Colour safe for broadcast help...

Hi all....
Right, not too sure about this one....
Having taught myself coulor corrections, luminance and Gammas etc.... I am now being carefull at my colour levels throughout my sequences, I am left with an issue.
My sequence is done and I am about to apply a broadcast safe filter throughout the sequence to keep my levels below 100% brightness.
But for broadcast I understand that I also need to keep my RGB values below 100%.
I understand that the way to check that those are below 100% is to check the vectorscope.
But that means going through everyframe of the sequence.
Broadcast safe doesn't seem to affect colour? or am I wrong?
Does it just modify the luminance?
Whats the best way to check the coulor levels?
Anyone?
THanks in advance
Steph

But that means going through everyframe of the sequence
yes it does ... welcome to our world
Broadcast safe doesn't seem to affect colour? or am I wrong?
Does it just modify the luminance?
the Broadcast Safe filter does indeed affect the color ... it is just far more forgiving, at its default setting, than perhaps you were expecting. if you try some of the other settings "ultra super duper conservative" etc you might see more appreciably that it is in fact working.
Whats the best way to check the coulor levels?
Use your scopes as you go through the sequence.
Plus, go to View menu > Range Check... > Excess Chroma - make sure it is checked - then scrub through your edit and see if you get any warning flags come up in the canvas.

  • Is fxLegalizeNTSC trustworthy to keep color safe for broadcast?

Cutting a promo for broadcast and I just want to make sure that fxLegalizeNTSC at the top of the stack will keep color in safe regions.

ON first establishing a relationship with a b-cast entity, get their specific requirements for codecs/standards/formats & etc and then do a SHORT sample of the kind of footage/subject you'll be shipping them. Send it to their QC types to load onto their system and make sure it meets their specs. Adjust as necessary from there. Some folks around here have complete editing production setups with separate vid cards for b-cast monitors all designed to be calibrated to spec. They pretty much know that what signal they put out WILL match any particular given need. They still always send a test to any new service they deliver to.
For the rest of us, running less-"enhanced" equipment, but still calibrated to consistency, such tests are also needed ...  and again, modify the outputs according to the feedback you get.
It's simply kind of scary to expect to send b-cast ready material to a network/service that you haven't worked with before ... it might fly, but if it doesn't, wow ... not good. I know my screen is calibrated for rec709, and most of what I do goes to dvd's for clients to have a personal items or to the web for short fun promo pieces. Neither is nearly as critical as delivering content for a network b-cast, but I still have tested on various types of tv's for the dvd's, and through various web players for the web-deliverable material. Though those two 'streams' of viewing have rather wide possible individual ... projection, what do we call it these days? ... still, I note the range of visual results and set a seemingly middle-course set of output criteria so the content looks at least decent over most equipment it will be viewed on. I've had a couple guys what deliver all their material for tv stations & networks ... who find their output needs vastly simpler than mine as they can just set their calibration and when it's on, it's on. I have to ... guesstimate ... at times.
But then most of my clients are NOT as critical of optical senses as you'll find in many professional b-cast centers.

  • When I double clicked the home button my screen changed to what looks almost like a picture negative (muted colouring) I turned it off and on but noo luck. How do I get back to my usual screen colours? Thanks for your help!).

First time using the Apple Support Community. Trying to reset my screen so colors don't look like what can only be described as a picture negative. I recall double clicking the home button when this happened before but as that didn't work  this time would be grateful for some help. Many thanks!

So when you triple tap the home button then it goes to negative colors, it is simple to go back. All you have to do is triple tab the home button again and it will go back if it doesnt then, go to Settings>General>Accessibility>And then switch off Invert Colors

  • Best FC settings for broadcast?

    Hello everyone,
I am relatively new at this, and I am looking for a better workflow and FC/compressor/ settings for our productions, and to solve a sound issue.
We use a set of Panasonic AG-HMC150P to capture external videos, so the footage is in HD (imported through ProRes)... sometimes we use our older Panasonic DVXs connected to a Tricaster to produce on-location multi-camera programs, and finally we record our studio programs on DV mini-tapes and/or recorded DVDs.
We need to produce each program in two formats: DVDs, and Mpeg-2 muxed to feed our video server (Cablecast), which in turns feeds a fiber-optic transmitter to the cable company.
At present what we do is import everything into a preset NTSC DV (3:2) 720x480 sequence (QuickTime Video Settings Compressor set at DV/DVPRO - NTSC) with 48 kHz- 16-bit audio. Then we basically send the finished product to compressor and export it to a standard best-quality 90-min DVD. We use that for our DVD copies of the program. Then what we do is grab the .ac3 and .m2v files created by compressor, and feed them to MPEG-Streamclip, exporting them as an Mpeg with MP2 audio stream; which creates the mpeg-2 file for our cablecast server.
So the first question is this: is there a better/efficient sequence setting or workflow we should use? Should we use one sequence setting for DVD production and then copy the content onto a different sequence with different settings for broadcast/mpeg-2 encoding?
The quality of the mpeg file (when played from the server onto our monitor) is quite good, although I am noticing a loss of quality when I watch the program on TV at home (some visual artifacts and occasional pixellations), but my main problem is sound crackling when the program displays lower thirds (occasionally), more pronounced when PPT files converted to jpeg graphics are displayed in the program. I am VERY careful to keep white levels below 90 IRE (or whatever the scopes indicate as being 90%) and apply broadcast safe filters (chroma and brightness). I keep my average sound level at about -12 dBFS with peaks not exceeding -6 dBFS (sound is compressed in SoundPro).
Any idea what might be causing the crackling? Thank you for any help you can provide...

I found the custom settings that I'd made from the DVD Best 90 minute preset and pasted them below.  I made these based on a screen shot that my client provided of an MPEG Streamslip settings window.
Stefan, you should be able to start from any of the DVD presets in the Settings window.  Then click "Duplicate Selected Setting" (just below the Settins tab, 3rd button over) to add a copy to the "Custom" settings folder.  Select the copy, make changes in the Inspector window and then click "Save" (at the bottom right of the Inspector window).
My settings were for PAL, but the same settings should apply to NTSC minus frame rate and frame size differences.  The key changes that I made were the number of encoding passes (I changed 2-pass to 1-pass) and the bit rate (the average bit rate and the maximum bit rate were increased).  Also, I was encoding from DV source which has the same picture dimensions at its MPEG2 counterpart so there was no need to change the width and height.
After you've made your custom preset, encode a short test file and send it to the broadcaster to see if it's compliant with what they can broadcast before committing an entire program to it.

  • Colour Correction for Web

Hi, I'm hoping someone might be able to offer some kind words of advice
I make videos for DVD and have recently been putting excerpts up on my website
I have no trouble colour correcting for DVD using a broadcast reference monitor, but when exporting to H264 obviously the rules are different.
The colour does not have that Zing of YUV Tv's
So to date I have been turning up the saturation, midrange and highlight brightness and dropping the blacks further, and trying to get the Canvas to look as good as possible
Of course it doesn't help that my cinema display is lighter on the left than on the right!
I'm going for 400 x 225 H264 @ 280kbits sec - looks washed out but even at higher bit rates there's little improvement
Does anybody have any wise words of advice here!
-rules of thumb, quick tips or practical experience.
    Thanks Steve

    Yes, Thank you
Mpeg 4 has better contrast and gives a pretty good picture but obviously needs much higher bitrates and more detail control. Are you suggesting that Popwire compression master is the way to go? ( I sense a new and expensive learning curve!)
However I do like H264 as auto keyframe works well and file size is small
(much better than Flash 8 I think)
Is there a way to improve footage for H264 ?
Or is Mpeg4 really the best way for SD footage?
Apple make a big deal about H264 and their movie site looks good!
    Thanks

  • About to output my first project for broadcast - thanks.

I am very happy to be in the final stages of my project, a 23'30" music show for broadcast here in the UK.
We're essentially a small group of friends, very much music fans, making it for pretty much no money, and all pretty much self taught. Although - these forums should take a lot of the credit in getting this, um, editor, from someone who can cobble together a home video, to being able to get something on air. Albeit in our own lo fi ind of way....
I've spent hours upon hours reading through these forums, not just questions I have asked, but anything and everything i come across that helps build my knowledge. And I never fail to be impressed by the knowledge and patience so many of you have - particularly you high volume posters - the Jim Cookmans, the Xs, the Andy Mees, the Jerry Hofmanns, and many more.
So I really just want to say thanks, your time helping us out is not taken for granted. Least not by me.
So to one last question, for this project anyway...
I have my bars/tone, my clocks, slugs, timecode where it should be, checked excess luma and chroma and all that. I just want to know if there are any other housekeeping type procedures I should do and get into the habit of. eg - should I remove markers from clips that are not longer needed, or collapse Video down to one track, or that kind of thing, before i send it off.
    As always any tips appreciated..
    thanks again
    Hugh

    heee. deep breaths mate!
ok. if you really want to simulate what you'll see off air as per a 14:9 version of your master then you have to simulate what CH4 will do it ... you have to give it a 14:9 crop in a 4:3 frame.
take your 16:9 master and drop the 14:9 safe guide generator on it ... leave the guide turned on.
now nest your 16:9 master into a 4:3 sequence and blow it until the 14:9 crop area, as indicated by the blue guide, is ... cropped should be 114% or so.
turn on FCP's overlays ...see how, in this 4:3 sequence the built-in action safe and title safe overlays now overlay the burnt in guides on your nested sequence?
what you are looking at now is a shallow letterbox 14:9 cropped version of your 16:9 master. that is what CH4 will do to your 16:9 broadcast for their analog terrestrial broadcast path ... and if you kept with the title safe then your keys should be safe
if you want you can go back into your 16:9 master and disable the guide to remove the burn in on the nest, and then burn a DVD of the 4:3 (14:9) sequence. then watch it back on a 4:3 tube TV ... kind of pointless doing all this and then watching it on a 16:9 telly anyway!
by the way, a few days ago I uploaded a new version of my guides plugin for download, with a bucketload of extra controls

  • Do I need to set AI colour profiles for use in ID?

    My previous set up:
    Mac
    CS2 (Illustrator, Photoshop, Bridge)
    Quark XPress 7
    My new set up:
    PC (Win 7)
    CS5 (Illustrator, Photoshop, Bridge, InDesign)
    My problem:
I work for a company that prints newspapers, but my dept also does work for glossy sheetfed printers (magazines leaflets etc)
All my work is exclusively CMYK.
With my previous set up - I didn’t want to have to switch my colour profiles via Bridge as I was constantly juggling two types of jobs:
Our tabloid press - Profile - ISOnewspaper26v4 (CMYK)
Sheetfed Printers - Profile - ISO Coated V2 (Fogra 39) (CMYK)
So I set my CS2 Suite colour settings to  ISO Coated V2 (Fogra 39) and set an action in Photoshop to convert jpegs / eps photos to ISOnewspaper26v4.
So my CS2 working space was set for Sheetfed glossy publications and if I wanted to set a picture to the correct profile for newsprint I just had to open the picture and hit the action that applied the ISOnewspaper26v4 profile.
Regarding Quark – I set up separate templates for each type of job:
One for Profile - ISO Coated V2 (Fogra 39) and one for - Profile - ISOnewspaper26v4.
Regarding Illustrator - I found that Quark 7 didn’t differentiate between Illustrator colour profiles, or if it did, it didn’t show up in ‘Usage’.
If I went to Quark Usage and went to ‘Profiles’ it only listed the Quark profile and any Photoshop profiles, not any Illustrator profiles.
So in Illustrator I just set colour profiles to ‘do not colour manage this document’. So that I only had to worry about changing profiles for Photoshop jpegs / eps’s.
So I had a good little system going that served me well and now my company decided to move us to PC’s and CS5; and I still have the same problem – juggling newsprint jobs and glossy magazine jobs and not wanting to have to synchronise my CS suite colour settings every time I switch between jobs...
So I was hoping to stick with my little system on PC / CS5.
So basically my question is, do I need to worry about Illustrator colour profiles if I am bringing Illustrator files into InDesign? (To clarify, my Illustrator files are always pure vector, so there is no chance of some rogue RGB jpeg sneaking through on a Illustrator file)
Im open to suggestions regarding my set up, but really would prefer not to have to keep switching my colour profiles.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, I wasn't suggesting that your PDFs be exported to RGB, but it is a common workflow these days to keep photos in RGB until you convert them to the correct profile during the export process. This maximizes the potential for re-purposing your documents and allows you to use the same RGB photos for different output purposes without having to do separate CMYK conversions for each destination, so long as you don't need to do any tweaking after the conversion.
And to answer your question, if the .ai files have no embedded color profile they will ALWAYS be considered to use whatever the CMYK working space is in your ID file, so the numbers will be preserved. This means that there will be slight differences in color on output on different devices (the whole point of color management, after all, is to preserve the appearance of colors by altering the numbers for the output device).
Does the vector work you get from Thinstock come with an embedded profile? Is there any color that is critical for matching, such as a corporate color (which should be spot, but that's a different discussion), or do you use the same art in both the newspaper and magazine, and does the client expect a match (which we know isn't going to happen anyway)?
If there's no embedded profile when you start, there's no way to know what the color was supposed to look like, so color management is not possible, really. You can assign a profile, but you'd be guessing. Since the correct appearance at that point is unknown continuing with out color management shouldn't present a problem. The only case where you would need to manage the vector art would be if the color APPEARANCE is critical or you need it to match across different outputs, and in that case you would need to assign a profile and allow ID to preserve the profile on import and remap the numbers, which means you would likely get rich blacks someplace. Since it's unlikely that you can get a good match going from glossy to newsprint, I probably wouldn't even try -- you wouldn't want, for example, to tag the art as newsprint, and have it print subdued on the gloss if it would look better or more correct with the other profile. Color management would be much more useful if you were going from sheetfed to web on the same stock.

  • Can only start up in Safe Mode, please help!

Hi friends, I need your help!
I woke up this morning and my iMac G5 (w/ Leopard) was frozen. I restarted it manually, but it would freeze on a blue screen without loading the OS. It can start up fine in safe mode, but that's it! I've tried repairing permissions and zapping the PRAM - any other ideas?
What can I do in Safe Mode that might fix my comp? I haven't recently installed any applications, and I have all "open at login" items turned off.
    Thanks for your help!

Are you able to start with your install disc? If so, use Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
You might also try running Preferential Treatment to see if you have corrupt preferences.
Please let us know how you get on,

  • After I downloaded the most recent versions of itunes and quicktime  I cannot play any videos, tutorials.  Thank you for any help.

Videos will not play after downloading the mmost recent versions of Itunes and Quicktime.  What can I do?  The video tries to start but freezes and does not respond.

Appreciate the suggestion.  I did the repair, but videos still don't play.
I tried putting quicktime in "safe mode", but that also did not solve the video-play problem.
However, I downloaded a video and that video does play.
A video may start but quickly freezes.
In itunes is the player "quicktime or itunes"?
When I open the quicktime player(its appearance doesn't look like a player with controls for play, pause, etc.).
Maybe the controls appear when play begins' however, then I try to open any song of video, I always get the same message:  "Do you want to allow this website to open a program on your computer(in itunes, I assume).)
If i choose "yes" I get an error message.
I thought this additional information might be helpful, but you can just answer the original question if you have some additional ideas.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Wrong hostname in URL for broadcaster?!

    Hello all,
we (almost) successfully installed BI broadcaster in our productive BI 7.0 (after an upgrade).
But the URL in the mail contains the wrong hostname. Instead of the prd-host it contains the hostname of our BI development box.
Replacing the wrong hostname with the hostname of our productive box brings up the right document.
I could not find the place where to change the hostname. Does anybody have a hint where to look ?
The URL looks like this, but instead
    http://hostname_dev.domain.com:50000/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/pcd!3a
    Thanks for you help !

    Hi Satyabrat,
What is the version of the Solution manager system ?
Please delete the system in SLD and add it again using RZ70.
if u r using solman 7.01 version , goto smsy_setup and synchnorize the system details in SLD.
solman system version is 7.1 ,after system addition check the LMDB* job is completed.
then goto  se38 -> RLMDB_SYNC_TECHNICAL_SYSTEM run the report and select the system.
So it will delete all the old setting and synchronize and update the latest systen details.
Then try the managed system configuration, it will solve the issue.

  • When importing images into LR5 on my laptop, the photos all have a wide yellow streak through them. This only happens on the laptop; I can import the images onto my desktop LR and there isn't the streak of colour.   Can someone help?

When importing images into LR5 on my laptop, the photos all have a wide yellow streak through them. This only happens on the laptop; I can import the images onto my desktop LR and there isn't the streak of colour.   Can someone help?
This is happening even with photos that were taken on another camera, not just mine.  My daughter told me that the laptop recently fell.  The yellow streak is not anywhere else on the laptop, just on the photos in LR.

I have had this problem on my desktop.  I have been attempting to reproduce it where it can be debugged. Here are some observations/facts in my environment--no conclusions:
    1. I do not import from camera or memory stick directly into LR.  I copy all images (using Explorer) from camera to two different locations (backup location first); and then my working area. In both cases, after files are copied I mark them Read-only.
    2. Poor observation, but in any event: the issue has only occurred when I do a large number of images. Its a poor observation as I have no exact number.  I suspect when I do less than 50 always works well every time.  However, I have also done some very large imports without issue.
    3. Error only occurs with my RAW images--for me that's NEF.  I have multiple cameras--those that only capture jpg images have never had an issue in LR.
    4. Even if the file is marked Read Only issues can still occur.  I then remove the image from the disk using LR -- and then manually (Explorer) copy in my backup image -- re import again and all is well.  I think one time I exited LR and replaced the bad file with a backup and restarted LR and all was well again.
    5. When it occurs I have performed a HASH value on the broken file and on the backed up file to determine if the file contents has changed--and each time the file contents has changed.
    6. I have had this occur immediately after import, but most often it occurs like this... import large number of images; Make changes in Development Module on random image, export jpg of changes--exit LR. Open up LR and file is corrupted.
    7. I have had this issue on multiple USB drives ( okay just 2 different drives have been tested ).
What next--fire up Process Monitor and monitor the system (specifically LR) to see if it reports any file open for write access when this occurs.  So, far I have not had process monitor actually running when it occurs--one of these days.

  • HDV mixed format editing and mastering for broadcast TV

    Hi
I have HDV blues with regards mixed format and multi time base.
Any help advice will be greatly appreciated.
I have never handled HDV in multiformat and multiple timebase to Mater and output for Broadcast television.
I am hoping to master to DVD directly on the configuration ( details provided below ) to deliver to NTSC and PAL market for DVD retail.
However I would need to take to a post house, one or more quicktime file to Output to Digital Betacam for television broadcast for both NTSC and PAL formats.
    with regards
problems I am facing are on two fronts:
    1) I am unsure of best quality and workflow to output master on Digital Betacam tape for broadcast TV in NTSC and PAL both formats.
    2) With sequence set at HDV 1080 50i, and export setting as current setting, upon render and export of self contained quicktime direct from FCP timeline I face few troubling symptoms;
    - that the quicktime exports 3mins to 35 minutes of qt clip but not the whole program of 90 minutes as one clip. System crashes and I have to reboot.
    - Another symptom is that by doing above my time line shows aduio as out of sync to video. here i see that Audio tracks A1,A2 as being torn apart at cut edit points and have gap of 1 frame at random ( but not on all edit points ).
A3, A4 and other music and sound fx tracks have slipped off sync by few frames , again at random and also other places the edit comes back in sync with audio.
    - Of course I am having to re- render this sequence timeline a zillion times even though the previously rendered files still exist in relevant folder.
    Program duration: 90 minutes
    current sequence : 1440 x 1080 at 50i
edit sequence time-line consists following source material directly ingested from tape via firewire in native HDV and DV:

    -HDV footage of 1440 x 1080, 60i

Hi guys, thanks for getting back to me. My client has now changed her mind and so I'm just mixing XDCAM and HDV 16:9 footage which is absolutely fine. Awesome. Thanks for your help!
I have one issue - some of the XDCAM footage she has given me is .MP4 video (actually each clip is a folder with 5 files in it (.MP4, .SMI, .PPN, .XML, .BIM). Do I have to convert the .MP4 into .MOV via Compressor to work with it (presumably this will compress it somewhat) or can I convert it simply and losslessly somehow (perhaps using sony XDCAM software?)
    Thanks again for any help!

  • Change colour font for active line in clearing transaction

    Hello,
Our system is SAP ECC 6.0 with SAP GUI 710. When the signature design is activated, we have a problem of colour contrast between active/desactive lines in the transaction for clearing document (F-32 for example) : the active line is in dark blue and the inactive is in black. So it is difficult for several users to clearly see the difference between the active/desactive lines and they must choose the previous design (Enjoy or classic design). In fact, in classical desing is the active/desactive line in red/black or in the enjoy in Electrical bleu/black.
I will add that it is not possible to change the colour theme in the design options in our configuration (perhaps is something missing ?).
Does someone know if there is a possibility to change the colour policy ?
I thank you in advance for your help.

  • Standard template for broadcasting

    Hi,
Can anybody tell me what is the standard template for broadcasting?  I am confused between:
    0BROADCASTING_TEMPLATE
    0QUERY_TEMPLATE_BROADCASTING70
    0BROADCAST_INDEX_PAGE
    0REPORT_TEMPLATE_BROADCASTING
Moreover I cannot see all the new distribution types when I create a setting.  We are running it in portal..
    Thanks

    See the documentation for thius.
