Cold backup of High Availability DB 10gR2 in SOLARIS 8 SPARC
Hi
I want to know the procedure of taking Cold backup in Solaris 8 SPARC in
High Availability Environment.
Any reference document will be helpful.
Thanks in advance.
Renuka
That seems to be a contradiction in terms, high availibility and cold backup. When you do a cold backup the database is down and not available. In a primary - standby configuration, you could switch the standby to primary, shutdown the (former) primary and perform a cold backup of it.

you have to install glibc-devel-32 bit and libstdc++-devel 32 bit together with your 64 bit. both libraries required by the Oracle to solve the linking problem.

High Availability for Existing Single Exchange Server holding Multiple Domains
Hi,
I'm trying to implement solution for Backup/Redundancy/High-availability for the existing Exchange Server 2013.
Currently the Exchange Server 2013 deployed on 2012 Server is holding 4 Domains (1 internal domain & 3 public/published domains). The Exchange Server is hosted Internally & published to send & receive mails from the SMTP relay(Third party
resides on internet) server. Client Access & Mailbox Services are on the same server.
Please advice me which is the best scenario to implement a backup/redundancy/high-availability for the current server.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I am doing the following steps for taking Cold Backup
of my Oracle 9i Database (On Solaris).
The Database is not enabled for Archive Mode.
a)sqlplus /nolog
b)conn / as sysdba
c)start up
d)alter database backup control file to '/backup/control.ctl'
e)alter database backup control file to trace
f)shutdown immediate
g)exit
h)Manually copy all the .dbf and init.ora files to a seperate directory.
Are all the above steps correct.
If yes,can anyone give me a script which i can run manually so as to take the cold Backup.

Backup DB's on High Availability issue
I have an issue with backing up the DB's from cluster server that have 2 nodes on him.
I have a Cluster server with High Availability (for Active/Active cluster) and I trying to take a full backup from him but it says that :
The selected backup type is not supported on a "Always on secondary replica"...
And sending me to Microsoft webpage :
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=208213
Active Secondary's: Backup on Secondary Replicas.
All I want to do is to backup the primary node with Full Backup type on nightly basis and shrink the log file . (without un-synchronizing every day)
Thank youUse copy_only for full backup on secondary.
Backup Types Supported on Secondary Replicas
BACKUP DATABASE supports only copy-only full backups of databases, files, or filegroups when
it is executed on secondary replicas. Note that copy-only backups do not impact the log chain or clear the differential bitmap.
Differential backups are not supported on secondary replicas.
BACKUP LOG supports only regular log backups (the COPY_ONLY option is not supported for log
backups on secondary replicas).
A consistent log chain is ensured across log backups taken on any of the replicas (primary or secondary), irrespective of their
availability mode (synchronous-commit or asynchronous-commit).
To back up a secondary database, a secondary replica must be able to communicate with the primary replica and must be SYNCHRONIZED or SYNCHRONIZING.

How to recover a cold backup (Oracle 9i)
Hello,
We got the following situation, one of our clients wants to switch from Oracle 9i to Microsoft SQL Server 2008.
Our client is located in Singapore and we operate in Belgium, they have sent us an external HD with a media/cold backup of their database.
We also got both the database name and the passwords for the database.
In order to get this database available I have taken the following steps:
1)Created an Virtual Machine with Windows XP SP3,
2)Installed Oracle 9i on this VM,
3)Created a database using the database name and passwords given by the client.
Now I want to recover our clients database, how do I do this.
I know there texts about it, but I need a step for step guide to do this (that's the way I learn by seeing how its done and then reproduce it)
Thanks for any responseAfter some calls and putting pressure on our client IT I've been able to find out that there either using 11 or 10g.
Also found out that the name they gave me is not the name they use
So I followed the instructions on [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96521/create.htm#1000691] , I did find some mistakes in the page
I got the following create database statement
CREATE DATABASE dbname
USER SYS IDENTIFIED BY pz6r58
USER SYSTEM IDENTIFIED BY y1tz5p
LOGFILE GROUP 1 ('D:\dbname\redo01.log') SIZE 100M,
GROUP 2 ('D:\dbname\redo02.log') SIZE 100M,
GROUP 3 ('D:\dbname\redo03.log') SIZE 100M
MAXLOGFILES 5
MAXLOGMEMBERS 5
MAXLOGHISTORY 1
MAXDATAFILES 100
MAXINSTANCES 1
CHARACTER SET US7ASCII
DATAFILE 'D:\dbname\system01.dbf' SIZE 700M REUSE
EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL
DEFAULT TEMPORARY TABLESPACE tempts1
TEMPFILE D:\dbname\temp01.dbf' *(The documentation said datafile instead of tempfile)*
SIZE 270M REUSE
SYSAUX DATAFILE 'D:\dbname\sysaux01.dbf' size 700M reuse
UNDO TABLESPACE undotbs
DATAFILE 'D:\dbname\undotbs01.dbf'
SIZE 3984M REUSE AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 5120K MAXSIZE UNLIMITED;
after executing
ORA-01501: CREATE DATABASE failed
ORA-00200: controlfile could not be created
ORA-00202: controlfile: 'D:\dbname\control01.ctl'
ORA-27038: file exists
OSD-04010: <create> option specified, file already exist
So what did I do wrong, altough I'm guessing I copied the original files to early
[code="sql"]DATAFILE 'D:\dbname\system01.dbf' SIZE 700M REUSE
Although I did use reuse
I shutdown the database and removed the files to and replaced them with the files from the client,
Mounted the database succesfully and tried to query the metadata
Mixing the information found on
Creating an Oracle Database,
Oracle Recovery Procedure
Got ORA-01219, which is logical since the databse isn't open yet.
I open the database using alter database open
ORA-01157: cannot identify data file 1 - file not found
ORA-01110: data file 1: '/home/oracle/product/10.1.0/oradata/orcl/system01.dbf'
So any ideas want went wrong this time

Have you executed any other installation prior this attempt?
It seems there are unfinished installations on this server. If this is the case, run the SWPM to uninstall the unfinished installation. Then, execute the installation once again.
Also, make sure all IPs are corrects in the DND and host files. There were cases in which the IPs were not properly configured, or maybe a typo.

How to enable high availability on SQL Server 2005 with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise R2
Dear Folks,
I would like to ask you about this thing. I'm working for IT department for bank in Myanmar. Our bank have up to 96 branches across all of Myanmar including H.O. We are using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 with Windows Server 2008 for our banking
information system. My main problem is having to backup and restore the database backup files every time the servers in branches goes down for whatever reasons. I want to deploy this feature of high availability and failover cluster using Windows Server 2008
and SQL Server 2005. Our branches have 2 Servers. One is for Primary and other is for Backup. What I want to do is that, I want to change Backup Server to Primary Server whenever the Primary Server goes down for whatever reasons. All the working data and databases
from Primary will immediately replicated into Backup Server along with all the IP information of Primary Server. Please give me step by step guide for this process.Try below
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/cindygross/archive/2009/10/23/checklist-for-installing-sql-server-2005-as-a-clustered-instance.aspx
I will recommend you to upgrade SQL server to newer version for support as well as flexibility.

Vishal Patel

Stop and start database for cold backup
Hi,
Database :Oracle 10g R1
OS : Red hat 3
I have a RAC database with 2 nodes.
I build this script to make a cold backup of the database. (I will put it in the cron tab).
My question is the SRVCTL will work in this scripts??
# ***** COLDBACKUP ORACLE DATABASE ON LINUX *****
DIRECTORY=/u02/backup/script/; export DIRECTORY
cd ${DIRECTORY}
# ***** SHUTDOWN THE DATABASE *******
export oracle_sid=RCDB
srvctl stop database -d RCDB
# *****cold backup for "RCDB" database on 13-FEB-07 ... *****
# ***** COPY FILES *****
# Redo logs
cp /u02/oradata/RCDB/redo01.log ${DIRECTORY}
cp /u02/oradata/RCDB/redo07.log ${DIRECTORY}
cp /u02/oradata/RCDB/redo03.log ${DIRECTORY}
cp /u02/oradata/RCDB/redo08.log ${DIRECTORY}
# Datafiles
#*********START UP DATABASE AND SERVICES********
srvctl start database -d RCDB
exit

ASkikaI need to put a quick policy backup ... and cold
backup it's what I use and it works.And reduces the availability of your cluster.
The problem about RMAN is that we never use it. I
have to learn about it to make scripts to test....
and this will tack me 2 or 3 days...I'd assume that installing RAC didn't go overnight, so why underfund the crucial part of any database system, the backup?
There's even a step by step guide for backup on the Getting Started: DBAs page.
Samples (and changes) on the latest version of RMAN can be found for example in RMAN Enhancements.
Or take a look at this Oracle Magazine article:Faster Backup, Faster Recovery
Backup and Recovery Basics in the user documentation may also be a good starting point.

File Adapter vs BPEL interaction issue on high availability environment
Hi all,
i would really appreciate your help on a matter i'm facing about a composite (SCA) deployed on a clustered environment configured for high availability. To help you better understand the issue i briefly describe what my composite does. Composite's instances are started by means of an Inbound File Adapter which periodically polls a directory in order to check if any file with a well defined naming convention is available. The adapter is not meant to read the file content but only its properties. Furthermore, the adapter automatically makes a backup copy of the file and doesn't delete the file. Properties read by the adapter are provided to a BPEL process which obtains them using the various "jca.file.xyz" properties (configurable in any BPEL receive activity) and stores them in some of its process variables. How the BPEL process uses these properties is irrilevant to the issue i'd like to pose to your attention.
The just described interaction between the File Adapter and the BPEL process has always worked in other non-HA environments. The problem i'm facing is that this interaction stops to work when i deploy the composite in a clustered environment configured for high availability: the File Adapter succeeds to read the file but no BPEL process instance gets started and the composite instance gets stuck (that is, it keeps always running until you don't manually abort it!).
Interesting to say, if I put a Mediator between the File Adapter and the BPEL, the Mediator instance gets started, that is the file's properties read by the adapter are passed to the mediator, but then the composite gets stuck again 'cos even the mediator doesn't seem to be able to initiate the BPEL process instance.
I think the problem lies in the way i configured either the SOA infrastructure for HA or the File Adapter or BPEL process in my composite. To configure the adapter, i followed the instructions given here:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E14571_01/integration.1111/e10231/adptr_file.htm#BABCBIAH
but maybe i missed something. Instead, i didn't find anything about BPEL configuration for HA with SOA Suite 11g (all the material i found refers to SOA Suite 10g).
I've also read in some posts that for using the db as a coordinator between the file adapters deployed on the different nodes of the cluster, the db must be a RAC! Is that true or is possible to use even another type of oracle db?
Please, let me know if someone of you has already encountered (and solved :)) a problem like this!
Thanks in advance,
Bye!Hi,
thanks for your prompt reply. Anyway, i had already read through out that documentation and tried all settings suggested in it without any luck! I'm thinking the problem could be related to the Oracle DB used in the clustered environment, which is not RAC while all documentation i read about high availability configuration always refers to a RAC db. Anyone knows if a RAC Oracle DB is strictly needed for file adapter configuration in HA cluster?
Thanks, bye!

Transaction Log Truncate not working on Sql Server 2012 High Availability Groups
Hi Everyone
Firstly I have tried to search the forum for similar issues but can't seem to find any that match our situation.
We have a SQL Server 2012 High Availability Group with 2 Nodes
Node 1 = Primary
Node 2 = Secondary
Backup Schedule as follows
Full Database Backup @ 00:00
Transaction Log Backup every 30 minutes from 00:30:00 till 23:59:59.
These backups are run by Maintenance Jobs, but we have also tried doing direct backups in SSMS using Backup Database and Backup Log commands.
Before we configured the High Availability group the transaction log backups worked fine.
After we configured the High Availability group we performed a Full Backup and the T-Log schedule did the T-Log backup. The 1st T-log backup truncated the log (Used space Decreased) as expected.
However subsequent T-Log backups do not truncate the T-Log.
This happens both in our acceptance and Live environments. This also happens when running the backups as a Backup operator and sysadmin, this does not seem to be a permissions issue at all.
We have tried running the Backup on the Primary and Secondary Replica.
What about High Availability groups could stop Transaction Log Backups from not truncating the log?
Thanks
JamesHi Sean

High availability error on presence
Good Day,
I have problem with HA on cisco presence cluster , the error is showing that Node status for the high avaliability is (Running in Backup Mode) and Node Reason (Peer Down During Initialization).
I have restart Sip proxy service as request from document but it's the same Any Help ASAP please
please see the attached
Regards
AymanHello
It seems that the checkbox "Enable High Availability" just above your screenshot is not checked.
See status message and solutions with this link.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cups/8_6/english/install_upgrade/deployment/guide/dgcupc.html
You can try
- Utils system restart of CUPS Publisher
- Wait 10 minutes
- Utils system restart of CUPS Subscriber
Then when both servers are up
- Uncheck HA and Save
- Check HA and Save
- Click on Rebalance users if load sharing is needed

Shrink Log File on High Availability
Dear support
good day for you,
i using SQL server 2012 and using AlwaysON High Availability (server_SQL1 = Primary & Server_SQL2=Secondary), when i try to shrink the log files he told me you must alter the database to simple recovery mode first but i cant coz using AlwaysON !
thats mean:
remove the DB's from AlwaysON (Server_SQL1)
Shrink Files
remove DB's from Server_SQL2
add again DB's to AlwaysON
any other solution for shrink logs without add/remove DB from AlwaysON
Regards,The link that Uri has is correct, but let me expand on it for anyone else that runs across this issue:
You don't actually need to be in the simple recovery model to shrink a file or the log. The reason why some people make the switch is because changing to the simple recovery model lets the database automatically clear the logs. This *generally* puts the
VLF in use at the very beginning of the log. Since shrinking a log file works differently from data files (log only works from the end of the log until the first used vlf) it allows for a fast shrink and grow operation to fix up the log.
In the full recovery model it is still possible, the difference being that you'll need to check to see which VLF the database is currently using and you may have to manually cause the log to circle around (by log backups, etc) to get a good shrink so
that you can grow at a proper size.

Problem with restoring a database from cold backup
All,
I've got a 10.2.0.4 database that we perform a cold backup on every night with RMAN. On Sunday 2/21, we have level 0 backup. On Monday-Wednesday nights, we take a cold level 1. We also perform a controlfile auto backup each night.
On a second server where I want to restore the database (same version of Oracle 10.2.0.4), I've copied the control file auto backups, the level 0 and the most recent level 1. I now want to restore. I use an RMAN script similar to the following to restore the control files:
connect target /;
set dbid 1973354860;
# Restore the controlfile from the tag that auto backed up the controlfile at the end of the level 0
run
startup nomount;
allocate channel c1 type disk;
restore controlfile to '/u01/app/oracle/oradata/ORADB1/control01.ctl' from AUTOBACKUP;
restore controlfile to '/u02/app/oracle/oradata/ORADB1/control02.ctl' from AUTOBACKUP;
restore controlfile to '/u03/app/oracle/oradata/ORADB1/control03.ctl' from AUTOBACKUP;
release channel c1;
shutdown immediate;
After the control files restore successfully, I perform some RMAN checks to ensure that all of the files I need for a recovery are there. The RMAN> list backup of database; command shows all of my backup savesets as AVAILABLE for the level0 and level1 backups.
I then try a restore database command; and get the following errors:
RMAN> run
2> {
3> allocate channel c1 type disk;
4> allocate channel c2 type disk;
5> allocate channel c3 type disk;
6> allocate channel c4 type disk;
7> restore database from tag='TAG20100221T200045';
8> }

So I'm unclear as to why RMAN believes the backups of these files don't exist when I attempt to restore the database. Anyone have a clue?
