Color correction novice back with a problem/question.

Hi,
I have been working on color correction for an edit of a live 2 camera shoot concert. Edits are almost all final. I dug into correcting color between the 2 cameras & after some practice got good results.
Tho, I noticed that corrections looked slightly different after rendering them, and again slightly different after exporting to full uncompressed quicktime video.
Saturation levels shifted (less), & some shots showed slightly different color balance. This is a unique shoot because the stage was fully lit in red light & red can be one of the most difficult colors in video (in my experience).
So I eventually started that vicious cycle of correcting not by eye but by anticipating what was needed to get a desired result after rendering & exporting... each time it was lengthy renders & exports before seeing the results.
So I had several versions of the project saved w/ different renderings, etc. All of this is stored on a 250 gig 2nd internal drive which I bought & installed just for editing. All files & edit lists etc were kept there.
So I'm trying to look at different versions after having to put the project aside for a couple of weeks, and every version I open shows me a list of render files that it says it can't find. I've just been choosing to re-render.
(I'm wondering if a routine session of running disk warrior on my drives could have contributed to this?? Thats the only thing I can think of, other than the OSX upgrade to 10.4.4, which also included a quicktime upgrade.)
I'm new at this so I'm trying to figure out if this disappearance of render files is normal? In one version I chose 'search computer for render files' or something to that effect & I watched it go thru my drives one after another & when it got to the 2nd internal drive (where all the render files should be), it spent about 1/10th the time that it spent searching other drives. It really jumped in & out of that drive really quickly.
Its not all the render files that are missing, I looked in the render folder & some have older dates, while a section of them are from tonite when I re-rendered. Then more with the older date.
Anybody have any advice?
Thanks for your help

  • Color Correction Novice rounding home stretch w/ a Q

    Hi,
So far, I've received some valuable advice & tips for my 1st attempts at color correction, esp since my production falls outside the normal applications. The help has been great!
I went thru my production and did scene by scene corrections, which lost most of its intimidation with enough practice. I still havent tackled the Keyframe approach to having corrections shift during the course of a scene - I'm hoping to escape without having to do that.
    Heres my question -
I did all the corrections, with a calibrated external monitor, and then had the program render all the video effects. Then I chose "print to video". When the program ran, the colors were a little different overall than what I had set in the program (less orange, more pink) and in a few scenes (orig underexposed, but corrected in the process), the color shifted more radically, esp in the shadow / black values which fell greenish.
I didnt see any of this as I was correcting, and the signal path was the same when I printed to dvd, same monitor w/ no calibration changes.
Is this normal? Maybe these shifts happen more discreetly in reg productions, mine is a live stage shoot with a lot of red light.
Thanks for all the help, & Happy New Year

    Hi,
Thanks for all the info, I'm starting to look at ways of sending what I have to people who need to see it. The project will likely still require some tweaking so this isnt a final mastering step by any means. Just looking for something that looks as good as what I see on the monitor after rendering.
Its looking like (from the lasts posts) that 'out thru firewire -> dvd recorder' isnt the best choice & if I can keep it in the computer & flow it directly to its burner, the opportunities for problems can be minimalized.
I tried exporting to quicktime, that resulted in an FCP Quicktime file that took 3 hrs to create & was almost 13 gig. (program is 50 min) so it looked great but was too huge to put onto a disk.
If anyone has guidance in this area, I'd appreciate it. I'm gonna poke around in those options & then likely post a further question seperately on this subject. I want to get it onto a dv disc via toast 6 (I see Quicktime w/ Compression is an option so I'm gonna explore that)
Thank you all again for the correction help, in that 13 gig version, it looked really great (no green in shadow artifacts ! )
    Regards,

  • Why is my rendered color corrected movie pixelated with jagged edges after rendering?

    Hello All,
I am new short film movie producer and have just started using Adobe Premiere CS6 and Audition CS6.  Comparing my flat footage before adding it to a sequence and color correcting it and rendering it, it looks fair.  But after all these transitions it now looks pixelated along with very jagged edges.  This is my first short film for my first client and I am at my witts ends!  I have tried to copy the sequence and transfer it to a new sequence with differnt settings comparing the pixel aspect ration, fps, trying to match the clips specs and I am so stuck. Can anyone please offer any suggestions or let me know if there are procedures I have overlooked.  Thanks Adobe Community.
    Michael Diaz

Let's back up a step - what camera do you use? If it's an HDV model, then yes you have anamorphic footage. Simply choose an HDV sequence preset to match. If your camera shoots 720p or full 1920x1080, those are square pixel (1.0) formats and are not anamorphic (anamorphic does NOT mean widescreen, it means "stretched to widescreen" basically).
In any case, drag a clip to the New Item button for best results until you get more educated and confident about the different formats you may be working with.
If you copied and pasted the contents of the SD sequence into an HD sequence, all filters and effects you had applied before should remain intact and not need reworking, except possible for titles and things involving scaling (since the size has changed).
As for exporting, you typically will NOT want an anamorphic export, except for widescreen DVD. You will not see anamorphic mentioned though, just choose "MPEG-2 DVD" and an appropriate widescreen preset and Adobe knows what to do from there. For web/computer viewing, best to avoid anamorphic footage, since many players assume 1.0 PAR and do not adjust the image for non-square pixels. So if working with 1440x1080 footage, and exporting to web or YouTube for instance, export as 1920x1080 (1.0) or 1280x720 (720p) so the viewer sees the proper 16:9 output, or the image may be squished otherwise!
    Thanks

  • Color correct CMYK Image with RGB Image

    1. anybody please tell me is it possible to perform color correction in CMYK image with RGB reference image
    2. how to do that i mean what are the details i have to watch for?
    ADVANCE THANKS

Your match using my color profile(similar to North American General Purpose) would be 29c 100m 83y 35k. Convert a sample swatch, using your color workflow/profile.
Some RGB colors won't convert well to cmyk (eg 0R 255B 0G). In that case your problem is not using a RGB reference image for CMYK color correction, but the cropped color gamut in the color conversion itself.
In those cases of saturated RGB colors you may have to do some handtoning to surrounding colors, to help create the illusion of RGB saturation to the troublesome color you are matching.

  • Back with a new question

Ok I am a guitar player and new at this computer stuff,
but my question is should I just plug my Alesis drum machine in as a instrument, or is there an easier way with the drums that are already built in to
garageband, so far all I can figure out is how to click the mouse on the piano to get what I would say poor drumming, now is there a way to click it on like my drum machine to play say rock drums or should I stick with my drum machine that seems to work fine?????

You can use the editor to edit drums the same as you would on a drum machine. I usually start with a simple green drum loop, call Straight Up Beat 01, which is very basic. And I use it as a sort of more inspired click track. After I get the basic song down on guitar and bass, I then go in and edit that loop to become my drum track. At first, I just loop it all the way across the song, but when the editing come, I drag it back to the single loop, and copy over and over, so I can add subtle differences and fills/accents where needed. If you know how to program your drum machine, you'll catch on to this quick.
If you really want to tap it out, google for the freeware MidiKeys (I think that's it) and you can then use your computer keyboard instead of the tiny piano and mouse.
If you ever want to add some keyboard stuff, consider getting a midi controller keyboard, such as the M_Audio Keystation 49e ($99), which makes all of this even easier, plus you can play keys with it, too.

  • Importing Color Corrected Master Back Into System for Trailer, DVDs, etc.

    Hi there,
Thanks to all of you who have been of great help to me as I've been working with Technicolor on the Mastering of a feature. I've never really had a feature leave my system before, or at least one that I stayed in control of, so this has all been very new and educational.
Okay, question (or, rather, a confirmation) for final steps - they are sending me the following next week, for me to keep or for import back into Premiere for trailer cutting, still pulling, festival DVD making, etc. I just want to make sure this list is sufficient.
    Physical Deliveries
    HDCAM Master Tape
    DVD-R
    Files on a Hard Drive
10-Bit Uncompressed Quicktime of Completed Film
Compressed 422 ProRes Quicktime of Completed Film
I guess my main question is - will the 422 suffice for a high quality trailer and DVDs? They also offered to make an even-more-compressed H264, but if I can inport the ProRes Quicktime, that doesn't seem necessary, does it?
    Thanks!
    Stephen Cone

    Yes.  All else being equal.

  • I,m back with same problem with a new twist

I contacted this forum about a month ago and didn,t get any useful advice and so my boot camp installation problem https://discussions.apple.com/message/19306599?ac_cid=op123456#19306599 is still unresolved. I have a new problem now ....I CANNOT GET PAST FILE REC LOCK ITEM WHEN BOOTING UP. I,ve tried a pram reset, safe boot. Booting from original osx snow leopard whilst holding 'c' button. I,ve given up hope of recovering my existing info and would be HAPPY if some wiseman out there could tell me how to do an erase reinstall. I have an IMAC mid 2011 2.7 ghz which I got end of dec 2011. I started on s leopard then lion and then mountain lion. I have file encryption set up with a file rec key I wrote down but it neither accepts it or declines....it just stays on the lock icon with grey background. P.S. If I boot up as normal I get to my login screen as normal. My usual username and password is accepted but it go,s to a grey screen from there and gets stuck and there are no error messages or sounds and nothing for me to click. The power button only works if I press and hold it. Just before this happened I verified and repaired disk permissions and spotlight was re-indexing for ages before it tanked mid process. IS THERE A ANOTHER FILE REC KEY I COULD GET VIA EMAIL RATHER THAN PHONE THE £35 SUPPORT PHONE NUMBER?
    Thankyou, peeps.

I installed iOS 6 on my iPad 2 yesterday as well as the above stuff if that helps.

  • Did Yosemite changed FCPx color correction in inspector?

prior to installing Yosemite I had the color correction functions as part of the clip  inspector in the video tab.   Now I notice after installing Yosemite that the color correction functions including color, saturation, and exposure are an effect that you must apply before manipulating those effects.   Is that possible that I can not put the color correction board back into my default functionality in the video tab of inspector?

thanks tom, i think it was easier the other way, but ok there is no way to customize the inspector with frequently used effects, maybe that would be my next question.

  • Color Correction for DVD and online

I have a 13" SD TV hooked up to my mac working as a color correction monitor for FCE.
My question is: Should I always color correct using the TV monitor vs looking at the Canvas in FCE? What I'm seeing is the picture in the canvas is darker and more saturated then the view of the TV monitor. Is it best to trust the TV monitor vs the canvas? And should it make any difference if the final project is going to DVD vs online? I'm assuming the ending product (mov file) should look the same if the mov file is viewed from a computer vs on a TV from a DVD. In a nut shell, once the clip is color corrected using the ext monitor, should I be good to go no matter where the file ends up?
    Thoughts?
    Thanks so much

    Hi
I would take some photos with color miss match eg blue tint (Blå-Stick in Swedish)
and with other known color anomalities.
Put them in TimeLine and playback. View TV - corrected or as bad as from start.
I use a color corrected CRT-broad-cast monitor but prior to this a small TV and
this one did a good job.

  • Copy and Paste Single Color Correction

I'm trying to copy and paste a single color correction to the rest of the clips in the timeline and run into a problem.  I've tried to disable the other color corrections before copying but all that does is paste the unchecked correction also.  I've tried deleting the other corrections before copying but that likewise deletes all the previous corrections in the clip that I paste to.  So in other words, no matter how I configure my color corrections in the clip that I copy from, the exact same configuration is what gets pasted into the paste clip.  Surely there is a way to copy a single color correction when dealing with clips with multiple corrections?  My protocol is to adjust contrast on one correction, color balance on another and now I want to add a tint to a number of clips with out having to write down the color parameters and individually make the adjustments in maybe 70 or 80 clips.  Thanks for any insights.  Oh yeah I'm using FCPX 10.1.1

You don't.  In the PRIMARY and SECONDARY rooms, you can save grades.  Park your playhead on a clip, hit SAVE. Those grades will show up no matter what project you open in Color.
What I do is make folders for every project, and save my shot grades in there.  I can then apply it to another project, if I have the need.  When working on a reality series, I often have the need.

  • FCP and negative film color correction?  Any experience?

    Hello There,
I'm running into more and more low budget filmmakers who are trying there hand at making short films in Super 8 movie film (yes, it's still around believe it or not). Kodak has two new film stocks out for Super 8 and one is 200T and the other is 500T (both cut down from their pro 16mm and 35mm pro stocks).
When these filmmakers get this stuff developed they don't have the money to have it transferred at a pro shop so they are using equipment made by a company in Texas that does a very good job at transferring the film, but it doesn't have the adjustments needed to make negative film look the way it should.
I know a few people who color correct it with FCP and FCE and they can actually make it look fairly good.
My question is: is there a plug in or other software that can be used that is meant to do this? Or does anyone have any experience on this site with color correcting negative film with FCP? If so, what filters do you use?
Any thoughts or comments would be great to hear from. Remember, I know this can be done by the big players, what I want to know can it be done with FCP and still look fairly good?
    Thanks for your help,
    Mike

Well, this is pretty easy. Just throw a CHANNEL>INVERT on the negative footage before you color correct. You might have to do that before you even begin editing, as that turns the negative image into a positive one. It isn't Real Time though, so you'll have to render all the time...every cut. Unless you add the filter an export a self contained QT Movie of each tape. But then you lose time code.
So why do they do this again? Cheaper...OK. Ease? Not really.

  • Crashing when color correcting C500 footage

Working with CC 2014 has been a lesson in patience from the beginning.
I am working on a $10,000 brand new Mac Pro and we get crash crash crash when trying to color correct C500 footage with Magic Bullet Looks.

As a whole, I find Premiere Pro Cc 2014 to be less than stable. Any time a stress is put on it, like a codec which requires some heavy lifting, it freaks out.  I never had these types of  problems in other edit systems, ever. We have to tread so lightly within this program as not to upset it. It is far from being used as a serious professional tool in my opinion, yet.

  • CRT settings for color correcting?

Hi. I am color correcting my showreel with FCP using an external CRT monitor. I am wondering about monitor settings regarding chroma, contrast, brightness etc. As a rule should all of these functions be set to 0 for best overall results? I am guessing there are additional variables to consider, but for standard TV viewing, is there a norm? Any input or discussion this may provoke is very welcome.
    Thanks in advance!

YOu have to properly calibrate the monitor to color bars. Every monitor will be different...

  • Color Correcting Multicam Clip

I have a two camera project.  I am color correcting the project.  I can see where doing the color work in the timeline would be very ineffective.  The Angle Editor would be a much more efficient way to go.  My problem is that once I open the Angle Editor I have each camera on line, one above the other, as I would expect.  I can color correct the upper one no problem.  When I select the lower camera clips they show in the viewer only while the cursor is over one.  As soon as I move the cursor to the color board the viewer switches to the upper camera clip.
What am I doing wrong here ?
I know I am going to fill really stupid once I find out the answer .

At the head of each lane in the angle editor is an icon that lets you select which clip appears in the viewer.
