Command to retrieve open fields VERY slow. To_Number ??

Hi Everyone,
I added a command to my report. It is running VERY slow. Is there something innefficient about this code such as converting the key string SY_KEY1 to a number?

to_number(SY_KEY1) AS MAP_LOC_NBR,
    SELECT SY_VALUE FROM SY_OPN_FLD_VALUE S2 WHERE S2.SY_OPEN_LBL = 'CT Type' AND S2.SY_KEY1 = S1.SY_KEY1

Getting rid of the inline queries helped the performance further. Still, with this block, I'm only retrieving 1500 records in 10 minutes... @28k, that's still a long time to run.
