Forced *^$$#% Line Returns!

I have suffered this problem for too long now. It is in just
about everything I do, web design, blog editors what have you.
I would guess 90% of the time I do not want a line return
after I type a word or phrase.
Back in my FRONTPAGE days I got around that by using ADDRESS
and then removing the italics.
In the project I am working on I cant use CSS because I am
exporting it to something else.
Its a side bar with perhaps 40 graphics and 100 different
lines of words or phrases. I want to put in some HTML code at the
top and bottom to make ALL LINE RETURNS to away. FOREVER AND EVER!
So what am I missing here?
Is this going to be something really simple that is going to
embarrass me?. :)

Not sure about the nasty webforum tags there, but this would
be a standard
paragraph of text.
poopyhead<br>
This is an isolated line of text - invalid if not within some
other
container, like <p>, <h#>,
<div>,<td>, etc. - followed by a line break,
following HTML4x tag syntax. This line would be invalid on a
page with an
XHTML doctype.

Ditto above, except following XHTML tag syntax. This line
would be invalid
on a page with an HTML doctype.

I suppose we'd have to know about your blog editor.

  • Forced Line Break and Paragraph Return

    Hi.. It´s maybe a simple question but I cannot see diferences.
    What´s the difference between Forced Line Break and Paragraph Return ?
    Thank's for the answer

    A force line break is still the same paragraph. You won't see a difference unless there is some text change with each new paragraph, such as a style change or the addition of space before or after a paragraph. The forced line break can also be used as a trigger in a nested style to make the first line or lines formatting for a paragraph different from the following lines.

  • Deleting extra forced line breaks with Find/Change

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
    I'm importing word .doc that are text-heavy and the formatting is such that there are lots of extra forced line breaks creating a blank line between paragraphs.
    To avoid manually deleting the extra forced line breaks to eliminate the blank line of space between paragraphs, what are the best steps to doing this an easier way?
    Any advice on clear steps to do it using the find/change option?
    Thanks in advance as always..
    JRH

    Are you talking about two hard returns [Enter] in a row, or a soft and hard return [Shift + Enter] and [Enter]? A forced line break is a soft return, but most Word users would just hit the return key for an empty paragraph to get an empty line.
    In either case, you can do a simple text find change, if GREP intimidates you. Use the special characters menu to enter either two "end of paragraph" or a "forced line break" and "end of paragraph" markers into the find field and a single "end of paragraph" marker into the change field.
    This is included as part of the "Find/change by list" sample script which adds some other common cleanup functions like converting two spaces to one. The advantage to using GREP is it will find any number of consecutive paragraph end markers and convert to one in a single pass, while a text search must be run multiple times to catch the heavy handed author.

  • JTextPane and RTF line returns

    I'm wondering is there anyway to use a line return with JTextPane's? I'm not sure if thats what they're called but what i'm talking about is the RTF equivelent of <BR>. I tried importing a file with line returns and none of they were treated as a space. I also tried typing shift-enter like in word, but that didn't do anything. Is it possible to use line returns with a jtextpane? or is that just something you have to do without?

    Okay here's my code:
         coursetext = new JTextPane();
         coursetext.setContentType("text/RTF");
         RTFEditorKit edkit = new RTFEditorKit();
         coursetext.setEditorKit(edkit);
    and later on:
         RTFEditorKit edkit = new RTFEditorKit();
         File file = new File("gn.rtf");
         try {
              FileInputStream fr = new FileInputStream(file);
              DefaultStyledDocument doc = new DefaultStyledDocument();
              edkit.read(fr,doc, 0);
              coursetext.setStyledDocument(doc);
    The file i'm loading is saved as an RTF file from Wordpad. If i try to load a rtf file saved from MS Word (2003) it gives me a null pointer exception.

  • Modify amount of space after line return

    hi
    I'm creating a html email (using a table and a new inline style each time i insert text, as advised)
    However, this query may apply to any form of html produced in dreamweaver:
    Can I set and modify the amount of space inserted after a line return?
    I know shift+return gives standard space but I'd like to ideally insert a slightly bigger space than this (although not as big a full "return" gives)
    Surely this must be possible?
    All help appreciated
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
    Hitting the enter key gives you a paragraph tag <p>  </p>
    Paragraphs have a default margin so you need to change that margin.To change/adjust the margin on all paragraphs on your page use css.
    Add it to the head of the page between style tags or to an external stylesheet:
    p {margin: 5px 0 0;}
    The above sets margin 5 pixels top 0 pixels right/left 0 pixels bottom. Adjust as per your need.
    Thanks

  • Forced line

    I am storing the contents of a large input textfield into a
    mysql database. Problem is, when you force a line in the textfield,
    and save it it works. However the next time you save it, it adds
    another forced line. You save again and it will create another
    forced line. Is there comething I can do to prevent this?... eg...
    if when they save the text field... If I see a forced line, I can
    replace it with the flash term for a forced line, and save that in
    the database without the forced line but with the flash syntax for
    a forced line. Then when it comes to displaying the flash again it
    will read the flash syntax and display a forced line... get it????
    thanks to any responders. J

    yes, that can occur in text files and xml files that are
    loaded.
    i always use a stripWhiteSpace function when loading those
    file types:

  • Clear or Override Forced Line Breaks?

    This is probably really simple, but I searched the help file and didn't find it.
    - How do you clear all forced line breaks in a paragraph?
    I'm editing text that we thought was fairly final, and I usually work in Preview mode as it's cleaner and easier to see what's going on. But I'm fearful of any forced line breaks that I may not know about that could mess up the paragraph flow after I make changes. The text is fully justified.
    I know I can work in Normal mode and turn on 'View Hidden Characters' to see them. But even with that, they can sometimes be small and hard to see depending on the complexity of the type and how zoomed-in I am.
    - Isn't there a simple key command to override forced line breaks?
    THANKS!

    OK. Thanks. I knew that would be an option, I just think I confused a couple other features with what I was hoping to do.
    I may have been confusing 'Clear Local Overrides' when updating a paragraph style, and the ability to have certain things highlighted (custom tracking/kerning, glyphs, etc.), with an ability to clear forced line breaks with a simple key-command or palette menu item.
    Thanks, though.

  • How to interpret Line Returns in a text box

    Hello,
    I have a text file that contains several sentences that are tab delimited:
    For Example:
    The cat sat on the mat.   The dog sat on the cat.   [Where the two sentences are delimited]
    My first objective is to read these two statements into two separate text boxes… and I can do this.
    My second objective is to add a line return to each statement so that when in their respective text boxes they will appear as:
    The cat sat                    The dog sat
    on the mat.                    on the cat.
    I don’t know how to do this.  Any ideas…?  Ideally I want to insert something like “/n” into the sentence so that LabVIEW can interpret it as a new/return line command when it outputs it to the text box.
    Kind regards,

    Here's one possible solution (note the string format display settings, LV 2010).
    I use an array for the output for simplicity. You can index individual elements if really needed.
    First we create an array of sentences (tab is delimiter).
    Then, for each sentence, we create an array of words (space delimiter)
    We reshape the array of words to two rows (pad if the number of words is odd).
    We form the two line sentence using array to spreadsheet string with space as delimiter.
    LabVIEW Champion . Do more with less code and in less time .

  • HELP! GREP Line Return Removal

    Hi All,
    I’m importing a bunch of text files and making a script. I am still novice in the world of GREP. I need a GREP code to find this: (1 space, a line return, another 4 spaces, then a character). The character is important so it doesn’t run my real line returns together.  I'm going to replace it with a space to eliminate all these horrible line returns.
    THANK YOU!

    Looking at the new screen grab, it appears that there are 10 spaces at the beginning of the lines, but no spaces at all before the hard returns (not to mention the even larger strings of spaces at the start of the headings. Are you purposely leaving some spaces to provide the iindents? That's a bad way to work.Indents should all be set as part of the paragraph style.
    I'd be inclined to to several steps here, starting with trying to isolate the paragraphs that are headings and apply a style. Based on the very small example, I think you could use a search for  ^\s{10}\s+  (the ^ says the spaces are at the beginning of the paragraph and the rest says "more than ten" since there seems to be variability). In the change formatting assign a unique parargraph style.
    Do the same thing, but this time search only for ^\s{10} and apply a different unique style.
    Now you can fix the spaces and remove the returns. The first search will clear the spaces in front of the headings: Search for ^\s+ and set the find format to the heading style you assigned. Clear the change format, and leave the change to field blank. This will emove all the leading spaces from the heading paragraphs. It's important to do this before the next step.
    Now search for \r\s+ and set the find format to the second style you assigned above for paragraphs starting with 10 spaces. Put the cursor in the change to field and press spacebar once to add a space. This will replace all the mid-paragraph returns and extra spaces with a single space, but the first line will still have leading spaces. Search again for ^\s+ with the find format still set to the same style and clear the change to field to remove the last leading spaces for the paragraphs.
    Jongware, did I get that right?

  • Fix the forced line break bug already!

    Illustrator has had the same bug since version 11. In 5 consecutive versions!
    Forced line break in a justified text behave like a paragraph ending (Enter) aligning the line before the forced line break left. It looks like a new paragraph but it is just incorrectly aligned line in the middle of a paragraph.
    Also Find & Replace recognizes only forced line break but (^n) not paragraph ending (^p) although both can be used in text.
    Since discretionary hyphens do not have an effect whatsoever it requires a lot of manual editing to make typographically acceptable text block to the back of a book jacket.
    So, Adobe. How hard is exactly fix this very annoying bug which has been reported dozens of times? It has even been demonstrated to your tech people who agreed that it really is a bug and should be fixed.

    A force line break is still the same paragraph. You won't see a difference unless there is some text change with each new paragraph, such as a style change or the addition of space before or after a paragraph. The forced line break can also be used as a trigger in a nested style to make the first line or lines formatting for a paragraph different from the following lines.

    My assignment statement is exactly the same format as what you posted on

    indicated it should be.
    :P1_MESSAGE_1 is a display only, saves state item. After the assignment
