Cold backup Vs Export Full

Hi all,
I'm a beginner DBA and I'd like to change my company's backup strategy, which appears to be messy and insufficient...
First of all RMAN is not used yet, but I'll work on it in the next months.
Besides I have a few questions :
- does it make any sense to shutdown/restart a db before making a full export (with consistent=Y), if we consider there is no activity (of almost nothing) on this db at night ?
- I realized that some db are both dumped and saved with cold backups (stop/copy/restart). Is it interesting to make both a full export and a cold backup ? Can a cold backup be useful when a full export is created ? Are those 2 techniques complementary ?
Thank you for help and explanations !
best regards,
Antoine

Hi,
I believe the database is shutdown and started for an export is to avoid a snapshot too old error which could araise when you have consistant=y.Still I do not believe it should be done.
Ok your second oint I would say is complimentary , because even you have a full export when the whole DB crashes.It would be much faster to restore from a cold backup than to create a new DB and import the data.

    ==================================
    콜드 백업은 데이타베이스가 정상적으로 SHUTDOWN 된 상태에서 데이타 화일,
    로그 화일, 콘트롤 화일을 모두 백업받는 것을 말한다. SHUTDOWN 하지 않고
    OPEN 된 상태에서 백업을 받으면 백업받은 내용을 나중에 사용할 수가 없으므로
    유의해야 한다.
    콜드 백업을 위해서 데이타베이스를 SHUTDOWN 할 때에는 NORMAL, IMMEDIATE
    옵션을 사용해야 하며 ABORT 를 사용해서는 안 된다. ABORT 를 사용한
    경우에는 SHUTDOWN 후에 다시 STARTUP 하고 NORMAL 로 SHUTDOWN 하도록 한다.
    콘트롤 화일과 데이타 화일 및 로그 화일의 위치를 확인하여 이들을 tar,
    cpio, dd 등의 명령을 이용하여 백업 받도록 한다. NT 에서는 COPY 명령이나
    탐색기를 이용해서 백업을 받으면 된다.
    콘트롤 화일 확인 방법
    sqlplus에 system/manager로 접속해서
    SQL>select value from v$controlfile;

    SQL>select name from v$datafile;
    로그 화일 확인 방법
    SQL>select member from v$logfile;
    위에서 확인된 3 종류의 화일들을 백업받으면 된다.
    (오라클은 반드시 SHUTDOWN된 상태이어야 함)
    필요에 따라서는 파라미터 화일까지 받아두는 것이 좋다.
    파라미터 화일은 $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<SID>.ora 이다.
    (NT 에서는 C:\ORANT\DATABASE\init<SID>.ora 화일이다.
    보통은 initORCL.ora 라고 되어 있다.)
    여기서 <SID>는 오라클 인스턴스 이름으로 환경변수 ORACLE_SID 로 지정이 되어
    있다.(NT 에서는 REGISTRY에 지정됨)

    So that at the time of recovery when i restore the database the online redologs also restored to that point?

    Am I Correct if not please any one answer me why the online redologs are not copied.No. They are not needed because the only valid backup for a cold (or noarchivelog mode database) backup is a consistent backup. Since the backup is already consistent there are no changes to apply.
    The online redo logs are (re)created/reset by the "resetlogs" clause when the database is opened.

  • Cold Backup/Recovering A Table

    I am running 11r2 in a RAC environment. We have a primary plus two standby's (using Active Data Guard). Also, I am a new DBA, so bare with me. :)
    TableX in a certain database is corrupted. The corruption began a month ago due to a web developer's code change. The code change was fixed a week ago.
    Summary: the data in TableX is corrupted up until a week ago.
    Flashback doesn't extend that far into the past, so what I've been thinking of doing is, on our test server:
    1) Copy over relevant files from production to the test server
    2) Backup the original TableX on production
    3) Restore the system, sysaux, undo and the tablespace which contains TableX on test server
    4) Drop all other tablespaces in mount state (or not, if this step isn't necessary?)
    5) Recover the database till the time when the table was dropped or updated
    6) Take an export of TableX from database and import it into production, overwriting the current TableX
    7) Update the imported production TableX with the past week of "good" data from the backup in step 2
    I have 3 questions.
    Does this seem like a good strategy?
    Additionally, I am having difficulty determining what the "relevant files" are in step 1. What would I be copying over? Everything in the ArchiveLog folder? Or Everything in the db_recovery_file_dest folder? Or...?
    Lastly, in step 3, is there a way to perform the restore w/o overwriting preexisting data on the test server?
    Thank you

    Hemant K Chitale wrote:
    is there a way to perform the restore w/o overwriting preexisting data on the test serverYou would have to restore to a different folder and when you ALTER DATABASE MOUNT you ALTER DATABASE RENAME DATAFILE to specify the new locations of the datafiles.
    I think the MOUNT is the step that I was missing, though it seems so obvious now...
    1) Copy over relevant files from production to the test server
    2) Backup the original TableX on production
    *2.5) MOUNT the copied data files onto the test server*
    3) Restore the system, sysaux, undo and the tablespace which contains TableX on test server
    4) Drop all other tablespaces in mount state (or not, if this step isn't necessary?)
    5) Recover the database till the time when the table was dropped or updated
    6) Take an export of TableX from database and import it into production, overwriting the current TableX
    7) Update the imported production TableX with the past week of "good" data from the backup in step 2
    Last Question (I think): you both refer to "THE cold backup." We use a diff backup. I assume you mean "copy over all files since the last full backup prior to the date that data corruption began"?

  • How to do media recovery from cold backup?????????/

    Hi
    i take cold backup of my 9i database ....
    in case my database is up .....
    how will i recover my database if i lose a single database file and i want to recover it from cold backup......
    Thanks in advance
    Gagan

    Here you go
    These are the steps:
    1. Restore the lost file from a backup.
    2. If the database is down, mount it.
         SVRMGR> STARTUP MOUNT PFILE=<location_of_pfile>;
    3. Issue the following query:
    SVRMGR> SELECT V1.GROUP#, MEMBER, SEQUENCE#,
    FIRST_CHANGE#
    FROM V$LOG V1, V$LOGFILE V2
    WHERE V1.GROUP# = V2.GROUP# ;
    This will list all your online redolog files and their respective
    sequence and first change numbers.
    4. If the database is in NOARCHIVELOG mode, issue the query:
         SVRMGR> SELECT FILE#, CHANGE# FROM V$RECOVER_FILE;
    If the CHANGE# is GREATER than the minimum FIRST_CHANGE# of your logs,
    the datafile can be recovered. Just keep in mind that all the logs to
    applied will be online logs, and move on to step 5.
    If the CHANGE# is LESS than the minimum FIRST_CHANGE# of your logs, the
    file cannot be recovered. Your options at this point would be to restore
    the most recent full backup (and thus lose all changes to the database
    since) or recreate the tablespace as explained in scenario a.
    5. Recover the datafile:
    SVRMGR> RECOVER DATAFILE '<full_path_file_name>'
    6. Confirm each of the logs that you are prompted for until you receive the
    message "Media recovery complete". If you are prompted for a non-existing
    archived log, Oracle probably needs one or more of the online logs to
    proceed with the recovery. Compare the sequence number referenced in the
    ORA-280 message with the sequence numbers of your online logs. Then enter
    the full path name of one of the members of the redo group whose sequence
    number matches the one you are being asked for. Keep entering online logs
    as requested until you receive the message "Media recovery complete"
    7. If the database is at mount point, open it.

  • How to restore cold backup + archived log files

    Hi,
    Suppose I take a cold backup on 18th. After that I have four days of archived log files. if the database crashes on 5th day, I have to restore the 18th cold back + 4 days of archived log files. How do I restore since it is a cold backup and I cant do incomplete recovery.
    can I use
    Recover database ( with 18th cold backup) in mount state and apply archived logs.
    Prabhath

    The details of how you perform forward recovery using a cold backup depends on
    1- rman or manual backup
    2- using current or backup control file
    3- if rman, recovery catalog or no recovery catalog
    4- if full database recovered or only a few files
    Each of these conditions will affect what is known to Oracle and what needs to be done. For example if you restored the entire cold backup including the control file then Oracle would see a consistent database and not need to perform recovery so you would need to startup mount and tell the database to perform recovery using a backup control file. If using rman and no recovery catalog you might need to catalog some of the archived redo logs, etc....
    It is advisable to consult the Backup and Recovery manuals before attempting recovery for any new scenario.

  • Create a standby controlfile using cold backup

    Hi All,
    We have to setup a DR for a production database.
    Here we have the coldbackup which backups all the datafiles and the control file from the production database.
    For cloining we generally copy them to another instance and then create controlfile manually. But for setting up as a DR , we would be creating it for standby controlfile.
    I tried to google but I am not able to find a way to create a standby controlfile from the existing controlfile cold backup.
    OS version solaris 10 , database version 11.2.0.1

    I need to put a quick policy backup ... and cold
    backup it's what I use and it works.And reduces the availability of your cluster.
    The problem about RMAN is that we never use it. I
    have to learn about it to make scripts to test....
    and this will tack me 2 or 3 days...I'd assume that installing RAC didn't go overnight, so why underfund the crucial part of any database system, the backup?
    There's even a step by step guide for backup on the Getting Started: DBAs page.
    Samples (and changes) on the latest version of RMAN can be found for example in RMAN Enhancements.
    Or take a look at this Oracle Magazine article:Faster Backup, Faster Recovery
    Backup and Recovery Basics in the user documentation may also be a good starting point.

  • Oracle R12 12.1.3, how to make cold backup

    Hello guys
    After a month long efforts, I was able to deploy the 12.1.3 templates successfully and the full vision instance is accessible without any technical hickups. I have setup VM Server 3.1.1 and VM Manager 3.1.1 using Oracle VirtualBox. The application is running on a two node structure now and I would like to take cold backups for both apps and database tier, later merge them to a single node and move to Oracle Linux 6.2/6.3 so that I could take it around in my laptop for demonstration purposes (We are on 12.0.4) right now and dwelling the possibilities of migrating to 12.1.3)
    regards,
    raj

    I already have two node application R12 (12.1.3) structure, now what I want is
    I want to take a cold backup of application tier, and database tier.
    Then move the backup to a new server and setup a single node, which will be on Oracle Enterprise Linux 6.2
    So, basically I want to know how to take a cold backup and then setup a new server with the backup.You can use any of the commands mentioned in this link -- http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/misc/os-backup-commands.php
    You might also use rcp/scp.
    http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blcmdl1_rcp.htm
    http://www.linuxtutorialblog.com/post/ssh-and-scp-howto-tips-tricks
    Please note for cold backup you will need to shutdown the application/database properly (clean shutdown).
    Thanks,

  • Restore from cold backup (rac server)

    Hi All,
    Oracle version : 10g
    OS : SunOS dixie1 5.10 Generic_118855-36 i86pc i386 i86pc
    I am having cold backup of RAC server (2 nodes), I want to restore from cold backup.
    The problem is that : when i performed the cold backup using rman at that time Oracle was having 3 ASM diskgroups.But unforunately that disk is no more in use due to some fault.
    Now my question is how can i restore from the cold backup as when i'll restore from the cold backup this will ask for the same ASM diskgroups.Even more if i creates the same diskgroup with the same name and same configuration then my doubt is that rman will allow me to restore the same from the cold backup as ASM disk header changed now ?
    Thanks,

    Yes.You can do these and restore/recover your database.First you need startup your ASM instance then create your ASM disk groups and do following:
    1.Edit pfile and change controlfile location to diskgroup(Consder that +dgr1)
    2.Restore controlfile to this disk group using backup of controlfiles(you say that is cold backup)
    rman target /
    /*Instance  need starting up from pfile*/
    startup nomount ;
    /*then restore controlfile,give full path of controlfile from coldbackup*/

  • RMAN not opening database after cold backup

    OS: RHES4
    10g R2
    I am having a problem using RMAN to run a cold backup. The error from the log tell me that the database is already open. However when I check the database, the status is that it is in MOUNT. I can then open it but am not sure why RMAN cannot. The log is below:

    Do you have an OMS configured for OEM? You'll need to connect to an OMS to perform backups thru OEM. The process is explained here Managing Backup and Recovery.
    Here is a SAMPLE configuration script:
    configure device type disk parallelism 1;
    configure channel device type disk format 'd:\oracle_backup\%d_%U.%p';
    configure controlfile autobackup on;
    configure controlfile autobackup format for device type disk to 'd:\oracle_backup\cf_auto_%F.bkp';
    configure retention policy to recovery window of 2 days;
    configure backup optimization on;and a SAMPLE backup script:
    rem
    rem  rman_backup.cmd
    rem
    rem  Full database backup plus archivelogs.
    for /f "tokens=2-4" %%i in ('echo %date:/= %') do set vdate=%%i_%%j_%%k
    echo backup database plus archivelog;
    echo sql "alter database backup controlfile to trace as ''d:\oracle_backup\controlORCL9%vdate%.txt''";
    echo sql "create pfile=''d:\oracle_backup\initORCL9%vdate%.ora'' from spfile";
    echo crosscheck backup;
    echo crosscheck archivelog all;
    echo delete noprompt obsolete recovery window of 2 days;
    echo delete noprompt archivelog all completed before 'sysdate-7';
    ) | rman target / log=backup.logYou could scheduled the rman_backup.cmd script to run every night at 10pm thru the Windows task scheduler.

  • ARCHIVELOG mode needless for offline (cold) backups ?

    When I read some tutorials or comments about backup with rman or expdb I saw often the recommendation to put database in ARCHIVELOG mode.
    But this is from my point of view useless when I do such a backups in offline mode.
    I want to backup the current state of the database - full stop.
    Redo logs from ARCHIVELOG are not necessary. Only if I want to go further back from the current state back to the past they are of use.
    Am I right?
    Peter

    Data pump does not require or use archivelog mode for importing, or exporting.
    The archivelog mode is required, however, for RMAN backups, except for full database copy which it copies while the database is shutdown.
    The Data Pump utility uses a parameter called FLASHBACK_SCN (and FLASHBACK_TIME) which reads the undo data, but not to be confused with archivelogs.
    NOTE that if you set archivelog mode on, you may want to either turn off archivelog mode when importing, or set the tabelspaces to nologging (then back to logging when done). Otherwise, it may cause enough archive logs during import to fill up your file system.

  • Recover datafile using cold backup in archivelog mode

    Hi,
    I have lost one of my datafiles i.e New.dbf from the disk. I have full database cold backup of last sunday. Also I have the archives. Is it possible to restore and recover only the lost datafile? Please help.

    If you used RMAN to create the backup, then use RMAN again to restore that one datafile alone (RESTORE DATAFILE n) and then recover it (RECOVER DATAFILE n).
    If you didn't use RMAN but you are sure that the backup was a COLD Backup, manually restore the datafile and then issue a RECOVER DATAFILE n from the SQLPlus command.
    In either case you must ensure that the datafile is OFFLINE before you restore the file -- or take it OFFLINE with ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE n OFFLINE IMMEDIATE before doing the restore.
    After the RECOVER is completed, you must bring it ONLINE with an ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE n ONLINE
