Compiling Apache2 on Tiger (not server)

Hi all,
I've been developing Unix apps for over 17 years. My primary platform was Linux and that's now secondary. My PowerMac Dual running Tiger (not server) is my primary. I disabled the stock Apache 1.3, then downloaded the latest Apache2 code (2.2) compiled it and installed in /usr/local/apache2.
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache2 --enable-shared=max --without-berkeley-db --with-mpm=worker --enable-ssl=shared --enable-info=shared --enable-headers=shared --enable-expires=shared --enable-dav=shared --enable-dav-fs=shared --enable-dav-lock=shared --enable-ident=shared --enable-so --enable-deflate=shared
The httpd runs fine, but when I go ahead and enable one of the shared library modules, like mod_ident, it complains with:
httpd: Syntax error on line 54 of /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load /usr/local/apache2/modules/mod_deflate.so into server: cannot create object file image or add library

When I ran make install with sudo privileges, I received the following error:
/src/httpd-2.2.2/srclib/apr/libtool --silent --mode=install cp mod_ident.la /usr/local/apache2/modules/
Warning! dlname not found in /usr/local/apache2/modules/mod_ident.la.
Assuming installing a .so rather than a libtool archive.
However, when I looked in /usr/local/apache2/modules, there was no shared library called mod_ident.so.
What's really weird, when I compiled and installed PHP, that make procedure did in fact install libphp5.so.
I believe there may be something wrong in my compilation commands or tools with Apache2. I have Fink installed in /sw and its appropriate directories are in my PATH.
Any assistance on how to convert .la files into .so files so as to get a successfully running Apache2 on my Mac.
I need to use the latest code base from Apache2 to develop a new project dependent upon this version.

I am running Apache 2.2.2 on my 10.4.6 machine just fine and I have the *.so files you are lacking... My guess is that your configure command is not right - FWIW, this is what I am using:
./configure \

Especially the first couple of lines as well as the --disable-static probably make a big difference...
