Collapse all Folders in Finder

Is there a way to collapse /all/ folders in Finder instead of hunting them down and closing all of them one by one?
Thanks.

I really still do not understand this question. Presumably you are not referring to List View (which is what I associate with collapse/expand). Icon View will open/close folders; List View will expand/collapse directory trees; Column View will scroll through path hierarchies; which one are you trying to do?
Do you mean you want to open multiple folders while in Icon View? If so, select the folders you want and hit ⌘+↓. All of them will open as long as they are all from the same Finder window. Afterwards, for you to close all Finder windows except one, you'd need to use one of the two AppleScripts I linked earlier.
Maybe you are asking for a method to double-click one folder and have it and all its subfolders open up in their own Finder windows (essentially, you want to open all nested folders with one click)? I think you'd need to build an AppleScript for that. The OS will not have such a function built in because the depth of some directory trees could easily freeze a computer.
i have a ton of documents and it is really inconvenient to have to open /all/ the folder to find things.
If you assigned non-generic names to your folders and documents, you should be able to use Spotlight and Smart Folders to get to your files. For example, since I name my project files with the format DateProject_DocumentVersion, it's easy for me to create a Smart Folder that shows me all finalized/approved parts lists from a project I did two years ago, regardless of where they're located in my archives. It's even easier if you also use Spotlight Comments and/or color labels.
then when i get them open it is a total pita going and collapsing all of them. i guess i can close out of the finder window altogether but i'd like to stay in the same window and keep working.
Did you try either one of the two AppleScripts I linked earlier? They allow you to close all Finder windows except the active one. Finder doesn't have a built-in, default option to close all windows except the active one.
btw, i'd also like to do the equivalent for windows on the desktop so i can get to the desktop quickly. right now I have to move them over or minimize them one by one...
i guess getting familiar with expose or witch may do this?
Exposé can temporarily displace (not hide) all windows to show just the Desktop. ⌥⌘H will hide all other applications except the active one (or if you wish to specify which particular application stays unhidden, ⌥⌘+click the app's icon on the Dock). To actually hide (not close) all visible windows, you'll need to run an AppleScript ➚.
also can i ask you if there is a way for me to post a video of screenshots to this site? i have an issue that would be helped by doing this...
You'd need to upload to a video host, like YouTube, and then paste the link over here.

  • How to collapse all folders in list view

If you search on this topic, there are many discussions about it without a real solution.  The challenge is the following: you have a list view of many folders, some of which are expanded, and some are not ( to expand/collapse a folder you click on the little triangle by the name of the folder ).  Lilke many users on the apple discussions I wanted to collapse all of them with one action instead of clicking on each folder individually.
I found a solution on superuser.com:  first, in the list view, select all with command-A, and then press Command-(left arrow).  To expand all, do Command-A followed by Command-(right arrow).
I hope that helps, and my apologies if this solution has been given before, but I didn't find it with my 5 minute search.

Thank you very much! Exactly the solution I was searching for. Aloha!

I am working with EP6sp14, especially to run the External Facing Portal.
Thanks helping me and my customer..

    Hi Leurs
Ur req is very much possible
What u need 2 do is make ur
    1)toplevel navigation level to 0
2)detailed level navigation display level property to 1.
    I will explain each step
    1) I. Configure Top-Level Navigation
1.In the Portal Catalog choose <b>Portal Users-> Standard Portal Users.</b> This folder contains the <b>Default Framework Page</b>.
       2.Right-click <b>Default Framework Page</b> and choose <b>Open->Object</b>.
3.From the Page Content List select the <b>Top-Level Navigation iView</b> and click <b>Properties</b>.
4.Scroll to the <b>Number of Display Levels</b>property and enter the value 0, 1, or 2, depending on how many navigation levels, if any, you want for top-level navigation.
<u><b><i>Choosing 0 removes your top-level navigation and displays your navigation structure in the Detailed Navigation iView.</i></b></u>
       5.Click Save.
    2 Configure Detailed Navigation
1.From the Page Content List of the <b>Default Framework Page</b>, select <b>Desktop Innerpage</b> and click Open.
2.From the Page Content List of the <b>Desktop Innerpage</b> select the <b>Detailed Navigation iView</b> and click <b>Properties.</b>
3.Scroll to the <b>Start at Level property</b> and assign a value that is one higher than the value of the <b>Number of Display Levels</b> property in procedure l. Configure Top-Level Navigation. For example, if top-level navigation is configured for one level, the detailed navigation begins on the second level, that is with the value 2.
      4.Click Save.
<u><i><b>Detailed navigation is not automatically synchronized with top-level navigation; the values you enter for top-level and detailed navigation must agree. For example, if you enter the value 1 for top-level navigation, while detailed navigation still has the value 3, one level is left out, creating a gap.</b></i></u>
    III. Configure the Content Area
1.From the Page Content List of the <b>Desktop Innerpage</b>, select the <b>Content Area</b> iView and click <b>Properties.</b>
2.Scroll to the <b>Number of Display Levels in TLN</b> property and enter the same value as that of the <b>Number of Display Levels</b> property in procedure I. Configure Top-Level Navigation.
       3.Click Save.
These steps will make ur Portal the way u want, i guess.
    Regards

  • How do I collapse all uncollapsed folders

I have an issue that I have tried to tackle a couple of times as I learn to optimize my mac. Advance apologies to anyone that has helped in the past but I can't seem to get this to work.
I would like to be able to collapse all folders throughout a Finder window. By which I mean to say I wish to select a folder and uncollapse all the contents and then do this to a number - say twenty - of other folders and all their subfolder contents.
Right now I have to collapse each folder individually - which means I have to do this twenty times to get back to a fully collapsed state.
I seem to have tried CMD, OPTION, CTRL, SHIFT and a number of other keyboard commands while collapsing one of the folders but it only seems to collapse the one folder.
It doesn't seem like proper form to have to either run around and close each folder individually or alternately to close out of the Window completely and have to then find where you were at to open a new Finder window with all contents collapsed....
    Thanks for any help.

Hi. Many thanks. I think this is where things broke down last time I tried to get this to happen and I got sidetracked with other issues.
While holding down the option key, press the right arrow button.
    this expands all the folders.
    I get this behavior.
The when you're ready to close those folders. Hold down the option key and press the left arrow.
    I don't get this behavior...
Anyone have any ideas? It is actually much more important for me to get the second behavior explained here than it is to get the first.
    Thanks Chop....

  • How can I set a customized view in finder set as standard for ALL folders?

As I have a large number of folders, I need a specific view in finder: symbol view, sort by program and name. I tried to use this settings as standard for ALL folders, but using the 'set as standard' button does only work for the folder I am in, but not for ALL folders. I even tried to use this settings on the hard disk level in finder, but what ever I tried, it never applies to all folders. The problem occurs on each of my devices and on Yosemite OS 10.10.1. as well as Mavericks 10.9.5. Any ideas on how I can make the 'standard' work on all folders?

As Vinod says, unique key validator would be fine.
    However, In Gabriel's blog:
Performing a unique key validation for an attribute that is declared to be unique in the database requires a round trip to the database. This is quite expensive and there is a fast and easy way to work around it.Is false on several fronts:
1). it's not expensive - it's actually cheaper than the alternative
2). Unique key validator can require many trips to the DB to validate - it must check all other rows in the EO to ensure there is no duplicate, and all of those rows must be fetched into the middle tier to do the validation: this is expensive.
The "cheapest" way to do this: unique constraint in the DB

  • How do I find the files in all folders named Camera 1?

Is there a way to search and find all of the video files in a certaint folder name? For example: I have many folders in different directories labled as Camera 1. I would like to be able to search for the files in all folders named Camera 1, but exclude any similar file types that might exist in other folders such as Camera 2, Camera 3, etc... Is there any way to do this?

You should be able to sort by file name, file size, or last modified date by clicking the column heading. If the column headings are gone or you do not have all those details, there might be a way to reset your FireFTP settings but I've never researched it.

  • AFP Finder Bug Report/Collapse AFP Folders over the Command Line

    Hello,
I have a MacPro server that I am using to deliver scanned images of business recoreds.  I absolutely love how cover flow and spotlight work toghether and in fact this is one of the main reasons I chose Apple in 2009.
However, the number of records has grown quite a lot.  Somehow today a user opened/expanded all of the folders and now every user is seeing all folders expanded.  Unforunately it has become impossible to get a directory listing because there are over a million pages opening previews.  This has caused my business to come to a grinding halt!
So my suggestion to Apple is that this is a bug!  This is just like Lion that remembers which windows and applications are open and what a mess that created for people who open a lot of windows and so many users looked to create a workaround to prevent this either for specific applicaitons or to disable it all together.  Fortunately in Lion updates and ML it is possible to disable this feature.  This needs to be changed because because when a computer defaults to opening windows and resources not requested by the user(s) it bogs down the entire system and degrades the user's experience on the application they are actually working on.  Who in their right mind would want Safari to open up Drudge Report, CNN, Yahoo, every dirty movie I've ever watched and 50 pages of LOL Cats if I just want to check the weather or try and find a good resteraunt to take my wife to dinner.  Opening windows or folders by default is not an elegant use of our computer resources, is not minimalist design, and is not helpful in any way whatsoever.  These features create nothing but dust and clutter and users should demand these so called features be turned off by default.
And my question for the super users:  HOW CAN I FIX THIS?  There must be a plist file I can delete and recreate or at least edit?  A permissions change to prevent this from happening again?  Sudo something?
    Thanks,
    Jake
p.s.  A new MacPro with thunderbolt would be nice.

Thank you.  Yes it is a read only directory so I am flummoxed as to how .dsstore was modified?  I have tested multiple times to be sure users cannot accidentally delete or modify an archived file. tomorrow I will look to see how ds store was modified.
Users upload files into a drop box and they are inserted with rsync to prevent overwrites.   Several pitfalls to using finder for this purpose most notably the tendency to overwrite completely a folder so files may get deleted.   These are important records so early on I set it up so once a file was inserted it could not be removed without logging in as a specific management user.
But the user interface is so awesome to view the files I just can't imagine a competitive product being so nice as to scroll through the pages in cover flow like you are flipping through a file.  Most of the time I can scan the files' contents without even oppening preview or even hitting the space bar. Cover flow gives me the intuitive feel of paper I like.
If you have a product to suggest I would look at it.

  • Finder disappeared, all folders on desktop disappeared

I have had problems with turning my iMac off. Now all folders on the desktop disappeared, and Finder tells me that it can' t open.

  • Can I set all folders to the same column with in Finder list view?

I set Finder to display 4 columns in list view: Name, Date Modified, Size, Kind. Is there a way to apply the width of those columns to all folders? Column width is not affected by the option "use as defaults" in the view options.

  • How to Find all folders on hard drive by size

I'm trying to clean up my internal hard drive (232gb). I've been opening up misc folders and getting size info. Still missing about 60 Gig. I seem to remember, back in the day, there was a way to get a list of all folders on a drive listed in order of file size. Is this a possibility?
Also speaking of back in the day, why don't I need to optimize my Hard Drive and is fixing permissions the same thing.
    Sorry for the two topics

I recommend [WhatSize|http://www.whatsizemac.com/index.php] ($12.99 US) for the following features:
It's the only one I know of with an option to show everything at once; the others only show things the logged-on user is permitted to see (click the +As User+ padlock icon in the toolbar).
You can use any of 4 different display formats (3 text and a pie chart).
    There's a "Find Duplicates" feature.
It has very good and complete Help.

  • Collapse multiple folders

    Hi everyone!
I was wondering if anyone knows how to collapse multiple folders in the Files panel. Whenever I do a template update, it expands every folder containing a page that uses the template. So when you have 50-100 folders or so with several pages and/or subfolders inside each one, it makes it real pain to find a page or folder when every folder is expanded. And it's a real hassle to collapse each one separately, so I was just wondering if there's a way (or an extension) to collapse all the folders at once so I don't have to do each one at a time.
Alternatively, if there's a way to not expand every folder containing a page that uses a template when that template is updated, that would work, too.
    Thanks!

Just in case anyone else has this issue, I figured out that you can hold Ctrl while clicking the collapse thingy and all the open folders in that folder will also close.

  • Is all folders expandable fucntionality in DLN possible for EP7.0 SP6??

    Hi All,
As specified in the below thread we have modified the com.sap.portal.navigation.lightdetailednavigationtree.par as mentioned in the below changes but still the fucntionality of expanding all folders in DLN by default on click of role is not working, still all folders in the Detailed Navigation(DLN) in collapsed mode.
Is it possible to enable this functionality in EP 7.0 SP6 version, which is our current portal version?? or else would we need to have at least SP13 version to achieve this functionality??
Could you please let us know what are other changes required in portal other than below PAR file changes to achieve the functionality??
Any pointers on this issue would be great help to us.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Tobias,
    Thanks for your reply.
Could you please let me know what are the changes woule be required to be done in the PAR file of com.sap.portal.navigation.detailedtree, where i couldn't see any JSP file to modify. actually our requirement is we need to expand all the folders by default which are displayed in the detailed Navigation. currently as of now all the folders are in collapsed mode, user has to expand the folders manually in DLN.
I have already download the PAR file specified by you and als imported into NWDS, now could you please help what are the changes would require in code to achieve the functionality as mentioned above.
in the PAR file, currently i am able to see only the properties file and one Java Script(JS) file , not find out any JSP file in that PAR file. could you tell me where to do the changes in the JS file and Properties file of the PAR file.
    Thanks,
