Column overlap in Design View
I'm working on a tutorial based on the book 'Mastering CSS
with DW CS3'
I have downloaded the tutorial files from the books website
yet when I open the 3 Column elastic, header and footer layout in
Design View the columns overlap one another, if I preview in a
Browser, they are fine.
Is there some setting in DW CS3 which needs turning on or
off?

The bit that worries me is that it says 'Dreamweavers 32 css
based layouts'
Now to be perfectly honest I haven't followed what
Dreamweaver produces
for some time in the way of template css layouts BUT in
previous version
they were total crap, far far too complicated in terms of
css.
If this book is attempting to use the existing css templates
that ship
with the program then I'm sceptical about how good the book
really is
for someone wanting to learn css.
I know Stephanie and a lot of other so called css gurus and I
worry that
sometimes they write purely for financial gain and perhaps
overlook
the 'real' needs for those wanting to learn css.
In my personal opinion you don't need a book to learn either
html or
css. Its available all over the place for FREE.
I'd go to somewhere like maxdesign.com.au - click on the css
tab and go
to 'floatutorial' Go to tutorials 8/9 and work through them.
They will
give you the basic understanding of how a css construction is
produced.
Have a look around the site in general. The reason I think
this guys
site (Russ Weakley) is THE BEST on the web for learning css
is because
he is a 'hands-on' commercial web designer unlike the people
you mention
who are 'consultants' i.e., they get other people to actually
do the
work because its generally very boring and beneath them. They
like to
speak but when it actually comes to producing anything they
are'nt
interested.
Take a look at his portfolio. Not only is he hands-on but he
too
speaks at conferences about html/css and accesibility.
Its a rare breed that can 'talk the talk' and 'walk the
walk'. He has
also produced a beginners guide to css BUT its not his main
source of
income like other authors. He is just sharing his extensive
knowledge as
a by-product of his natural work flow. I bet it will teach
you more
about css in '10 minutes' than most other books.

Upgrade work better w/ css in design view?
I have DW8. With css based pages it sometimes is quite
awkward in design view. Has the latest version of DW improved in
that respect? I don't mean preview mode, I mean design mode where I
edit text.How does it appear in the browser preview? Does the page
validate here -

Why does Vertical Menu conceal items in design view?
I have a problem with a vertical menu that is placed in my page's left column. When workign in desing view, the vertical menu's sub menu components remain open and this conceals the things that I want to work on that are placed behind the sub-menu items. Any ideas how I can "collapse" the menu when workginin design view? Thanks!
Hello Beth, to follow is the CSS for my menu bar (vertical). I see that the left: -10000em; is in there correctly. Notice anything out of line? Thanks for your input!!!

:confused; I'm working in Dreamweaver 8 (Windows XP). I'm
using the 2col_leftNav.css (tweaked somewhat) for my pages. I'm
having some problems with the display in Design view.
For quite some time, whenever I entered new text into a page,
everything in the div (content > feature) shifted to the right.
If I italicized or bolded the text, everything would shift back
into position. If I changed it back into normal font, it stayed in
place until I added more content. Quite annoying, but I managed.
Something that just started (taking over the previous issue,
with no apparent reason/causal factor): the content > feature
div has shifted to the left, overlapping the left column
navigation. I haven't found anything that will make things shift
back into place. This is very hard to read, and makes working in
design view almost impossible.
Any idea what is going on here and what I can do about

You forgot to post the url so we really can't say.
This is something that presents itself ONLY in Dreamweaver.
When I look at the file in a browser, it looks fine. When I post
the page to the internet, it's fine. The issue is just in editing
the page in Dreamweaver.

</div>Dreamweaver is pretty good these days at showing the page in Design View how it will be viewed when online. HOWEVER having said that it does largely depend on the way you write the css.
I guess for Dreamweaver it's impossible for it to show every concievable way you can write css correctly. Unfortuantely if your css is not compatible with what Dreamweaver likes it won't make a great job of rendering the site correctly in Design View, that's always been the case.
The css is not wrong but I've seen many display issues in Dreameaver Design View caused as a direct result of the css being overly complex to crack simple presentation. I guess it's in the lap of the gods if you are fortunate enough to have found the way to write css that Dreamweaver likes. -
Certain images not showing up in Design View
Hi,
I recently switched from Dreamweaver CS5.5 to CS6 with Creative Cloud but now some of my images aren't showing up in Design View. Everything is fine in Live View.
Any help would be gratefully received. I have attached the CSS & the HTML as well as two screen shots of Design View and Live View.

Unfortunately, Design View is incapable of displaying CSS border-radius, gradients, shadows and other CSS level 3 properties. That's why we have Live View which behaves more like a real browser.
If you can't live with this, disable CSS in DW by going to View > Style Rendering > untick display styles.
Or, use a Design-Time Style Sheet that contains no CSS level 3 properties.

Hello all,
I have what so far appears to be a fairly unique problem. We are running a multilingual SharePoint 2010 environment with English as the default language and French as the secondary. We have setup the sites in a variance relationship, but the
issue I am discussing happens outside of a variant as well.
We have created a library outside the variant (but within the collection) that the two sites must share. A list view web part was created via Designer to add to each site to provide a quick view into the list. If we are in the libary and switch
to French, then update the column label it will remember the setting (because of the resource file) and maintain it as the language is flipped back and forth. Where it doesn't work is as a web part in a variant or where the language is different.
If the language is different, the out of the box columns work find, but the custom columns (all site columns not library\list columns) remain as the english label. It doesn't matter if within a variant or outside with the browser language changed.
It always reverts back to English. It's like it isn't using the same resource file that was used in the list itself.
I created a custom view and modified it with xslt as per
http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/50004/how-to-change-column-title-for-a-view-but-not-modify-the-list but this only worked within the list and did not occur in the list view either.
I can't be the first that has come across it, either I am not performing my searches properly, no one has ever documented a fix for this or this is something we just can't fix with OOTB tools. That's the other thing, the solution has to be accomplised
OOTB or with minor client side changes. I can't fire up Visual Studio because they are piloting Office 365 and have put a "No custom code" mandate on for migration.
Thank you all in advance.Ok, I have come up with a solution. I edited the XSLT for the web part on the page. I did the following:
1. Create the variants in the Site Ccollection
2. Create the library outside of the variants.
3. Add all the columns you require for the library. It is very important all the columns are there before you move on.
4. Create a French and English view.
5. Create the list view web part via designer.
6. Add the list view web part to each site selecting the appropriate view to use.
7. Edit the page in SharePoint Designer 2010.
8. Place cursor in the column you wish to modify.
9. Click Design in the List View Tools on the ribbon.
10. Then click Customize XSLT and select Customize Item. Select this option otherwise you will generate a **LOT** of unnecessary XSL code.
11. You are looking for a piece that resembles the following:

12. Modify it by typing in the actual column name you want. You should end up with something like this:

There are some caveats:
1. Doesn’t appear to work in a publishing portal. I think this has to do with how SP stores the pages in this case. In a publishing portal you can only modify the page layout which won’t work as we need to modify the content.
2. If you add another column, you will need to repeat the XSLT modification
Anyways, I hope this helps out any others with the same issue or need as I had. -
Design view of CSS layout is innacurate
Hello all -
I'm beginning to redraft my company's hompage using a full
CSS layout instead of our current nested table layout. Since I need
to ensure that other staff members can edit pages freely - and I'm
the only person comfortable doing straight code - it's important
that the design view is as accurate as possible.
When editing in Dreamweaver 8, my three column layout (a left
table of contents, a center content column, and an additional
content right column) breaks so that the table of contents
dissapears. Some people have spoken with have suggested that my
problem might be the negative margins I'm using to position the
floated columns that form the meat of the page.

In addition, the header navbar also appears strangely. In
Design View, two word titles (ie. "Our Programs") break on to two
separate lines, instead of staying in one line as they do in
browsers I've tested.
The frustrating thing about this is that my design seems to
work in most browsers - but without a somewhat accurate
representation in Dreamweaver, I won't be able to sell the idea of

MattYour CSS is not tight enough to get accurate columns. You
shouldn't try to
define the columns with the body tag. For a purely CSS site,
you really find
out why the code is called 'cascading' styles. They cascade
all right. We've
just finished wrestling with a similar re-design with CSS and
the order of
how tags and files come into play is very important.
We have defined the body tag with background color, 0 margins
and font
family, color and size only. Header/footer and columns are
defined by ID.
The three "content" columns are within a page container,
header and footer
outside the page container. How these elements are placed is
important, as
they cascade.
We use 3 linked main css files, 1) Page Layout (3 or 4
different options) 2)
Page presentation (all text styles) 3) Page menu styles (only
menu styles).
They are in that order, as the only body tag is in Page
Layout.
If a page has a watermarked background we import the code
just for the
watermark.
This is not true for the home page, but all other pages in
the site.

How can I set up the design view to show me what the page
actually looks like? I'm going back to doing tabled webpages
because it obviously can't handle CSS div tags, but the design view
shows my tables (rows/columns) with dashed lines, a bunch of green
arrows and pixel widths, etc. All I want to see is what the page
looks like. Am I screwed and have to alt+tab over to an IE window
to view my changes? Note: I'm working on a prototype for a
website-these are just going to be click-thru screens (no real

Actually looks like? In which browser? In which version? In
short, there
is no way to do this. Preview in the desired browsers to see
what it
actually looks like. And code the page so that it validates
to get the most
reliable cross-browser rendering - but be aware, DMX2004 is
not the best at
rendering CSS layouts.

Why does some text disappear in Design View?
Hi,
I've had a website for about six years. On my Windows XP computer I used Dreamweaver 8 with minimal problems. When I upgraded to Windows 7 last spring, I bought Dreamweaver CS5. I've had a lot of problems since then. Here's the latest and most serious:
I went to edit my homepage about a week ago, and all the text in the middle column (not the left or right sidebars) suddenly disappeared in Design View. If I click on Live View, the text shows up, as it does on the internet. This now seems to be happening in each page I open. I'm unable to edit my pages.
I tried to install the recent update from Adobe.com, but was unable to do so. An adobe tech told me to reinstall Dreamweaver and try again. No luck.
I never had this problem in earlier versions of Dreamweaver. My website is on the first page of Google in many categories, and I'm afraid to change it much. How do I fix this problem?

KaraYou have some issues, however I dont know if they are related. You have two opening <html> tags....thats not good. I would suggest you fix your validation issues first, see if that doent help, if it does not, let us know.

When I click Live View, I can see my page, and it shows up in a browser just fine, but I can't edit in that mode. However, when I click Live View again, I just get a gray, blank page with the tag, meta, sytle, script, and link icons at the top left. I've been tinkering with it for the last two hours, and nothing I try is getting the page to appear in Design, or Split view. It's driving me nuts. Any suggestions?

Since this is a one-column layout, the .content is not floated.
Logo Replacement
An image placeholder was used in this layout in the .header where you'll likely want to place a logo. It is recommended that you remove the placeholder and replace it with your own linked logo.
Be aware that if you use the Property inspector to navigate to your logo image using the SRC field (instead of removing and replacing the placeholder), you should remove the inline background and display properties. These inline styles are only used to make the logo placeholder show up in browsers for demonstration purposes.
To remove the inline styles, make sure your CSS Styles panel is set to Current. Select the image, and in the Properties pane of the CSS Styles panel, right click and delete the display and background properties. (Of course, you can always go directly into the code and delete the inline styles from the image or placeholder there.)

Design View Not Displaying Pages with any Formatting
I asked this question in another thread and somebody locked it. The question is not answered. My Design view is not displaying my files with any formatting. I can view them in a browser, but not in Design view where I can see my work as I'm working. While I can upload files to the remote server (host provider) the links got screwed up so files on the remote server don't show any formatting either. Every link, thousands of links, are off by one word (folder) from where my site was residing on my hard drive. When I try to make a change to the links manually then I can no longer view them with any formatting in my own browser either.
On my local broswer on my PC the address line reads: http://localhost/folderNameIneedToDelete/filename.php
On the live website (for my homepage) the address line reads http://websiteName.com/folderNameIneedToDelete/index.html

I just added a remote server to my site so I could begin uploading files to my host provider. When I saved the setup I saw a message popup about the cache changing. Now when I try to view a file in Dreamweaver in Design View it doesn't recognize any of the external style sheets. It displays with no formating.
I can still view the pages in a browser and they look appropriate, just not in Design View where I can continue working on the site as I've been doing.
How do I get Design View to display my pages properly again using the .css pages that apply to each page design?

using an external link will always reflect the latest changes(Question) - If I link to this .js file externally at google instead of linking to a current copy in my _script folder could future changes to this external .js file cause future problems with the webpages that have this file attached?

Setup a remote server using the ftp address settings provided by the host provider. (Question) Any settings defined for the future Remote Server (the first remote server was deleted when problems occured) will not cause any harm to anything involving the Testing Server such as viewing webpages in Design View, browsers accessed from the "Preview/Debug in browser" icon in Dreamweaver and will not cause any harm to any files eventually put to the host provider via that future Remote Server. Is that correct?

I have discovered a way to make Design View work as expected in Flash Builder 4.6 with Flex SDK 4.9. I tried it on one of my existing projects and I can use Design View as normal, debugging tools and export to release build no problem.
The workaround is really easy to apply. But if you want to try it, please do so at your own risk.
Here's what I did:
Remove Flex SDK 4.9 from Flash Builder 4.6 (if already exists)
In the Flex SDK 4.9 folder, edit the "flex-sdk-description.xml" file, changing the "version" number from "4.9.0" to "4.6.0"
Re-add the SDK into Flash Builder
Open a project and choose to use Flex SDK 4.9
Open Design ViewWow - thanks for the quick response!
As for the column moving, I usually can do it, but I've got a fairly complex view I'm building - there are a lot of widgets in there....so posting an example will not be easy. I wasn't concerned about that one to be honest.

JDev 10.0.3.2 - JSF Design View
in jdeveloper 10.0.3.2 the jsp design view does not work anymore for myfaces and trinidad JSF components.
it works in jdeveloper 10.0.3.1 with the exception of tomahawk components that rely on the myfaces extension filter.
after some investigation it turned out that the design time container seems to be tied with ADF faces, event if they are not used in the project (see jdeveloper stacktrace below).
so i tried the J2EE edition 10.0.3.2 with does not contain ADF at all and the design view works fine with this edtion.
has anyone similar experiences?- maybe someone from jdeveloper dev team can take a look at this.

I'm trying to do this for a few EO/VO pairs so I'll give a generic example.
I have an EO made up of the following fields (id, accessstring) and a corresponding VO with (id, accessstring, descr) fields. The descr field is the transient attribute. I'd like to set the accessstring value to the descr value.
What I tried, and forgive the simplicity of my first shot, was the following override in the VOImpl class:

This works, but executes far too often and I get the JBO error from the original post. I'm not aware of anything at the VOImpl level to test state like I could if I were at the EOImpl level (e.g. the prepareforDML method). So either I'm going about this completely the wrong way or there's something I'm missing in the postChanges to have this code execute less often. -
JSF design view - visual components are shrinking
Hello,
I have some strange issue while using Design view for JSF and data binding.
Once I drop any data control elements into visual component (panel, etc) my visual components are shrinking to such size, that I cannot distinguish any elements within design view. I cannot use design view since then and have to place all elements base on structure panel.
How to reproduce:
1. Create new JSF page with wizard and accept defaults.
2. Drop one of the panels (panel box, panel group layout) into JSF layout
At this stage my visual elements occupy 100% of design view screen and represent anticipated outcome
3. Drag and drop one of the data control elements (data control panel) into created panels on JSF and create table or form
Immediately after it visual panel where data control was dropped shrinks to approximately 1/4 of the screen and I cannot see neither available space nor created table for my data components.
I figured out, that if I remove created by wizard default <af:messages> tag from the top of my JSF, then design view representation fixes. Not sure if I should remove <af:messages> from all my pages.
Above all looks to me as and bug.
Environment:
-Jdeveloper 11g
-Windows Vista 64b

1. I tried to play with screen size without result
2. I checked your video post, but this does not resolve my issue
3. This issue occures with all JSF pages and can be reproduced even when following official Oracle step by step tutorials.
4. I figured out, that removing <af:messages> tag resolves the issue ?! It seems this tag is added by default during drag and drop binding.
5. On this link http://drop.io/jdev_001 you can see how design view is changes with and without <af:messages> tag
6. Below is code example from one of the tutorials, that leads to shrinking as well:
7. Once app is deployed and running page get normal view in IE as expected, so it seems to me, it is issue with Jdev design view, probably influenced by my environment, if nobody reported it before.
