Competing for a resource

I don't know if this is the correct forum for my question.
I'm developing an application using servlets+jsp following a MVC architecture.
In particular, my application has to assign an appointment with a doctor. But there are many users (patients) compiting for this resource. I thought of blocking this resource until I collect all the patient information, but I'm not quite sure that this is the best option.
Is there any paper or site where I can read something about allocating a resource and resolving conflicts in general? And in particular for a web application?
Thanks

I have visions of a token ring...
Okay so all A,B,C etc can talk to each other. So what to do is that the only the downloading one holds the "token".
When you start up these nodes will find each other and create an ordered list that is the same on all of them. The list should be online order. So if A comes on first, followed by C and then B then the list is A,C,B.
A downloads for an interval (this should be an amount of time) that you decide arbitrarily. This amount could be adjusted later to compensate for greater numbers of n.
After the interval is complete A asks C (next in list) if it wants to download. If yes then it hands the token off to C. If no then it asks B. etc. If it gets back to it's point in the list then it downloads again.
If any node does not respond to requests (does it want to download now) then it is dropped from the list (a message broadcast to all nodes).
This is simple but relatively fair.

  • N threads competing for a resource

I have a problem where i have N threads competing for a resource.
There cannot be a controller that oversees the threads (so in fact you can think of them as distributed systems).
Each thread has the knowledge of the others, and can communicate with them.
Can you guys think of a scheduling algorithm that is fair, for this problem.
I was thinking of dining philosophers, but that is slightly not the same. Also, ideally, we want to be able to work around the problem where a thread may die, and this should not affect the algorithm

  • Calculations competing for resources when they run in parallel

I have an allocation process where I run 5 different calcs in 5 different
cubes (With exactly same structure and settings) to speed up my process.
-None of them are using CALCPARELLEL
    -We have 6 CPU's with 4 cores each.(Total 24 processors)
    -Enough RAM for 5 cubes
    - AIX 64 bit OS
Even though I have adequate resources to run the calcs in parallel, For some
reason calcs are waiting for other to complete. 5 calcs are starting at same
time, which are almost should take same time based on what they are
calculating, but they seem like waiting for some resources to free up. Run
times for these calcs are very random, for Ex: If calc1 takes 1 hour calc5
takes 20 mins in first test, Calc 1 takes 20 mins and Calc 5 takes 1 hour in
    the next test.
Did anybody see this scenario before? Any idea on what resource the calcs
are competing for? Please shed some light on it.
    Thanks,
    SR.

OK Let me first confirm some things from your previous emails.  When you say ASO Calcs you do mean "custom calcs" (why not post your maxl scripts) ?  Hopefully you are not referring to aggregations as calcs.
You say you are doing calcs on multiple cubes concurrently - please post the script
You say you are loading from BSO calcing and then using a report to extract from ASO.  Are you doing and aggregation after the data load?  Remember that when aggregations run the whole cube is "frozen" and the agg is given exclusive use of the cube.  I suspect that you should have no aggregations defined for these cubes.
Finally, you say you are doing multiple loads/calcs/extracts in each of your 5 cubes.  How - post the scripts please.  You have read the section of the dbag below regarding load buffers and custom calcs right?
Understanding Data Load Buffers for Custom Calculations and Allocations
When performing allocations or custom calculations on an aggregate storage database, Essbase uses temporary data load buffers. If there are insufficient resources in the aggregate storage cache to create the data load buffers, Essbase waits until resources are available.
Multiple data load buffers can exist on a single aggregate storage database. The data load buffers that Essbase creates for allocations and custom calculations are not configurable. You can, however, configure the data load buffers that you create for data loads and postings.
If you want to perform allocations and custom calculations concurrently with data loads and postings, set the resource usage for the data load buffers that you create for data loads and postings to a maximum of 0.8 (80%). The lower you set the resource usage setting, the greater the number of allocations and custom calculations that can run concurrently with data loads and postings. You can also configure the amount of time Essbase waits for resources to become available in order to process load buffer operations.
To configure data load buffers, use the alter database MaxL statement with the initialize load_buffer grammar and ASOLOADBUFFERWAIT configuration setting.
I question whether this section of the documentation is correct.  I would think that a calculation would need exclusive access to the cube otherwise it would be calculating against a moving target.   I will try to reach out to someone at Oracle to ask the question.

    Hi,
I think you should post this in an other forum, somewher in the Fusion stack, maybe Identy Management. This forums is ment for the Oracle database. So please post in a forum underneath https://forums.oracle.com/forums/category.jspa?categoryID=13&start=0

  • Problems rebooting: "couldn't lock for reboot: Resource busy"

    Hi there,
I'm having trouble rebooting my Xserve G4. The server has been up for 128 days, and a previous admin had installed some software updates, and I recently applied several new ones including 'Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 5', QuickTime 7.6.6 and Safari 4.0.5.
It appears it's been trying to reboot ever since the first set of updates, but is not able to. What is strange is that even after having applied the updates mentioned, Server Admin still lists these same software updates as new, uninstalled updates, and asks me to install them.
Also, the CPU usage is running at around 60%, and diskarbitrationd and kextcache seem to be the main CPU hogs.
I have tried asking the machine to reboot through Server Monitor, and it fails, stating:

  • "not a valid location for linked resource" in Flash Builder 4.7

    Hi,
I'm constantly running into the problem, that Flash Builder simply won't let one create a linked resource that points to a location on the same drive?
    I'm getting the infamous
"...not a valid location for linked resource..."
    error message.
I'm using FB 4.7 with Flash Professional CC.
Is that supposed to work at all?
I've 1 workspace where I've successfully created a linked resouce - but it fails for all others. Even when I'm setting up a new WS.
And it's totally unclear to me why it had worked there but not in all others that I'm trying to create.
    André

A year later, but I'm facing the same bug.
If your ever found a solution I'd be glad to hear.
I filed a bug with more details and my own workaround:

  • Is there any way to create admin role only for one resource.

    Hi all,
I am trying to create an admin role with 'update user' capability. But I want to restrict the user(with the admin role) to be able to update a user's attribute only for one resource, The user(with the admin role) should not be able to update the attributes of the other resources which a user have.
Is there any way to create admin role only for one resource?
I customized the tabbed user form to show only one resource attribute (deleting the missing fields and adding my tab for the resource) and then assigned this new User Form to the user(with the admin role) in security tab.
It works fine. But the problem is that if any user(with the admin role) is also admin of some other resource then he/she will not be able to view the other resource attributes.
    Please suggest,
    thanks

The loop function always repeats the same region so of course the fade is also copied. So option+drag the original region to make a (non clone) copy, fade the first region and loop the second one (which you just copied).

the bean is initializes after this error. but it seems to be not working.

To develop Message Driven Beans, select EJB in the Component Palette, and select Message Driven Bean in Component Palette list. A UML diagram, and a Message Driven Bean node gets added. Select the Message Driven Bean node. A EJB Module Editor gets displayed. Select Enterprise JavaBeans>Message Driven Bean in the EJB Module Editor and configure a Message Driven Bean.

  • User self request for a RESOURCE

    Hi Experts,
I am facing the problem to self request the user for AD resource and getting the below error
Exception java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.String was thrown in adapter "ADCS Create User". The Adapter Response was "java.lang.String" .Setting task status... "java.lang.String" does not correspond to a known Response Code. Using "UNKNOWN".
But in the admin console when user request for the AD resource through AccessPolicy/Resource Profile user can able to provisioning into the AD resource.
    Thanks and regards,
    Santosh

    Hi
    1) In process form i checked the auto populate and autosave option in this scenario administrator can easily provisioned into the AD resource and in the object form m populating organization filed. If i wont do this then i have to edit the the process form and save it, then only user can provisioned in to AD.
    2) If i am not populate the fields then i am not getting the error which was sent in earlier post but showing pending status(without approval) and user not provisioned in AD.
    3) In self request you don't populate the field, it stays null which results in the class cast exception in the provisioning code. as u said , in this case if i want to provision the user through Adminconsole and as well as user self request for Provisioning in AD Resource case a) From adminconsole user provisioned
    b) User self request not working and showing status as pending.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Santosh

  • No unit found for selected resource ( error message /SAPAPO/SDP318 )

    Hello
I am loading resource using standard SNP Planning book. When I try to load the resource, I am getting this error message "No unit found for selected resource". Can someone tell me where in the resource I set the UOM that corresponds to Planning book UOM.
    Thanks for the hlep.
    Najam

    Hi,
Please check the type of the resource. This should be a single Mixed or Multi Mixed resource to maintain the SNP capacity.
And also run cons check / live cache check
    Thanks,

  • Issue in Adding Custom Status Defnition for a resource object

    Hi,
We have installed OIM and patch it to 9.102. We have created one custom resource object (flat file connector) for reconciliation. As part of requirement we need to define three status for this resource object - Enabled, Suspended and Disabled. As Enabled and Disabled status are available OOTB, i have added 'Suspended' status under the Status Definition in resource object. Now the issue is that if we are passing reconcile user status to either Enabled or Disabled, the status is changing fine on Linked user resource object. But if the status passed as 'Suspended' the resource account status of linked user (OIM) is not changed.
We have mapped the resource side Status attribute to OIM_OBJECT_STATUS under process definition. I also made the entry 'Suspended' in 'Lookup.Object Object Status' lookup to see if any help, but no luck.
The 'Suspended' status is successfully added in OST table against the object key and on manually updating the status key against the resource object it is reflecting 'Suspended' status through admin console. User-->Resource Profile
Does anyone have any clue if the requirement is correct (adding a custom object status) and so, where i am going wrong. Thanks in advance.

A quick doubt..If i have written down a process task and calling this on completion of 'Reconciliation Update Received' and in this process task , a adapter is attached which is updating the resource account status (ost_status) on the basis of some custom attributes. This task is working fine and updating the status. But the issue is that once this task is complete, the mapping in Process definition (loginDisabled <MetaDirectory> --> OIM_OBJECT_STATUS) overrides the status.
Per my understanding the flow is going like this-->
    1. Reconciliation run
    2. Event Linked
    3. Reconciliation Update Received
    4. Call The custom Task --> Update the OST Status
    5. Update the OST Status per the mapping OIM_OBJECT_STATUS.
Is there any way we can implement that the status update in (5) occurs before (4) so that my custom task status can override the (5) as per my business requirement.

  • MacBook and MacBook Pro competing for airwaves

    Howdy,
I have an Airport Extreme set up as wireless router, i.e., the cable modem is plugged into the Extreme. Elsewhere in the house, an Airport Express is set up to extend the network. We have both a MacBook and a MacBook Pro, both running Leopard. When both laptops are accessing the web, it seems as though they were competing for the connection because the MacBook systematically gets slower connections, lags, and sometimes gets disconnected entirely.
Following some advice I found elsewhere in these forums, I downgraded the firmware of the Airport Extreme to 7.3.1. Here are its main settings:
    - participate in a WDS network
    - radio mode: 802.11n (b/g compatible)
    - channel 11
    - security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    - DHCP server distributes addresses between 10.0.1.2 and 10.0.1.200
Both the Extreme and the Express use the same channel. I tried changing it with no success.
Upgrading the firmware does not resolve the issue. The MacBook Pro is never disconnected; it always comes ahead of the MacBook. The two laptops are not dealt the same IP address, but somehow, there is a competition. When the MacBook Pro is turned off, say, and not accessing the web or anything else, the MacBook does not get disconnected.
Has anyone seen such a situation before? I might have misconfigured something.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
    Dom

In a WDS setup, everyone uses the same channel (in your case 11).
If you can run an ethernet cable from the Airport Extreme to the Airport Express you can eliminate the WDS mode and instead configure your 2 base stations for WiFi Roaming, and you can put the Airport Express on a different channel (eg. Ch1).
The Airport Express gets its connection to the router via ethernet. The Express is configured into "Bridge Mode". The Express is given the exact same SSID as the Extreme. The Express is given the exact same password as the Extreme. The Express is set to a different channel (Channel 1 would be a good choice, unless your neighbors are using that, in which case you want to be at least 5 channels away from your Extreme and any neighboring base stations with strong signals).
This will give you a Roaming setup where as your move around the house, your MacBook and MacBook Pro will automatically switch between the strongest base station, but because everyone is using the same SSID and Password, you do not loose your connections.
And each base station is using its own channel.
If you do have neighbors with strong signals, you can use something like "AP Grapher", iStumbler, KisMac, MacStumbler, etc... to see your neighbors, the chanels they are using, and the relative WiFi signal strength so you can choose the channels with the least interference.
If you can not run an ethernet cable between the Extreme and the Express, but you really like the idea of a Roaming network, then you could look into PowerLine ethernet adaptors for getting an ethernet equivalent between the 2 base stations.

  • In P6 8.4 web client for loading Resource page takes long time

As per tested configuration of P6 EPPM 8.4 we are using IE 9 and JRE 1.7.0.67.
I had checked RAM and its utilization is Max 40%, CPU usage is also very less.
Enough disk space is also avaliable (70% avaliable).
Enteries in resources are also very few just 20 numbers.
Project page is loading normally. But for loading resource page it pause for almost 15-20 seconds.
Last week i had faced issue that application freezes while loading resource page so i had restarted application and it was working.
May i know, what will be reason to take long time to load resorce page and possible solution.

I am attching java console tracer log for while loading resource page..
    please check.

  • Project Server 2010 Resource Assigments - Need a license for every Resource?

I am trying to determine the requirements for Project Server 2010 licenses.
In Project Server 2010, I need to add resources to the pool, then assign a resource to a project task.  The task will be maintained/statused through a manager, not the resource.
Does that resource need to have a Project Server license even if the resource never accesses Project Server even through PWA?

    Hi JenKranich,
You need licences only for users that will access
Project Server data by any means :
MS Project Pro, Sharepoint sites and/or
    PWA.
But resources not associated with users are not "real person" accessing data but just informal entity, thus no need for licences for those resources.
It is important to note that if those resources can access the SharePoint site, since it contains Project Server data (risks, issues, deliverables), then they DO need a licence.
    Hope this helps.
