer for proofing), and a PDF (for printing). Now, within that customer folder I might have 50+ files of different jobs. Imagine trying to sift through all those thumbnails, scrolling across window upon window, and when you get to the file you're finally looking for, you click it open to just to see that you opened the jpeg instead of the PSD. Now, in LIST view, I can see many more files on one screen and each file type is represented by an icon. So I know the blue icons are Photoshop icons and it's very easy to skim through there and know exactly which file type I'm looking for without peering at extensions. Get what I'm saying? Not that I don't appreciate you trying to help. Just saying, unless any codec can bring back the preview screen....than I don't see a workaround until Adobe flat out FIXES IT. I'm one of those guys that loves to get the newest thing and give it time to work, but if they don't fix it, I might have to call up Adobe and demand a downgrade on my Photoshop to 5.5, cause it really slows my workflow when I have hundreds of files to keep up with, and any new feature in PS CS6 that might have sped up my work is offset by not being able to do such a remedial task as preview my files before opening them.

  • N79 3D acceleration

    Hi!
I'm thinking about getting the N79, the only thing holding me back is the lack of 3D graphics acceleration....for me it's mostly about watching youtube videos, I'm not much of a gamer. I recently saw someone with an N79 demonstrating the youtube performance and it was of abominably bad quality.....a real let-down.
Is there any way of downloading and installing 3D graphics acceleration yourself or is there any chance of a future firmware upgrade with the addition of this feature?
Is there anyone out there who has no complaints whatsoever regarding youtube on the N79?
    Thanks!

3D acceleration only helps when playing "some" games that make use of the 3D acceleration. Like Global Racer.
3D acceleration doesn't help in video playback.
Accelerated codecs help in video playback.
For example N96 doesn't have 3D acceleration but has H264 accelerated codec so it can play larger rez H264 videos compared to N95.
So don't mix up 3D acceleration and Accelerated codecs. They are not the same things.
640K Should be enough for everybody

  • Am I wise to get elements, i have windows 7 64 bit?

    Hi,
I would really like to get Premier Elements to edit at home, but i keep reading reviews that it doesn't run well on windows 7, 64 bit, even though the official advice says it is compatible. Anyone had any problems with this, does downloading a codec help?
    Thanks!

Version 8, in particular, seems to struggle with Windows 7 64-bit.
Version 7 seems to work okay. And I expect that version 9 -- if and when it is released -- will likely be built for Windows 7.
