Comcast - WRT160N & WRT310N disconnect

This is more for advisement - information in hopes a Linksys rep occassionally reads through this.
I have both models - WRT160N & WRT310N on the comcast network.  They intermittently seize and require a reboot.
The WRT160N has a static IP on the Comcast business service (which is handled by a SMC cable modem).
The WRT310N has standard DHCP.
Operating systems on the LAN side of both routers are either Windows XP or Vista.
When the routers seize, you cannot pass traffic wired or wireless to the devices.
After a power cycle the devices are accessible for a then unknown amount of time until the next lock up.
I would encourage business users to try a different brand or certainly model as this can become a problem.
After reading some of the material, there may be a bad DHCP broadcast that can cause the lock up, but as the WRT160N is static, it should ignore same.
Good luck all.

  • COMCAST ISP - WRT310N, Network Switches - HELP!!!!!!

    Let's try again:
Hi Folks:  I have a question and I will explain my setup in hopes someone will have an answer that will be sustained.
    I have:
    1. WRT310N
    2. 2 Linksys 5 Port 10/100 Switches
    3. RCA Comcast Cable Modem
Up until Friday, my cable modem was plugged into the WRT310N wireless router via the internet port (MAC CLONING OFF).  My two switches were also plugged into the 310N via the additional ports on the 310N, and also plugged into the 310N was my Solaris 10 server.  All worked properly.
Clearly something changed via Comcast, because that configuration no longer works and I changed nothing.  Through some troubleshooting, I find that the only way I can get back on is to turn on MAC CLONING, and disconnect my two 5 port switches.  The second I plug in any of the switches, I can no longer utilize my network.
Is there a way that I can have these two switches in place plugged into the router with mac cloning on and have it still allow the hosts on plugged into those switches to get on the inernet?
FYI, the wirless network still allows my laptops to get on, and plugging a machine directly into the router LAN ports still allow me to get on, its only when I go thru the 5 port Linksys switches (which used to work fine) is where i am having problems.
    Thoughts???????

Connect the two Switchs to the LAN of the router & configure the router according to the comcast cable connection .....

  • WRT160N V3 disconnections on vista

I've had this router for a few months now and it acts really funky.
Previously I had a laptop and an older p3 desktop system hooked up via wireless. The router is currently located rather far from where the comptuers are located, in a seperate building on our property. We've been remodelling the house so we haven't had our isp come out and move the setup into the house yet. However, signal strength isn't really an issue as much as convenience of getting to the router when it needs to be reset.
Anyway, the problem was *(and is) that I'd have a great connection with the laptop and be able to browse, ftp, chat, whatever fine but if i started doing several things at once, like browsing while uploading a large selection of files, it would disconnect me. Or more accurately I should say it would downgrade my connection to "local only". I would have to right click on the network icon and disconnect from the network then reconnect to it again to get my connection back. I would have to repeat this over and over until my files finished uploading. Yet the older computer, running xp, didn't seem to have this issue at all.
Recently I hooked up a newer system running vista instead of the xp system and now it too has this connectivity issue, although not as often since we don't do a lot of ftp with it. Yet both computers still have this connectivity issue whenever we load multiple pages at a time. It's like a heavy load causes the router to "crap it's brain" or something. We get the connection back again only after disconnecting and reconnecting to the network.
I have no idea if the wired connections would do the same as there's no way to test that right now. I've been researching the issue and it seems several other people have had this same problem but the only "solution" i've seen was to use something other than windows to manage the connection. I tried using the LELA thing to manage it instead and it doesn't work at all. Won't even recognize the router. That's probably my fault more than faulty software but still, either way you look at it, the router should not be doing this.
Is there some kind of firmware update i'm missing or some other fix that I've been unable to locate so far?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd hate to move this router into the house later and find that it is STILL not working properly.

What is the distance between the Laptop and the Router..?
    - Change the MTU to 1364.
    - Uncheck " document.write("Filter Anonymous Internet Requests")Filter Anonymous Internet Requests" under Security tab.
    - Under Wireless tab,Set Channel Width to 20MHz and Channel to 11.
    - Under Advance Wireless Settings,Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,RTS Threshold to 2304.

  • Connect my Airport Extreme to Comcast modem

I have just ordered Comcast high speed internet service and they installed a Motorola Surfboard SB5120. They plugged it into my computer directly and I thought it was running fine. When I disconnected and tried to install it in my Apple Extreme, it doesn't work. I understand from reading some of the other topics that Comcast protects its bandwidth by not allowing routers to distribute to other computers, but can I change that?
I use 2 hard wire and 2 laptops around the house, can anyone help me configure the modem to distribute the signal?

I have an Arris TM402P cable modem that I rent from Comcast and it has a reset button on back which is accessed by pushing in with a pin or tack. This works to reset the modem without removing battery. Comcast said to disconnect modem from router or computer, hold for 10 seconds, allow to reset for 3 minutes or more, and then connect to router or directly to computer (Mac). This works fine for me and yes you can not switch from direct connection to router or back again without a hard reset such as above.
BTW, are you happy with performance of Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station with Comcast. I'm thinking of getting one since my DLink router seems to be on it's way out - 2+ years old. thanks

  • New Comcast Email Authentication Glitch under Ios 7

Having a consistent problem sending mail thru my main Comcast account since upgrading to Ios7.
The account sends and recieves fine on my computer under Osx10.8.5.
But my Iphone 5 and Pad under Ios 7.0.1 bothg sporadically show :
"The connection to the server has failed.  The mail server  imap.comcast.net is not responding.  Verify you have entered the correct account info. in the Mail settings."
When I try to send an outgoing message from my main account....it fails.
But when I try sending under a seconday email acount, it's authenticates and sends fine.
I update the IPhone to 7.0.2 and have the same issue.
As usual, I spent 20 minutes on hold to Comcast, got an agent, was put back on hold and ended up being disconnected.
This is NOT an uncounted email/read email issue or an acess issue getting new mail. It's a sporadic outgoing server authentication issue from what I've seen.
Any ideas other than being on hold for another 20 minutes with Comcast and getting disconnected again?
I've also repeatedly tried deleting/resetting the account and it hasn't worked..including multiple resending the accounts' password....which works on the computer fine.

Let's review what needs to be done.
First never assume Comcast support knows anything about Macs.
    Second:
On the Mac assuming you are using imap then launch Mail and look at account type, it should read imap not pop. If it reads pop then you are not using imap.
Your IN server name should be imap.comcast.net    Out smtp.comcast.net
    In port # 993    Out port # 465
Assuming your user name and password is correct then this works and works on all ios devices and syncs imap mail among them all.
Next if you tried to make the changes with Mail launched and you are editing the account prefs of what was there prior then thar will never work.
If so then you'd need to delete the account and start over. Either using internet accounts or Mail prefs account setup. To get to the screen which shows a choice among imap or pop you need to do the intial setup with a false password. Don't use a false email because that will eventually be shown under internet accounts when you complete the task properly.
The false password is important because it make the next setup screen "validating" fail and takes you to the next screen which read manual setup. Here and beyond is where you make your proper entries. Not all but almost all. Once completed launch Mail and check under user account>advanced for the out port # 465. It willn ot be there so sdo a custom and type in 465. The 993 will be there.
Assuming you have archives your old mail to icloud then those will be there also if you signed in to icloud with your Appleid and password.
The above procedure does not fail unless user makes a typo or forgets to change an entry.
    Review your task:
false password>imap.comcast.net>993>465 user mail account name and password  Lastly if you choose to do it thru Mail and not internet accounts make sure you SAVE your entries or they will not take.

  • My misadventures with Verizon FIOS

FIOS recently became available to my building, a 125 apartment condo.  A salesperson,{edited for privacy}and an accomplice, came to sign up new accounts and they had a field day.  The only competition is Comcast and residents were eager to be free of their evil clutches.  [management won't allow satellite, probably illegal.]  The lobby was crowded with potential customers and I asked Sheridan to call me cuz I didn't have time to wait.
He called from his car phone and signed me up on his drive home!  I told him my needs:  least expensive and no frills TV to be used with TiVO (requiring a cable card) and fast internet, 25mb.  He seemed unhappy that he couldn't sell me more but I knew what I wanted.  He said he'd sign me up for the Spanish package, La Complexion, or something like that, because it was the only no frills package.  I told him no hablo espanol, but that seemed to be no problem.  Installation would be the upcoming Saturday.
Okay, I could go on endlessly here, but the installation date was completely botched by Sheridan, not to mention he didn't return calls or emails.  ["I'm not just here to sell you the service, I'll always be here to help with any problems."  Yes, he said that!
The installer came out the following Saturday even though Sheridan told me there was no way the installation could be done until further notice because there were issues with the wiring.  It's a good thing I was home, well, maybe not.
Meanwhile, I never got any paperwork or an exact cost, only an estimate.  The installer did a good job and got the job done in 2 hours.  The first sign of a problem was when he asked which phone I wanted to hook up.  Huh?  I didn't ask for phone service.  The installer said he didn't have access to what plan I had, which didn't seem to be an issue.  Next sign of a problem was when I was able to get all the premium channels.  Sheridan seemingly signed me up for a tad more than I asked for.
I called Verizon to figure out what was going on.  Sales supervisor {edited for privacy} listened with seeming disbelief to my story, sympathized, empathized and apologized profusely, and said he would call back in 2 days.  Stupid me believed him.  I forgot I was dealing with Verizon.  He couldn't access my records right then and there since my account was too new and not on the system.  But he did determine I was signed up to the most expensive plan.  It's now 7:30pm and no call from Nick.  Meanwhile, I've had service 3 days and today, no TV.  Tech support couldn't figure out what the problem is and they have to send out a technician.
Can I just say shades of Verizon DSL, the worst customer service nightmare I ever had!  Fortunately, Comcast hasn't disconnected service yet and yes, I'm going back.  I would have thrown out the FIOS modem and router by now but I left my own router at work thinking I was done with it and was going to give it away.  Or maybe I'll keep the Verizon router, it's very nice and I deserve it.  There really is truly something wrong with this company.  I really wish an OTA antenna worked from my apartment, but I think, for now, it's back to the less evil Comcast.

to gsusser: "He called from his car phone and signed me up on his drive home!"
----I personally think cell phones are the worst invention.  That scenario that you described is unfortunate.  Personally, I would only sign up for services by calling the business number if I didn't have the time to wait for a rep in the lobby so then that way, everything can be documented instead of having miscommunication on someone's cell phone while that person is driving....just saying.  Driving while speaking on a cell phone is so dangerous.  I just don't think I would go along with signing up for services in that manner.  In a way, it's understandable how everything got messed up given the way this sales person handled it because without a computer system right there for him to document your order and to create a record, it leaves too much room open for a  "he said/she said" scenario and miscommunication about what you really want.  It sounds to me like he was looking to make more sales by any means necessary, probably due to a sales quota that he was trying to meet.
At this point, before switching back, you could follow through with having a technician to come look at the problem since you have made it this far.  It's only a suggestion and hopefully you could get a 4 hour time frame instead of an all day appointment for that.
I'm going to be sending a written complaint soon to Verizon's corporate office about some other issues I have had with their customer service.

  • Iphone accessories - the right case for me

Ideally I would want a case that can both store the headphones neatly, and that could be propped up for easy video viewing. It would be a cross between these:

Is there anything out there like this?

As per your requirement you can go for any N-Series or G-Series Router like WRT54GS,WRT54G2,WRT160N,WRT310N etc...
All the three model no you have mentioned is having QoS option to set the bandwidth priority for your devices.

  • WRT310N v2 disconnects with torrents / WoW patch

I was downloading a patch for WoW using their downloader and my linksys WRT310N v2 disconnected. I reset it and it worked for a few minutes then did it again. I then tried a linux distro torrent and got the same results. I grabbed the latest firmware, tried turning on and off upnp to no avail. I've read around the net this router has reboot/over heat issues. I've had the thing too long to bring back to best buy and its pissing me off. I got this one to replace a wrt54g that was doing the same godamn thing. Has anyone found a fix for this or do I have to RMA it? What do I do without a router while linksys takes 6 weeks or w/e?

I disabled the firewall and it seems to be working like a charm. Just downloaded ubuntu in a few minutes, I even increased the connections in utorrent. I bet all the power cycle problems could be resolved with this. If it crashes I'll post back to here.
Firewall is under security. I just hit disabled and save.

  • Strange disconnection problem for wrt160n

I'm using a speedtouch 536v6 modem in bridge mode with my wrt160n as the router. Everything works fine however whenever the first computer that establishes a wired or wireless connection in the network shuts down, all the other computers get disconnected. I have tried changing my default gateway ip from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1 but the same problem occurs. I have also tried power cycling but that didnt help either. I'm quite a newbie at this so hope that someone can give me some advise on what to do.

Upgraded firmware and changed the settings. Tried both channel 1 and 11 but still having the same problem. The weird thing is that I dont just get disconnected from the internet. I get disconnected from the router itself as I am unable to load the 192.168.1.1 router page. I only get back the connection in about 10 to 15mins or if i shut down all the computers in my network and turn only one computer on. Is there a problem with my router? Should I return it for a new one?

  • Can't Speak To Anyone at Comcast, Getting disconnected at every attempt

I have been trying to contact Customer Service with Comcast for over two hours to get billing adjustments for services that I am no longer using, because they consistently stop working and I am tired of it.  I have had to get another cable box 3 times in 3 months.  I am not doing that anymore.  It would be nice to have HD tv but I am tired of the aggravation.  What I find most troubling today is that when trying to reach Comcast Customer service, they disconnect the phone call every time I have tried to call.  At one point I was waiting over 30 minutes to speak to someone and then it just disconnected the call.  This was also happening to a friend of mine yesterday who was trying to order service at her home.  I even tried to press prompts for different departments hoping that I could get on the phone with someone to no avail. I just am so very disappointed in the Services and Customer Service with Comcast.  The last thing I wanted to do was look into another company.  But at this point I don't think that I have much choice.  It is such a shame.  I don't know, maybe if Comcast kept the call centers in the USA, then I might possibly be able to actually get through to someone.  I don't know.

I'm having the same issue. Every time I try to call in, I get routed to an automated system that wants me to either be a current customer or setting up a new account, there's no way to go to an operator to ask my billing question about a final bill. I disconnected in November and still waiting on a refund check. Serves me right for not waiting to see what the final bill was, and just paying the full amount.
I also waited for almost an hour for assistance via chat with no response, it didn't even show what the wait was going to be. I can't find a phone number to call directly with billing issues, and every number I've tried sends me to the same automated system that refuses to let me press 0 to speak directly with customer service and explain my problem. I even tried putting in my old account number, and its response was to disconnect me.
How do they know I wasn't a former customer wanting to get service at a new address? I'm happy to be done with Comcast, I just want the money they owe me.
Also, why does it have to be a check in the mail? I paid online, why can't they just refund as a direct deposit to the account I paid from?

  • Wireless Disconnection issue with WRT160N v3

    Hi Everyone,
I'm having trouble with my new WRT160N v3 router.
It's currently updated with firmware Ver.3.0.02 Build 3.
    My setup is as follows:
    Wired connection: 2-Desktop Computers & 1-Xbox 360.
    Wireless connection: 1-Laptop, 1-Xbox 360, 1-Platstation 3, 1-PSP & 1-Wii.
The issue is that EVERYTHING connected wirelessly disconnects after a short period of time in use, whether I'm doing work on my laptop or gaming (and all my consoles are connected wirelessly) - everything disconnects.
Another thing is that there always seems to be a loss in reception and the router is just in the other room (approx. 10 meters away).
I sat and I configured the router's wireless settings over and over again with all kinds of settings, but it just doesn't seem to help.
What is going on with this router? it's very problematic because a lot of people are complaing about the same issue.
I especially went out to buy a new router and ended up buying this sad router that really gets a person upset.
It's really frustrating being in the middle of a multiplayer game when you get disconnect because of a router that can't even keep it's wireless connectivity up, and this issue happens on every single piece of hardware I have that connects wirelessly.
Has anybody got any suggestions regarding this issue or some or other wat to solve it?
    Thanks for all the help!

Try to readjust the Wireless settings on the router...
Open the linksys setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.Reduce the MTU size to 1365 and click on save settings. Now,Click on Wireless tab and change the Channel Width to 20GHz only and Channel to 11.Click on subtab Advanced Wireless Settings...Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,RTS Threshold to 2307 >>Click on Save Settings.

  • Did you get DISCONNECTED or can't reach Comcast by phone?

There have been a many posts about customers not getting through, disconnected or hung up on when calling customer service....
If this has happened to you, please relate your experience so Comcast can address the problem.
You may want to try a different number if you can't get through. Any of these numbers will reach Comcast: 1-800-COMCAST, 1-888-266-2278, 1-800-XFINITY, 1-888-934-6489
    Other ways to contact Comcast:

Everything you say is true, and worse.  The hangups are the most irritating.  You spend HOURS trying to get Comcast to resolve an issue.  It's like you spend half your free time on dealing with a company that doesn't have their act together - they can't even get their own phone systems to work - no wonder my Digital Voice has had horrid breakups. and connection issues, Call Waiting, Voice mail issues.  And go to Corporate?  They treat you like trash.  After 12+ years of constant issues, I am now told that if they send a technician and find nothing wrong (which is what they have done for 12 years), I will be charged $70 for the visit.  Corporate marked my account so that no one can waive the charge, even when promised by a Comcast employee.  This is in contradiction to Comcast's own policy of honoring what an employee offers to you.  I so thoroughly disgusted with this company, I'm looking to other alternatives.  There only interest is MONEY -- that's why you see fee increases on a regular basis. Don't expect the Comcast employee 'plants' on this site to help you.  They do nothing, and I speak from experience.  They post here to try to soothe the angry people who reveal what treatment they receive, but they do nothing.  What a company; no wonder their own boards are full of thousands of complaints, and you can Google and find 10's of thousands of complaints, and they were awarded the worst company in the US by a highly-regard consumer magazine or agency (I forget which one) for at least 2 years.  Absolutely appalling.

  • WRT310n keeps disconnecting using PPoE

About 3 months ago I purchased a brand new Linksys wrt310n, set it all up and working find on DSL using PPoE. I upgraded the firmware to latest version more than a month ago, the router is being working fine all along. All of the sudden, one Sunday afternoon the router keeps on connecting to my ISP with the same PPoE settings I had there originally, then I get 2 type of issues, sometimes the router will come back and say it cannot get an IP Address, but most times it will try to authenticate using its PPoE settings, then it gets connected, stays connected for about 5 minutes and during those 5 minutes when I browse the web, the responses are very very very slow and pages don't display, eventually the connection disconnects and keeps retying, the PPoE settings keeps disconnecting. I called my ISP and their end works fine, when I connect a computer directly to the DSL modem and setup the same PPoE settings, the computer works fine and I can browse. Can someone please tell me what's going on with my router? Also if someone out there knows, what's the warranty on these devices? Remember this device is only 3 months old, I understand chances of breaking and all of that as technology is like that, but really how robust are these devices? Anyway back to my issue, can you help?

Make sure that the "Keep Alive" option is checked on the setup page of the router....Also,as you upgraded the router's firmware,I would suggest you to reset the router for 30-35 seconds, power cycle it and re-configure the router from scratch.

  • Disconnecting my services - Comcast keeps hanging up on me.

Hello! I have tried again and again to call 1-800-COMCAST, but after I indicate "No", I am not moving and after I enter the last 4 digits of my social security number as requested, Comcast disconnects me! There is apparently no way for me to get through. This has happened repeatedly. I can't help but assume that this is Comcast's attempt to "get rid of" at least some portion of their Customers that are trying to drop their service. Probably an automated sub-system running somewhere that says "randomly drop 2.7% of customers calling to cancel service", the same way they do for bill-padding. There appears to be no way to cancel service online (why make it easy for customers?).  So, can anyone help me figure out how to cancel service? I'd actually be open to a new, better deal for my service, but I don't want my service as-is (doubled in price).

When you can't reach them by phone try one of these:Send an email to the team at "[email protected]". Include:

        Full name
        Service address
Best contact phone number and best time to call
