Comparing table attribute with a string without compromising performance?

in pl/sql what is the best practice for comparing a varchar2 attribute with a string should be case insensetive, without compromising performance.
I've read on using an index (upper(tbl_attribute)) and then comparing in the where clause using
upper(tbl_attribute) = input_value'
is this the only way?
is there a directive that could make the process faster?
how about reading the table into memory then do the compare using upper in memory would that be faster than reading the table each time we run the comaprison condition?
example:
select name from tblnames
where upper(name) = upper('Joe')
thank you

I would say the ideal case would be to ensure that all the data that is stored in the column is upper case to begin with. To monitor that you could place a constraint on the table like the following:
ALTER TABLE TABLE_X ADD CONSTRAINT UPPER_CONS CHECK (COLUMN_X = UPPER(COLUMN_X));If the code can't be modified to always store the data in upper case you could always create a trigger to force the value to be upper case.
Then your WHERE clause would only have to be like the following:
COLUMN_X = UPPER('JOE')In my opinion storing the data as it should be would be the best performing because it should allow the CBO to have as many access paths as possible. You could then create a regular index on this column if there was truly a need for even better performance.
A function-based index as you suggested is another viable option as well.

  • How to filter by attributes with type Strings

    The documentation is not really detailed about setting attributes with type Strings. I assume I've to type each string value in a new line in the set attributes dialog box. This works fine and my XML looks like this<br /><br /><para CMS = "prodA prodB"><br /><br />having set the two string values "prodA" and "prodB".<br /><br />But how to filter these attributes? The filter CMS="prodA" shows my paragraph correctly, but CMS="prodB" does not show this paragraph as it should. Filters seem to match only the first of the set of string values.<br /><br />I would like to show this paragraph in two document versions for these two products prodA and prodB.<br /><br />Framemaker 8.0.3<br /><br />Tilman

    Tilman,
    this is something that AFAIK is not supported by FrameMaker's own attribute based filtering.
    But, without changing your documents, if you install the *free* ABCM (Attribute-based condition management) plug-in from weststreet consulting, you will succeed. Be sure to read the tutorial!

  • Comparing Collection object with a string

    Hi everyone,
    There is my problem: I have a program that generate all possible combinations of a certain number of letters for example: -ABC- will gives A, B, C, AB, AC, BC, ABC. Everything is fine at this point. But then the user can input a string like "AB" and I have to tell him if this string is contained in the generated set. My set is in a Collection, but when I used : LetterCombination.Contains(TextString), it returns always false. Even if I know that the string is contained in the set.
    Here is the code to generate the set:
    public class Recursion
         Collection LetterCombination;
    /*String Letters is the letters which I have to generate the combination, and
    the LetterNumber is the number of letters contained in my string.*/
         public Recursion(Set ItemLetters, String Letters, int LetterNumbers)
              ItemLetters = new TreeSet();
    String[] Token = Letters.split(" ");
    /*Adding the letters in the TreeSet*/
    for (int i = 0; i < LetterNumbers; i++)
         ItemLetters.add(Token);
    LetterCombination = BuildLetterSet(ItemLetters);
    private Collection BuildLetterSet(Set ItemLetters)
    Set NotUsedYet = new TreeSet();
    Set thisPowerSet = new TreeSet();
    Collection Letterresult = new ArrayList();
    NotUsedYet.addAll(ItemLetters);
    BuildByRecursion(NotUsedYet, thisPowerSet, Letterresult);
    return Letterresult;
    private void BuildByRecursion(Set notUsedYet, Set thisPowerSet, Collection result)
    if(notUsedYet.isEmpty())
    if(!thisPowerSet.isEmpty())
    Set copy = new TreeSet();
    copy.addAll(thisPowerSet);
    result.add(copy);
    return;
    Object item = notUsedYet.iterator().next();
    notUsedYet.remove(item);
    BuildByRecursion(notUsedYet, thisPowerSet, result);
    thisPowerSet.add(item);
    BuildByRecursion(notUsedYet, thisPowerSet, result);
    thisPowerSet.remove(item);
    notUsedYet.add(item);
    And if I print out the LetterCombination collection, it gives me:
    [C]
    [B, C]
    [A]
    [A, C]
    [A, B]
    [A, B, C]
    Which are the good combination needed. But I really don't understand how to compare this collection with the string entered by the user.
    I'm really lost. can somebody help me! Thanks in advance...

    You don't show where you call this constructor, or what your arguments are:
    public Recursion(Set ItemLetters, String Letters, int LetterNumbers)
       ItemLetters = new TreeSet();
       String[] Token = Letters.split(" ");
       /*Adding the letters in the TreeSet*/
       for (int i = 0; i < LetterNumbers; i++)
          ItemLetters.add(Token[ i ]);
       LetterCombination = BuildLetterSet(ItemLetters);
    }But, the constructor doesn't make sense, anyway. itemLetters is immediately set to a new TreeSet, so whatever you passed in (if anything) for the first argument is unchanged by the constructor (and the new TreeSet is lost when you finish the constructor). Also, you split your input Letters on space, but rely on LetterNumbers for the length of the split array (which may or may not be accurate). Why not do a 'for' loop testing for "i < Token.length", and eliminate LetterNumbers parameter? Your input for the second parameter to this constructor would have to be "A B C D" (some letters delimited by spaces). Your constructor only needs one parameter--that String.
    The capitalization of your variables doesn't follow standard coding conventions. Your code is hard to read without the "code" formatting tags (see "Formatting Tips"/ [ code ] button above message posting box).

  • Compare table data with data in csv file

    Hi, I have a database table with ~32 milj rows. I want to compare the data from a csv file(~ 1500000 rows) with the data in a specific database column. And as a result I want to see what rows exists in both the csv file and db and what records in csv file are unique. The text I'm searching for is VARCHAR2. I am not allowed to export the database table so that's not an alternative. This is also a production environment so one need to be careful not disturbing the production.

  • Comparing text box with empty string

    Here is the procedure how to do it - but it does not work for me.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2010/12/few-tips-on-%E2%80%98advanced-actions%E2%80%99.ht ml
    Could someone please confirm if the procedure mentioned in the blog is working or not, and if it's working, then what did I mess up in the first case below?
    In summary, I created a variable stringEmpty and created Advanced Action with condition associated with a button. I also created variable varUserName and associated it with a text box.
    There are 3 cases and 3 different behaviours.
    First case:
    stringEmpty =
    advanced action condition: varUserName; not equal to; stringEmpty (variable)
    After clicking the button, the result is as if the condition was always false (i.e. as if the string in the text box was always equal to stringEmpty)
    Second case:
    stringEmpty = aaa
    advanced action condition: varUserName; not equal to; stringEmpty (variable)
    After clicking the button, the condition is met when user enters "bbbbbbb" (which is OK). However, if he does not enter anything, only clicks the button, the condition is not met (which is incorrect behaviour, because "" <> "aaa" so the condition is met)
    Third case:
    advanced action condition: varUserName; not equal to; cccc (literal)
    In the third case all is OK.

    Hello,
    Each entry in a TEB has to be confirmed before it will get into the variable associated with it. This can be done with the Submit button or you can assign a shortcut key to it or use both. So I would really recommend to check if the variable is populated before you trigger your advanced action. You can do that by inserting temporarily a Text Caption that shows this user variable. Working with 2 TEB's on a slide: I tried to explain the workflow in another blog post:
    One submit button for multiple Text Entry Boxes
    To check if somewhere a scored object has been slipping in: check the Advanced Interaction view (F9)  which gives you an overview of all scored things.

  • How can I see changes in table with insertrow();postchanges()without commit

    Hi friends;
    I use jdeveloper 10.1.3.1 with jheadstart 10.1.3.1.
    I create two view object.In the first page I create table with one view object.
    In the second page I create table (with tableselectmany) with other view.
    I select many rows in second page and in the managed bean,
    I insert selectted rows atributes to first pages tables attributes.
    I use this code.
    public String commandbuttonaction(){
    CoreTable table = this.getTable1();
    Set rowSet = table.getSelectionState().getKeySet();
    Iterator rowSetIter = rowSet.iterator();
    BindingContainer bindings = getBindings();
    DCIteratorBinding pr_dcib = (DCIteratorBinding)
    bindings.get("DeptIterator");
    int i=206;
    while (rowSetIter.hasNext()){
    Key key = (Key) rowSetIter.next();
    pr_dcib.setCurrentRowWithKey(key.toStringFormat(true));
    RowImpl prRow = (RowImpl) pr_dcib.getCurrentRow();
    String AM="model.AppModule";
    String CF="AppModuleLocal";
    ApplicationModule empSvc = Configuration.createRootApplicationModule(AM, CF);
    ViewObject emps = empSvc.findViewObject("EmpsView1");
    Row newEmp = emps.createRow();
    newEmp.setAttribute("Manager",new Number(1));
    newEmp.setAttribute("Department",new Number(1));
    newEmp.setAttribute("Depno",new Number(3));
    emps.insertRow(newEmp);
    try {
    newEmp.validate();
    catch (Exception ex) {
    System.out.println("validate catch");
    try {
    empSvc.getTransaction().postChanges();
    catch (Exception ex) {
    System.out.println("post catch");
    Configuration.releaseRootApplicationModule(empSvc,true);
    i=i+1;
    In this code I only postchanges() in first view and dont want to commit.
    But I cant see changes row in the page .If I press save I see transaction completed succesfully message.
    But in database not insertted any rows.
    If I write commit() after postchanges() code I see rows in the table .But I dont want to commit.Only post
    my changes and if necessary I press save button in page.
    How can I see changes in the page without commit???Thanks for all....

    You should NEVER use statements like this in managed beans:
    ApplicationModule empSvc = Configuration.createRootApplicationModule(AM, CF);
    This will create a separate application module instance, not shared by the the web pages. That's why you do not see the changes.
    Instead, you can use the following code:
    ApplicationModule am = (ApplicationModule)JsfUtils.getExpressionValue("#{data.MyAppModuleDataControl.dataProvider}");
    where MyAppModuleDataControl shoud be replaced with the name of your am data control.

  • Comparing string delimited by semicolon in a column with another string

    Hi
    I have requirement like comparing a column which contains the string delimited by semi colon with a string delimited by semicolon. i.e. comparing the multiple values with multiple values.for this purpose i am using the following code
    select ams.application_id,it_mgmt_chain
    FROM tb_ams038_application ams,THE
    (SELECT CAST
    (Appmgmt_Str_To_Table
    (NVL (ams.it_mgmt_chain,
    ) AS appmgmt_tabletype_string
    FROM DUAL
    AND (COLUMN_VALUE IN ( SELECT COLUMN_VALUE
    FROM THE
    (SELECT CAST
    (Appmgmt_Str_To_Table
    (nvl(NVL (replace('1234;8383;83939;93939',',',';'),
    ams.it_mgmt_chain
    ) AS appmgmt_tabletype_string
    FROM DUAL
    here in the above it_mgmt_chain has the string containing numbers seperated by semi colon. and the Appmgmt_Str_To_Table function used to split the string and return it in the form of list. and appmgmt_tabletype_string is a varray which is created for spliting and storing purpose.
    Can anyone please suggest the best way to do this task as the above code is giving a performance issue.

    This example uses a "|" not a semicolon but it leverages the REGEXP_SUBSTR, SUBSTR, LENGTH to perform a parsing action.
    http://blog.mclaughlinsoftware.com/plsql-programming/a-result-cache-function-returning-a-collection/
    You may wish to remove the "THE" and replace it with "TABLE" too. Good luck.

  • MVC Problem with getter method of table attribute in model class

    Hi,
    I am on 620 SP34. I am writing a bsp application with mvc. One of the model classes has an attribute of type table. I use this attribute in a htmlb-tableview and '//MODEL/ZMY_TAB' for data binding. If I try to activate a getter method for this attribute, the application dumps with exception <i>BSP exception: Structure component with name "ZMY_TAB" does not exist</i>. I find the SAP source, that raising this exception (see below). The source code looks like: <i>"I don't support getter methods for tables in attribute path"</i>! The setter method works fine, so I am at a loss. Has anyone of you wrote a getter method for an table attribute in bsp-mvc? Have I to consider anything special?
    Thanks,
    Carsten

    You have two options:
    1. Make your attributes public. It should work fine.
    2. If you need to process the attribute values before it is used, you can make the attribute private but will need three methods
    GET_T_ZMY_TAB that returns the table
    SET_T_ZMY_TAB that sets the values
    GET_M_T_ZMY_TAB that returns DDIC information about the attribute. The same holds good for structures(Change to GET_S_ and GET_M_S_ ) and simple attributes(Change to GET_ and GET_M_).
    The set and get methods are kind of documented at http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/fb/fbb84c20df274aa52a0b0833769057/content.htm but there is no mention of the GET_M_ methods. I could not find one single document on the Model part MVC.
    Once I added the GET_M_XYZ methods to my attributes, my BSPs started to work fine.

  • Can Shuttles be based non-base  table ViewObjects with transient attributes

    Hello,
    Users have to select records from a data collection and a Shuttle looks most appropriate/nice for this purpose. We can introduce technical intersection tables in order to generate the Shuttles with JHeadstart 10g R3 if necessary, but there is no “functional” need to update any data in the database and therefore it would be practical if the ‘right’ side from a Shuttle can be based non-base table ViewObjects with transient attributes only. So, our interested is to know which records have been selected, i.e. moved to the right side from the Shuttle.
    Hope that my question is clear enough.
    Greetings,
    Michael

    Michael,
    This cannot be generated out-of-the-box.
    It is easiest to add the shuttle post-generation to your page, and then create a custom template to generate your custom shuttle into the page. I suggest you take a look at an example of a generated shuttle in a page, and the JHeadstart IntersectionShuttleBean class. You will see that the value property of <af:selectManyShuttle> points to the selectedKeys method in the JHeadstart Shuttle bean. In your case, you can create your own managed bean and bind the value property to your own method which will provide you access to the selected rows. The value property of the selectItem within the af:selectManyShuttle determines the property that is used to identify the selected row (which is the row key in case of Jhs-generated shuttles).

  • Applet window with no warning string without signing, they did it, but how?

    I've searched the forum and the web and nobody seems to be able to get an applet window with no warning string without signing the applet or changing the security policy file.
    But running my applets under the Java plugin 1.3.1_03, I've observed that sometimes I get exactly such windows for tool tips or popup menus, while other times I still get the kind with the warning string. And no I am not talking about those that lies entire within another Java window so that a lightweight implementation could be used.
    Seeing a warning attached to the bottom of your tool tips or popup menus is certainly annoying,
    clearly Sun has been able to nail that problem, just not 100 percent.
    But I've been unable to figure out how they did it, does anybody have an idea?

    The bar may be annoying, but it's pretty necessary for
    unsigned, unsecure appletsI understand that, however, Sun seems to be able to work around that (sometimes) for windows that host tool tips and popup menus, and I would like to find out how.

  • Crystal 2011 linking table with a String and a Number

    Hello,
    I am able to retrieve the data I want with the following  SQL Query in SQL: If I try to create it in Crystal 2011 APPLRUNN is a string and CNTBTCH is a number. Is there a way I can link these two fields if one is a string and the other is a number ?

    ENADV.APPLRUNN, ENPBD.CNTBTCH,
    ENPBD.DOCNBR
    FROM
    ENADV INNER JOIN
    ENPBD ON ENADV.APPLRUNN = ENPBD.CNTBTCH
    Thanks,

    Hi Debbie,
    You cannot linking  table with a string and a number. I have given a example query:
    SELECT
    ENADV.APPLRUNN, ENPBD.CNTBTCH,
    ENPBD.DOCNBR
    FROM
    ENADV INNER JOIN
    ENPBD ON
    ENADV.APPLRUNN = ENPBD.APPLRUNN  or ENADV.CNTBTCH = ENPBD.CNTBTCH
    I modify last sentense because one table primary key is equal to another table Foreign key i.e
    one table ID field = another table ID field or one table NAME field = another table Name field.
    Please understand my intenction and check linking fields in tables.

  • Building a table with a string data type

    I am using the Build Table function and I would like to be able to label my columns on the first iteration with a string data type, which doesn't seem to be an acceptable signal for the Build Table function. However, the express table is located under "text indicators" on the front panel, so it seems like there should be a way to do this..

    Ah, the "Build Table" Express VI. I hate Express VIs.
    That Express VI is nothing more than a really complicated way of creating a 2D array of strings. The Express VI has no inputs for the row and column headers, so you need to add them in yourself. The same would be true for a regular table control/indicator. Here's what you need to do:
    Right-click on the table indicator and select Visible Items -> Column Headers.
    Right-click on the table indicator and select Create -> Property Node -> Column Header Strings[]. LabVIEW will attach a property node to the cursor and switch to the block diagram. Plop down the property node on the block diagram.
    Right-click on the property node on the block diagram and select "Change All to Write".
    Right-click on the property node and select "Create -> Constant". This will give you an array of strings, and you can enter the column headers in each array element.
    Wire the array to the property node.
    Connect the property node to the Build Table Express VI using the error clusters.
