Com.apple.mail.drag
Hi all
I've been encountering an oddity and just took the time to look a bit more closely.
When an attachment is dragged from the body of a Mail message to the desktop. Then the user quits mail and logs out (multiple users environment) there is created a Rescued Items folder in the trash that contains a directory com.apple.mail.drag with the attachment inside.
Can anyone clarify what's going on here and how to prevent it ?
OS is 10.4.8 Powermac G5

Ta. I'll follow up the article. Only other problem is similar but not the same. It occurs with word files which are problematic because they will not delete from the trash. This has only started recently and I thought it was confined to the two intel imacs we bought but has extended to others. It seems related to word art that people have taken to using and I'm upgrading all the machines to Office 2004 so I'm hoping that one will just go away.

Where can I find the folder: com.apple.mail.drag
Which is the folder that files are saved into when I accidentally press "Save" button instead of "Save All".
1. It tells me that it is in a folder called Privet, but I'm unable to find it via finder.

shlomitI believe your screenshot is only showing a temporary repository of the file, which may not be permanent. Where it would/should go when clicking the Save button should be the Mail Downloads folder, unless you in Mail Preferences/General have specified another target in the box beside Downloads Folder.
The Mail Downloads folder would be found by double-clicking on your hard drive icon, clicking on the Icon of a house (thus the common reference beginning with Home), and it will be there along with Documents, Library, Music, Movies, etc. If you check this folder named Mail Downloads you may be surprised by what you find stored there.

Mail wont launch at all. Deleted this: ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Mail wouldnt let me send outgoing mail claiming there to be an error whilst there was an outgoing connection. So I thought to completely reset the entire app and found a forum that told me to delete something >_> And so I deleted this ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and now nothing will launch. And well. Nothing is backed up. Im an idiot. ;___; I just want to go back to my chalk and slate. TECHNOLOGY HATES ME. Please help me.

You could also try com.apple.helpviewer.plist (in ~/Library/Preferences). Have you noted whether this is system-wide or restricted to your user account? I'd create a test account (if you don't have another on your system) and try the help menus. If they're messed up over there, then fixing things in your user folder won't help. The only system resource I could find that seems remotely relevant is /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.helpdata.plist, but I'd be verrrry careful about messing around with stuff in your System folder.

Pretty sure this will be some sort of user error, but i'm lost.
I had to have my hard drive replaced, so before taking it to the genius bar, i backed up using time machine. I'd had issues with trying to use Carbon Copy Cloner previously so had formatted the external drive before doing time machine. TM seemed to work fine and copied what looked to be everything. Once i'd got the new hard drive in and went to restore everything, when i looked for the file i need to get to apparently get my mails back (Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist) it's not there.
Any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated.
JTurn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source disk. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the icon list. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane. -

Since moving from HDD to SSD and Lion to ML I am getting loads of these errors in my System Log

Thanks, Chris.The .plist files are almost always preferences. I believe "plist" is short for "property list". It contains a list of keys (configuration options) and settings for each key, similar in some respects to the way the Windows Registry works, except that there is a separate file for each set of settings, instead of a single registry file as in Windows. In this case it's a shared settings file for Mail, but I couldn't tell you anything more about the contents.
You were smart to back it up. Usually .plist files can be deleted without signicant loss, because they will be recreated automatically with default settings. But sometimes they contain important settings that may be hard to set up again, especially if you had help setting up your computer in the first place, or have lost important details that you'd need for setting up an app, such as Mail. But sometimes the settings are trivial, for example the position and size of windows, etc., and do not contain settings you'd care about, which may be in another .plist file or in some other kind of file/database. -
Restore E-Mails without com.apple.mail.plist
Hello - Somehow my Mac crashed and my com.apple.mail.plist is empty - and if I open Mail it asked me to create an account. (like first time starting).
I have a backup of all my emails ~/Mail folder but i dont have a backup of the com.apple.mail.plist - is there any change to restore my Emails without doing this whole add new account thing?
ThanksYou should ask your ISP for your lost information about your account, create a new account with an empty mail folder. Then, quit Mail, exchange your empty ~/Mail by your backup folder and then reimport your mails.

On all machines, permissions are repaired once a week and Onyxed twice a month.

Mail: com.apple.mail.exchange.serveroverload
My customer got himself a brand new macbook pro and transfered all the data he had over from a previous version of osx. I believe he is now 10.8 and was 10.7 but am not sure about that. Ever since then he has had problems connecting to both imail and icalander. The icalender must constantly have the ssl setting toggled off as it seems to randomly re-enable itself. That is not the main issue however, he constantly gets disconnected from his mail account. During these down times he can access webmail. When I recreate the profile it fixes the problem for around a week and then the problem returns. I have tried completely wiping all the accounts (he has several linked) and recreating them, but that has no affect. I have tried combing through all settings to no avail and have reduced the number of messages in inbox since below capture was taken. I am constantly seeing errors such as the title for this post. I will include the general errors below. Please help as I am out of ideas.

I would put these items in a folder of their own, in the remote possibility they are needed. Then make a fresh install of iWork from the source disk. If Mail is not working, it may first be necessary to go further and refresh the OS, by booting into the Recovery partition. -
Many com.apple.mail.plist files in Library directory
I have 1,779 com.apple.mail.plist files in my library directory, all of which are dated September 12, 2010 at seemingly random times all in the PM.
These files are supposed to contain information about Mail preferences and account, right? Seems like way too many files.
Can I delete them?
Why was I looking at them anyway, you ask? Because I was trying to solve the problem of com.apple.quicklook.satellite errors in my log, went into the Library directory to delete the quicklook plist files and notices these mail plist files.
So, can I delete these?I would delete them. Only one should exist, and it is located in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. To access that folder start with:

Pick one of the following methods:
A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN.
B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
~/Library

Apple mail drag and drop to folder
Hi everyone,
Just wondered if the functionality to be able to drag and drop email from mail to a folder on my desktop has been removed or if it's an option I need to find.
I don't want to file>save each email every time.

BenIt works fine for me as-is, using OS X 10.6.7 and Mail 4.5.
Note that the file dragged out and dropped onto the Desktop or into a folder on the Desktop will be a Mail document, not a text document.
If I want to quick-copy/export an email, I open the message in Mail, click once in the lower pane to make it active, then press Command-A (Select All). This highlights the body text of the email, which I can then drag out onto the Desktop where it becomes a regular clipping rather than a Mail doc.
Note re drag-and-drop -
If you click on the name of a message in the list and quickly try to drag it out to the Desktop it doesn't seem to work. However, if you click and hold for a second or two, the message line will dim a bit; if you then drag, it will follow along and drop where you let go of it. -

In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. Move the following items from the folder that opens to the Trash (some may not exist):
Caches/com.apple.mail
Saved Application State/com.apple.mail.savedState
Leave the Finder window open for now.
Try to launch Mail. If the problem is solved, you’re done. Otherwise, move these items, if they exist, from the open Library folder to the Desktop:
Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
Containers/com.apple.mail
Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Preferences/com.apple.mail.searchhistory.plist
Try Mail again. If it launches, you'll have to recreate some of your settings. Delete the items you moved to the Desktop.
If Mail still doesn't work, put the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were. You don’t need to replace the items you moved to the Trash.
Move the subfolder named "Mail" — not the Mail application — from the Library folder to the Desktop.
Test. If Mail now launches, it will prompt you to set up an account. Cancel and restore the Mail folder from the most recent backup you have that predates the issue. A corrupt database is causing the problem.
If there’s no improvement, put back the Mail folder and post your results. -
Mac mail and sandbox com.apple.intern issue
Hi,
I have two disk on yosemite. One of them, system disk as SSD, and other HDD data disk.
I set hard link ~/Library/Mail to /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Mail
and set read/write permissions.
when run mail client ask always mail settings, after crash the application.
I can see created new a few *.plist files under the /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Mail and ~/Library/Mail
so, I check logs from console.app and I see following error ;

how can i fix this problem ?
Thanksi navigate to /Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences in the finder and delete com.apple.mail.plist file in the folder.

Apple Mail crashes on Start – Mountain Lion 10.8.5
After upgrading to Mountain Lion - and installing 10.8.5 update, the Mail application no longer works - it crashes on open. This happened after a system-wide crash which happened while Mail was syncing my Gmail account for the first time after a clean install of Mountain Lion.
Is there a way to solve this other than reinstalling whole system? Can I reinstall just the Mail app?

hold down option

4. you could restore Mail from the backup you made before the 10.8.5 update. You did make a backup, didn't you? You should always make a backup before and update. In case something like this happens.
5. If all that doesn't work then I'd do the reinstall. There is an app called Pacifist CharlesSoft — software you always wished someone would write that can extract just the Mail installer from the entire ML installer but you'll have to download all of ML again first if you don't have a copy of the installer handy. -
Move Apple mail 2.07 account directory to another location/partition
Hi all,
Was bugged by few problems after the update to 10.4.6.
As follows:
All my emails disappear after it. Knowing that i previous did some customising of moving to different folder, i try to import it in and everything is there under the folder Import. Solved on my first problem.
I have since drag all folders from Import to the main and deleted off the folder Import.
While i starting to add accounts into the new Mail 2.07, i faced another problem. I am unable to set the account directory for the account i have created. This is bugging me as i have all my emails on the other partition and it contains 2GB of all my important emails i need. though i have successfully imported them into Mail 2.07, i wish to move the mail to the other partition so i can have a easier time not needing to housekeep now and then since most of my emails have large attachments with them.
I tried accessing Andrew Pontious's helpfultiger tips after some searching within this discussion and found that his site is no longer functioning.
Have also tried the other method of adding a new account without the assistance by pressing "Option" when clicking the "+" icons and the Mail preference panel just hang on me without anything shown. Forcing me to do a force quit on Mail and try again and again. And still, after last night of countless tries, i still unable to progress any further.
Help needed :
1. Any ways to push my mail to other partition other than setting the account directory within the account setting to the other partition?
2. If able to customise the default folder from /Library/Mail to another partition, that will be nicer.
3. If no way to set the default account directory, possible to customise a folder which is located at the other partition and create a rule to move the mails into that folder?
Pardon me for this lengthy post as i have been bugged by few other problems other than this Mail and desperately needing help to get my Mail back in order to carry on working.
N.B: I have tested my iMac hardware, did a disk verification and permission repair and everything is doing fine.I must be missing something here, because this is
starting to make little sense to me. In my previous
reply I did give you step-by-step instructions
to accomplish what you want. Have you tried it? Is
there something there you didn't understand? If
replacing the HOME/Library/Mail folder with an
alias doesn't work, I'm pretty sure it can be done
using Unix symbolic links instead, but I believe
Finder aliases are preferable here if they work (and
I believe they do).
Why on Earth would someone prefer to play with more
involved hacks that only provide a partial solution
and that are more likely to cause problems?
Never doubted your suggestion and was gladful for it.
However, i tried and my mail didn't show up with those personal folders which i created to categorize the chunk of emails i got. Ended up i reverse the process and everything is back in Mail again.
One thought after last night of trying, com.apple.mail.plist.
Will try to see if i can edit the default location ~/Library/Mail to my preferred location on the other partition by means of editing the plist.
Will update if any result.

Apple Mail Manual Migration 10.6 to 10.8
I am currently making the switch from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. I have always manually migrated all of my data because I feel its better to give the hard drive a chance for some spring cleaning and get rid of the junk that accumulates over the years. Apple mail seems to organize the mail files a little differently than in 10.6. I see a V2 folder in it and I made a test account to compare with how my Mail folder looks, and they do look a bit different.
My Question:
I read in another forum that if you simply paste everything from the old mail folder to the new one (along with relevant preference and keychain files) that mail in 10.8 will do what it needs to do to organize them. Is this true? If I simply drag and drop everything from my old mail folder, will mountain lion mail recognize those files and work without a problem?I'm in the process of upgrading from an early 2008 iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to a Mid 2011 iMac with Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and had a similar query but things seem to have gone smothly for me with a manual mail transfer / migration.
I have 3 email accounts but quite a lot of messages along with folders, rules, etc to filter them all. At the very least, I just wanted to get all the messages across in tact and preferably in the correct folders. I was willing to set up the rest manually.
I have actually managed to transfer all messages, folders (with structure), rules and mail accounts with all server details. All I had to do was provide the 3 passwords. The ML installation was clean from scratch (bought it 2nd hand) and I did not open Mail at all. I don't know for sure whether this is very important but I worked on the basis that it might be.
I managed this by first rebuilding every mailbox and folder on the SL iMac. I then quit Mail and in Finder, I navigated to the Library where I copied the 'Mail' and 'Mail Downloads' folders to a USB stick. I also went to the preferences folder (still in Library) and copied the com.apple.mail.plist file but also came across another apple mail plist file with a lot of numbers and letters so I copied that to the USB stick too. So I have two folders and two plist files.
On the ML iMac, I navigate to Library (with a Finder windo open, click on the Go menu, hold left option key and it will appear in the menu). For safety's sake, I made a copy of the existing Mail folder which contained a V2 folder and some stuff under that. I then deleted it from the Library and copied the two folders on my USB stick. There were no mail plist files in the preferences folder (presumably because I hadn't run Mail at all yet), so I dropped in the two plist files from my SL machine.
That was it, so I ran Mail which came up with a first time use screen, then there was a splash screen informing me that it was updating / upgrading my migrated mailboxes, etc and that this may take a few minutes. I didn't time it but it didn't take very long and then it asked for passwords for each of my email accounts. After that, Mail opened a proper displaing all mailboxes, smart mailboxes, folders, accounts, etc. Rules appear to be in tact. Looking at the library now and the folder structure has completely changed with a V2 folder and so on.
This is exactly what I was hoping to achieve and I didn't think it would work but for those moving from SL to ML, it can be done. If it hadn't worked, my next move was to upgrade the SL iMac to ML and then try to migrate that way.
